The Division held the monthly meeting at
the Crow’s Nest. The guest speaker was Mr.
Jeff Loder, NL Government, Lead
Negotiator of CETA, Director of Trade
Policy. He also brought with him Mr. Mark
Janes, Deputy Lead Trade Negotiator,
Manager of Trade Negotiations and Mr.
Adam Victors, Deputy Lead Negotiator,
Trade Policy Analyst. It was a very
informative presentation. The members had
several questions and Mr. Loder was able to
give acceptable answers to them. One of the
main point was that CETA is similar to
NAFTA and there will not be any negative
consequences for this province. Mr. Loder’s
presentation will be uploaded to our website
as soon as we get that from him.

A great Newfoundland and Labradorean,
Mr. Mel Woodward passed away at age 81.
Mr. Woodward passed away early this
morning at his home.

The following appeared in The Telegram,
St. John’s NL
“Woodward, born on Aug. 23 1933, moved
to Happy Valley-Goose Bay in 1957 from
Boat Harbour. He went on to create
Woodward Group of Companies, becoming
one of the most successful businessmen in
the history of Labrador.
Following is the statement from the
Woodward family:
It is with tremendous sadness that we
announce the death of Melvin Woodward,
who passed peacefully away this morning at
his home in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. He

leaves to mourn his wife and lifetime partner
Sibyl; his children: Peter (Nicole Powell),
Tana (Mike Whitehead), Melvin Jr.; and five
grandchildren: Erin, Gillian, Mac, Luke and
Andrew.
Dad was born in North Boat Harbour,
Newfoundland and moved to Goose Bay,
Labrador in 1957 to work. Followed by his
bride-to-be, Sybyl Coles, they married at the
RCAF Chapel in Goose Bay on
Remembrance Day of that year.
He was proud of his business
accomplishments. He began working for
himself in the 1960s, and 55 years later has
built the Woodward Group of Companies
with sales of $750 million and over 800
employees, a testament of his outstanding
contributions to business growth and the
economy of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The companies he has created include
Woodward’s Oil Limited, Woodward’s
Limited, Coastal Shipping Limited,
Woodward Motors Limited, Labrador
Motors Limited, Labrador Marine Services
and Arctic Fuel Delivery. He was
particularly proud of his ability to
reestablish Newfoundland and Labrador’s
role in the Arctic, and he won all contracts
through competitive tendering with the
Nunavut Government to provide fuel
distribution in the territory.
In addition to business, our father had a
distinguished career in public and
community service in our province. Twice
elected as a member of the House of
Assembly, he served as minister of Labrador
Affairs; director for the Bank of Canada;
founding member and president of the
Labrador North Chamber of Commerce;
president of the Liberal Association;
chairman of the Federal Enterprise
Development Board for Industry, Trade and
Commerce; member of the Memorial
University board of regents; and chairman
of the St. John’s Port Corporation. Other
significant honours included an Honorary
Doctor of Laws degree from Memorial
University, the Ernst Young Entrepreneur of
the Year Award, and being named to the
Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall
of Fame.
Our father never forgot his roots. He loved
Boat Harbour and continued to share his
love for his hometown and for Labrador.
Like few others of his generation he saw the
north as a land of opportunity, and while
others went south to settle and invest, he
made the north his home. A man of integrity
and hard work, he was loyal to those around
him.
Today we celebrate our father’s
accomplishments and mourn the loss of a
husband, father, grandfather and a true son
of Newfoundland and Labrador.
His wake will take place at Fillatre’s
Funeral Home in Happy Valley-Goose Bay
and funeral service will be held at St.
Andrew’s Anglican Church in Happy
Valley-Goose Bay, with interment in Boat
Harbour.”
Woodward Group is a tremendous supporter
of the CMMC NL Division’s Nautical Skills
Competition (NSC). We are very thankful
and grateful for their continued support for
this great and highly educational
competition.

Marine Atlantic ferry delays hoped to
ease as winds break up ice.
Some of ice floes in Cabot Strait 10
kilometres long, says acting
superintendent of ice operations.

Rebecca Acton-Bond says ice conditions are
worse than last year and last year's ice
conditions were the worst in 30 years
(CBC).
There could be some relief this week for
people enduring slow ferry crossings
between North Sydney, N.S., and
Newfoundland.
Marine Atlantic says its crossings are taking
two to three hours longer because of the
heavy ice in the Cabot Strait.
Rebecca Acton-Bond, acting superintendent
of ice operations in the region, says
southeasterly winds on Wednesday,
followed by westerlies, should help to flush
away some of the ice.
"It's going to continue to flush out of the
Cabot [Strait]. Now with the westerly
component, it may drift over towards Port
aux Basques more, but yes it's going to
continue to flush out of the Cabot. So once
that ice moves out of the Gulf through the
Cabot, then it's not going to be so much of a
problem," she said.
Conditions across Newfoundland's Strait of
Belle Isle have caused days-long delays for
the provincial ferry Apollo.

The regular monthly meeting of the CMMC
NL Division took place at the Crow’s Nest.
This meeting was a very important one as
the Division hoped to form a committee to
find out what should be the best way to
handle any surplus money from the Nautical
Skills Competition (NSC).
The Division has a speaker for April 28,
2015 meeting. She is Ms Jennifer Smith who
is doing some marine research.
