Hello again and welcome to my favourite month of the year. Why youmay be asking? Simply because it is Tour De France month, of coursewe have the Olympics as well, but The Tour is an annual tradition inour house, and as such we watch the whole thing, still hoping for thatelusive overall British victory. This said there is a whole lot more tolook forward to in the summer - holidays, events and for our youngerreaders - no school for 6 weeks! The Deans magazine website is once again live, a much more humbleeffort than last year’s very ambitious design, it still has the onlineversion of the magazine for the current month, as well as earliereditions. Find us at www.deansmagazine.co.ukEnjoy the summer and remember if you see the sun get out and enjoyit, who knows how long it will be shining! There is no shortage ofthings to do and see in The Deans.

7Artist of the month

AnnabelGlauser

Art has always been my first love, and, although I studied French at university after leaving school, and worked forseveral years in television in London, I returned to the world of art in my late twenties. I studied part-time, first atChelsea College of Art & Design (BTEC/Fine Art Portfolio Development) and then at Central Saint Martin’s(Certificate of Higher Education in Fine Art). Whilst studying at CSM, I also worked four days a week in a centralLondon gallery, so in a sense I was learning about the art world from two different perspectives.I initially specialised in Sculpture, but became veryinterested in photography, through the process ofphotographing my works. When I returned to live onthe South Coast a few years later, I made it my goalto learn the technical skills behind photography. In2008, I acquired a second-hand digital SLR cameraand joined the Brighton & Hove Camera Club, whichI attended for a couple of years. In 2010, Icompleted an NCFE Certificate in Photography atCity College, taking part in the end of year show atthe Connaught Centre in Hove. That Summer, I alsoexhibited a selection of my photographs at theOpen Art Gallery Café in Rottingdean.I’ve recently been experimenting with macrophotography, which has opened up new creativepossibilities. I enjoy photographing nature, creatingsimple and, I hope, beautiful images. Of course, the

idea of ‘beauty’ is subjective, but I know what I aminstinctively drawn to, and I prefer to make imageswhich are, for me, uplifting rather thanconfrontational. I’m inspired by the landscape, byflowers and plants, interesting light patterns and theeffect of light on water. The majority of my imagesare in colour, as colour is very important to me inthe way that it creates mood and feeling in my work, but I have recently started experimenting withmonochrome. I like desaturating images, while atthe same time retaining colour in selected areas. It’svery effective and using Photoshop as a creativetool can be great fun.A selection of my images are currently available asphoto-cards at Arty phArty Studios & Art Shop, 8Nevill Road, Rottingdean.

Small businessSecurity

9

Being small means you're off the radar as far as hackers are concerned - doesn't it? After all, why wouldthey bother with you? You don't need to bother with all sorts of fancy security measures now do you?Pick this theory up and turn it on its head, then you're lookingat the truth.

Whilst there may be glory hunting hackers out there who areafter a real challenge, this is like assuming that all thieves areonly after the crown jewels and wouldn't bother breaking intoyour little house.

Hackers are much more likely to target small businesses as theyknow they will be far easier to access. The larger the company, the larger the IT budget, the better the security measures.

So what have you got to lose? No, seriously, what have you gotto lose?

It's worth you sitting back and thinking about the consequencesof your systems being breached - what would a hacker haveaccess to?

Your emails? Your client’s details? Your files? Your bankaccounts - whoa, hang on here....whilst all of this is dire, let’sstop at bank accounts for a moment. Did you know thatbusiness bank accounts don't have the same kind of liabilityprotection as do consumers? That's right, if a hacker gets intoyou business bank account they can clear it out and leave youwith nobody to blame but yourself.

Just because you are a small business doesn't mean that it willbe difficult for hackers to find you - they use automated tools toseek out security holes so there is a stronger chance that theywill find you than that they won't.

We are more than happy to discuss your IT security with youand will be able to provide you with all the solutions that youneed. In the meantime we wish you, as always, continuedhappy and safe computing.

Saltdean Lido - latest news11Saltdean Lido news update

Lido Nights - MayLive music at Saltdean Community Centre

The last week of May was certainly one on which the resi-dents of Saltdean will look back with delight. Once again, the sun shone on the Campaign's second Fun Day andwhilst we had promised "bigger and better" the generalview appears to be that it exceeded all expectations. Infact, it seemed, looking at the thousands of people takingpart in the various activities or enjoying the entertainment, that the entire population of the Deans had descendedupon the park to have fun. Much of the credit has to go toour army of wonderful volunteers and to the local busi-nesses and organisations who so generously supportedthe event.  There is a slideshow of wonderful photographsfrom both the day and evening events on our websitewww.saltdeanlidocampaign.org

Only days later came the historic moment for which we'dbeen waiting so impatiently, when Council's Policy & Re-sources Committee approved the agreement to recoverthe lease of the Lido. The site is now back in the hands ofBrighton & Hove City Council and they expect to have

come to a decision about its future management by theend of this year.

We have always believed that the best way of ensuringthe long-term safety of the site is for the Lido to be run bythe community and to that end, we are recruiting Directorsfor the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company - asocial enterprise which would see profits reinvested in thesite. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who feelsthey would like to get involved as a Director (unpaid volun-tary positions, similar to the Trustees of a charity).  Whilstwe are particularly looking for people with relevant skills orexperience, we would still like to hear from you if youshare our passion for this wonderful building and our com-mitment to providing modern, vibrant community facilities. For further information and job descriptions please [email protected] or call Rebeccaon 01273 307010 for an informal chat.

May 19 saw the recently formed 80s tribute band “Epic 80s” at the Lido playing one of their first ever live gigs

Ahh the 80’s. I remember them well. If like me this periodcovered your youthful “pubbing and night clubbing years” youwill have fond memories of sporting some shockingly dodgyclothes, wearing equally ridiculous haircuts, owning a mobilephone the size of a housebrick (with no reception) and not beingable to get a drink anywhere after 11pm except in a nightclub! And God forbid you should try and get into that nightclubwearing jeans or a shirt without a collar! The music however was great. A real diversity of bands andsounds as new music technology properly kicked in. What a treatthen to have the terrific 80s tribute band “Epic 80’s” grace thestage of the lido in May. This is the first time I have seen a bandreplicate so competently the sound and feel of those 80’s songs.“Epic 80’s” want to get people dancing, so much of their materialis a mixture of soul, funk, dance grooves and club anthems from

that era. Think Luther Vandross, Shalamar, Fatback Band, TheJacksons and you will get the musical picture. Two top qualityvocalists front the band, Jason Laroche and Lauren Rodbard. Formale vocalists 80’s songs are in notoriously high keys (they didn’tused to wear those tight trousers for nothing!) but Jason hitthose notes effortlessly and in the lovely Lauren I think we havea bit of a star. She has a natural stage presence that you can’tbuy or teach and a great voice to back it up. The harmonies andblend of voices were also spot on. Add to this a bass and drumsrhythm section that was as tight as a pair of those 80’s trousers,a very cool looking guitarist plus some quite brilliant keyboardwork by Darren Soffe and you have a band that will very soonbe commanding top dollar on the corporate circuit.Just remember you saw them first at Lido Nights!

Saltdean Community Association news4317Saltdean Community Associatin

The Saltdean Community Association (SCA) were delighted that Brighton & Hove City Councilwere able to successfully conclude negotiations with our former landlord to take back into

The SCA manages and operates the communitycentre and helps to provide classes or activities formore than 25 groups and 700 people weekly aswell as the highly popular Lido Nights.  In addition, the halls are booked for private functions includingwedding receptions.

At the time of writing the SCA have been invited byBrighton & Hove City Council to enter intonegotiations to confirm a new lease with the councilto ensure that community facilities will be protectedwithin the Lido building.

We believe that a truly independent SCA has a vitalrole to play if B&HCC decide to go out to tender toinvite organisations to bid to run the Lido site, onlyby being independent can we ensure that realcommunity provision remains at the heart of theLido’s future.

The trustees have only ever sought to serve localresidents by continuing to provide much valued

community services.  Like you, we carepassionately about our wonderful building and withyour help and participation we can meet thechallenges ahead.

A Room Full of BonesSaltdean library book Launch for local author - Thursday 10th May 2012.

A little while ago I came across Domenica de Rosa walking along the sea front at Saltdean, with a friend. We wavedand briefly smiled at each other; comparing notes at her latest book launch at Saltdean library, Domenica told meshe had been returning from the beach that had helped to inspire an important location in her book House at Sea’sEnd written under the pseudonym of Elly Griffiths.Following on from this book Elly Griffiths has just hadpublished, her fourth book in the series depicting theinvestigations of Doctor Ruth Galloway the intrepid forensicarchaeologist, often shortened to Doctor Ruth by USreaders. A Room Full of Bones begins with the mysteriousdeath of a museum’s curator. Threatening demands for thereturn of a collection of indigenous Australian boneshoused at the museum are followed by the death of itsaristocratic owner; this proves to be just the beginning ofthe sinister and surreal turns ahead.Saltdean Scribblers, a local creative writing group, hostedthe launch of this book at the Saltdean library to celebratethe success of a local author as one of their own. EllyGriffiths has lived in Saltdean since the age of five, exceptfor a break when she was at university in London, and oftenjoins the Scribblers for writing exercises and general chatson the writing process. The strong connection and affectionbetween the local writers was manifest that evening.

Robert Upward from the Scribblers welcomed Elly Griffithsas she went on to introduce her new book and read anextract. We learnt that the Booth museum in Hoveprovided inspiration for the book along with herarchaeologist husband. Absorbing the packed library withDoctor Ruth’s first encounter with the ill fated museum ofthe plot it was clear our hero was going into new territoryand the listeners wanted more. After the reading earlypaperback copies of her book were available with donationsgoing to Project Antifreeze a charity that offers spiritual, practical and emotional support to anyone in need on thestreets of Brighton and Hove.It was a special evening for Elly Griffiths: her husband, children and sister were there making it a truly family affairalong with her extended family, Saltdean.Saltdean Scribbler, Roger Bluff.

31Roedean Cafe review 29

By Matt EbelingReaders of the Deans Magazine with good memories will remember when we did a review of the Roedean Cafe afew years ago, are they still providing good service? Deans resident - Matt Ebeling - shares his experience.

I was working a late shift the other Friday, and my wifesuggested that we went out for a late breakfast. “Butit’s lunch time,” I pointed out, thinking that everywherelocally stops serving breakfast at 11am. Not so, theRoedean Café. With its own traffic lights and anenormous free car park for customers (café and golf),the Roedean Café sits overlooking the sea and BrightonMarina. We decided it was too breezy to sit outside andopted for a booth by the window. The sunshineafforded us a great view of the Marina. An outside tablewould have allowed us to look at the golfers andRoedean School, where the pupils walk the corridors ofgirl power. My wife ordered the set breakfast and Iplumped for the Roedean Special. With a price tag ofover £7, the Special is not a cheap option. On the otherhand, for your money, you get two fried eggs, twosausages, two rashers of bacon, two slices of toast, twohash browns, two tomato halves, baked beans and a cup

of tea, made fresh in a pot. The set breakfast is half ofthe Special (no tea included) and costs under £5. We sat for only a few minutes before the breakfastsarrived. We swapped some of my baked beans for mywife’s tomato half and then we settled down to eating. The quality of the Roedean Specials easily matches itsquantity and filled me up for most of the remainder ofthe day. Our fellow customers, a golfer, a couple of youngfamilies, two men talking business and a number ofretired folk seemed to be enjoying their meals as muchas we did. They could read the newspapers available tocustomers or look at the photographs of celebrities whohave availed themselves of the Roedean experience. Would we go again? Would I have the Roedean Specialagain? Absolutely ‘yes’, on both counts.

35Successful Letting

Successful Renting 15 with Denise Whittington of Lets Go

Weathering the StormThe sales and lettings markets seem to be especially changeable at the moment, a bit like theweather: sunshine one minute, floods and gale force winds the next.

The general trend in our area in the past few months hasbeen that there have been fewer properties on the mar-ket to rent, whilst the number of properties for sale hasincreased. Many sellers seem to be ‘testing the market’.For some this has not resulted in the sale they hadhoped for, and they are now looking at the rental mar-ket for a solution.

Continuing financial uncertainty has meant that peoplehave had to be more imaginative and flexible, and re-sponsive to market trends. The sales process does notalways go smoothly and with the best will in the worldyou cannot control what will happen especially if youare in a chain of buyers and sellers. Sales can, and do fallthrough.

This can leave you in a difficult situation if you havecompleted on a purchase but the buyer for your proper-ty has pulled out.

One option is to rent out the property you have bought,to provide an income whilst you look for another buyerfor the property you want to sell. Short lets of 6 monthsor less are becoming more popular as a flexible alterna-tive to long term renting.

Alternatively you can move in to the property you havebought as planned, and rent out the one you have beentrying to sell. And your tenant may be willing to agree tothe property still being marketed for sale, especially ifthey have been in a similar situation themselves.

Letting out your property to provide an income contin-ues to be an option in the short to medium term forthose whose life circumstances have changed but whodo not want to sell at the moment, and can provide a‘breathing space’ before longer term decisions aremade.

For example, when a remaining parent becomes ill andcan no longer live in their own home, rental income cancontribute to care fees. Decisions on the future of theproperty can be made one step at a time, and when allconcerned are feeling stronger emotionally. Sometimeswe have to just ‘wait and see’ what happens over time.Relationship breakdown is another life changing circum-stance where letting out the marital home can provide a

short to medium term solution whilst long term deci-sions are being made.

At Lets Go we understand how difficult it can be to makedecisions, especially if you have found yourself in unex-pected circumstances, and need advice………..

If you need help and advice to make a decision aboutrenting out your property and would like to have a chatwith Denise visit Lets Go at 59 High Street, Rottingdean,Brighton, ‘phone 01273 236547 or email to:[email protected].

Local History - Part 5. Sir Edward Burne – Jones’ seaside retreat

Church memorial

Burne – Jones, William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti were leading members of the Pre – Raphaelitemovement, so called because they considered anything painted since Raphael to be lacking.

Their models were usually beautiful working class girls, whom they courted or even married. Most famous forhis stained glass and for his intricate paintings ofmediaeval subjects, Burne –Jones was the humble son ofa Birmingham picture framer who became so successfulthat he was the first artist to have a memorial service inWestminster Abbey. Though his 1898 memorial servicetook place at Westminster Abbey, his ashes are buried inRottingdean churchyard, a fact commemorated by amemorial to the south of the church door.Sir Edward and his wife Georgiana lived in Fulham and in1880 they chose a seaside retreat on The Green atRottingdean, purchasing Prospect Cottage and AubreyCottage. A blue plaque is on the former. These twoproperties became known as North End House. Hismuch loved daughter Margaret was married in StMargaret’s Church in 1888, for which occasion he

designed and donated seven stained glass windows tothe church, including one of St. Margaret. He was oftenvisited by his granddaughter, Angela Thirkell, who wrotemany books including National Velvet and The ChalkGarden.A subsequent purchaser of the property, Sir RoderickJones, also acquired the Gothic House to the north butthe three houses are once again separate cottages, thenorthern one alone now bearing the name North EndHouse. Note its black mathematical tiles which wereoften used to make an old timber building appear like anexpensive, new, brick built one. Sir Roderick’s wife wasthe author Enid Bagnold, who wrote “National Velvet.”
