From the RectorYou Renew the Face of the Earth, Psalm 104:30

Fire, wind and the renewal of creation are the ideas that informed out Pentecost cover this year. The line from Psalm 104 (which is the Psalm appointed for today) forms a spiral around an open space where the world might be. Spirals are ancient symbols for both spirituality and creation. Behind the text of the Psalm blue and yellow watercolors meet in an abstract representation of the wind and fire of the spirit.

In our tradition we believe that the world was created by the word of God speaking into the middle of chaos. In Hebrew the word for breath is the same as the word for spirit: Ruach. So the spirit, or breath, of God literally carries the word of creation, bringing order where there was chaos.

The spirit of God is there in creation.

The spirit of God is there again on the day of Pentecost, but this time the chaos is the broken and confused emotions of the disciples, and the act of creation brings the church into being.

Peter and the Disciples’ heads were spinning. They had been to Jerusalem with their friend and leader, they had seen him tried and killed, they had scattered and gradually found each other, only to hear that he was alive. They met him, in the upper room, and on the road, and on a hillside, and on a beach, he was their friend, but somehow mysterious. Then he left them, disappearing mysteriously and promising to send something to help them.

This prompted them to return to Jerusalem and wait in the upper room for the promise. They must have been feeling every emotion imaginable, fear, joy, confusion. They had gone through a time of great change and now they didn’t know what to expect.

When the day of Pentecost came, a Jewish festival of harvest, they were all in one place, and suddenly they heard the sound of a violent wind.

It was the breath of God, speaking a new word of creation, calling them to a new way of being, giving them a new purpose.

On this Pentecost, thousands of years later, may we be open to the moving of the same spirit, who brought creation into being, who brought the church into being, who may help us to renew the face of the earth.

Love,
