On May 26, the senior adults will travel by bus to

Stearns Ky and take a three hour train trip. The train,

trip, and lunch will cost $31. This group is open to

anyone age 55 and older. Please contact Jane Clark

(270-781-6420) or Bonnie Carter (270-842-0852) if

you'd like to go.

It was exciting to have 1005 here at church for Easter.

Thank you to everyone who helped by inviting someone

to come with you and to those who helped serve in our

outreach efforts to the community. Bro. Tim asked us in

staff meeting which activity was the most effective in

helping us make the goal. There is no real way to know

that since we do not have a way to get that information

from those who attend. The real answer is probably eve-

rything. Each activity leaves an impression on someone.

This year, some of our Easter outreach activities were: we

participated in the Easter Egg Hunt at South Warren with

four other organizations where thousands of folks heard

about our church, we mailed 1000 postcards to the com-

munity around the church, distributed 600 invite cards for

folks to use in inviting others and sent a OneCall to the

community and all church members reminding them of

our Easter services. All of those things worked together to

encourage folks to come. The next question is “How do

we get them to come back?” If you invited someone to

come, ask them what they enjoyed about Easter? And

encourage them to come back. Another good thing to ask

is, “Do you have any questions about the service or the

church?” These are open ended questions which lead to

more discussion. Helping identify next steps for them is

also helpful. The next step for some might be to come so

that they and their children can come to a small group on

Sunday. Vacation Bible School is another big opportunity

to invite others. The bottom line is that it takes all of us

working together to reach others. Thanks for being a part

of the Lord’s work in reaching others.

Serving Together,

Warren Weeks

Partner with Journey Church the month of May Journey Church is moving right along. May is an important month for us as a church plant. Even though we launch in the fall we have a lot of groundwork to lay before that important day. Here are some ways that you can be involved in the month of May: Preparation Day for the Building and Property Saturday, May 13

th beginning at 9am till whenev-

er. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Some things on our list: trash pick up, painting, cleaning, cutting down/clearing out trees in a fence line, landscaping, building a sound booth, minor repairs, pressure washing, etc. If you are willing to help please email me at [email protected] with what you are in-terested in and some contact info. Neighborhood Block Party If you can help with passing out flyers on a street or two the week prior please let me know. Week of May 22-26 If you want to help with the event itself (Saturday, May 27

th), here are some things we are thinking

about doing: kid games and activities, DJ, food preparation and serving, giveaways, registration, face-painting, inflatables, jump rope, soccer. Actual Block Party will be Saturday, May 27

th from

11am till 1:30pm or so.

Email me at [email protected] if you are interested. Please leave contact info and what

you’d like to be involved in.

3. ONLY FRIENDS CAN FOLLOW YOU.

Sometimes parents think that if they follow rule 1 and have the account private they’re all set. But that only covers one side of the street, social media goes both ways. I love that L.E. has friends from school, church and her neighborhood who follow her, but she doesn’t need a bunch of strangers monitoring her visual life. Every time someone random requests to follow her, we talk about it. Only friends can follow you.

4. PRIVATE INFORMATION STAYS PRIVATE.

You’d be surprised at how many teens post their phone numbers, addresses and even screenshots of their driver’s license online. Unless we’re on vacation, we also don’t tag our location in the photo. It might seem like a minor thing but the risks of sharing private information online far outweigh any possible benefits. Private information stays private.

5. BATHING SUIT PHOTOS DON’T GET POSTED.

This one might be unique to having a teenage daugh-ter, but as we work toward understanding modesty, we make decisions like this. It’s not about being ashamed of your body or trying to live up to a certain standard of beauty. It’s about realizing that a photo you post can never be deleted. Even if you remove it, it’s now on servers you’ll never have access to. Mod-esty matters. Bathing suit photos don’t get posted.

Are these all the issues you should think about with Instagram? Of course not, but hopefully they will start the conversation.

Don’t turn your kid loose online and just hope for the best.

Be deliberate. Be involved. Be curious.

Nichole Buckman

As I’m online and using various types of social media I’m notic-ing more and more of our elementary grade kids also using social media. It can be a great tool to connect us, but like any-thing that seems good it can be misused as well. Here is an article from Jon Acuff on his take on kids and social media. My hope is that it will give you the encouragement and reassur-ance to navigate social media usage with your kids. -Nichole

5 RULES WE GAVE OUR 13-YEAR-OLD WHEN SHE JOINED IN-STAGRAM

Posted by Jon Acuff

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I had a whole lot of ideas about raising a teenager in a social media world right up to the moment that I actually had a teenager in a social media world.

When my 13-year-old daughter wanted to join Instagram, we didn’t treat it like a casual experience. It was to be her first foray into the world of social media. I knew the potential for fun and the peril for mistakes that using a social media app represented.

But I also don’t believe the Internet is an evil devil machine designed to ruin our kids. All too often the media only hypes that bad moments, completely ignoring the great things that happen when you teach your kid a healthy approach to tech-nology.

In order to help L.E. with Instagram, we gave her five simple rules:

1. THE ACCOUNT STAYS PRIVATE.

There are a lot of points that can be argued about social me-dia, but this one feels very clear to me. There is absolutely zero reason for a 13-year-old to have a public Instagram account. Unless the 13-year-old is a cutting edge tech startup CEO run-ning a million dollar business, they aren’t using social media to build a platform. They are using it to connect with friends. The account stays private.

2. THE PASSWORDS ARE SHARED.

Whenever I hear a friend say, “My son won’t give me his Insta-gram password” or “My daughter won’t let us follow her” I giggle. Unless your kid is paying for their own phone, own data plan and while we’re at it, own room and board, that’s your phone. Imagine if you came home one day and your kid had installed a new lock on their bedroom door. You’d laugh and then immediately remove the lock. The passwords are shared

Playing Favorites As parents, we’re not supposed to do it. Nor as friends. And especially as pastors. But I confess: I’m playing favorites. Right now my 2nd favorite ministry member is Zach Watts. If you don’t know Zach but worship in the Sanctuary service on Sunday mornings, you’ve probably heard him play trum-pet or seen him portray an angel in the “Living Christmas Cards” in December. Zach has been coming to WBC for about 8 months. But Zach’s trumpeting and angel mimicking are not the rea-sons he’s my 2nd favorite.

In short, here are the six reasons why: Drew, Tanissa, Kayla, Caleb, Ashley, and Christina. In less than 8 months, Zach has brought 6 people to Wood-burn. That I know of. And all of them have played an instrument in worship. And some of them want to come regularly, whether they are asked to play or not. 6 people have gladly come because one guy invited them in the last 8 months. And so you might be wondering why Zach is my 2nd favor-ite. Simple. Somebody invited Zach. A couple of years ago, Joshua Miller started inviting Zach. It took six invitations before Joshua and I were sitting at Applebee’s one night and he suggested I ask Zach to come when I was looking for a trumpet player. It isn’t just Joshua and Zach. There are people in our town waiting to be invited. You don’t have to bribe or promise anything… other than a place filled with real people who love people. Who is waiting on your invitation to find what you’ve found? Rod

Every year we honor our high school graduates at our an-nual Graduate Recognition Service. Last year we made a slight change in the name of the service and the focus of the night. Many wouldn’t even notice but this slight differ-ence makes all the difference. We began calling the ser-vice Graduate Commissioning. We felt that the step from high school into college, the military, a gap year, or the job force is so important and so much bigger than just recognizing the achievement of graduating. This is a step into what God has for our graduates. It’s a step that we should not take lightly but should focus on the advance-ment of the Kingdom of God through the lives of every one of our students. Every student is not going to be a pastor or a vocational missionary, even though we’d love to see more of our students serving in these capacities, but every student that is a follower of Christ is a Kingdom advancer. If they become a nurse they should see that profession as a platform for the Gospel. If they are going into the military they should see the military as a place to advance the Kingdom of God. If they work in hospitality, insurance, business, retail, or Waffle House it should be the place where the love and work of Christ becomes prominent through their lives. We live in a world that is all about “me,” increasing portfolios, having a big house, getting ahead of the field, and securing ourselves for re-tirement. This isn’t what God has called us to as followers. He has called us to a Kingdom work and He wants to use our students who choose nursing or funeral directing or food service to do His work. We want to send our stu-dents off into the next stage of life emboldened with the understanding that what they are doing is BIG. What they are doing has a PURPOSE. What they are doing is IMPACT-FUL. What they are doing has the PRAYERS and SUPPORT of their church behind them. Join us on Wednesday, May 17th at 6pm for this night of commissioning. Parents, please see details of the night on this page to get your student signed up and ready for their Graduate Commis-sioning Service.

Our Vacation Bible School this year will fall in line with our approach to small groups. If you have ever considered leading in VBS and are really passionate about reflecting the love of Christ through building relationships you would be a perfect Small Group Leader. We are looking for Small Group Leaders who are growing in their faith and want to help kids learn how to apply the lesson they receive in large group in a real way to their everyday lives through activities and discussion.

Our VBS is scheduled for June 12 - 16 from 9a.m. -

Noon. I'd love to talk with you more about how

you can be a positive spiritual influence in the lives

of our kids. Just send me a PM or call the church

office.
