"Yea, he magnified himself even tothe prince of the host, and by himthe d.lly .acrlflce was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary wascast down. And an host was givenhim against the dally .acrlflce byreason of transgression, and it castdown the truth to the ground; and itpractised, and prospered. Then Iheard one saint speaking, and an-other saint said unto that certainsaint which spake, How long shallbe the vision concerning the dally.acrlflce, and the transgression ofdesolation, to give both the sanc-tuary and the host to be troddenunder foot? And he said unto me,Unto two thousand and three hun-dred days; then shall the sanctuarybe cleansed." - Daniel 8:11-14.

The Spirit of Prophecy, comment-ing on the text, shows the word,"sacrifice," was supplied; but thatwe must hold to the "Daily" as it isevident that a vital truth is involvedin the words, "Daily" and "Sanc-tuary." It was also pointed out thatthe word "Daily" is correct. Conse-quently, we must learn what morethis vital truth holds for us today.(Shepherd's Rod, Vol. 2, pp. 130,131; Early Writings, p.74.)

" to be off.red d.lly (Num. 28:3,6) In the Talmud, when tamid isused independently as here [Dan.8:11], the word con.l.tently de-

not the d.lly .. crlflc . The trans-lators of the KJV [King JamesVersion], who supplied the word'sacrifice,' obviously believed thatthe dally burnt offering wasthe sub-ject of the prophecy." - Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary,Vol. 4, p. 842. [Brackets Ours]

To say, "Daily Sacrifice," would besomewhat like the colloquialism,"two twins." Only one word in eachcase is necessary - the meaning isobvious. "Twins" means "two.""Daily" includes two sacrifices, morning and evening, and therendering is continual, endless.

The true understanding of the word"Daily" involves the morning andevening sacrifice, at the third andninth hours. "Command the child-ren of Israel, and say unto them,My offering, and my bread for mysacrifices made by fire, for a sweetsavour unto me, shall ye observe tooffer unto me in their dueseason....two lambs of the first year withoutspot day by d.y, for a continualburnt offering. The one lamb shaltthou offer in the morning, and theother lamb shalt thou offer at even;... It is a continual burnt offering, which wa. ordained In mount Sinaifor a sweet savour, a sacrifice madeby fire unto the Lord .... And theother lamb shalt shou offer at even:as the meatoffering of the morning,

    3

  • and as the drink offering thereof, thou shalt offer it, a sacrifice madeby fire, of a sweet savour unto theLord." - Numbers 28:2-4,6,8.

According to the Sanctuary service, every day involved a morning andevening sacrifice. Hence, when the"Daily" was referred to, Israelunderstood it involved a sacrifice, morning and evening. In fact, theone term suggested the other.Notice the marginal rendering of thetext in Daniel 8:14, "Unto two thou-sand and three hundred days."Margin, "evening and morning."(2300 morning sacrifices and 2300evening sacrifices or 2300 days -dailies.)

In the antitype, Christ fufilled theSanctuary law of both the morningand the evening sacrifice. He wasnailed to the cross at the third hour,9 o'clock (Num. 28:4). "And whenthey had crucified him, they partedhis garments, casting lots uponthem, what every man should take. And it was the third hour, and theycrucified him." Mark 15:24,25. Hedied at the ninth hour, 3 o'clock(Num. 28:8). "And at the ninth hourJesus cried with a loud voice, say-Ing, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?which is, being interpreted, My God,my God, why hast thou forsakenme? And some of them that stoodby, when they heard it, said, Behold,he called Elias. And one ran andfilled a sponge full of vinegar, andput it on a reed, and gave him todrink, saying, Let alone; let us seewhether Elias will come to take himdown. And Jesus cried with a loudvoice, and gave up the ghost. Andthe veil of the temple was rent intwain from the top to the bottom."- Mark 15:34-38.

"When the loud cry, 'It is finished,'

came from the lips of Christ, thepriests were officiating in the tem-ple. It wa. the hour of the evening..crlflce .... All is terror and con-

. fusion. The priest is about to slay thevictim; but the knife drops from hisnerveless hand, and the lamb es-capes. Type ha. met entltype In thedeath of God'. Son. The great sacri-fice has been made .... A new andliving way I. prepared for all. Nolonger need sinful, sorrowinghumanity await the coming of thehigh priest. Henceforth the Saviourwas to officiate as priest and advo-cate in the heavenof heavens. It wasas if a living voice had spoken to theworshipers: There is now an end toall sacrifices and offerings for sin.The Son of God is come accordingto His word, 'Lo, I come (in the vol-ume of the Book it iswritten of Me,)to do Thy will, 0 God,' 'By His ownblood' He entereth 'in once into theholy place, having obtained eternalredemption for us.' Heb. 10:7;9:12."- The Desire of Ages, pp. 756,757.(Paren. Theirs)

He arose in time, early the first dayof the week, to present the wave-sheaf at the third hour (9 o'clock inthe morning) in the HeavenlySanc-tuary; then, returned to earth thesame morning with those who as-cended with Him, and labored fortydays to gather the 120who receivedthe outpouring of the Spirit on thevery day of Pentecost: "For theseare not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of theday." - Acts 2:15.

Remember, the one hundred andtwenty received the outpouring ofpower on the day the first-fruitswere offered, Pentecost, fifty daysafter Jesus was raised from thedead; conclusive proof that these

ceremonial offerings were not nail-ed to the cross, but were observedby Jesus and the disciples after thecrucifixion. '

"The ceremonial law was given byChrist. Even after it (typical) was nolonger to beobserved,Paulpre.ent-ed It before the Jew. In Ita truepo.ltlon end value, .howlng It.piece In the plan of redemption andits relation to the work of Christ; ...The solemn service of the sanctuarytypified the grand truths that wereto be revealed through successivegenerations .... the bleeding vic-tim on the altar of sacrifice testifiedof a Redeemerto come ... " - Patri-archs and Prophets, p. 367. (Paren.Ours)

These facts help us to see that theceremonial law wasnot nailed to thecross: only the .acrlflce, the Lambof God, was nailed to the cross tomeet the demands of the law.

"Broadly speaking, the lawof Mosesconsists of three parts. The first isthe Ceremonial law, the law of thetemple - the sacrificial law. Thislaw, of course, we today must notobserve, except In entltype .... "-Timely Greetings, Vol. 2, No. 37,pp.14,15.

The Seventh-day Sabbath is a"Daily" in that it consists of a morn-ing and evening sacrifice (Num. 28:9,10).Accord ing to Leviticus 23:3, itis the first feast mentioned. Thesame is true of each of the specialsabbaths enumerated in the chap-ter, each of which has its specialoffering, besides the continual, morning and evening sacrifice, the"Daily."

"Not only the sanctuary itself, butthe ministration of the priests, was

to 'serve unto the example and.hadow of heavenly thing .' He-brews 8:5. Thus It w.. of greet im-portance; and the Lord, throughMoses, gave the most definite andexplicit instruction concerningevery point of this typical .ervlce.The ministration of the sanctuaryconsisted of two divisions, a dailyand a yearly service. The dailyservicewas performed at the altar ofburnt offering in the court of thetabernacle and in the holy piece;while the yearly service was in themo.t holy." - Patriarchs andProphets, p. 351.

"The daily service consisted of themorning and evening burnt offering, the offering of sweet incense on thegolden altar, and the special offer-ings for individual sins. And therewere also offerings for sabbaths, new moons, and speclal feasts." -Ibid., p. 352.

"Every morning and evening a lambof a year old was burned upon thealtar, with its appropriate meat-offering, thus .ymbollzlng the dailycon.ecration of the nation to Jeho-vah, and their con.tant (continual)dependence upon the atoningblood of Christ .... The apostle Paulpoints to these sacrifices as anillustration of what the followers ofChrist are to become. He says, 'Ibeseech you therefore, brethren,by the mercies of God, that ye pre-sent your bodies a "vlng sacrifice, holy acceptable unto GOd,which isyour reasonable service.' Romans12:1." -Ibid., p.352. (Paren. Ours)

How better could we do this than toobserve the "Daily," the morningand evening sacrifice? Christ Him-self became a Living Sacrifice for usIn the Heavenly Sanctuary. For theservant of the Lord tells us: "By

    5

  • blood and by incense God was to beapproached - symbols pointing tothe great Mediator, through whomsinners mayapproach Jehovah, andthrough whom alone mercy andsalvation can be granted to therepentant, believing soul .... Thehourw appointed for the morningand the evening sacrifice wereregarded as "cred (holy, set aside),and they came to beobserved asthe.. t Umefor worwhlp throughout theJewish nation. And when in latertimes the Jews were scattered ascaptives in distant lands, they .tlllat the appointed hour turned theirfaces toward Jerusalem and offeredup their petitions to the God ofIsrael. In thl. cu.tom Chrl.tlan.have an example for morning andevening prayer. While God con-demns a mere round of ceremonies, without the spirit of worship, Helooks with great pleasure uponthose who love Him, bowing morn-Ing and evening to seek pardon forsins committed and to present theirrequests for needed blessings." _Ibid., pp. 353,354. (Paren. Ours)

"Morning and evening the heavenlyuniverse behold every householdthat prays, and the angel with theincense, representing the blood ofthe atonement, finds access toGOd." - Manuscript 15, 1897. SeeS.D.A. Bible Commentary, Vol. 7,971.

"True reverence for God is inspiredby a sense of His infinite greatnessand a realization of His presence. With this senseof the Unseen, everyheart should be deeply impressed. The hour and place of prayer aresacred, because God is there." _Prophets and Kings, pp. 48,49.

"Abraham, 'the friend of God,' set usa worthy example. His was a life of

prayer. Wherever he pitched histent, close beside it was set up hisaltar, calling all within his encamp-ment to the morning and evening"crlflce." - Patriarchs and Proph-ets, p. 128.

"The most important part of thedally ministration was the serviceperformed in behalf of individuals.... Such was the work that went onday by day throughoutthe year.Thesins of Israel being thus transferredto the sanctuary ... " - Ibid., pp.354,355. '

So it is now, we have such an HighPriest Who is entered "into heavenitself, now to appear in the presenceof God for us." - Hebrews 9:24.

We have needof a daily, yes, hourly(morning, 9 o'clock and evening,3 o'clock) mediation tor sin anduncleanness, much the more as theday approaches when wickednessand uncleanness are on every sidedo we, as believers, need the "breadof the presence" ever near "beforethe face of the Lord" for us (Patri-archs and Prophets, p. 354).

"Moses made the earthly sanctuary,'according to the fashion that hehad seen.' Paul declares that 'thetabernacle and ali the vesselsof theministry,' when completed, were'the patterns of things in the heav-ens.' Acts 7:44; Hebrews 9:21,23.And John says that hesawthe sanc-tuary in heaven. Thatsanctuary, inwhich Jesus ministers in our behalf,

. I. the great original, of which thesanctuary built by Moses was acopy." - Ibid., p. 357.

"The heavenly temple, the abidingplace of the King of kings, where'thousand thousands ministered un-to Him, and ten thousand times tenthousand stood before Him,' .... no

    6

earthly structure could represent itsvastness and its glory. Yet Import-ant truths concerning the heavenlysanctuary and the great work therecarried forward for man'. redemp-tion were to be taught by the earthly.anctuary and Ita .ervlces." -Ibid.,p.357.

"And what wa. done In type in them'inistration of the earthly sanctuaryI. done In reality In the mlnl.tra-tlon of the heavenly sanctuary." -The Great Controversy, p. 420.

"As anciently the sins of the peoplewere by faith placed upon the sinoffering and through its blood trans-ferred, in figure, to the earthly sanc-tuary, so in the new covenant the.In. of the reprentant are by faithplaced upon Christ and transferred,In fact, to the heavenly .anctuary."-Ibid., p. 421.

"And as the typical cleansing of theearthly was accomplished by theremoval of the sins by which it hadbeen polluted, so the actual cleans-ing of the heavenly is to be accom-plished by the removal, or blottingout, of the sins which are thererecorded. But before this can beaccomplished, there must be anexamination of the books of recordto determine who, through repent-ance of sin and by faith in Christ, are entitled to the benefits of Hisatonement. The cleansing of thesanctuary therefore involves aworkof investigation - a work of judg-ment. Thl. work mu.t be performedprior to the coming of Chrl.t toredeem HI. people; for when Hecomes, His reward is with Him togive to every man according to hisworks. Revelation 22:12." - Ibid.,pp. 421,422.

"It was seen, also, that while the sin

offering pointed to Christ asasacri-fice, and the high priest representedChrist as a mediator, the scape-goat typified Satan, the author ofsin .. ." - Ibid., p. 422.

"Christ was the foundation of theJewish economy. The whole systemof types and symbols was a com-pacted prophecy of the gospel, apresentation in which were boundup the promises of redemption." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 14.

"After His ascension, our Saviourwas to begin His work as our HighPriest. Says Paul, 'Christ is notentered into the holy places madewith hands, which are the figuresof the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear In the presence ofGod for us.' Hebrews 9:24. AsChrist's ministration was to consistof two great divisions, eachoccupy-a period of time and having a dis-tinctive place in the heavenly sane-tuary, so the typical ministrationconsisted of two divisions, the dallyand the yearly service, and to eacha department of the tabernacle wasdevoted." - Patriarchs and Proph-ets, p. 357."As Christ at Hisascension appear-ed in the presence of God to pleadHis blood in behalf of penitentbelievers, so the priest in the defly.ministration sprinkled the blooo ofsacrifice in the holy place in thesinner's behalf." - Ibid., p. 357.

"Thus in the ministration of thetabernacle, and of the temple thatafterward took its place, the peoplewere taught each day the greattruths relative to Christ's death andmlnl.tratlon . " - Ibid., p. 358.

Elijah's work isto restore a system of true worship.

"Elijah:' another prophet "like"Moses, teaches the same com-mandments, statutes and judg-ments for modern Israel. Likewise inour day, on New Mt. Carmel, we arein the time of the purification of theChurch, the Investigative Judgmentof the Living; therefore, we are com-manded to observe the "Daily,"morning and evening sacrifice.

"Your obeying 'all the command-ments, and the statutes, and thejudgments' of the moral law ofMoses, you see, is your evidence

that you have been born again, thatyou have been endowed with powerfrom above, that you are enabled tochoose the good and to refuse theevil, that you are the children ofGod. Keeping the commandmentsand the statutes in the Lord, then, isthe light and shield of your life. It isthe outward sign that by the life ofChrist you have overcome (Rev. 3:12; 2:17) the Enemy of your soul andbody.
