Help to plan afternoons and evenings by allocating time-slots for extra-murals, extra lessons, homework, summarising etc. Check - in a supportive way - what is working and what isn’t. Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners

Recently, I overheard someone saying that the definition of a ‘parent’ is the person who is responsible for making you do things because you don’t feel like it. I also heard that the definition of an ‘adult’ is when you have to parent yourself. We need to remember that high school children are not adults yet. With this in mind, here are a few tips that will help you to help your high school child:

Make sure you have the D6 School Communicator on your phone. All the resources you need are posted on it.

Your child must have and use a diary. Print out a few copies of the timetable. Your child can fill in homework that needs to be done in the lesson block. The whole cycle will appear on one page and the term over a few pages. Get your child to fill in the cycle test dates and project deadlines and highlight them.

Help to plan afternoons and evenings by allocating time-slots for extra-murals, extra lessons, homework, summarising etc. Check - in a supportive way - what is working and what isn’t.

Take away the cell phone until all the work has been done for the day.

Judge less, encourage more.

Communicate what is going on at home with the Grade Tutors. Too often we only get the news once your child is already in crisis. Knowledge is power. When we work together, it benefits your child; we are here to help you and vice versa.

Be more selective about your own expressions of negativity. If you moan about the state of the country all the time, your child will be full of fear for the future. Try to point out how instability can lead to creativity. Entrepreneurs are born out of hope, not fear.

Deal with it. Whatever ‘it’ is. Be the person you are demanding your child to be.

Try to teach your child a new skill every week. Some examples include: how to compile a shopping list; how to iron a shirt; how to change a tyre; or how to cook a meal. Pick something you do on auto-pilot and teach them how to do it.

Meet for coffee in the lounge. Plant some flowers in a pot. Take the dog for a walk. Share a problem and ask them what they would do to solve it.

You may not feel like it but it will make a huge difference. Try it!

Yours sincerely MRS L PALMER HOD: HISTORY & GRADE TUTOR

Helping people in crisis

Above, left to right: Peter Stoicu (8E); Alta McMaster; Thendo Mudau (RCL President) and Zoe Chishimba (8E)

Last Friday, members of the RCL proudly presented a range of toys, toiletries, personal hygiene items, food and clothing to Alta McMaster, CEO of the Epic Foundation. These items were collected and donated by the learners at Rand Park High School. The Epic Foundation does amazing work to support survivors of rape and abuse in South Africa. The items will be used to make Comfort Packs which are given to men, women and children who arrive at Shelters for counselling and support. Often these victims arrive with nothing. The packs are also given to rape victims who arrive at Police Stations so that they have the opportunity to clean and freshen up after the reporting and testing process has concluded. Thank you for your support!
