The Medicare class would love to congratulate Dr.

Carly Ranson for completing her fellowship, and

becoming a faculty member at UOP in the fall of

2017! Her dedication to our Medicare Part D class/

outreach program and the beneficiaries we serve

demonstrates her passion to help the community, and

her desire to mentor pharmacy students. Let’s trace

her roots to this point…

Dr. Ranson herself took the Medicare elective as a

student in 2011. The impact and importance of that

experience ultimately helped her find her purpose in

pharmacy school and left an imprint on her life. After

her Medicare class experience, she felt it was her

duty to help ensure that our Medicare program

remained successful, so that it could continue to

impact the lives of future generations of students just

like it did her.

In-depth look at a new Faculty member:

Ranson

Dr. Carly

By: Trisha Macaraeg

After graduating from UOP, Dr. Ranson

worked as a hospital pharmacist wanting

to regain the trust that nurses and

doctors had in pharmacists. She had the

opportunity to teach nurses about several

pharmacy-related topics. Through this

experience, she found her love for

teaching and ultimately her desire to

pursue a fellowship. After a few years of

practicing as a pharmacist she came back

to UOP to pursue her MS/Fellowship

which she completed last year. Now, as a

faculty member, she is “really looking

forward to annoying Patel on a daily

basis” (but then again, who isn’t?). But,

she is also looking to get more involved in

the Medicare class, as she sees so much

potential for the Medicare class to

expand.

The 2017 Medicare class had the

privilege of not only working with Dr.

Ranson, but also getting to know her on a

personal level as well. What we know

very well is her love for annoying Dr.

Patel, something that we can all be proud

of. When a student herself, she won the

Medi award as the student who would

“Most likely to be the reason Dr. Patel

quits teaching the Medicare class.”

We are all very honored to work with

someone as passionate and hardworking

as Dr. Ranson. We know that she will not

only guide us through the Medicare Part

D program, but also will challenge us to

become the best future pharmacists. Dr.

Ranson has been such a great mentor to

all of us and we are glad that future

generations of students will be able to

learn from, and work with, her.

Wish you much success on this professional chapter of your life Dr. Ranson!!

Last fall, our Medicare program had its first ever event in the city of Ripon. The

event was in collaboration with Bethany Home, a retirement community that

first opened its doors in 1963. What started off as a 74-bed convalescent

hospital, now houses over 400 residents. The community offers different levels

of care such as skilled nursing, assisted living, in-home care, memory care,

and independent living.

The making of this event has an interesting story. A few years ago the

Executive Director (Cindy Scheublein) of Bethany Home was attending a

presentation Dr. Patel was giving on “Updates to the Medicare Benefit” at a

local church in Stockton. After the presentation Cindy spoke with Dr. Patel

about her sincere interest in having our Medicare program come to Bethany

Home as a host site. The two kept in touch and when the opportunity

presented itself Dr. Patel let Cindy know that “we are in!”

The outreach event took place on Tuesday, November 14th from 1-6pm at the Bethany Home Town Square campus. Through successful advertising, engaged residents, and an incredible partner in Bethany Home, we had every single one of our Part D appointment slots booked weeks ahead of the event. Eighty-two seniors were served at the event that was open to both Bethany Home residents, and the community at large. We were all very proud of our efforts and even more so when we heard from the Executive Director of Bethany Home, Cindy Scheublein, the next day. Cindy wrote, “Yesterday’s event was perhaps the most organized and flawless event I have ever witnessed! The [Bethany Home’s] campus leaders and staff were very impressed with the professionalism and kindness of your students/staff. You most certainly exceeded our expectations”.

We were also touched with the many kind words of gratitude and hand-written notes we received from the beneficiaries and staff at Bethany Home. Because of the robust turnout and high demand for our services, the leadership of Bethany Home thought it might make sense to move our 2018 event to a weekend day….and we agreed! As such, our 2018 Medicare event at Bethany Home will be on Saturday, November 3rd and will be two hours longer in duration than the 2017 event. We hope this translates to dozens more seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries being served. We are looking forward to the event again this year!

A Social Event

Over the past few years the Medicare class has

had social activities for students, faculty, and

staff to get know each other, bond and have some

fun outside of the classroom setting. Our last two

social activities for the 2017 Medicare class were

unlike any of the previous events.

The class hosted its first-ever Paint Nite on

September 28th. We began Paint Nite as we

seemingly do all our events...gathering our food

and filling our stomachs. This time we were

delivered delicious Vietnamese sandwiches. We

even had dessert (delectable cakes) courtesy of

Caitlin Tipple. She surprised Dr. Patel with a cake

she made herself of a grumpy cat (second only to

coconut in terms of way to “endear” yourself to

him). Once we finished indulging ourselves, we

were ready to start painting.

Faculty and Medicare students joined in on the

painting fun as we attempted to recreate an

Autumn path among trees. Artistic talents

began to show through in people’s artwork and

the canvas’ came to life through the variety of

colors and smooth brush strokes. Partway

through the evening instructor Candice

stepped up the entertainment with a dance-off

between Dr. Patel and student Olivia Page. It

was quite the site to see. They were both great

sports and had awesome dance moves to boot.

Laughter filled the room and continued

through the night. It was the perfect last social

event before the “controlled chaos” of our

Medicare outreach season.

BABY SHOWER By: Summer Faria

As many are aware, a few days prior to the

start of Medicare season Dr. Patel announced that

he and his wife, Dr. Annie Patel, brought home their

beautiful baby girl, Raya Sarine. To properly celebrate, we

decided that our final social should be a surprise baby shower for

the Patel family. There were baby shower games, a photo booth,

presents, and a LOT of food. The entire room was decorated for the event.

Only a few weeks old at the time, Raya (and her mom) even made an

appearance! The most heartwarming moment of the day was when Dr. Patel

expressed his appreciation and love for Annie, how supportive she was as a wife, and how

he knew she would be an exceptional mother to Raya. Dr. Patel and the faculty also spoke of

their gratitude for a just completed successful season and appreciation to all involved. The

shower was joyful, but there was also an overcast of sorrow that filled the room for many of

us knowing that the class had ended. We have been very lucky to have had the Medicare

experience and have grown throughout the year. We are grateful to all of those that helped

us through this journey; Dr. Cheung, Dr. Ranson, Dr. Rogan, Dr. Valle-Oseguera, Dr. Woelfel,

Linda, and all the pharmacist preceptors and volunteers. We want to extend a very special

thank you to Dr. Patel for all that he did for us throughout the year, for always supporting us,

and challenging each one of us to greater heights while serving the community.

Experience Interprofessional

For the past several years, pharmacy students in the Medicare class have worked side-by-side with students from University of San Francisco’s Nurse Practitioner (NP) program at Medicare events. This past year, Medicare students had expanded opportunities for interprofessional collaboration as students from Pacific’s Physician Assistant (PA) program attended our events and worked closely with Medicare students as well.

Prior to the outreach events, students from both the NP and PA programs came to Stockton for a combined class with Medicare students. Students from each of the programs learned about the educational training of each program, common practice settings, and potential opportunities for interprofessional collaboration. Moreover, the crux of the joint classes was to allow students from the different programs to work on simulated patient cases, in which both Medicare Part D and medication therapy management (MTM) services were provided. The joint class activities mimicked a real-world beneficiary intervention that students were likely to see at an event. In addition to learning from their counterparts, Medicare students instructed PA and NP students on how to evaluate prescription drug plans under the Part D benefit, create a personalized medication record, provide comprehensive MTM services, and initiate a prescriber communication form.

Overall, the classroom training provided an excellent opportunity for students to gain insight into the perspectives of providers from different healthcare disciplines, while also preparing s tud ents f or i n ter d is c ip l i nar y collaboration in real-world situations.

Fast forward to the fall where NP and PA students would sit with a pair of Medicare students, and help conduct Part D and MTM interventions. As we worked together to educate beneficiaries about their health, disease states and prescription medications, students from the different programs started to get a better understanding of the contributions different healthcare professionals could make to patient care. Pharmacy students were able to help beneficiaries with their Part D plan and provide a comprehensive review of their medications, while NP and PA students educated about disease states and healthy lifestyles. Not only did we learn about each other’s role in patient care, but we were able to combine our areas of expertise to ensure that beneficiaries got the most out of each intervention.

Learning how to communicate and interact with other healthcare professionals and knowing the role each provider plays is essential in delivering the highest quality of care to patients. Ultimately, we will carry the lessons, skills, and knowledge we gained through these interprofessional experiences into our future careers.

“ I t w as an ins ig ht f u l experience working with the NP students during Medicare. They were a helpful addition to the beneficiary interventions as they aided us with MTM. Pharmacy students and NP students learned a lot from one another, and we both got to understand a little bit more about the other’s profession.” – Michelle Chinn

Student’s Interprofessional Experience

“It was great to work with students from other health care professions, and get a chance to look at patient care from a different perspective.” – Kevin Chan

"Working with other healthcare professionals at our Medicare events proved to be extremely a d v a n t a g e o u s t o t h e beneficiaries. We were able to address their different concerns in one convenient location without the time constraints they would normally experience in a pharmacy or at a doctor’s office." – Caitlin Tipple

" M y i n t e r p r o f e s s i o n a l collaboration with NP and PA students proved to be an invaluable experience. We learned about each other's roles in depth, and ultimately realized that optimal patient care is achieved through collective efforts of the medical team." – Henry Kim

Three generations of Medicare students gathered

on the evening of May 17, 2018 for the 8th Annual

Medicare Roast n’ Toast. Attendees, dressed in the

evening’s “Black and White” theme crowded into

the newly renovated second floor of the PHS

building...hungry, but eager to socialize. Third

year students reunited, excited to talk about their

experiences during their time away, while first

and second year students laughed about previous

winners of the ‘Medi’ awards, and were especially

curious about who “Benny” was.

Starving students lined up for spring rolls, egg

rolls, chow mein, several meat dishes, and fried

rice catered from Saigon Bay to support the

family business of Hong Van, a graduating

Medicare student. Guests were also treated to an

appearance by Dr. Patel’s 7-month old daughter

Raya, making even the toughest souls swoon

when she smiled and even more when she

whimpered. Attendees were able to satisfy their

sweet tooth with Black & White cookies and/or

root beer floats (a favorite that night, especially

for Raya who repeatedly grabbed Dr. Patel’s cup

hoping for a taste herself).

After dinner and socializing, Dr. Ranson finally

gathered the crowd for the main event, the

ROAST! A long line (the most ever!) of graduating

Medicare students took center stage to begin

roasting Dr. Patel. First up were Emily Highsmith

and Bianca Khishaveh who shared Snapchat clips

of Dr. Patel using filters that made him look a little

more ‘pleasing’ to the eyes…as if that is really

even possible. Sam Agbonkpolo was up next with

his thoughtful comparison of Santa and his elves

to Dr. Patel and the Medicare class. Michaela and

Milana Vachuska shared a story of Dr. Patel’s

April Fool’s Prank that backfired and in which he

became the butt of the joke, Raechel Farewell and

Jessa May Culilap shared some snarky comments

about Dr. Patel, and David Chayka talked about

some of Dr. Patel’s many quirks before sharing

moments in time where Dr. Patel supported him

mentally and financially through his many

projects; these moments inspired David to create

the meaningful, handcrafted gift (a 3-D printed

picture cube that lights up) that he gave to Dr.

Patel.

By: Irene Li

Click here to go to cover page

Roasters connected with the audience as they

pointed out Patel’s high expectations, their fear of

his signature “look of disappointment”, his emails

that cry out for help, and his extreme level of

sarcasm.

Before the night ended, Dr. Patel (being the

“Santa” he is) recognized the graduating Medicare

students with gifts, thanking them for their

dedication and hard work throughout their time

in the Medicare program. Many also took

advantage of the “Photo Booth” to capture

memories that will last a lifetime. This year’s

Roast n’ Toast would not have been possible

without the help of members from the 2017

Medicare Class which included: Caitlin Tipple,

Summer Faria, Jessica Ruzich, Amanda Tam,

China Spencer, Patricia Tam, and Emily Fok, who

helped plan every detail of the evening’s

festivities. First year Medicare students got a

glimpse of the wild ride (known as Medicare)

they are in for, while students from last year’s

Medicare class salivate at the prospect for their

turn at next year’s Roast n’ Toast.
