Chapter General Meeting and Keying Club

Introducing Bryophytes - the other land plants

Monday, March 13General Meeting: 7:30 pm

Keying Club: 5:00 pm

UCSC Arboretum Horticulture Building

Speaker: Ken Kellman

Bryophytes (mosses, liverworts, and hornworts) represent a completely different solution to the evolutionary problem of living on land. They lack the complex vascular system that has made the “taller plants” so successful, but they have evolved complex solutions that will surprise you.

Ken will show us how to recognize this important group of plants with a short presentation, and then we spend the rest of the evening looking closely at many common bryophytes from the central coast.

He has published, A Catalog of the Mosses of Santa Cruz County, and is now collecting for a similar project in Monterey and San Mateo counties.

If you have a dissection microscope, please bring it to the Keying Club at 5:00 pm where Ken will help us identify Mosses, Liverworts and Hornworts. If you don’t have one, there will be extras at the meeting to share. 1

Musings on the UCSC Arboretum: What’s Next?

5:00 pm Keying Club for plants and mushrooms—bring specimens to identify!

After six months as Executive Director of the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum, Martin Quigley is still discovering the rich history and collections gathered over the last Þfty years.

With an increasing focus on California natives, Martin envisions a renaissance of the Arboretum’s global reputation as a garden unique for its collections of endangered California native plants combined with a world renowned array of Southern Hemisphere trees from the other Mediterranean climate zones. The Arboretum grows the largest group of Australian trees outside Australia itself. Its mission is scientiÞc, horticultural, and deeply humanistic.

Join us this evening with Martin as he presents his personal musings on the future endeavors of the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum.

Habitat Restoration TeamWe are a volunteer group working to restore native habitat in the parks and protected lands in Santa Cruz County. Our program provides an opportunity for people to learn about the natural systems that surround them while helping to restore special and wild places. No prior work experience is necessary, just show up at the park. We welcome individual volunteers from 8 to 80 years, as well as special groups. Wear comfortable layered clothing, bring something to drink, and lots of enthusiasm! We work rain or shine, but if things get particularly unpleasant, we call it a day.Tools are provided, but please bring your own gloves.

Follow up what you learned from Monday’s CNPS meeting with a day wandering around on hands and knees looking at the terrestrial mosses, liverworts, and hornworts that cover the dirt along the trails of the Arboretum. Bring your hand lens and wear clothes you are willing to get dirty! Bring water and lunch. Heavy rain cancels. Carpooling to the Arboretum is encouraged, but not organized by CNPS.

Contact: Ken Kellman at [email protected] with any questions.

Sunday April 99:30 am - 12:30 pmFranklin Point State Park

Join Deanna for a hike along the unique coastal terrace and scenic bluffs. This is some of the most intact coastal prairie we have in our area. A few rare species that we will hopefully see are Fritillaria agrestis, Hosackia gracilis, and Plagiobothrys diffuses among native bunchgrasses and forbs. The hike is easy and will be about 5 miles. Bring layers (it can get windy), snacks, and water.

Meet at 9:30 am on the west side of Highway 1 at the large dirt parking lot across the street from the Costanoan sign, about 2 miles south of the Pigeon Point Lighthouse.

SelectingtheFutureofRedwoodsA Talk by Luen Miller

Luen Miller will talk about the close and distant past, the pres-ent and future of his favorite tree, the coast redwood. Luen's involvement in the two recent Highway 1 merge-lane plantings reopened a latent obsession that has grown to take over much of his life. Luen will discuss new diseases, propagation and

production tips for your own personal obsessions and the ap-plication of "domestication selection" for fast, efficient screen-ing and introduction of new varieties, native or otherwise.

Luen is a lifetime member of CNPS, and attended UCSC as a biology major focusing on the genetics and population biol-ogy of invertebrates. Captivated by plants from childhood, he was checking Munz's flora out from his local library in grade school. He has since worked at various jobs in the plant industry for close to forty years. Luen is currently half-owner of Monterey Bay Nursery, a medium-size wholesale container nursery in north Monterey County.

Free plant for all attendees! (Luen knows the secret to drawing a crowd!) •

FieldTriptoButanoforCalypsoOrchidDeanna Giulianno`

Our field trip to Butano on March 28 was an interest-

ing hunt. Thirteen enthusias-tic people showed up hoping to glimpse the beauty of this

special orchid. On Jackson Flat where we usually find at least twenty individuals none were to be found. A few of us had seen them on the Año Nuevo trail. So we decided to extend the miles in search of the orchid. We were rewarded for our efforts, climbing up the steep fire road to the Año Nuevo trail. Only 4 Calypso bulbosa orchids were found, probably due to a warm, low precipitation year. •
