characters or protagonist of the novel. She is a high-spirited
20-year-old girl from a tiny village in Pulau Langkawi. Currently,
she is pursuing her studies in London, England. She is happy to be
away from home, as she could not
get along with her father and the conservative community that
she lives in. She returns home to mourn the loss of her sister,
Madhuri who has suddenly passed away. Azreen is mature for her age,
and she courageously solvs the mystery behind the death of
Madhuri.
MADHURIAzreens elder sister. A pretty, charming, and obedient
daughter who was well liked by everyone. Religious and
conservative, she caught the eye of the village headman, Haji
Ghani. She became his second wife.
PUAN NORMALA
The village gossip who spreads the rumour that Madhuri was
murdered. She claims that Madhuri death left the village
cursed.
She incites Asraf and the villagers that the old lady is the
cause of Neks death and leads a mob to the old ladys house. She is
a poor and bad example to her daughter, Noor who as picked up her
habits on spreading malicious gossip. Siti described her as a slimy
cobra with a three-forked tongue. Asraf reffered to her as that
snake of a woman and that her words cannot be trusted.
MOHD ASRAF
The handsome and dedicated school teacher in the village. He is
two years older than Azreen and is caring filial grandson, who
takes good care of his grandmother, Nek. He was Madhuris secret
lover and they had both planned to elope to Kuala Lumpur.
