Be your own skin cancer detective and look for these CLUES
C – Changing (a mole that
is changing in appearance) L – Lonely (a mole that is
the only mole, or own that stands out, in a wide area)
U – Unique (a mole that
looks different to all the others)
E – Emerging (a new mole,
most melanomas arise this way)
S – Sore (a sore, itchy,
scaly, bleeding or tender that doesn’t heal )
If a mole or spot has two or more of the above features you should have the mole or spot checked by a doctor. The more features a spot has the more concerning it may be. You should check your own, and/or your partner’s skin monthly. Most people have made all their moles by the time they are 40. New moles after this age are more suspicious, and the older you are the more significant a new mole is. There are many other types of spots that may arise which may be quite innocent, but you should have these checked by a doctor anyway.
Melanomas are not necessarily brown or black, they can (rarely) be
pink, especially in fair skinned people.

Culverden Volunteer Fire Brigade Newsletter Well summer has finally arrived with a fair few hot days, and with this comes the old warning about the fire risk that is rising. Remember to keep long dry grass cut especially if it is against your boundary fence. This could lessen the chance of a fire catching hold and spreading to your place. While we’re on the subject of fires, a scary thought is that the response time to turn a fire engine out in Culverden area is getting longer. WHY? We only have 11 operational firemen and 2 operational support members, of these 13 members of the Culverden Fire Brigade, 7 live in the township. Of those 7, 6 have their work which takes them out of the area most days. 4 of our fire fighters live north of the red post. And 2 of our members are operational support, and also live outside of Culverden. So what you say? Well in the event of a major fire happening then the chance of your house, school, business or property being saved is dramatically reduced. What can you do? It is during the day that we need members to cover the township, as I have put in previous letters you don’t need to be a big, burly strapping bloke. Ladies you can solve problems with brains instead of brawn, and more often than not this is the easiest way to achieve something. And with the team behind you and your training then this is very achievable. So the main message in all of this is that YOU as a member of our community could be the person who can do something to help. Culverden Volunteer Fire Brigade is our community’s fire brigade. Either by becoming a volunteer firefighter or even being able to help out behind the scene, then you can be part of a New Zealand wide organisation which offers, you the chance to learn new skills and at the same time helping your community. For more information then please contact Euan Lawson 03 315 6160 or 0275156160, Craig Ritchie 03 315 8404 or 0274705388.
