What I did on my autumn vacation…….

Dear Friends,

Those days of writing compositions on what I did on my summer vacation are but a distant, fading memory….or so I

thought! But when folks began asking me about my recent time off, I found myself reflecting on the two weeks I was

absent from Christ Church and what I did (and learned) during that time.

First, let me say that on paper none of it looks too exciting. My immediate concern was getting my annual batch of

Kahlua started in time for our Holiday Bazaar (it takes a month to come into its own), so that was the first item on

my vacation list. Next I tackled the tedious process of swapping out my summer wardrobe for my winter one; I am

now officially ready for fall. It also turned out to be the perfect time to get all three of the cars at my house, one by

one, over to Burdges Garage for various repairs. I spent a day helping Jeff clean out a room full of his parents’

discarded belongings (they have recently downsized) and spackled, sanded, and painted two of the upstairs

bedrooms at the rectory.

There were some fun things, too, like spending time at the beach catching up on my reading and having lunch with

friends. I was delighted to have time to run or swim almost every single day. I even made my first ever goulash

(thank you, Mimi, for the wonderful recipe!).

A little “church work” got done, too. I readied this year’s Calendar Cash Out Game (in fact the first stickers went up

on it after the vestry meeting on Monday) and I have started putting together various baskets for the Holiday Bazaar

– all the kind of things that I never quite seem to have time to do in a “normal” week.

But perhaps the most refreshing time for me was the time I spent in church. One Sunday was spent at a lovely little

Episcopal church in downtown Bethlehem, just a few blocks from where Jeff’s middle son is now living. I heard a

most marvelous sermon there on that story from Luke about the ten lepers. And the importance of gratitude (have

you ever noticed that in the story, all ten lepers were healed of their disease, but only the one who went back to show

gratitude was made whole?) I realized just how good God is! How nice it is to simply sit back and listen to a fresh

voice, in a setting so different from the one in which I am so familiar.

The second Sunday I spent in a church in Greensboro, North Carolina, where I visited the Sanecki family, whom

many of you know from their days as members here at Christ Church (and btw: they send their fond greetings to you

all). I was treated to a service filled with beautiful music and another good sermon. This one reflected on the stress

and challenges of this particularly contentious presidential contest (with NC being a state that is up for grabs, the

politicking is even more blatant – and offensive – than in our beloved state of New Jersey). The rector issued a

wonderful call for Christians to stand in the fray and to recognize the important role we have of holding on to the

deeper values to which our Faith claims. It was filled with hope, and made me so proud to be a member of the

Episcopal Church.

Did I mention it? Lynda and Doug picked me up at the airport on a Saturday afternoon just as their Parish’s Annual

Bazaar had ended. At the Coffee Hour that Sunday morning, I could hardly wait to get to the “Mini Bazaar” (as they

call their day after) to glean some ideas I might bring home to Christ Church. I was not disappointed, and will be

excited to share some of them with our own committee for next year.

After a Sanecki family birthday celebration, a night at a choral concert, and a tour through Greensboro, I was back

on an airplane and headed for home. Just in time for that beautiful 85 degree day (spent at the beach reading a book)

before entering back into the rough and tumble of parish life.

I am not sure exactly what one should do on their vacation, but I found I had a marvelous two weeks of catching up

on all kinds of things around the house, catching up with old friends, and catching a renewed outlook on my own

Christian Faith.

What else could one possibly ask? Nothing more than to be home where I belong, with this parish which has become

such a dear part of my life. May we never fail to notice and express our profound gratitude for all the marvelous

works God does for us and through us.

Peace, Mother Lisa+

Join us for ALL SAINTS’ – ALL SOULS’

The Holy Triad is Coming

What, you may ask, is the Holy Triad? It is All Hallows

Eve (Halloween), All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. All

three are connected, exploring different aspects of that

shadowy place between the living, the dead, and

resurrection. This year at Christ Church we are shaking

things up a bit! So please note the following schedule of

events:

All Saints Sunday: Sunday, October 30th. The

traditional Eucharist at 8:00am and 10:00am in

which we celebrate the “Communion of Saints”

from every age and century.

All Hallows Eve (Halloween): Sunday, October

30th: We are hosting a Family Halloween Party at

4pm in the Parish House. Included will be a

Costume Parade, delicious supper and snacks,

pumpkin painting, and other fun (and slightly

spooky) activities.

All Souls Day: Wednesday, November 2nd at

7:30pm. One of our most moving services of the

year, we particularly name and honor those whom

we have known and loved who have passed away.

Come join with us in these worship and fellowship

opportunities. They are wonderful time to invite

friends and family to join as well.

2ND SATURDAY WORKDAY Second Saturday Workday will NOT be held in

November so that everyone can lend a hand at the

Holiday Bazaar! As in the past, December and

January we take a break. We will not officially

meet again until February. That doesn’t mean there

aren’t things that need to be done. Please call the

office if you would like to volunteer a few hours

during the week. There are always small projects

that need to be tended to.

Seeing is believing: Experiences of the Holy for Parent and Child

On the second Sunday of every month, parents are

invited to join their children in the Parish House for

a special session to explore and develop the

spirituality of their children. Family members

work together on activities that broaden their

understanding of God and the Community of Faith.

Parents learn ways to address matters of Faith with

their children at home, sharing and exploring their

own traditions.

“Seeing is Believing” 2016 – 2017

I Am what I Am – and

That’s All that I Am!

This year parents and children are discovering who

Jesus really is – by his own words and his own

descriptions of himself. We are exploring all the

great “I Am” statements of John’s gospel, and who

knows? Maybe by discovering who Jesus is, we

may come to know ourselves better, too!

Join us on November 13th at 10 a.m. in the

Parish House for: I AM….The Gate (John 15)

Have you heard about “the narrow door”? What

does that mean? Are you ready to journey

through the “Christ Gate?”

For more information, contact Julie Cassidy by

or phone the parish office: 732-741-2220.

Sunday morning Adult Bible Study

“Talking About Faith and Scripture”

Sundays at 9AM Parish House Library

Join us on Sunday morning for a free and open

conversation about faith and the readings for the

week. The lively discussion in the library will be

led by Deacon Bill Balmer and everyone is

welcome. Join in any time!

The December “Those Who Serve Schedule” is

currently being prepared. Please inform the office

of any dates you ARE NOT available for (out of

town for Christmas) AND/OR any requests for the

Christmas service you plan to attend/serve at.

ONLY DAYS AWAY…… LAST MINUTE BZAZAAR NEWS The Christ Church Holiday Bazaar Team is hard at

work preparing for the November 12th Event. Please

offer assistance and support wherever you can.

Bazaar Auction Baskets will be accepted through

Fri., Nov. 4 We know you have been meaning to send us

something, so we are giving you a few extra days.

Please help us again this year by donating at least

one Auction Basket per family. A tray, basket,

bowl, crate or any container filled with items would

be wonderful! Baskets will be used at Preview

Night on Nov. 9th and at the Bazaar on November

12th. Please put a list with your donation of items

in the basket and the value (not what you spent) so

we can label them properly. REMEMBER to

ask your favorite vendors and merchants for

donations, too!! There is a list of suggestions in

the Parish House--please take one or use your

special talents and ideas to put one together. We

will wrap, ribbon, and arrange them all but hope

you can put your items in a container--it is easier for

us. Thank you for your generosity, love, and

dedication to Christ Church. We need you all!!

Please call me at 732-922-8998 or e-mail me at

drweb01@ Comcast.net with any questions or

concerns. Please bring your donation to the Parish

House during office hours Tue-Fri 9am-2pm.

Thank you, Cindy Webster

BAZAAR DECORATING Sunday, November 6

th. Got Lanterns? Electric or

battery candles? Fall or Christmas Garlands you are

looking to get rid of but feel bad tossing out? How

about a fake cardboard fireplace or a chimney? Sue

Nap would gladly take them off your hands and put

them to good use for the Bazaar Decorations. You

can drop them off at Sue’s desk in the Church

School starting now. Mark your calendar for the

BDD (bazaar decorating date) which will be

Sunday, November 6 immediately following

coffee hour. Looking for volunteers to push pin,

staple, scotch tape and hang on that date. It’s

always fun time of fellowship and service for young

and old alike. Just what you need to get your

Holiday Spirit going!

BAKE SHOPPE Nothing at the Bazaar looks as DELICIOUS as the

Bake Shoppe! That's because of all the pies, cakes,

cookies and special "goodies" YOU make! If

you've contributed before, thank you so much and

we're counting on you again. If you haven't... this is

the year to start. A sign-up sheet is located in the

parish house. You can drop off your goodies all

day Friday, November 11th (after 9 AM) or

Saturday, November 12 before the Bazaar opens at

9. Please label your items clearly (a spice cake and

applesauce cake look so similar) and please note on

the labels if you there are nuts in them. You can

leave the packaging to us or you can bring them

wrapped and ready to go – up to you!

We are also in need of folks to help in the Bake

Shoppe on the day of the bazaar! One hour or all

day….any amount of time helps. Sign- up sheet in

the parish house.

Please see or call Noel Murgio if you have any

questions732-842-4487. Thank you in advance for

all your help.

Trinkets & Treasure time

It is time again to bring in your Trinkets &

Treasures – all those lightly used things just

collecting dust, but can become an important part of

this year's Holiday bazaar. Besides our normal

adult section, again this year we will also include a

Kid's Corner were the children can purchase things

that are suitable to wrap up and share as gifts with

their friends and family. If you have any questions

speak with Walter Dein.

Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe Collectables, Curios, and Keepsakes. Every year we

receive a few items that are simply too nice to go

downstairs into the Trinkets and Treasures, but not

quite “new” enough to go into one of the Auction

Baskets. So we have created a venue for a kind of

“upgrade” to our downstairs market. Tables in the

main room will be set aside for all your wonderful

old antiques, keepsakes, brick-a-brack, curios and

curiosities that you have lurking in your attics and

basements. So take a look around; your beloved

treasures may find a new home to call their own!

We welcome your contributions.

Christ Church Super 50/50 Cash Raffle - Fund Raiser To Benefit Christ Church

Operating Fund November - December, 2016

Christ Church is running a Super 50/50 cash raffle

to benefit the Christ Church Operating Budget. This

is a major fund raiser to help us generate additional

funds needed for the Christ Church operating

expenses. This year, it was decided to hold only one

Super 50/50 at the end of the year. We hope to sell

all of the tickets which would net Christ Church

$3,125 if we sell all of the tickets. Let’s plan to

meet that goal!

How does the Super 50/50 Cash Raffle work?

Tickets are sold for $5.00 each between October 30

and December 4, 2016, when the drawing will be

held in the parish house at 12 noon. The winner will

receive 50% of the total money collected from

ticket sales. Christ Church will receive the other

50% of the ticket sales.

On Sunday, Oct 30th

we expect to have the tickets

available for distribution and on sale. Sue

Napoletano is co coordinating this fundraiser so

please contact her with any questions. You can be

sure she’ll have an envelope with your name on it.

Moravian Chicken Pies for Sale

Pies are ready for pick up and orders are still being

taken. Only $12.00 each.

INGATHERING SUNDAY SAVE THE DATE!

Sunday, November 20th

- 10am

Investing in our Community

Our pledge campaign for 2017 is beginning! This

initiative, which is part of the overall stewardship of

our parish’s finances, asks each parishioner to make

a monetary pledge. The amount of such an annual

pledge is, of course, up to the parishioner but tithing

or moving toward tithing is the goal.

Just like in your home, the church has a budget to

follow. Our church treasurer uses our pledge dollars

to prepare our budget. Your pledge is used to pay

our bills - oil, electric, water, phones, snow

removal, grass mowing, maintenance on 3

buildings, salaries, office expenses, diocese

assessment PLUS all our programs!

Over the next few weeks during the service,

parishioners will give testimonials on what the

community of Christ Church means to them and

their families.

Your invitation to a complementary luncheon on

November 20th

, our ingathering Sunday will arrive

soon. Please mark this date on your calendar. There

will be only one service that day at 10:00 and lunch

will follow. This is the center point of our pledge

campaign when we will come together as a

community.

We urge you to attend this luncheon and prayerfully

consider your pledge for 2017.

the Christ Church Parish House. Please arrive early

SDRG PROJECT STATUS REPORT

October 27, 2016

1. JBC Inc., the contractor for the gravemarker restoration work, will complete the restoration work on the

14 gravemarkers in the first week of November. Please take a look at their work. The gravemarkers

restored are noted with a black plastic peg nearby. Two of the most interesting ones are ones that were

returned to lie in horizontal beds. These are Zilpha Halstead near the junction of the parking lot and the

brick walkway and Christina Hageman, a two year old, adjacent to the brick walkway where it turns

toward the front of the church.

2. The bids for work on the Church building and Rectory have been received from 3 bidders Choices will

be made in about two weeks.

3. We received approval from the Borough for the SDRG construction work in the form of Certificates of

Appropriateness (COAs).

4. A request for a progress payment for the church grant has been made for about $54,000.

Did You Know? Stories of Christ Church History

by: Robert M. Kelly, Jr.

Parish Historian

“Did You Know …?” about the Halsteads prominent role in the life of the church in the 18

th century before the Revolution? This topic

was triggered by last month’s article about the gravemarker of Zilpha (West) Halstead that was being restored

and we believed was likely to have been moved to make room for the church built in 1769. (That work is now

complete and here is how she looks now after the makeover.)

But that stoked interest in the Halsteads in general who were a prominent church family in the 18th

century.

Here are some facts.

Per the Parish Register there are 24 Baptisms, 5 Marriages, and 8 Burials of Halsteads. These figures seem a

little out of proportion with each other, but a partial explanation is that 5 of the Baptisms occurred on Christmas

Day 1738. These were all adults. This suggests either conversions to Anglicanism or when the Halsteads arrived

in Shrewsbury.

From a genealogical tree perspective, these Halsteads descended from Timothy and Margery who came to

Shrewsbury from Long Island. Margery died in 1748 and Timothy married Zilpha. Margery is interred in the

graveyard. Timothy’s children included Josiah, Abigail, Timothy and Daniel. Josiah (1730-1775) was the most

prominent of the Halsteads both in Shrewsbury and at Christ Church. Josiah was married to Zilpha West, whose

gravemarker is shown above

Page 12: THE CROWN - Episcopalchristchurchshrewsbury.org/wp-content/uploads/...16... · 10/11/2016  · most marvelous sermon there on that story from Luke about the ten lepers. And the importance

12

Josiah served as a warden for Christ Church in 1747 up to the time of his death. He resided on the west side of

Broad Street heading North from Christ Church to Red Bank. Josiah was a carpenter, like his father and an inn-

keeper in Shrewsbury Township owning a very large tavern inn where meetings were held by the vestry to

discuss various topics. He served on the committees to raise money for the repair of the Glebe farm at Tinton

Falls in 1752, as well as for the lotteries to fund the rebuilding of Christ Church. The new building construction

began on January 27, 1769.

Josiah was appointed as overseer of the construction and was paid 5 shillings a day. In 1770 he was granted

permission to build a work shop at the Northeast corner of the churchyard. In 1774, as the American Revolution

was taking form, Josiah's Tavern became a focal meeting place by local patriots to discuss important matters of

the

day. On February 2, 1774, he signed a petition opposing slave manumission. Unfortunately, Josiah would not

live to see the outcome of these meetings held at his tavern or the Independence gained from England in the

coming years.

Josiah was buried in the graveyard and while his gravestone does not survive, we believe it was near his wife

Zilpha. Josiah subsequently married Anna Throckmorton and Lydia Worthley.

The second most prominent Halstead was Josiah’s son, Daniel. Daniel also served on the Vestry and was a

signatory with his father on the Builder’s agreement for the new church. Daniel was the lead carpenter.

Below is a segment of the graveyard map that shows the location of the burial plots of the Halsteads. Josiah’s

stone does not survive but we believe it is near his first wife Zilpha. Timothy, Mary and Mirtilla were all

Josiah’s children who died at the ages of one, one, and 16 respectively.

As we learn more about the Halsteads, we find mysteries (why is Daniel not buried here?). and identify more

areas of study to gain insight into life at Christ Church in the 18th

century through the lives of those tied to the

church.

This article used previous research by Trevor Kirkpatrick, Amanda Lopes, Caitlin Guenther and Dr. Richard

Veit.

Journey to Israel: February 28 – March 9, 2017 "Now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem." - Psalm 122

Dear Friends,

The Mount of Olives, the Sea of Galilee, Nazareth, the

Jordan, the Golan Heights, Jaffa, the Garden of Gethsemane.....

since my journey to Israel, the images brought to my mind

(and heart) when I hear of these places, will never be the same.

I can almost hear the sounds of the markets and see the

processions of ardent pilgrims from every corner of the globe.

And most of all, I have found a renewal of my Faith, as I read

And hear the old, familiar scripture stories as if for the first time.

Whether you have been to Israel before or are a first-timer, I do

hope you will prayerfully consider joining our 2017 trip to Israel.

This particular excursion will not simply be a sight-seeing

mission (although we indeed take in many fabulous sights and explore our Christian Faith and tradition); it will

also be something of a Peace-Making Journey. We will not only learn about the ancient Israel of the Bible, but

we will also explore and discuss the complex world of modern Israel. I cannot wait to say once again, "Now

our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem."

Christ Church is partnering with St. George’s, Rumson, to host our parishioners on a joint pilgrimage to Israel.

The tour includes: assistance upon arrival in Tel Aviv, transfers from and to airport, a licensed Israeli tour

educator, a luxury coach, hotel accommodations, meals of breakfast and dinner daily, and site entrance fees.

The estimated air travel (via United Airlines) is $998 per person. The Land Costs per person in a double room

are as follows:

20

participants 30

participants Single supplement

$1,645 $1,450 $735

Israel is only a bit larger than New Jersey, but the Holy Land’s unique religious and political history has had a

dramatic impact on Western civilization for thousands of years. We will explore the Old City of Jerusalem,

visit the Mount of Olives overlooking the Temple Mount and to the Garden of Gethsemane, and visit

Church of the Holy Sepulcher. We will take a guided tour of the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Center,

and drive down to Masada and the Dead Sea Basin. The trip will also include the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum

and Nazareth, as we explore the Spirituality and Nature in Northern Israel. We will also traverse a trail along

one of the Jordan River tributaries, exploring geopolitics, nature and archaeology. Go up the Golan Heights

and dialogue with Druse students and teachers. Continue to Mount Bental to gain a better understanding of the

wars of 1967 and 1973 as well as the current realities facing Israel. Finally, we will return to Tel Aviv, a most

modern and cosmopolitan city.

Do think and pray about this trip; I would love for you to join us for this once in a lifetime experience.

A more detailed brochure with itinerary is available in the Church Office. Do let me know if you are interested

in the trip.

Peace,

Mother Lisa+
