As we enter Holy Week, I can remember going to the Holy Thursday service at my parish in Burlington MA when I was growing up, and the hushed silence and darkness in the church after the service ended. These are holy and solemn days we are entering, and I invite you to check below for the schedule of services for this
upcoming week. You might spend time reading over the passion stories in the gospels, or a very good recent book is “The Passion and the Cross” by Ronald Rolheiser.
Finally, many thanks to all who have contributed to our 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. If you have not yet made a contribution, we ask you to please consider making one, as our parish plays a very important part in the BAA’s success.
Thank you, and blessings on your week!

In Wake County there are many families facing homelessness and thus struggling, on a daily basis, to survive. Through our
partnership with Family Promise (formally known as Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network or WIHN), we have a special opportunity to shelter four families attempting to transition out of homelessness for a week, Sunday April 16 to Sunday April 23. During the week, there are a whole host of volunteer opportunities for you and your family to help. This is a great opportunity to share in a work of mercy for someone looking to better their lives.
We need people to prepare and share a meal, help with childcare or transportation, or be an overnight
The Play and Pray Sunday morning ministry is currently accepting applications for a childcare provider position in our 1 year old room. Play and Pray is our faith formation nursery. Providers play with the children, sing songs and read Bible stories with them. A strong candidate will have experience working with young children, have a strong faith that they are excited to share with our toddlers and be willing to obtain Diocese of Raleigh Level C certification. The hours are 9:00am-1:00pm most Sundays, Play and Pray is not open on major holidays. If interested, please send a cover letter and resume to [email protected].

guest. You can bring the whole family! Remember that just your physical presence and willingness to enter into their life for even this small period of time, says to that person: “You matter… you are worthy and of value and deserving of dignity and my time.” What a beautiful message for all of us to hear in our upcoming Easter season – you have new life!
There will be representatives in the Stewardship Center after all the masses this weekend, April 8/9, to answer questions and sign you up.
Or you may contact Ron Smith directly at [email protected] or 919-455-7786.
Thank you for any help you can provide!

J oin our Young Adults Ministry for a weeklong service opportunity with the Franciscans at St. Francis Inn. The Inn has been serving guests for over 35 years, providing hope to those on the margins, through good food and a welcoming spirit. Our trip leaves early in
the morning for the drive up to Philadelphia, and we jump right into helping with preparations for the evening meal. Throughout the week, we'll get to serve homeless and low-income individuals and families through meal service and preparation.
We have room in the van for up to 6 participants to travel up to Philadelphia, leaving early on Monday morning and returning late Friday evening. If you are interested in joining us, email me at [email protected], or give me a call at 919-847-8205x244.

E very week, six teams of folks come into church, visit the tabernacle, and spread out
across Raleigh to share the Eucha-rist with those who cannot come to Mass. The reasons vary – some people are sick, some have mobility problems, some have transportation issues and some are in the hospital. Whatever the reason, a member of

our Eucharistic Ministry to Rex, to Abbotswood, to Magnolia Glen, to Springmoor, to The Meadows and to the Home, fan out to visit old friends, new friends, and to bring the bread of life. This ministry offers a beautiful blend of activities – the silence and peace of going into the Eucharistic Chapel to retrieve the Host, taking a new road, making a new friend or
spending time with an old friend, sharing the Gospel and being Christ for someone. What could be better? And if you’ve been waiting for an invitation to join us, here it is! We can always use the help, and you can always use another friend! If you’d like to join one of these ministries, on your own or with your family, give me a call 919-847-8205x241.

H aving a preschool on the same cam-pus as a K-8 school gives our young people at St. Francis of Assisi excit-
ing opportunities to learn from one another.
A new program called Come Follow Me, developed by our Preschool Director, Cathy Ashton, takes advantage of this opportunity by providing interactive faith formation for St. Francis of Assisi Preschool students and middle schoolers at The Franciscan School.
Come Follow Me is an invitation from our Lord to learn more about Him, but also to follow the example of the older students from TFS. In the program, preschool students part-nered with students in Mrs. Kristen Dellasega’s seventh and eighth-grade religion classes as they moved through four different learning stations that were set up in the sanctuary and lobby area of the church. This allowed middle school students to display leadership while sharing their faith with the preschoolers. All preschool classes - even the 2-year-olds - had the opportunity to rotate through four different stations and engage in faith formation activi-ties: Making a Prayer Pretzel, baptizing a baby doll, practicing the sign of the cross, and learning about being a lector. This was an enriching experience for all involved!
Preschool registration for the 2017-2018 school year has begun and classes are filling fast! If you have a child who will be 2, 3 or 4 by August 31, St. Francis Preschool may be a good fit for you! If you are interested in learn-ing more about the preschool or would like to see the preschool in action; please call Jen-nifer Stephens at 919-847-8205x262 or visit their website at www.preschoolatstfrancis.com
The Franciscan School is also currently accepting applications for K-8th grades for the 2017-18 school year. For more information or to schedule a tour, please contact Lura Tysiac at [email protected], call 919-847-8205x469 or visit www.franciscanschool.org.

E ach year, I am struck on Palm Sunday weekend by the crowds. I am in awe
about crowd mentality. When I think about large crowds, some of my first memories are from my college days. Moving from the cornfields of Illinois to the delta of Mississippi, I quickly learned the ropes at the collegiate level during the Ole Miss Football games with a pure display of Southern crowds. From the “Hotty Tod-dy,” the Wave, Grove tailgating, and Southern hospitality abound, I conformed to the crowd.
Crowds can be scary too. How about that first concert crowd? You know that feeling of herding cattle as you move through the turnstile. You can’t move in the direction you want. If the crowd is moving one way… so are you. I wonder about how those large crowds turn to destructive mobs. I wonder about how individu-als lose their sense of self-awareness and catch a mob mentality. To be part of the crowds in Jerusalem would have been interesting, perhaps even scary. You see, these same crowds had just laid down palm branches to welcome Jesus. These same people would, in the next few days, cry out for His death. They became a mob in a week.
Have you heard that crowd of noise in your life? Do we join the crowd or step out of the crowd and take a stand for what we know is true? Do you lead the crowd or do you follow in the crowd? What do you think about a good crowd? Think of the good that crowds can ac-complish… benefit concerts or sporting events, walks/runs, protests, sit-ins, or rallies. When people work together for a good cause for the same movement, good does become the movement.
We should brace ourselves for the crowds this week. Let’s go with the movement and be a good crowd of people. Let Jesus draw you closer this season through the crowd. As we transform our buildings to accommo-date the crowd with the Community Center being another place of worship, let us transform our hearts and the hearts around us to accommodate the love of Jesus for us. I would love to see each person bring a friend to one of our celebrations this week. Each of us, who are followers of Jesus, should lead two or more people to Jesus. I would love to see these buildings filled with crowds every day as we will be filled on Easter Sunday. Let’s be a crowd.

Note in the Pocket addresses this issue by providing school clothes and shoes to local students living in poverty. Volunteers are needed Monday – Thursday between 9:00am and 1:00pm to sort and deliver clothes. The volunteer center is on the corner of Millbrook Rd and Lacy Avenue. Group opportunities are also available dur-ing the weekday, nights and weekends by appointment. Visit http://www.noteinthepocket.org/ Contact: [email protected].
