From the Pastor’s Desk… “Do not call to mind the former things; pay no attention to the things of old. Behold, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it?” – Isaiah 43:18-19 I feel like I have been away for such a long time. At the time I wrote this, it was only 2 weeks. I miss you all. Yet as I am finishing up final papers for my Course of Study Classes, I know you are “holding down the fort” so to speak. Everyone is stepping up, maybe doing something new, or something that maybe you haven’t done in a very long while. Maybe you have been asked to do something because everyone else is gone from town. Seems we always have ‘just enough’ hands to do the work God calls us to! As I sat in the back row of the sanctuary on July 21 st (Yes, I am a fill-from-the-back United Methodist as well), I was in tears as I looked around. God has so blessed my life to overflowing with all of you. And as Stan spoke of “following God’ I continued to see around me all the servant-members who have answered His call. In this passage of scripture from Isaiah 43, Isaiah was writing to the children of Israel at a dark period of their history. They were in captivity, they had lost everything, and they were home sick for the land and the blessing God had promised them. They were ready for ‘a new thing.’ And Isaiah gave them God’s answer: change your focus; clarify what that focus is, and then commit yourself to the plan God has set for you. Simple right?!? For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future...” Quit looking behind you, was Isaiah’s message, and start looking ahead! What can possibly be in store for Reading United Methodist Church. What ideas do we have? What group of people need us to step up as a church and serve? Can you think of any? Once we name what needs to be done, Isaiah told his people to clarify it. What needs to be done within that group of people or animals. What is the need? It’s the whole: who, what, when, where, how and why of the subject. What is it that God wants you to do? We need to be ‘private eyes’ to figure it out but we can discover it. Finally, we need to commit to following through. Put it into practice to see if it will be viable. We need to help one another to completion, with God’s help and blessings, because of course, we call on God first to guide us. I have so many ideas for ministries that were brought to me. Some were long term; others were just once in a while. I will be sharing them with you in the coming months. Right now, lets look ahead. School will start soon, blessing of the backpacks on August 18, worship at the water on September 8 th and another year of sharing God’s message outside our sanctuary walls. Be bold and follow God’s leading to a ‘new thing.’ I know for sure you will be blessed. I feel like I have been away for such a long time. At the time I wrote this, it was only 2 weeks. I miss you all. Yet as I am finishing up final papers for my Course of Study Classes, I know you are “holding down the fort” so to speak.

Turkey Supper Retirements Announced

The 2019 Turkey Supper is scheduled for Saturday, November 2.

Jen will be seeking TWO NEW CHAIRPERSONS to help her carry out 2020 turkey supper. It would be great to

have two “interns” sitting in on this year’s planning sessions to wetten their feet. Planning meetings will start in

September.

If you are interested in taking on a co-chairperson role for the turkey supper, please talk to Jen, Phyllis or Sue. We all

know Jen is superwoman in the kitchen, but she can’t do it alone!

Worship at the Water

Mark your calendars for September 8th at 9:30a.m.

We will move worship out of the church building into Gods sanctuary at

Jacoby’s pond. Bring a dish to share and a lawn chair if you have one.

We thank God for continuing to bless our mission at June’s Place. Special Sales – Half price clothing tag color for August is PINK. We currently have an excess of ladies’ warm-weather slacks, shorts, jeans, skirts, and dresses. They will remain 75 cents until Festival Days, when all clothes and shoes will be 25 cents for that weekend.

Thank-You Notes – Marcia reported that the family who lost three children and an

unborn baby as well as their horse and buggy in a tragic accident were overwhelmed

with our gift of $1,000 to them. They said they certainly hadn’t expected anything

like that. The RUMC member’s grandson and his wife sent a thank-you note

for the $500 we gifted them.

Signs – We are looking forward to the hanging of our new 48”x42” sign outside the front of our store and moving the

36”x30” sign to the rear entry of the store. We will also be getting signs “Sorry We’re Closed” and “Service Animals Only

Please” which were voted on and approved after church.

Refrigerator for Volunteers – The small under-counter refrigerator that we use for water and lunches died. It was moved,

seconded and approved to purchase a replacement. Jen Steele will do that.

Kids’ Corner – It was moved, seconded and approved to purchase two small 3-shelf and one 5-shelf bookcase to re-

organize the kids’ books and toys corner. Marcia Ricker will oversee this project.

We are still doing two-person teams and only twice per year, for the most part. If you would rather have a three-person team, feel free to ask someone to help you. Each person on the team brings 2 or 3 batches of goodies to share, for example: cookies, veggies & dip, fresh fruit, meat/cheese & crackers. Each person on the team helps set everything up for fellowship time and helps clean up after fellowship time is over.
