We have three cottages on the property and enjoy a diverse range of people staying at any one time. The perimeter of the property is bordered by the Pennyroyal Creek of which we are proud to have regenerated a native corridor for the wildlife along our border - our guests manage to enjoy seeing a menagerie of animals and birds. Our lake and alpacas are by far a favourite, kids catching yabbies or taking the boat for a row out on the lake. Our alpacas fascinate and draw in people who have most times never seen one. These gentle creatures are mother nature’s lawn mowers and just as they make guests happy they prove invaluable in the grass growing months of spring. We look forward to many more happy years in the Pennyroyal community with retreat guests, alpacas and the odd happy platypus for company. Sara and Jason Cartmell Ph: 0402 074 073 www.otwaysretreat.com.au [email protected] Facebook and Instagram #pennyroyalotwaysretreat Pennyroyal Otways Retreat was ‘pie in the sky’ for an English boy living in a congested London semi detached house back in the 70’s. To Lind a piece of rural land in Australia was just a pipe dream for the fast- talking, street-smart London boy who made Australia his home at the age of 25. Years later, with a city life in Melbourne and happily married with 2 beautiful children the dream became a hard working reality. Jason discovered Pennyroyal ten years ago purely by accident, while driving the back roads of the Lorne hinterland. This unique piece of land south of Lorne was initially a rundown property, strewn with rubbish, 400 tyres, ringbarked trees and a blackberry mauled hillside - all combining to hide the magic and beauty of the land underneath. Two years of constant grind, mechanical breakdowns and beer injected working bees lead to the opening of Pennyroyal Otways Retreat. That year was one of the most intriguing and lesson learning years of our lives. The idea of city people creating a business/home in an existing rural community was slightly daunting and a tad intimidating. Would we be looked at as outsiders or accepted? Is the community open to city folk? Those thoughts lasted all of a minute - embrace was immediate…
