Physics the quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity. 2. The impetus gained by a moving object: the vehicle gained momentum as the road dipped. Put more simply, momentum is the power/force of a moving object. We all understand the concept – if you park your car on a steep hill and forget to set the parking brake, it could start to roll back downhill, picking-up speed as it goes, until it crashes at the bottom. The car starts rolling slowly, but it gets faster the farther downhill it rolls – that is momentum. You might be wondering why I’m bringing this up – well, I’ll tell you. A church can have or lack momentum, just like a rolling car. And just like a rolling car, that can be a good or bad thing, depending on the circumstances. For example, a church that constantly fights among itself is gaining momentum for a horrible crash, just like a runaway car rolling backward downhill. However, a church that is reaching out to the community, spreading the Gospel, and worshipping Jesus with continual joy is a church that is building momentum to make a real impact in their community for the Kingdom of God, just like a car speeding down a hill, under the control of an experienced stuntman, gains momentum to do a spectacular jump in a major motion picture. But momentum is a funny thing. It is powerful, but it can be hindered very easily. Using the car illustration again – if a car is starting to roll down a hill and encounters speed bumps, or if someone jumps in and steps on the brake pedal, the momentum of the car will be slowed or possibly stopped completely. Likewise, if a church is joyfully fulfilling Jesus’ Great Commandment and Great Commission, but the members get busy and stop attending – or if their commitment wanes for various reasons – then any positive momentum that the church has for expanding God’s Kingdom will slow or possibly stop completely. And momentum, once stopped, is hard to start again. Jesus says in Luke 11:23, “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” Ouch. I write all of this with one purpose in mind: to encourage us all not to be momentum killers. God has blessed DCBC – and we’re moving in the right direction and starting to pick-up some speed! Now is not the time to let our attendance, our tithing, our commitment to Jesus Christ to slip! (It’s really never the time, but you get the idea.) Now is the time to lean forward, to look and see where Jesus is leading, and to recommit ourselves to Him! Momentum comes from movement, and movement can be scary – but where Jesus leads we can follow, because we were not saved to sit, but to serve! Trusting Jesus, Brother Kevin

Pastor’s Paragraphs

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Let me begin by asking you a question: “What is momentum?”

According to the Concise Oxford American Dictionary, the word

momentum is defined as:

1. Physics the quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a

product of its mass and velocity.

2. The impetus gained by a moving object: the vehicle gained

momentum as the road dipped.

Put more simply, momentum is the power/force of a moving

object. We all understand the concept – if you park your car on a

steep hill and forget to set the parking brake, it could start to roll

back downhill, picking-up speed as it goes, until it crashes at the

bottom. The car starts rolling slowly, but it gets faster the farther

downhill it rolls – that is momentum.

You might be wondering why I’m bringing this up – well, I’ll

tell you. A church can have or lack momentum, just like a rolling

car. And just like a rolling car, that can be a good or bad thing,

depending on the circumstances. For example, a church that

constantly fights among itself is gaining momentum for a horrible

crash, just like a runaway car rolling backward downhill. However,

a church that is reaching out to the community, spreading the

Gospel, and worshipping Jesus with continual joy is a church that is

building momentum to make a real impact in their community for

the Kingdom of God, just like a car speeding down a hill, under the

control of an experienced stuntman, gains momentum to do a

spectacular jump in a major motion picture.

But momentum is a funny thing. It is powerful, but it can be

hindered very easily. Using the car illustration again – if a car is

starting to roll down a hill and encounters speed bumps, or if

someone jumps in and steps on the brake pedal, the momentum of

the car will be slowed or possibly stopped completely. Likewise, if

a church is joyfully fulfilling Jesus’ Great Commandment and Great

Commission, but the members get busy and stop attending – or if

their commitment wanes for various reasons – then any positive

momentum that the church has for expanding God’s Kingdom will

slow or possibly stop completely. And momentum, once stopped, is

hard to start again.

Jesus says in Luke 11:23, “Whoever is not with me is against

me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” Ouch.

I write all of this with one purpose in mind: to encourage us all

not to be momentum killers. God has blessed DCBC – and we’re

moving in the right direction and starting to pick-up some speed!

Now is not the time to let our attendance, our tithing, our

commitment to Jesus Christ to slip! (It’s really never the time, but

you get the idea.) Now is the time to lean forward, to look and see

where Jesus is leading, and to recommit ourselves to Him!

Momentum comes from movement, and movement can be scary

– but where Jesus leads we can follow, because we were not saved

to sit, but to serve!

Trusting Jesus,

Brother Kevin

out to our meeting.

Thanks to everyone who made this year‘s VBS a success! This is a tremendous way

to reach out to our community with the love of Christ!
