Holding a master of science in electrical engineering
and a master of fine arts in writing, Michael Alley is
an associate professor of engineering
communication at Pennsylvania State University.
He is the author of three textbooks: The Craft of
Scientific Presentations (2003), The Craft of Editing
(2000), and The Craft of Scientific Writing (1996).
Over the past twenty years, he has taught technical
writing and presentations to engineering and
science students at Penn State, the University of
Texas, the University of Wisconsin, and Virginia Tech.
In addition, his professional communication
workshops have been held across the United States
and in Europe. Sites include Harvard Medical School,
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the
Environmental Protection Agency.
Alley is the founder and lead editor for the popular
web-site “Writing Guidelines for Engineering and
Science Students,” which has a half-million visitors
each year and is the first Google listing for the topic
of engineering writing. The research on PowerPoint
by his Penn State team is being featured in an
upcoming documentary Rethinking PowerPoint by
Ron Galloway.

The Craft of Technical & Scientific Presentations is a one-day short course
designed to help scientists, engineers, and technical make their research
presentations more understandable, memorable, and persuasive.
The course, which focuses on research presentations, has four goals:
(1) to learn effective strategies for structuring research presentations;
(2) to rethink the design of visual aids;
(3) make technical presentations more understandable and memorable; and
(4) to learn how to translate the passion for the work into confidence during a
