S eems like there is always something interesting to do or see in downtown Newnan. The recent display of “Painted Horses”

on and around the court square has served to brighten the atmo-sphere, giving a more modern look to the old place. With most of the old trees now removed, the horses seem to add a little flair to the now open areas around the court house. Perhaps this will be the start of future displays of art which will add interest to this already popular gathering place.

Although I really enjoy looking, I’m sorry to say I’m not much of a man for horses. I have many friends who dearly love them, includ-ing a granddaughter who has ridden in competition, but I don’t seem to have that “way” with animals the way a real horse lover

does. I just can’t get on the same page as horses; they know it, and I believe they are silently laughing at me when I try. I couldn’t even get along with Nadine’s cat, which was with us for 17 years – may she rest in peace. (The cat, not my wife!) But I do admire those who enjoy horses and are fulfilled taking care of, and loving them.

I can remember riding a horse a least three times in my life: the “first”, the “only” and the “last” time. I was in my mid twenties and visiting a friend on Bruce Jackson Road when I accepted his offer to ride. Having watched a lot of cowboy movies, I thought I knew exactly what to do, since John Wayne made it look so easy. They say a horse knows when you are uncomfortable around it, and this one had me “sized up” at first glance. When I “climbed aboard”, it was obvious this ani-mal had his (or her- I don’t know) own agenda which would be made evident to me over the next few minutes. He took off even before I could say “go”, then ran through my neighbor’s garden, trampling much of the crop, before exiting the property. As we (I and my “friend” the horse) were galloping down the middle of the road at about 50 miles per hour, I could not seem to think of a single action those TV cowboys did to control their horses. I pulled on every rope, string, tail and mane I could grab, “hollered out” all those clas-sic phrases I had heard from cowboys be-ing chased by Indians, while desperately trying to “honk” the horn of the saddle to no avail! The horse was not impressed. My friends were right behind us in a truck as we (I and the horse) arrived at a farm about three miles away. “Oh, I forgot to tell you”, said my friend laughing. “This horse has a bad habit of running back to the barn with an inexperienced rider!” “And it’s not even my horse”!

Just give me an old fashion combustion engine with at least two wheels attached, and a horn that really “honks” when pushed. Then I can probably get from here to there, without any “attitude” from the vehicle. It will stop at my command, and won’t run away with me until I say ”Go”! But don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy looking at horses. Just make sure they are finished in a glossy color and their feet firmly attached to a stand.

JoePostscript: Although my wife and I live on almost two hundred acres, I am not a farmer, and the only animals on our property are “trespassing”. So, if you see me wearing a big cowboy hat, you can rightly say that I am “All Hat And No Cows”!

“When I “climbed aboard”,

it was obvious this animal had

his (or her - I don’t know) own

agenda which would be made

evident to me over the next few

minutes.”

Pruning Tips

Q: I haven’t pruned many of my hedges and trees in several years, and some of them have grown wild and ragged-looking. If they’re past the blooming stage, is it safe to trim them? Also, any tips to make this task easier? -- Carol in Oklahoma

A: Trying to tackle all of the shrubbery and trees in your yard can be daunting, even when it hasn’t been several years since their last pruning. The best thing to do is take an initial tour of your yard with notebook in hand. Mentally split the yard into several sections, and then note what needs to be done in each: trimming, pruning or even removal of foliage.

Next, tackle each section one at a time. Depending on your schedule, you may need to do one section each

day. A particularly foliage-heavy section may take an entire weekend. You might need help from friends or relatives to take care of large or excessively high hedg-es, meaning you’ll need to plan a time for them to come over. And if a tree needs complex trimming -- for ex-ample, its branches are encroaching on the roof or on power lines -- you’ll need to arrange for a professional tree trimmer to inspect it, provide an estimate and do the work.

Pruning on your own takes a little practice, but don’t worry too much about mistakes, as they will eventu-ally grow out. Plants that have already bloomed can be pruned without a problem, and plants or trees that are still blooming are, by this time of year, safe to trim.

As you’ll likely be piling up a lot of branches and limbs, check with your local government about proper disposal of yard waste. Most have programs in place, such as scheduled pickup dates during the growing

season, and guidelines for containers or bags that the trimmed branches should be placed in. If you hire a tree trimmer, be sure to ask how branches will be dis-posed of, and if that cost is included in the estimate.

HOME TIP: Keep hedge and tree-trimming equipment sharp, clean and lightly oiled so that they cut branches cleanly and efficiently.

Set to be built adjacent to the new Piedmont Newnan Hospital, the Neurosci-ences and Learning Institute will have outpatient clinical areas such as physician offices, examination rooms, and EEG and EMG diagnostic suites. Other features of the new building, which also will be used for ongoing education and training of medical staff, employees and patients, include: patient education rooms; conference rooms; a computer training laboratory; simulation training rooms; multi-purpose classrooms; and an amphitheater-style lecture hall.

“Mimsie and I wanted to make a gift to Piedmont Newnan Hospital for sev-eral reasons,” said Reese Lanier, who is a former patient. “I wanted to honor the relationship I have with my long-time friend, physician and Piedmont Newnan Hospital board member Dr. Truett Jarrard. In addition, I have received excellent care from cardiologist Dr. Charles Wickliffe and many other Piedmont physicians throughout my lifetime, and I value the expertise Piedmont will bring to our com-munity.”

Truett Jarrard, M.D. practiced at PAPP Clinic and Newnan Hospital from 1972 to 2000 and has served on the Piedmont Newnan Hospital board of directors since 2007. Charles Wickliffe, M.D. is an interventional cardiologist who treats Lanier at Piedmont Hospital and is former chairman of the Piedmont Healthcare Board of Directors.

As a not-for-profit health system, Piedmont Healthcare and its affiliated organi-zations rely on the generosity of donors like Mr. and Mrs. Lanier in order to offer many programs to the community. The Lanier family’s donation will be used to fund the initial phases of construction and equipment at the Neurosciences and Learning Institute. It is part of an $8 million fundraising campaign called “Building on our Promise” for Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

For more information about the new neurosciences program or to support “Build-ing on our Promise,” contact Kelly Loftin, director of philanthropy at Piedmont Newnan Hospital at 770-304-4147.

Grillin’ and Chillin’with Joe Powell

Through GRILLDOME OF NEWNAN, Joe can provide families with a high quality, ceramic grill/smoker which can be enjoyed for a lifetime. (Depending on your age, gentle reader) It uses real charcoal, but because of the grill’s adjustable venting system, the coals will last much longer – just add a bit when needed. “You can put in a piece of meat, smoke it unattended over night, and it will literally be ready to fall off the bone the next morning”, says Joe. He also sells the Atlanta Burning Sauce, which makes barbeque even better!

Joe is the co-owner of the Commercial House offices, a licensed real estate agent, and has a hobby-business restoring and selling classic cars, including my “new to me” 41 year old Mercedes Benz. Joe is a “One Off, Custom Made, Special Edition model”, and I consider myself fortunate that he has counted me as a friend for many years.

“Drunken Chicken”

One small, whole chicken

Add lemon pepper

After drinking the first two thirds of a beer, place the can, containing the remaining one third, into the chick-ens “cavity” and prop it on the grill using the bird’s wings for support.

Set the ventilation of your grill at about one half open – top and bottom with lid closed.

Return to your “inebriated fowl” in about two and one quarter hours.

Moisture from the beer will be drawn Into the chicken for a tasty feast.

If you enjoy outdoor cooking but don’t have that “just right” setup you need, you may want to get to know Newnan’s Joe Powell. For years, Joe has provided his friends and customers (who immediately become his friends) with the fellowship of great food and bever-age, along with interesting conversation just because he likes people. I had the opportunity, just last week, to assist Joe and some friends in putting down some great grilled bratwurst, smothered with grilled peppers and onions. As usual, I loved it!

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

• Buff spots off of silver with toothpaste. Rub gently with a soft cloth, rinse, and dry.

• Keep your dishcloths and sponges germ-free and smelling sweet. Once weekly, soak them overnight in a few cups of water to which you've added a tablespoon or so of bleach. It will keep them from developing a mildew smell.

• "To keep mixes from bunching up on the beaters of my mixer, I spray them with a little canola oil right be-

fore mixing. It isn't enough to affect the recipe, but I think it helps them do a better job. And I don't have to stop the mixer so often to scrape the dough from the beaters." -- R.V. in Oklahoma

• To clean tea-stained cups, use a couple of drops of dishwasher detergent. Stir and let set, then scrub out. It should wipe right out.

• "If there's a lot of burned-on food stuck to your pan, just add water immediately after cooking, then stick it in the oven (if oven-safe) at a low temperature for a little bit. It will soften the food and you can clean it

much easier." -- U.A. in Montana

• "Save larger envelopes in which you receive mail. You can reuse them by gluing or taping a new label on the front. You can close them with packing tape. Some of these envelopes are expensive." -- T.G. in South Caro-lina

Green and

WhiteGreen is Nature’s color. It is

restful and cool. White is pure and clean and cool like snow. Green and white together of-fer a refreshing, peaceful pic-ture. The simplicity of green and white is excellent in a small garden. It’s quiet sophistication lends itself to the formal garden. In our hot and humid summer it is refreshing. White lights up shade gardens and dark spaces. Green blends colors. Proportion properly applied can help to blend various shades of white plants. Spacing greens and grey or silver plants also helps blend whites. Use Artemisia, Dusty Miller, and Lamb’s Ears.

Design principles of balance, dominance, contrast, rhythm, proportion and scale will need to be carefully considered. Include a variety of textures of foliages and a variety of heights. Remember axis and focal point. Accents relieve monotony! Strive for simplicity and unity. Containers can be used as focal points or accents. Include vertical interest with trees, shrubs, vines, arbors, or wall planters. Walls, fences, or hedges make a

very effective background for plants.

Today, more than ever, there is a wide selection of plants with white blooms. There are also many var-iegated foliages available. New selections are being introduced every year. Shop around. Order catalogs.

Dog Isn’t

Welcome at

Wedding Venues

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My fiance and I are getting married at the end of June, and we want “Suzee,” our bichon frise, to be an important part of the ceremony. We agreed that she would be present as we exchange our vows, and will be in our wedding pictures.

The trouble is that we cannot find a venue that al-lows dogs, other than service dogs, inside. And we even had to drop one pastor who said that he would not al-low Suzee to be present when he led the ceremony! Can you help? -- Kurt W. in upstate New York

DEAR KURT: First of all, congratulations! Second, it’s not unusual for owners to include their pets in impor-tant life events like weddings. But it can be difficult finding a venue that accepts pets.

You should hit the Internet to search for venues that welcome dogs. Dogfriendly.com is a comprehensive guide to hotels and other facilities where dogs are al-lowed. Another site, vowwowwow.wordpress.com, is specifically for owners looking to include their pets in their wedding ceremony. Other sources are business review sites like Yelp.com, or word of mouth from friends and neighbors.

Even before you settle on a venue, start planning how Suzee will be incorporated into not just the cer-emony, but the entire day. You and your fiancee will be incredibly busy and distracted. Heidi Ganahl, CEO of Camp Bow Wow, advises couples to choose a trusted friend, or hire a professional pet sitter, to be Suzee’s caretaker throughout the event. Her attendant won’t just walk Suzee down the aisle to you, but also make sure she is fed, exercised, monitored and has enough “quiet time” so she doesn’t get stressed out.

Best wishes on this important day!

Homeelectrical safety tips

Commonly Asked Questions

Why are my light bulbs always blowing?

• You may have the wrong type of bulbs.• Voltage to the bulbs may be higher than the bulbs are rated.

• There may be a grounding issue with your home.

Why are my GFCI outlets always tripping?(The ones with the buttons)

• Age. If they are more than seven years old, change them.• Poor quality, low cost GFCI’s don’t last as long.• Improper installation. This is very common when not installed

by a licensed electrician.

Why are some of my outlets not working?

• The breaker may have tripped. If it did, there is a reason and should be checked.• Age. In older homes they can just wear out.• Improper installation. Outlets are easy to install but we see them done wrong on a daily basis. Only a licensed electrician

should be doing work on your home.

Why are my breakers always tripping?

• Using more power than the breaker is designed for. • Breakers wear with age.• Improper electrical work. It is really easy to wire something

wrong. Always hire a licensed electrician

Can electrical problems cause my Heat/AC unit to malfunction?

• Yes. Wrong size wiring, wrong type and size of breaker and even grounding issues can cause many different malfunctions. A simple check up could save you money and frustration in the

future.

How often should my electrical system be checked out?

• Every seven to ten years. An electrical system is mechanical and has wear and tear. Also, for safety reasons, certain parts are designed to fail. Breakers, GFCI receptacles and smoke detectors are not doing their job if they don’t trip, or “fail”. The more they trip, the more the wear out. If your home is more than 30 years old, have it checked regularly. With proper care, it can last for a long time.

Forgotten or Hidden Livable SpaceHave you been cooped up inside your home too

long? Got the urge to get outside and enjoy this beau-tiful weather we’ve been having? Well, get out the hose and rinse away the pollen, clean the outdoor furniture and add some decorative accessories and what have you got? Extra living space! Front porches, patios, balconies, backyards - any spot of unused turf - can be transformed into another living space for your family to enjoy or to help increase the perceived value of your property to a potential buyer.

Add an indoor/outdoor rug to define a space and decorate it as you would an indoor space … with outdoor friendly products. Most home improvement and decor stores have pillows made out of outdoor fabrics. Re-coating a worn out rocker or swing with a fresh coat of paint is a great way to add some decora-tive punch to your out- door living space.

Will your space be a “living area” or a “dining area”? Or both? Once you’ve decided on how you will use the space, the final step is to add the proper acces-sories and presto ...you’ve got a new livable area for yourself!
