L ast week, I found myself sitting in an automobile dealership’s waiting area for about two hours, while my car was being ser-viced, and in want of something to read. Now this particular

company, wanting its “detainees” to feel quite exclusive, served fruit, organic snacks, gourmet coffee and “designer” water. The furnish-ings were attractive and comfortable and tables were replete with stylish magazines showing some of the finest things money can buy. (Not a Wal-Mart flyer or a Sears-Roebuck catalogue in sight.) Their strategy was that, after looking at $1,500 shoes and $25,000 watch-es in this reading material, one would think nothing of paying the $275 invoice for an oil change. But this article is not about cars or fancy dealership showrooms.

One of the men’s fashion magazines I read while waiting had several examples of the “Properly dressed” man, including the costs of the clothes and where to buy them. (When I saw the costs, I didn’t need to know the store’s location!) Now I like nice “threads” as well as the next guy, and I understand quality, but I just don’t seem to be swimming in the same stream as the folks in those pictures. The middle-aged man was shown leaning against an expensive car, his arms folded and ankles crossed. He was wearing a great look-ing sport coat ($2,775), designer jeans ($400) a classic, open collar shirt (only $200), with a loosely tied neck tie ($195) and a pair of non-prescription designer sunglasses ($295). His loafers ($1,775) were, of course, worn with no socks. Oh, did I mention that his watch cost $38,000? There is absolutely nothing wrong with spending money on nice looking, good quality things. They are some of the rewards of success.

I, however, decided to make a fun comparison of how we “Regular folks” can look almost as good on a limited budget, so let me compare my description of actual clothes and prices with the one in the magazine article. “The (way beyond) middle aged man is shown leaning against his (older, but paid for) Land Rover, his arms folded and ankles crossed. He is wearing a great looking Hart Schaffner and Marx sport coat ($10.00 at Good Will but originally $700), a pair of jeans ($7.50 from the Dollar Store after a $2.50 discount), a classic dress shirt ($44.50 – after half-price sale), a properly tied neck tie ($30 from when “Brothers” went out-of-business), a pair of designer “flipper type” sunglasses clamped to his regular glasses ($15). His loafers ($100 on sale) are, of course worn with no socks). Oh, did I mention his Timex watch cost $39? So the total cost of my outfit: $207. (Not counting the price of my underpants.)

So the fellow in the magazine spent $5,640 for his clothes and mine were only $207. And to tell you the truth, if I swapped clothes with that guy, I probably wouldn’t look much better anyway, and from 20 feet away, you may not notice the difference. I would like to say that I have decided to opt for going the route of function over form - substance over status. But with a savings of more than five thousand dollars by not buying the clothes in the magazine, I may just want to go out and buy myself a used Rolex watch so my friends won’t think I’m a cheap skate!

JoePost Script: I chose not to mention the brand names of the great looking clothes in the magazine ad as it would be evidence of my “social inadequacies” as well as my “financial embarrassment”!

In the mid 1980’s, Walter and Helga Loe-sche were able to turn a tragedy into an op-portunity when their home burned and they lost their furnishings. Since there were not many furniture companies around when they needed to replace their lovely, quality pieces, the Loesche’s decided to start a high-end fur-niture store in a building they already owned right here in Coweta County. It started out as the local Bernhardt Furniture Gallery.

In 1996, daughter Marilyn joined the busi-ness, utilizing her air for design. When Mr. Loesche pasted away in 2012, Marilyn’s son, Christopher joined the team. Having just n-ished his duty in the US Marines, he was ready to join the company.

Encouraging Words

… from

Billy Graham

Q“Hope and change has become a cliché

in our nation. It is daunting to think thatany American could hope for change

from what God has blessed.”

Q“I believe that home and marriage is

the foundation of our society and must be protected.”

Q“Only God Himself full appreciates the influence of a Christian mother

in the molding of character in her children.”

Q“I used to read five Psalms every day –

that teaches me how to get along with God. Then I read a chapter of Proverbs every day and

that teaches me how to get along with man.”

Q“When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost;

when character is lost, all is lost.”

Q“But the wonderful news is that our Lord

is a God of mercy, and he responds to Repentance.”

“DAFFODILS”

Da odils are a beautiful sight each Spring but new bulbs must be ordered and planted in the Fall. Jonquils and Da odils are “Nar-cissi”, a pest-free perennials and not eaten by animals. Once estab-lished, they are a dependable, carefree plant that will easily natu-ralize and multiply. Being very long-lived, there are some on our farm which were there in my Grandparent’s time – long before my sixty-six years.

Da odils prefer a well-drained soil, but clay soil can be amended with compost, peat moss and sand. ese bulbs should be planted when the ground has cooled, usually a er a killing frost. It will cer-tainly help to top-dress Narcissi with a 4-10-6 organic granular fertil-izer. For very large planting areas, a motorized auger can save time, but for smaller plantings, scatter by hand and use a bulb planter. ese bulbs must be planted at the proper, speci ed depth and in a place that receives full sun to partial shade. Da odils don’t perform well when planted with perennials or trees that have invasive root systems. Next spring, remove the “spent” blooms to prevent seed formation, but don’t cut or braid the leaves as they allow the bulb to be nourished for the next year. Iris, daylilies, and/or hostas may be use to cover the old foliage, but let it die down before removing.

For over a half century – 53 years to be exact – Mike Hayes Newnan Home Improvement has been serving satisfied customers in both Coweta and Fayette Counties. It was certainly evident when The Coweta Shopper dropped by last week to do this story. Owner Mike Hayes had just finished a phone conversation with one of those

satisfied customers. That customer – who last had work done by Newnan Home Improvement some 20 years ago – had recently moved and needed some home upgrades. It was Newnan Home Im-provement whom the customer trusted with his home repair work again. “We could not have stayed in business for as many years as we have without doing honest, high-quality work,” said Hayes, who is now guiding this second-generation company. “And with that comes customer loyalty.” “My father (R.J. Hayes) started this business in 1961 and we’ve had the same phone number ever since.” Mike Hayes Newnan Home Improvement spe-cializes in insulated vinyl windows, vinyl siding, seamless aluminum gutters and more. “We are a full-service contractor,” Hayes said, who began running the company in 1978. Mike Hayes Newnan Home Improvement uti-lizes products such as Simonton Insulated Vinyl Windows and Alcoa Structure Premium Insulated

Vinyl Siding, outstanding choices in today’s world of energy and cost efficiency, design, style and low maintenance. Homeowners can realize substantial energy savings when considering Simon-ton Insulated Vinyl Windows as a replacement for existing windows on a current home. These R-Factor 5 windows can reduce the average heat loss in winter as much as 40 percent. An R-value indicates an insulation’s resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. The Simonton insulated windows meet Energy Star guidelines for all areas of the country as well as the strict standards of the American Architectural Manu-facturers Association for air and water infiltration. The windows are made with 7/8-inch double-strength insulated glass and tilt-in for easy cleaning. They are beautifully designed, maintenance-free and carry a lifetime warranty. Alcoa Structure Premium Insulated Vinyl Siding is another one of today’s top choices when it comes to getting that custom-looking exterior you’ve always wanted. The Alcoa Vinyl Siding offers superior energy performance, traditional style and classic elegance. “By using the Simonton windows and Alcoa siding, our customers are literally wrapping their homes to get the maximum energy savings these superb products offer,” Hayes said. Though both the Simonton vinyl win-dows and Alcoa siding are lifetime products, it is equally important to choose a company to install them that will be around as long as you are. And being a local company with longevity certainly helps. “That’s why it is so important to do high-quality work and having satisfied customers,” Hayes said. “We take pride in what we do, it’s how our business has persisted. It’s the loyalty between the customer and us. That’s what we’ve built – trust. That’s our best form of advertisement and that’s how we’ve survived all these years.”

Shopping at retail stores doesn’t have to empty your wallet. Reduce your spending at the cash register by follow-ing these tips:

u Walmart’s Savings Catcher Walmart has started a new savings program called Savings Catcher that al-lows customers to get an eGift card if a local competitor has a lower advertised price than you paid at Walmart. To take advantage of the program, visit https://savingscatcher.walmart .com/ and enter your receipt number. Or, scan the barcode on your receipt by downloading the Walmart app. Then, Walmart will compare prices and match the price of any local competitor’s ad for an identical product. If Savings Catcher is able to find a lower advertised price, you will receive the difference in the form of an eGift card.

u Sign up for Store Rewards Many retailers offer special savings through coupons, store rewards pro-grams and text and email offers. For instance, J.C. Penney custom-ers can visit www.jcpenney.com and click on “Coupons” listed under “More Ways to Shop” at the bottom of the page to find coupons for in-store and online savings. Customers can also sign up for text and email alerts on this page. They can get information about coupons, sales and special offers sent directly to their mobile phone, email inbox or both.

Visit your favorite retailer’s website to find out what savings are available.

u 7 Products On Sale in September Consumer Reports releases a list of products that shoppers can find the best deals on each month. The publication lists seven products that are at their lowest prices in Septem-ber. These products include: 1) bicycles, 2) digital cameras, 3) gas grills, 4) mow-ers, 5) small electronics, such as MP3 players, DVD players and Blu-ray play-ers, 6) snow blowers and 7) trees, shrubs, flowers and other plants. To view the entire story, visit: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2013/09/7-products-on-sale-in-september/index.htm.

u More End-of-Summer Deals Consumer Reports says that shoppers can also find great end-of-summer deals on the following:

• Vehicles – September is an excel-lent month to find bargains on vehicles

because dealers need to make room for next year’s models. New car models often debut in the fall, and shoppers could find discounts of 15 percent or more, accord-ing to Consumer Reports.

• Travel – Consumers can find great deals on airfare, hotels, theme parks and luggage in September. Monday and Tuesday are the best days to find airline deals. If you can wait until 24 to 48 hours before booking a flight, your chances of landing a deal increase, according to Consumer Reports.

• Outdoor Equipment – Prices on pa-tio furniture, camping equipment and other outdoor gear are much cheaper in September.

• Cooking Gear – Retailers introduce new ovens, ranges and cooktops in the fall, so shoppers can find deals on older models in September.

• Dinnerware – China, dinnerware, glassware and flatware are often 25 to 50 percent off in September and October, according to Consumer Reports.

u What Not to Buy in September Consumer Reports has also provided a list of products that consumers probably won’t find the best deals on right now. Here’s some advice on what not to buy:

• Cruises – Vacationers can find the best discounts on cruises in January, as

much as 65 percent off.

• Fall/winter clothes – Unless you wear hard-to-fit sizes, Consumer Re-ports recommends waiting until right before Christmas to find the best deals on fall and winter clothes, such as sweaters, coats and hats.

• Furniture – Shoppers can find the best deals on furniture in February be-cause new lines arrive after trade shows in April.

• Gaming Systems – Most new games are released right before the winter hol-idays and often include free items, such as a controller. Systems and accessories might also be bundled for the holiday season.

• Refrigerators – Spring is the best time to find a deal on older models of refrigerators because manufacturers in-troduce new models from May to July.

To view the complete story in Consumer Reports, visit http://www.consumerre-ports.org/cro/magazine/2014/09/your-guide-to-end-of-summer-sales-season/index.htm.
