T he celebration of the 4th of July is more than just grilling out, a trip to the beach or a fun picnic. It is a reminder that we live in a free country, where we can come and go, buy and sell and speak

as we please – as long as we are within the limits of our nations fair laws. Yes, America has her issues and problems, but we are still one of the best places to live on planet Earth.

I feel the same way about our community. Here, everyone is “somebody”, rather than just a number or a statistic. When I’m out and about, cir-culating through Coweta County, I feel like part of a big family – the Coweta County family. Unlike some folks, I try to do business face to face rather than sending a check or using an on-line service. I actually enjoy making my rounds to the bank, the post office, the dry cleaners,

restaurants, gas stations, etc. And yes, I still take my payment, in person, to the local EMC office so I can say hello to them as well. The majority of the places I go know me by name and make me feel like I’m their only customer. That makes me feel special – like “somebody”, and I think they treat most other folks the same way.

Coweta County is blessed with good people who are always at the ready to help when needed. The recent accident at the Bonnell Company was well handled by our county’s first responder teams. Then, as I understand, citizens offered their help to those respondents in the form of food, water and other help. The Community Welcome House, which gives help to women and children who are victims of domestic violence, was able to raise over $30,000 in a six-week fund raising campaign – the result of caring individuals and businesses. When there is a need, our community gets involved. It may be the Scouts, the Cancer Society, the Angel House for girls, the Special Olympics , the Arts, or the more than 125 churches in the area. In this Shopper issue, there is a thank you note from a woman who had a recent kidney transplant (from her husband). She was overwhelmed by the num-ber of people who helped them in so many ways.

I suppose I still think of Newnan and Coweta County as a relatively small place. Although the larger company stores do a good job, I still like to do my business with the locally owned and operated busi-nesses whenever possible, especially our loyal advertisers. They make a living here, provide employ-ment and keep “our” money circulating in “our” community. More than 600 of these mostly local businesses have advertised their product or service in The Coweta Shopper. (We’re still waiting on a few more when they are ready!) This mentality is called “Buy Locally”.

And finally, we are served by a fantastic group of county and municipal departments, operated under the authority of well qualified men and women, who make Coweta a great place to live and work – both now and in the future. But special thanks should go to the law enforcement officers, firemen and other First Responder protective services. They have a sometimes-difficult job and they do it well!

Coweta is not the only great place to live – there are many. Some of us were “planted” here while others were dug up and “re-planted” here. But we’re all part of a good bunch of folks who are will-ing to do what it takes, helping each other with their time and money. In my opinion, that makes us “top drawer”!

Joe Post Script:

I’m not a charter member, but was born right here in the old Newnan Hospital in the 1940’s and I actually have what I refer to as my “membership card”. It’s a receipt for the Hospital bill in the amount of $98.60 - a small amount even back then. Perhaps I’ve told this too many times, but as the story was told to me (or at least as I have chosen to remember it), the hospital gave my mother a big discount for having such a “great looking” baby boy! But as I always say, “Never let the facts get in the way of of a good story!”

Q. Help! I have fi re ants in my yard!A. so you’ve packed your picnic basket full of summer goodies and head outside for some picnick-ing with the kids only to fi nd that the fi re ants are waging war on your summertime fun! Fire ants are some of the most irritating and some-times dangerous insects we fi nd in our yards. Just ask any mom whose child has gotten into fi re ants and suff ered an allergic reaction. Scary stuff !Here’s what you need to know about controlling fi re ants:

1Summertime treatments are usually not as eff ec-tive as spring and fall treatments. As the weather

gets hotter, the ants go deeper in the ground. Th is doesn’t mean that treatments aren’t eff ective at all though. Th e ants are just tougher to kill.

2Use a two-step ap-proach by using a bait

and a contact and pur-chase your fi re ant treat-ment in advance so that you’re ready to treat when the prime time presents itself. In the summer, the best time to treat will be aft er a rain and when no more rain is expected within 24 hours. Fire ants reproduce aft er it rains that’s why you will notice new mounds popping up aft er a summer rain.

3 Apply a bait when ants are actively for-

aging. So how do you know if they’re foraging? Th row a couple of regular potato chips in the yard and go back to check on them 20-30 minutes lat-er. If they are covered in ants, then they are forag-ing. Don’t forget to look on the bottom side of the chip next to the ground. Fire ants don’t like to be in the hot sun, so they might be under the chip.

4Do not disturb the mounds or apply baits

directly to the mounds. Th ere are mound drenches available that are applied directly to the mound. If you choose a drench product, mix the proper amount into a

gallon container such as a water sprinkling can. Pour the solution on top of and around the mound like a gentle rain. Otherwise, do not disturb the mound. Use a minimum of 2 gallons of solution per mound. Be aware that these products still may not give an immediate kill.

5Use a broadcast spreader and apply bait over the entire lawn for large areas. If you have a few

mounds, you can treat them by sprinkling the bait around the mound but not on the mound.

6 Treat in the late aft ernoon when temperatures are between 60 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit or on

a cloudy day.

7 Once a bag of bait has been opened, try to use the entire product within a few days. Th e oil car-

rier can degrade over time, and the ants may not take it if the product sits out.

8Follow the label on the product – it’s the law! An assortment of fi re ant products are available at lo-

cal lawn and garden centers including baits like hy-dramethylnon (Amdro), s-methoprene (Extinguish), or hydramethylnon+s-methoprene (Amdro Fire Strike). If you prefer a mound drench product, look for spinosad, permethrin or bifenthrin products. In the woodland backyard garden of MGEV Bon-nie Umberger, paths lead to sitting areas and the sit-ting areas lead to tranquility. Birds sing and chirp, neighborhood dogs yip, yet we sit in a lovely shaded area, immune to the busyness of life.

Bonnie and her husband are native Atlantans who considered the cities of Cartersville and Madison before coming to Newnan to establish their careers and family. They lived on Greenville Street for ten years and in 1994 moved to their current home in the Lake Redwine community. Bonnie says Newnan has been a wonderful place to raise a family and she doesn’t regret it for a minute having a slower pace of life that Coweta County affords. Bonnie is an RN who puts her skills to work volunteering at the Sa-maritan’s Clinic and in her husband’s dental prac-tice.

Bonnie gardened as a child with her parents and her father’s specialty was rows of veggies and dahl-ias. As an adult, she started gardening to escape stress--she had a lot of family members pass away in one year and she says it was a healthy way to es-cape the stress of life. She says she initially became a MGEV in 1996 to learn more about the care of plants. Bonnie feels that the Master Gardener pro-gram has helped her as a gardener by exposing her to other gardeners who have enriched her knowledge of gardening. She says, “Every gardener has a dif-ferent focus--whether it be they propagate Japanese maples or have a wealth of plant folklore that you don’t read about in books. Learning and sharing from other gardeners, meeting people you might not otherwise have the chance to get to know, those opportunities are very enriching.” As her interest

in plants and design de-veloped, Bonnie later completed the Gwinnett Tech Horticulture pro-gram. Bonnie says her favorite thing about be-ing a MGEV is the good memories she has about the people she has met along the way and the pass-along plants shared from other MGEVs.

Bonnie’s woodland garden is approximately a half acre of native, heirloom, and pass-along plants. She says her children and their first dog helped make the paths in her garden by running and playing in the backyard, then Bonnie helped shape

and groom the pathways. As you meander the paths, Bonnie’s fondness for the history of plants is evident in her plant choices. Hydrangeas, camellias, and Noisette roses are on display. Bonnie says she often references her last Wilkerson Mill hard copy catalogue and she remembers a time in Georgia where there were many “Mom and Pop” nurseries. Two independent plant shops that she frequents are Goodness Grows in Lexington, GA and Petals from the Past in Jemison, Alabama. Bonnie stresses that the MGEV plant sale is valuable to the community since the group can propagate non-trademarked old fashioned plant material and sell those plants to the public.

Although the biggest challenge in her woodland garden is tree cover and root competition for nu-trients and water and her least favorite gardening chore is digging holes, it all is worth it in the end when she has sweet memories of people that shared plants with her--a particular iris has an emotional attachment--remembering the lady that shared it with her from Greenville Street. As our visit ended, Bonnie mentioned that her adult daughter is now calling for gardening advice, and that it is fun to see that excitement and progress, which in turn renews your own enthusiasm for plants and gardening.

And the winners were Justin and Bentlee Miller of Douglasville. “This was a lot of fun,” said Newnan Branch Man-ager Angie Starling. “We had many great entries and it really made judging to pick a winner a very difficult task.” The winners received their 1st Place Package of Gifts this week. The prizes were Movie Passes, and gift cards from Monkey Joe’s and Red Robin Gour-met Burgers. “It was our first year to hold a contest like this,” said Angie. “Another of our branches held a similar one for Mother’s Day. TeatimeTeatimeIn Praise of Blue Willow

I love dishes, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. My grandmother gave me the starter set of my everyday dishes—Rose Chintz by Johnson Brothers—and I have teawares in more pat-terns than I can name. But one of the patterns I admire most is one of the most beloved china patterns in the world, Blue Willow.

Th ere’s something so everlastingly charming about these beautiful pieces that have been around since the late 1700s. According to the International Willow Collectors, the Willow pattern has the distinc-

tion of being the china pattern that has been in continual produc-tion the longest.

Although the Willow pattern comes in many colors—including red, green, and brown—I’ve always preferred the blue. Th e blue-and-white porcelain was imported into England from China during the latter half of the 1700s, and once the potteries in England became es-tablished, many of the makers copied the pop-ular Chinese designs.

Today, makers around the globe con-tinue to produce a vari-ety of Willow patterns. I have a teacup and saucer that, like those dishes from my grand-mother, are inexpensive earthenware pieces by

Johnson Brothers in England. On the tea-cup’s saucer are some of the iconic images that make Willow-patterned pieces so easy to spot: a willow tree, two birds, people on a bridge, and a teahouse.

Several charming if highly suspect legends

exist regarding the in-spiration for the Wil-low pattern. One form of the tale has it that a wealthy mandarin had a beautiful daughter who fell in love with a man her father didn’t deem suitable. Th e

mandarin attempted to keep the young lovers apart, even arranging a marriage between his daughter and a noble-man instead, but the daughter and her sweet-heart escaped across a bridge and made their home together. Eventu-ally, however, they were found and suff ered

tragic deaths. Th e gods, touched by the couple’s love, immortalized them in the form of two doves, forever fl ying high in the sky.

We’ll never know what really inspired the Blue Willow pattern, but that certainly doesn’t keep us from enjoying it!

While I don’t have a full tea service in the Blue Willow pattern (yet!), I’ve seen friends’ collections and found them particularly strik-ing. Blue-and-white as a color palette never seems to go out of style, and I don’t think Blue Willow wares will, ei-ther.

For fun, I recently visited a couple of local antique malls in search of Blue Willow wares. As predicted, I found some pieces at each one. Some of the teacups were straight-sided and plain, others curved and elegant. At one mall, I found a pretty oval plat-ter as well as a vintage metal tin printed with the Blue Willow pat-tern.

Occasionally, I see Blue Willow–patterned tea towels and other kitchen linens in gro-cery stores and home goods stores, further confi rming that the popularity of this his-toric pattern continues.

And whether that ro-mantic legend is true or not, I believe Blue Wil-low will forever have a beautiful story to tell.

On the teacup’s saucer are some of the iconic images that make Willow-patterned pieces so easy to spot: a wil-low tree, two birds, people on a bridge, and a teahouse.

QUESTION: “I am having a very hard time navigat-ing through all the aging issues with my mom and am just overwhelmed. Someone told me that I should find a geriatric care manager. What is this person and what they do?” – S.S.

BETH: A geriatric care manager is someone with a background in nursing, social work, gerontology or psychology, who specializes in elder care issues and is trained to help family caregivers. They will assess, plan, coordinate, mon-itor, advocate, and pro-vide services for the senior and their family. Having a geriatric care manager can allow the children to be children, while someone else manages the often difficult situation of their parent’s care. Though counter-intuitive, hiring a geriatric care manager can save you money by lowering

your long term expenses by having a well thought out plan. Decisions made during a crisis are usually costlier than ones that are planned. Geriatric care services are not covered by most insurances and are not covered by Medicare or Medicaid. The average costs for services can range from $50 to $200 an hour with the initial assess-ment visit often being at a higher rate. A geriatric care manager can be a great addi-tion to your care team and can help you determine what your parents care needs are and when and if a facility would be best for them. The geriatric care manager can also help with family meetings to insure that relationships are not damaged dur-ing these hard times. n Beth Dow is the owner of Home Helpers and Direct Link of GA & AL. If you need a geriatric care manager, or have more questions about what they do, contact Beth by phone: 678-876-5118 or by email at either: [email protected] or [email protected].

Seeking the Lost, In uencingthe World

EncouragingWords …

Do You Want MoreOut Of Life?

Do you really know what you want your life to be? Andy Andrews wrote, “If you don’t design you own Life plan,

chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s Plan. And guess what they have planed for you? Not Much!”

Who are you blaming for where you are in life? Most folks blame their environment, their teachers, parents,

their boss or the government, But as Katherine Hepburn suggests,“It’s usually our own fault. If we really want to change,

we are the ones who must do it.”

But with my problems, I’ll never be able to change! We all have possibilities and opportunities.

According to Jim Rohn, “If you don’t like how your life is going, change it – you’re not a tree!”

Carrol Burnett realized this when she said, “Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me”.

She had problems, too. We can be a “has-been” or a “will-be”, which will it be?

Yes, I want something more but how can I get started?According to Mr. H. L. Hunt, “Decide what you want, and

what you are willing to exchange for it. Establish your priorities and go to work”.

Napoleon Hill added, “Start where you are, use what you have,do what you can”. Encourage yourself! Dwell on you opportunities

and possibilities rather tan your problems. And ask for help.

“Consult not your fears but you hopes and dreams. ink not about your frustrations but about your unful lled potential.Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed,

but what is still possible for you to do.”~ Pope Paul XXIII

“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Honor the Lord with your possessions,And with the rstfruits of all your increase.”

Owners Dee and Ted Glazier opened Dragonfly Running Company in downtown Newnan last October. The Coweta Shopper did a Question-and-Answer interview with Dee Glazier to find out how business has been going.

n What’s the inspiration behind the opening of Dragonfly Running Company? “The Dragonfly Running Company store was started to meet the needs of runners and walkers in South Metro Atlan-ta; including all surrounding counties.  We provide runners and walkers a destination to obtain specialty running shoes and to be fitted properly.  All too often a running shoe is purchased based on color, style or price; we at Dragonfly want to ensure individuals are getting what they pay for and trust when they leave our store they have been provided the highest level of quality and knowledgeable service.”

n How important is running to you? “I have been an avid runner for over 30 years.  I was in banking for 20 years on both the retail and commercial side; in 2010 I left banking and began a career in the well-ness and fitness industry but my love of running has always been foremost in my life.”

n Why the name ‘Dragonfly’? “The dragonfly sym-bolizes change in the perspective of self-realization and the understanding of the deeper meaning of life; finally being able to pursue this dream seems to go hand in hand with that symbolism.”

n How do you assess the first 9 months? How has the community responded? “It’s been worth every minute, I get to talk about running and shoes everyday. The community response has been very positive, overwhelmingly supportive and people are very grateful the store is here”

n What type of products do you specialize in and sell? “We carry Brooks, Saucony, Mizuno, Altra and Hoka One One in running shoes.  We also carry

Balega and Feetures running socks and Trigger Point products.  We have apparel and accessories as well as energy gels, chews and hydration tabs.”

n Does someone need to be an avid runner to shop at Dragonfly? “No, absolutely not.  We get as many walkers as we do runners; we also receive numerous referrals from local doctors wanting their patients fitted in the proper shoe.”

n What are the services you offer? “Dragonfly Running Company, LLC is dedicated to the advance-ment of health and fitness through providing supe-rior customer service, knowledge and expertise in the area of running and walking shoes. We provide the Fit Process to ensure every customer has the shoe to achieve whatever their fitness goals may be. We have group runs on Tuesday evenings and Saturday morn-ings. We encourage all levels to come out and join us; our routes range from three to six miles.”

n Why would someone shop at Dragonfly Running Company instead of the Big Box stores? “It’s a com-bination of our services: The Fit Process, understand-ing pronation, customer service, attention to detail and 100% customer satisfaction.

Q&A with Dragonfly Running Companyn What is the Fit Process? “The Fit Process starts with understanding pronation, the way the foot rolls inward when you walk or run. It is part of the natural movement that helps the lower leg deal with weight transfer to the foot; some people pronate more or less than others. By providing our customers with the fit process we will ensure each individual’s needs are met and accurately determine what type of pronator you are: more – overpronator or  less - underpronator.  No matter what style you are we make sure you are run-ning or walking in the correct shoe.   We accomplish this by utilizing video gait analysis.  Video gait analy-sis is the biomechanical assessment of an individual’s stride.   The goal of any running gait analysis process is to improve form, address inefficiencies, and help prevent future injuries. First we listen and communicate with you on what your past needs have been, what your current needs are and what your future needs might be. We also ask you about any past injuries you may have; we will help to educate you on what best fits your needs. After our intial consultation, we place you on the treadmill for about 30 seconds so that we may film your feet as they come in contact with the surface; this shows us the moment your weight is transferred to the foot. Our analysis will determine whether you pronate or not and only then will we be able to truly educate you on what style of shoe best fits your needs. We bring different brands for you to try and advise you to run in each shoe. You may choose to run on the treadmill in the store or try them out on the side-walk. We put you back on the treadmill to film you in the proper shoe so you can see how the right shoe impacts your stride and what a difference it makes. Seeing is believing; you will immediately appreciate the clear comparison of the right and wrong shoes. This process is completely free and no appoint-ment is ever necessary.” Dragonfly Running Company is at 10 LaGrange Street in Newnan. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm. Contact them at 470-414-1430 or you can visit their website at: dragonflyrunningcompany.com.

Coweta Master Gardener Extension Volunteers’Backyard Association July Meeting

Searching for Treasures in the Seven Sister States of Northeast India

Join us on July 12th to hear plant explorer and native Georgian, Scott McMahan, tell tales of his adventures while botanizing in Assam and Ar-unachal Pradesh, India in the spring of 2015. Th is region of the eastern Himalayas was

Scott relates that “from Cobras under the cots, to elephant rides through the jungle, traveling through India will never disap-point one’s sense of wanderlust”.Th e Backyard Association is an educa-

tional program sponsored by the Coweta County Master Gardener Ex-tension Volunteers (MGEVs). Presentations are held on the second Tues-day of each month at UGA Extension – Coweta County, 255 Pine Road, Newnan. Admission to the 7 p.m. lecture is free, and you need not register in ad-
