It’s time for summer to officially start with a long weekend we call Memorial Day. It seems to happen every year about this time. Many families are excited about going to the beach, or

the mountains or just enjoying a picnic at home with good friends. Smoke will rise from the burgers and dogs on the grill and the purist will be making homemade ice cream the hard way, indeed the best way, using a hand operated churn. And the country folk among us may engage in a spirited game of horse shoes on the lawn or just go to their favorite fishing hole with a picnic basket and a cooler. The enjoyment of this long weekend is what Memorial Day is all about. Really?

Many brave citizens have been willing to risk, yes even lose, their lives to protect and defend this great nation as well as giving aid to

other countries in times of need. To give your life so others can enjoy freedom is, I believe, the ulti-mate sacrifice. So we have set aside just one day of the year to honor those who have died in service, here and abroad, yet many of us seem to be more interested in having fun than remembering those who gave their lives. I suspect many children, and adults, too will tell you that Memorial Day is for “vacationing and something about some people who died”. Will the next generation even remember that last part?

I hope we wi l l never forget ,

and always honor, the people

who have diedto keep us f ree.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 when Gen. John Logan, command-er of the Grand Army of the Republic, organized a group to place flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The South was reluctant to get involved, however, they too united as a na-tion to honor those who died in World War I. And since the late 1950’s, flags have been placed on each of the 260,000 grave stones at Arling-ton and guarded by the 1200 soldiers of the 3rd US Infantry, 24 hours a day, during this special weekend. Many towns and cities still have cer-emonies to honor those who died in service.

I hope we will never forget, and always honor, the people who have died to keep us free. Free to buy and sell, to come and go, to worship, to pursue happiness, and yes, to have that freedom to enjoy and spend time with family and friends on holidays. Perhaps we can honor the dead by honoring those who continue to “serve us” in the military. And let’s teach our children that movie stars, singers and professional athletes are not the hero’s in life. The “Real Hero’s” are those who gave everything they had – and more.

JoePost Script: I was called to the draft during The Vietnam War and, on the appointed day, I and

about 50 others from Newnan were loaded on a bus and delivered to a big military warehouse for our physical exam in Atlanta. Being a skinny fellow, I was turned down for being about 5 pounds under weight. (Perhaps they had already made their quota for the day, I don’t know). Several of those on that bus died in battle. Looking back, I wish I could have been among those who have helped defend and protect America. Although I’m now far too old to serve, I can give honor to those who served, and especially those who died.

Ready For You.

For many people, Memorial Day marks the unoffi cial start of summer. Th at means the return of weekend getaways to the beach and the reemergence of the backyard barbecue.

Summer grilling season is the perfect time to gather with friends and family in a laid back atmosphere where formal att ire is forgott en in favor of fl ip fl ops and T-shirts. But as relaxed as a backyard barbecue can be, it also can quickly turn into a po-tentially dangerous or unhealthy situation, especially when the trusted grillmaster doesn’t take the following safety precautions regarding his grill and the foods he’s preparing.

Don’t let foods sit out for hours.• Th e United States Depart-ment of Agriculture advises grillmasters to refrigerate or freeze meat within two hours of purchasing it. Leaving food out next to the grill for a few hours increases the risk of food-borne illness. Th ough it might be more convenient to keep foods within spitt ing distance of the grill when you’re pre-paring to host a barbecue, you could be putt ing yourself and your guests at risk if food is left out too long.

Change cooking tools and plates when foods are cooked. •When transporting food from the refrigerator to the grill, make sure the plate or containers you use to transport un-cooked food are not used again until they have been thor-oughly washed. Never use the same plate for preparation and serving. Th e same goes for tools like spatulas and tongs. Bacteria from uncooked foods can att ach themselves to plates and cooking utensils, so cooked foods should always

Safety First When Grillingbe picked up with clean tools and placed on clean plates be-fore serving.

Cook foods to the correct temperature. • Undercooked foods are unhealthy and can cause signifi cant health problems. Th e USDA recommends grillmasters cook these popular barbe-cue foods to minimum temperatures:

Hamburgers -- 16O• º F

Poultry -- 165• º F

Beef -- 145• º F

Ground meats -- 160• º F

Pork -- 145• º F

Lamb -- 145• º F

Keep a fi re extinguisher on hand. • When grilling, you’re cooking foods over an open fl ame. Th is is true if your grill is a gas grill or a more traditional charcoal grill. Th e presence of open fl ames is a safety risk, so keep a fi re extinguisher on hand in case a fi re unexpectedly starts.

Grill away fr om your house.• Grills play a role in thousands of home fi res every year. When placed too close to a home or in a poorly ventilated area on your property, the risk of a fi re increases dramatically. When grilling, always choose a well-ventilated area, avoiding enclosed areas such as a cov-ered patio, that’s a signifi cant distance away from your home. Th is reduces the risk of the home lighting on fi re should a

grill fi re erupt.

Go easy on the lighter fl uid.• Lighter fl uid can be very dan-gerous, especially for those grillmasters with a happy trigger fi nger. When using a charcoal grill, look for charcoal that already contains lighter fl uid and needs only a lit match to light. If you must use more traditional charcoal, use only a minimum amount of lighter fl uid and never apply additional fl uid once the fi re has started.

Grilling season has arrived and backyard barbecues have once again taken center stage.

When grilling this summer, be sure to take certain precautions to protect against foodborne illness and fi re.

Electrical Outlets Don’t Sit Straight

Q: In my mom’s home, I noticed that a few of the cover plates on the outlets don’t sit flush with the wall. Some are angled

out so there is a small gap between the plate and the wall, for ex-ample. I tried tightening the center screw on the plates, but this didn’t help, and one of them cracked when I overtightened it. How can I fix this? -- Sarah in Syracuse, N.Y.

A: It’s likely that the receptacles themselves, or their housing, are misaligned. This can be caused by the screws holding

the receptacle in place being loose, or the housing (the junction box) not being properly secured. Because the receptacle or junc-tion box doesn’t sit straight, the cover plate doesn’t sit straight.

Use a small appli-ance, like a radio, lamp or a fan, to test whether power is reaching an out-let, by plugging the appliance into it.

Hence, the gap between the cover plates and the wall.

Turn off power to the crooked outlets, at the circuit panel. To make sure power is no longer reaching an outlet, plug a radio or a lamp into each of the two outlets of the receptacle. If they stay off, power is most likely off. However, always treat electrical hardware and wiring as if it is live.

Remove the cover plate and take a look at the small screws on either side of the receptacle. If they’re loose, tighten them so that the receptacle sits straight within the metal junction box.

Straightening the receptacle should fix the cover-plate alignment problem. However, if it doesn’t, check to see if the junction box itself is straight. It may have been installed at a bad angle.

If this is the case, adjusting the box is more complicated. You’ll have to remove the receptacle, disconnecting its wires and labeling them so that you are able to reconnect them correctly. Then you’ll have to unscrew the junc-

tion box from the stud, use a level to find the correct angle, drill a new hole or holes in the stud, then attach the junction box via the new holes, rewire the receptacle and put it back in place. This can be time consuming and frustrating, because you are working in a tiny space. If you’ve never wired up a receptacle or light switch before, there are several risks involved, from damaging the recep-tacle to injuring yourself.

In many cases, the first fix -- tightening the receptacle screws -- generally does the trick. However, if the second issue arises, consider the amount of work involved and whether you’re confi-dent in doing it. If you’re not sure you can do it, consider having a licensed electrician come in to straighten the junction boxes and give the house’s entire electrical system a look over for any other issues.

You can make a real diff erence in the life of someone who needs regular cancer treatments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments.

Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how oft en and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta County. Th e training is free. Requirements include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.

Join this meaningful program and make someone’s life a litt le easier. You might fi nd it makes a diff erence in your own life as well. For more info on becoming a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volunteer coordinator, Emily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

I have two alarm clocks that I contemplate selling every morning around 7:30. e

biggest one usually goes o rst. I hear it pa ering down the hall while I’m still dreaming. It climbs up the end of my bed stealthy as a cat and pretends to be my friend. It pulls the pillow out from under my head and cuddles up so close to me that I have to inch over until I am teetering on the edge of the bed, coverless and uncomfortable.

is is a crucial moment. If I manage to convince the alarm clock that it is still early, I just might be able to hit snooze. I lay motionless, waiting, hoping. Slowly I open one eye and disappointment sets in as I stare at my wide-eyed, smiling alarm clock. “Hi Mommy,” it says. I let out a defeated moan, knowing that the jig is up, the alarm has rung. is is when I discover that my alarm clock is not working properly. See I have waved the ag; I’m awake so it should be over, but my alarm clock does not stop ringing. It takes my defeat as permission to jump on the bed, sing, yell, slap, kick, whatever it takes to really get in some overtime. A couple of minutes into the routine I hear my smaller alarm clock start ringing from the other room and I really have to resist pushing my jumping clock right o the side of the bed.

I remember when I decided to order my second alarm clock. I had pre y good luck with the rst one up to that point, so I went ahead and ordered from the same manufacturer. I had no idea that the second one was pre-programmed to go o every two hours for about eight months. I was really sleepy during that period. e manufacturer must be a sound sleeper because he conveniently never heard the alarm clock in the middle of the night no ma er how loud it blared.

Now my li lest clock is 17 months old and still goes o intermi ently each night. My big clock is four years old and while it does remain silent throughout the night, it shakes the house when it rings in the morning. I think the warranty has expired on both of them. Don’t misunderstand me though; I do love my two clocks. I love the way they sing so ly to me while I’m cleaning them. I love staring down at their glowing faces when I check in on them at night. And mostly I love how much they need me and how much I need them in return.

Alright, sorry, but the sale is o , I’m keeping both of my alarm clocks a er all. Check back with me tomorrow around 7:30 a.m. – that’s when I’m most susceptible to renegotiations.

Veterans Of The “Forgotten War” Included In National Preservation Effort

(NAPSI)—Some American heroes can finally get the recognition they deserve.

Obscured by a tenuous ceasefire and subsequent Cold War crises, the Korean War is often described in terms of conflict, intervention or police action. Nevertheless, the service and sacrifice of these wartime veterans is a necessary component of our national heritage, and as such, the Li-brary of Congress Veterans History Project (VHP) actively seeks the oral histories, personal papers and photographs of these unsung heroes.

Through the Project, the voices of American veterans have generated an archive of personal military experiences that is now the largest col-lection of oral histories in the United States. Presently, VHP holds the collections of over 11,000 Korean War veterans. Dispelling the notion of a “forgotten war,” these narratives are both preserved and made available to the nation.

Korean War service featured a series of precedents within the United States military, including social factors such as the racial integration of the services as well as the technological advances of the Jet Age.

For example, as a commissioned flight nurse in the newly independent United States Air Force, Mary L. Weiss joined this new generation of avia-tors that deployed to the Korean peninsula.Assigned to the 801st Medical Air Evacuation Squadron, Weiss per-

formed a critical role in the medical evacuation of wounded Allied per-sonnel. Airborne triage was provided aboard both World War II era Doug-las C-47 “Skytrains” and the newer C-124 “Globemasters,” which rushed casualties from the Korean battlefields to hospital facilities in Japan.

As a composite record of service, Weiss donated an oral history inter-view, dozens of original photographs, her service record and an original creative work painted by her husband, whom she served alongside dur-ing the Korean War.

These narratives, made accessible through VHP, construct a personal account of American war veterans so future generations may hear direct-ly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. In addition to recorded interviews, VHP also depends on volunteers to donate veter-ans’ original photographs, letters, military documents, diaries, journals, two-dimensional artwork and unpublished memoirs.

Many people are adopting gluten-free diets for a variety of reasons. While such a diet means passing on foods that contain wheat pro-tein, such as certain breads, crusts and baked goods, it doesn’t mean giving up on grains entirely. Many grains are acceptable for those ad-hering to a gluten-free diet, and such grains can help fill the void left by avoiding wheat products.

Gluten-free foods are required for people who have Celiac dis-ease, an autoimmune condition of the small intestines that is triggered by the consumption of wheat protein. Celiac disease can cause damage to the lining of the small intestines, which results in a decreased absorption of nutrients. This can cause vitamin deficien-cies that deprive the body and brain of necessary nourishment.

While people with Celiac dis-ease have to avoid foods that con-tain gluten, many more people choose to remove gluten from their diets. This includes people with gluten allergies or sensitivi-ties that are not as severe as Ce-liac disease but can cause some gastrointestinal discomfort. The relationship between gluten and certain behavioral problems in children and adults also has been studied. In a paper titled “Devel-opmental Disorders and Dairy Products, Grains, Gluten and Other Proteins,” researchers at the Bamford-Lahey Children’s Foun-dation found that sensitivity to proteins in both dairy and wheat has been associated with a num-ber of neurological and behavioral disorders in groups of adults and children.

To avoid gluten, a person has to remove wheat products, barley, spelt, rye, and triticale from his or her diet. However, there are many other foods that can be eaten. Plus, flours made from grinding other grains can be used in place of wheat flour in recipes. The fin-ished products may just have less of the doughy or elastic consis-tency that is a hallmark of gluten. Here are some grains men and

women on gluten-free diets can still enjoy.Oats: • Though they are traditionally gluten-free, oats are often pro-cessed on the same equipment that processes other grains. There-fore, there may be some cross-contamination. Oats that are certi-fied gluten-free can be more costly.Buckwheat:• Despite the name, buckwheat is not related to regular wheat and is not exactly a grain. It is a relation of rhubarb. In its whole form it can take the place of pasta. In its roasted form, buck-wheat takes on a nutty flavor.Millet: • This is a seeded plant used for grain and cereal production.

Rice flour can be substituted for wheat flour in many recipes. Rice can also create a sense of fullness that comes with eating a starchy grain.Corn:• Cornmeal can be used in baked goods. However, it will offer a grainy texture.Amaranth: • This is a tiny, ancient grain. It is a complete protein and has more iron than most grains.

People following a reduced or gluten-free diet can enjoy a number of other alternatives in their cooking.

Millet is typically sold in pet stores as a treat for birds. Millet is generally flavorless and can be grainy. It can be mixed with other gluten-free flours.Quinoa• : This is not a grass plant or cereal grain but is actually re-lated to leafy vegetables. Quinoa is often eaten like you would eat rice or pasta, but it can also be baked into bread and cakes.Montina:• This is made from Indian rice grass and can be milled into flour or combined with other flours in a baking blend. Montina bakes up into a springy texture, which makes it popular in breads.Rice:• Many people avoiding gluten turn to rice as an alternative.

Doesn’t Mean Grain-Free Although wheat flour needs to be avoided when adopting a gluten-free diet, many other grains can still be enjoyed.

BriefsAlison Wallace, a fiery, God-fearing Englishwoman

with a heart for the lost and hungry, founded Bridging the Gap (BTG) on September 17, 2009, and has not looked back since. On the outside, it would appear that BTG is just another food bank, one more place to get a few meals once in a while. However, unlike many other similar or-ganizations, BTG was created to “not just give people food, but find out why they needed food and give them a solution, not just a Band-Aid. We offer a hot shower and new clothing; we also give items to people for job interviews. We help fill out forms for eyeglasses and Medicaid and also help supply food to other organizations so they may better serve,” says Wallace.

BTG also holds an annual Christmas in Coweta pro-gram that supplies gifts for applicants and a summer lunch program in which volunteers prepare and hand out thou-sands of sack lunches to children across the community.

Bridging the Gap’s name comes from the ‘gap’ that must be ‘bridged’ in getting “people from point A to point B without conditions. Many people are facing struggles and should not be judged. People need a hand up, not a handout,” says Wallace. Each week, BTG serves about 400 people and gets about 15-20 volunteers. Wallace says that BTG will “be getting a lot more people because we’re donating food to Meals on Wheels and other organizations that reach the senior population.” Although the ministry has “an abun-dant supply of fresh fruits and vegetables, we’re always in need of peanut butter and jelly and spaghetti sauce, noodles, and rice,” she adds.

Bridging the Gap offers an open food distribution and soup kitchen every Saturday at 23 Andrew Street in Downtown Newnan from 10:30AM to 12:00PM. How-ever, the ministry is in the process of moving to another facility- a three-story brick building located at 19 First Avenue, Downtown Newnan. “We’ll be moving from 8000 square feet to 25000 square feet,” says Wallace, who is very excited about the change of locations. “The first two weeks of June will be a transitional period, but we’ll still be distrib-uting food on Saturdays. We will fully reopen in the first week of July.”

BTG’s office hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10:30AM to 2:00PM. It can also be found online at btgcommunity.org. “Financial contributions are always welcome and can be sent to P.O. Box 223; Newnan, GA 30263,” says Wallace. “We cannot continue doing what we do without the help of our community. Thank you for be-ing the hands and feet.”

Psychological Benefits of Giving

Charities often benefit significantly from the generosity of donors and volunteers. But the person providing the philanthropy also takes away something from the experience, and there actually may be mea-surable emotional advantages to being charitable.

Helping others not only makes a person feel good, but it may also increase physical and emotional well-being. Several studies have indi-cated that being generous has profound effects on how a person thinks and feels. One such study from researchers at Cornell University un-covered that volunteering increases one’s energy, sense of mastery over life and self-esteem. It also promotes feelings of positivity, which may strengthen and enhance the immune system.

In 2008, Dr. Ellen Langer, a professor of psychology at Harvard University, advocated for giving gifts and being generous -- even in tough financial times.

“When you give a gift it makes you feel generous, it makes you feel in control, it’s good for your self-esteem, and it’s good for the relationship,”

says Langer.

According to psychologist Robert Ornstein and physician David Sobel, authors of “Healthy Pleasures,” they talk about a “helper’s high.” This is a sense of euphoria that volunteers experience when help-ing others. It can be described as a sense of vitality and a warm glow. It has been compared to a runner’s high and may be attributed to a release of endorphins.

Various studies have found that donors and volunteers gain the most from a charitable encounter.

Here are a few more health benefits that may result from being al-truistic:

J an activation of emotions that are key to good health,J lower stress levels,J longer periods of calm after the generous act,J improved mood, andJ a potentially longer life span.

There are many ways to give back and experience these physical and psychological benefits, including:

J sharing experiences at a school,J volunteering at a hospital,J volunteering at a national or local park,J donating unused items, like clothes or cars,J reading to children at a library,

J helping to care for animals at shelters,J volunteering at a hospice and comforting those at the

end of their lives,J donating supplies to a new teacher andJ becoming a companion to a senior citizen.

PAW’S CORNER by Sam Mazzotta

Should Your Pet Be Microchipped?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Fred” constantly tries to escape the house, and he has succeeded fi ve or six times. I usually lure him back with a bit of cat food outside the door, or a neighbor will call me if they see him. However, he usually loses his collar and ID tag when he runs away (he has a breakaway collar), and I’m afraid he’ll get lost or picked up by animal control. His vet said I should microchip him, but it’s pretty expensive at $100. Is it worth the cost? -- Carol in Virginia

DEAR CAROL: The cost to microchip your pet is not as much as you might think. While prices vary, microchipping can cost less, so ask around other clinics and pet stores that offer the service. Also, low-cost pet-care clinics are often held in towns and cities throughout the United States during the year; many offer microchipping services for less than $25.

The microchip itself is about the size of a grain of rice and goes just under your pet’s skin. If Fred runs away and is found by someone who brings him to a local vet, the clinic can scan for a microchip and can then retrieve your contact information.

Since your cat is a fl ight risk, it’s important that you also keep Fred’s vaccinations up to date. Rabies, feline leukemia, and FIV (feline immu-nodefi ciency virus) are diseases that outdoor cats are especially vulner-able to, should they encounter feral cats or wild animals.

Send your questions or comments to [email protected]. Did you know mosquitoes can transmit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fl eas don’t? Find out more in my new book “Fighting Fleas,” available now on Amazon.

It’s Planting SeasonWhat Kind Of Seeds Are You Planting In A Buyers Mind?

When buyers go to view property they may consider buy-ing, there are seeds planted in their minds and they may not even be aware this is hap-pening. Most sellers are not aware this thought process is like planting seeds, but it is taking place every time a buyers visits a property they may consider purchasing.

So, as a seller, what kind of seeds are you planting in a buyers mind?Negative Seed – Dirty Dingy Disaster: If there is dust all over, the air vents are dirty,

spider webs on light fixtures and dirty smelly carpet, can suggest that the property is not in good shape.

Positive Seed – Well Maintained: Be sure that you have a well maintained home. If a buyer walks into a house that is clean, smells pleasant and is organized, there is a perceived value that the property is in good shape.

Negative Seed – Too Small: Rooms that contain every piece of furniture that came in the complete “set”

when purchased, can be perceived as too small for a buy-er. Removing large and unnecessary furniture can make a room feel larger.

Positive Seed – Spacious Rooms: Even a small area can be perceived spacious if there is more floor space showing.

Negative Seed – Messy linen closets, crowded coat closets, cabinets overflowing when opened will make a buyer think that there isn’t enough storage space in this property and they may move on to the next house on their list.

Positive Seed – Organized Closets & Cabinets: When a buyer opens up a closet or cabinet and sees extra unused space, the perceived value will be “there is so much space in here that I won’t be able to fill it up!” It’s in a sellers’ best inter-est to clean out these spaces, throw away, donate or pre-pack unused items and store them.

Think about selling your home as if you are planting a garden. The goal is to have a great harvest at the end of the process. Be careful of the seeds you plant!

Encouraging Words

“If you paint in your mind a picture of bright and

happy expectations, you put yourself

in a condition conductive to your goal.”

“Every problem has in it the seeds of its own solution. If you don’t have any problems, you don’t have any seeds.”

“Action is a great restorer and builder of confidence.Inaction is not only the result, but the cause of fear.

Perhaps the action you take will be successful; perhaps different action or adjustments will have to follow.

But any action is better than no action.”

“Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a picture of yourself succeeding. Hold the picture tenaciously - never permit it to fade.

Your mind will seek to develop the picture if you do not build up obstacles in your imagination.”

“There is real magic in enthusiasm. It spells the difference between mediocrity and accomplishment.”

The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

Benefits To Hiring A Landscaping Service

A professional lawn service can save homeowners time, money and mistakes.

The desire to have a pristine, well-manicured landscape leads many homeowners to toil outdoors for hours every weekend. Hiring a profes-sional landscaper can free up homeowners’ time and help them ensure their yards are cared for properly.

One of the benefits of hiring a landscaper is the time savings. Land-scapers typically have commercial-grade equipment that can dramati-cally reduce the time it takes to mow and perform other maintenance tasks around your property. Furthermore, some services have multiple employees working concurrently, enabling them to tackle several proj-ects at the same time and complete them in a fraction of the time it would take a homeowner working on his or her own.

Landscapers familiar with botany and landscape design understand how to properly care for plants and trees on your property, while novice green thumbers may be unaware about when to prune trees and shrubs, at what height to cut the lawn and which plants will thrive in particular locations. Such do-it-yourself maintenance may even cost more money than leaving it to a professional.

Hiring a professional landscaper is, in many instances, more economi-cal. For a certain weekly or monthly fee, homeowners receive the ben-efit of professional knowledge and execution. Also, homeowners will not have the expense of purchasing the various tools and equipment neces-sary for lawn and garden maintenance, tools and equipment that include lawnmowers, string weeders, edgers, fertilizer, grass seed, leaf blowers, and shovels.

Another benefit is the lawn will continue to be mowed whether a hom-eowner is home or not. During the spring and summer vacation season, it’s easy for homeowners to overlook their lawn and garden in favor of recreation and leisure activities. Without proper watering and mainte-nance, lawns and gardens can brown or overgrowth can occur. But hiring a landscaping service allows homeowners to rest assured that their yards will be maintained whether they’re home or not.

Hiring a local landscaping service will not only benefit homeowners, but also it will benefit the local economy. Residents can feel comfortable knowing their lawn service will be available for calls when needed and will be familiar with the community. Also, local contractors may go the extra mile to earn your business recommendation.

Hiring a landscaping service can be advantageous to homeowners who want to free up time and still enjoy a well-maintained landscape.

Snacking Doesn’t Have To Be Unhealthy

Snacking often elicits mixed reviews. Some health plans say that it is important to eat several small meals or snacks during the day to keep metabolism rates in check. Other information states that snacks can be a person’s undoing, causing unnecessary weight gain -- especially when snacking is frequent. These mixed feelings can be a little confusing.

The National Health and Nutrition Survey supports snack-ing. The survey found that people who eat snacks in addition to 3 meals a day had higher levels of nutrients in their diets. But not all snacks are a good idea. Consuming a fattening bag of potato chips is an unhealthy approach to snacking. However, a piece of dark chocolate or a handful of nuts can add essential nutrients to a person’s diet.

Many different snacks make healthy additions to a person’s diet. Two to three snacks a day may be all that’s needed to help keep a person feeling satiated and less likely to overeat at meals. Here are some healthy snack ideas.

Olives: • A handful of olives can quench a salty craving and provide essential fatty acids that may help to improve heart health.

Hummus: • Hummus is made from chickpeas, which are naturally low in fat and high in fiber. This dip will keep you feeling full.

Edamame:• These are a variety of soybeans that are sweeter, larger and more easily digested than other soybeans. They are a natural source of antioxidants and isoflavones.

Banana and chocolate: • Rolling a banana in semi-sweet chocolate chips can satisfy a fruit and chocolate craving.

Dark chocolate bark:• Melt dark chocolate and add a de-sired fruit, such as dried cranberries, cherries, or raisins. En-joy a small piece, which will be high in antioxidants, to fend off hunger pangs.

String cheese:• An individual serving of low-fat mozzarella or Monterey Jack string cheese offers a serving of dairy and protein to keep you full.

Smoothie:• Whip up a smoothie made from protein-rich Greek yogurt and some frozen fruit. Add a dash of fruit juice and blend. Enjoy as a meal replacement or a refreshing snack.

Fruit: • There’s no better snack than fruit. Keep a bowl of fruit or some homemade fruit salad on hand and enjoy a small portion when you want to fill up without consuming too many calories.

Whole-grain crackers:• Fiber-full grain crackers can satisfy salty cravings as well as fill your stomach with something hearty.

You can choose among a variety of healthy snacks throughout the day. Smart snacking can mean reducing feelings of hunger and increasing the amount of nutrients in the body.

Other than checking the level of acid/water inside the bat-tery, the only other part of owner maintenance is mak-ing sure that the battery is clean and fi rmly attached to the car.

The battery terminals and cable clamps must be clean and corrosion free, otherwise a good electrical connec-tion will be compromised. Every battery will have a positive and a negative post either on the top of the bat-tery or on one side. To these ½” diameter lead posts will be attached a cable clamp that leads to a heavy elec-trical cable, one black and the other red, which in turn leads to things like the fuse box, starter, and other gad-gets. If there is a white soap powder-like pile of granules around the posts, you need to clean that off. Those gran-ules are acid crystals, so use water and a disposable rag or wire brush. You might want to try to remove them with-out getting them all over the paint and engine compart-ment. You can also wash the cables and battery areas with baking soda to neutral-ize the corroding effect of the acid. This isn’t a particularly dangerous or harmful task, but may be intimidating to some, so if you see that white

CAR CARE ESSENTIALS Check Your Car’s Battery part 2 …

powder on your battery, and don’t want to take care of it yourself, take your car to your mechanic and tell him about it. But if you do decide to do this easy task yourself, the acid is not strong enough to hurt you. Just don’t get it in your eyes. Wash your hands afterwards.

Another thing that an owner needs to check regarding bat-tery condition is the method used to clamp the battery solidly to the car. This will vary greatly depending on the size and the weight of the battery, the location, and the engineers who designed the car. All you as a responsible owner should do is to place both hands on a safe and clean place on the battery

and give it a strong shake. If the car rocks, then the bat-tery is fi rmly attached to the car. If the battery rocks and the car does not, then the battery clamping system has probably rusted away or oth-erwise broken. This is usually best left to a qualifi ed me-chanic to repair. Trust me; you do not want a loose 30 pound battery sliding around in your trunk or engine com-partment for very long. Get it fi xed quickly.

Renting an automobile can be practical for a variety of rea-sons. City dwellers with easy access to public transportation might not own a vehicle and might choose instead to rent a car when the need arises. Men and women who are leasing a vehicle might rent a car for a long trip to avoid exceeding the mileage restrictions that come with their leases. Even drivers who own their vehicles might rent a car in an effort to preserve their own vehicles for resale.

Regardless of an individual’s reason for renting a car, there are certain things all renters should know before taking the keys to their next rental.

Your credit card company might be insuring you.• Drivers who

have rented a car in the past are aware that rental company employees attempt to sell renters insurance for the vehicle before handing over the keys. While it’s definitely smart to be insured, you may already be insured if you’re paying for the rental with a credit card. (Note: Many rental agencies require a major credit card for customers to book a reser-vation.) Credit card companies provide this coverage at no extra cost to you, which can save you a substantial amount of money, as many rental agencies charge by the day for insur-ance. Consult your credit card company before renting the vehicle to see what, if any, coverage they offer. Some cards may not offer complete coverage, but even partial coverage

will still save you money.Multiple drivers will cost you money.• If you’re about to em-bark on a road trip and you plan to have more than one driver, you can plan to pay more as well. Each extra driver you add to the rental agreement will cost an additional fee. If you can make the trip with just one driver, then you will save money. Do not list one driver but allow others to drive the rental, as this might negate any insurance coverage you purchased from the rental agency or any coverage provided to you by an existing auto insurance policy or credit card company.Return the car with gas in the tank.• The rental agent will tell you how much fuel needs to be in the car when it’s returned. The car might need a full tank upon being returned, but more likely that figure will be about one-quarter of a tank. Remember that figure (which should be listed on your rental agreement) and do not come in below it. You will pay a lot more per gallon if the rental agency has to put gas in the tank than if you just remember to do it yourself.Avoid renting at the airport whenever possible. • Though there might be some exceptions, renting from an agency located at the airport is almost always more expensive than renting from an off-airport location. That’s because the rental agen-cies are required to charge customers an airport fee, which can be considerable. If you’re staying at a hotel in town, con-sider renting from an agency close to your hotel as opposed to one at the airport. The savings might be considerable, and some locations might even come and pick you up at the air-port if you so desire.Don’t sleep through the vehicle inspection.• Before you take the vehicle off the lot, a customer service representative from the rental agency and you will examine the vehicle for any damage, whether that damage is significant or minor. If you don’t pay attention during this examination and the company representative misses any damage, you could very well be blamed for that damage when you return the vehicle. Company employees may be disinterested in the inspection, so it’s up to you to notice and report any damage before you take the keys.

Renting a vehicle can be a convenient solution for travelers who need a car. But drivers should exercise their due diligence to ensure they’re getting the best deal possible.
