I recently attended an open house celebration at the newly com-

pleted Ansley Park Health and Rehabilitation Center here in

Coweta County. Although we have many high quality health care

facilities here, this is the first in our community dedicated to full ser-

vice, state of the art rehabilitation care. The interior is attractively

furnished as well as being architecturally interesting, and it has a

professional, yet comfortable, feeling of quality. There are over 60

private rooms for those patients in need of staying just a few days

or several weeks. From hip and knee replacements to cardiac and

stroke victims, to speech and occupational therapy needs, their staff

can “get you back on your feet”, so to speak.

I was, however, most impressed by the different therapeutic settings that mimic real life environ-

ment situations. They have set up a mock store with stocked shelves and a cash register. They have

installed a real car (front half only) to help patients learn to get in and out, buckle up, etc. The gym will

help you regain strength and coordination, and there is equipment for pain therapy. And their mock

living room, bedroom and bathroom will help you practice moving around and doing everyday tasks –

things “well” people take for granted.

However …

Just in case I need to be a guest there after my next stroke, I’ll need a few additional items with

which to practice getting back to “my” normal activities. I’ll need a “Mock” weed eater that I can use

for about an hour at a time. (Or I could just go outside and use the real one and maybe work off some

of the bill). A fishing rod and reel to practice casting up and down the halls would be nice, too. And

an old aluminum TV antennae which will rotate, attached to the outside of the building, will help me

re-learn to tune in my favorite TV stations when I get home. But the most important task will be sitting

in front of the steering wheel in that mock automobile with my wife sitting at my side. (No rehab prac-

titioner will be needed for this therapy). My wife will clearly tell me which way to turn, how fast to go

and when to stop. She will also admonish me to keep my eyes on the road and watch the pedestrians.

And she’s so good at it, they may just offer to bring her on as a full time driver rehab “specialist”.

You know, when we are healthy and independent, we may not realize the benefit, indeed the bless-

ing, of being able to move around and do simple tasks in our home or yard, or at work. A facility like

Ansley Park can be a life saver for those of us who have been stricken with an illness or an accident,

unable to move around, or to come and go and to enjoy life as fully as we once did. Although fully

recovered, I have been there and done that.

And it’s not just the Ansley Park facility. In the last few years, Coweta County has experienced many

new and modern health care facilities which, I believe, greatly add to the quality of life for the citizens

in our community.

Think FallSpring has ‘sprung’! All the pollen on cars and porches and everything

else, including the dog, leaves no doubt about it. Spring planting fever is induced by all this pollen being breathed - that’s an unscientific fact. So now that we’re all crazed by this fever, it’s time to think Fall. Yes, folks, Fall - shorter days, lon-ger nights, crisp air and glorious colors.

The best time to plan for a beautiful, bounti-ful blooming Fall garden is Spring. Just as we plant daffodils and tulips and snapdragons in Fall for a lovely Spring show, we also want to plant some Fall favorites in Spring. Now is the time to purchase and plant Japanese anemo-nes, asters, chrysanthemums, salvia, rudbeckia, Mexican sage, Russian sage, pineapple sage, sedum, swamp sunflowers, perennial and an-nual grasses. The small plants, with proper soil amendments and water and fertilizer, will grow to be lush Fall plants by Autumn.

After chrysanthemums and asters are up be sure to pinch them back until July 4th. This will make fuller plants that don’t get leggy. Spring is the time to divide sedums for new plants. Cut the sedums back a couple of times during the Summer for shorter, bushy plants. Cut back swamp sunflow-ers before dig-ging to divide (if in Fall).

Japanese anemones are a great addition to the Fall plan. They vary in heights and shades of pink. My personal favorite is the ‘Honori-ne Jobert’ - a very tall, white-blooming type that has been grown since at least 1858.

Additional sugges-tions are Joe-pye, sol-idago, Belladonna-lily, artemisia, celosia, Chi-na-aster, Lycoris, au-tumn/crocus, nerine, Liatris, and toad-lily.

Some extra effort now will yield amaz-ing rewards for August through October.

Spring is here and it is peak real estate selling time.

Realtors are singing a dif-ferent tune than they were a few years ago. It was a buyers’ market then. Buyers had their choice of properties from foreclosures to reduced prices on homes that should have sold for much more than they did. However, the real estate market seems to be slowly correcting itself.

Overall, signs are pointing toward a healthier real estate market for 2013. Now experts are saying there is insuffi cient inventory and that we’re transitioning into a seller’s market in much of the country.

Does this mean that we don’t have to stage our homes to sell anymore?

I say NO! KEEP STAGING YOUR HOUSES! (of course I would say that)

You may argue now that there is less inventory on the market, you don’t have to do all the work you would have had to do a year or so ago. It may be easy to fall into a “take it or leave it” mind set. Be care-ful! Don’t be fooled into a false sense of security by this news.

Buyers are savvy and most will pay more money for a move-in ready house. Today’s buyers are smart, they shop around for the best deal and they are will-ing to wait for it. They don’t want to put all their savings into down payment, closing cost and mov-ing expenses and have a “honey-do” list after they purchase.

They are still going to start home shopping via the internet at Multi List Sites and if they don’t have amazing photos and plenty of them to see, they will eliminate these unprepared houses before they are even considered.

A Few Terms To Know Before You Go To The RodeoThe growing popularity of rodeo, which, according to the Professional Rodeo Cowboy As-sociation, attracts 30 million fans each year, has piqued the curiosity of many people who have never before attended a rodeo or watched an event on television. Upon discovering the rodeo, men, women and children often find it as compelling if not more compelling than most popular mainstream sports.For those interested in rodeo but uncertain about its terminology, the following are a few terms to know, courtesy of the PRCA.* Barrelman: An entertainer who uses a barrel to distract a bull after a ride. Such distrac-tions sometimes protect the cowboy.* Breaking the barrier: This occurs during a timed event when a rider leaves the box too soon, failing to give the bull a sufficient head start. Riders who break the barrier are as-sessed a 10-second penalty.* Bullfighter: An athlete who protects the bull rider after he dismounts or is bucked off. A bullfighter can distract the bull by directing its attention to the exit gate or even stepping

between the bull and the bull rider.* Chute: a pen that holds an animal safely in position.* Covering: this occurs during roughstock events when a rider stays on at least the mini-mum time of eight seconds.* Draw: Conducted three days before each PRCA rodeo, the draw is random and assigns each roughstock competitor a specific bucking horse or bull. Time-event contestants are assigned a calf or steer in a random on-site draw shortly before each rodeo begins.* Flags: used in rodeo’s timed events so judges can signal the timers to stop the clocks. Judges in the arena will drop the flags.* Flankman: a cowboy or cowgirl who works in the bucking chutes, adjusting the flant strap around the animal before the ride.* Go-round: each round of competition in a rodeo.* Hazer: the cowboy who rides on the right side of the steer from the contestant to make sure the steer runs straight.* Hooey: the knot a cowboy uses to finish tying the calf ’s legs together in tie-down rop-ing.* Piggin’ string: the small rope used to tie a calf ’s legs together in tie-down roping.* Rank: an adjective of praise and respect used to describe especially challenging rough-stock.* Riggin’: a suitcase-style handhold customized to a rider’s grip and attached to a molded piece of leather that is cinched, with a pad, around the horse’s girth.* Roughstock: the bucking horses and bulls used in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding, usually bred and raised for the job.* Stock contractors: the companies that bring livestock to the arena for rodeos.* Triple Crown Winner: a cowboy who wins three world championships in the same year.

There are many different outdoor sofas and chairs that are as stylish as they are comfortable. These pieces can be matched to the decor inside your home for a cohe-sive look.Accessorize. Consider the creature comforts of indoors •and mimic that outdoors. Don’t shy away from hanging artwork on an exterior wall or using urns or pottery to decorate the space. Weather-resistant materials ensure everything from clocks to televisions can be used out-doors. Think about having an entire set of serving dish-es and other entertaining items for the outdoors.

After you have read your Own-er’s Manual and otherwise famil-iarized yourself with the engine compartment, you are ready to check your car’s oil level.

Open the hood so you can see the engine. Locate the dipstick. On newer cars it will probably be a bright colored plastic handle that has a little oil can symbol on it. Pull it out of the tube and wipe off the long fl exible metal strip with a rag or paper towel. Be careful not to get any oil on your clothing or hands or the car itself, it’s messy, and could stain your clothes. After you have wiped off the oil on the end of the dipstick, reinsert it into the tube making sure it goes all the way in. Then pull it out again. At the end of the stick there will be two marks that indicate the maximum level and the mini-

mum level. Oil left on the stick should be somewhere between the two. Brand new oil is the color of honey. Used oil will be black or have a brownish tint. The indicator could be a pair of holes, two notches, a cross hatch design or any of a number of other designs. Your Owner’s Manual will show you what to expect. It will also tell you what type of oil (natural, synthetic, or a blend of the two) and the vis-cosity (e.g. 5W-30) to use. Use what the manufacturer recom-mends. Just like the brand of gasoline you use, the brand of oil is not critical – they are all about the same. But be sure to use the type and viscosity the manual recommends.

Topping up a low oil level is fair-ly easy and not especially dirty; so, many people will do it them-

selves. Buy a quart or two of the recommended oil. Find the oil fi ll tube which is not the same place the dipstick came out of. Add a little oil, then recheck the level and keep adding more un-til the oil level reading is within the marks on the dipstick. Be careful you don’t add too much because overfi lling can do harm and taking oil out is not easy. If your car is older and has begun to use, leak, or burn oil, check-ing it yourself at frequent inter-vals is a good idea. An oil leak in the engine compartment will at-tract dirt and grit. An oil leak on your driveway will be black and slippery. Adding a little bit of oil is a lot easier than doing an oil change. You don’t want to run out of oil or allow your engine to run very long with low oil level as this will cause excess heat, rapid wear, and can even cause metal parts to fuse together. Low en-gine oil gives you no warning until just before it is too late. Af-ter you pay thousands of dollars for a new or rebuilt engine, you will probably be incentivized to learn to check the oil more reli-giously.
