Every day we hear the word media, and what they are saying about this or that. A medium, as you know, is any form of communica-
tion that reaches the general public. The media, therefore, is simply the sum of the individual mediums. They include TV, internet, print, radio and so forth. The Coweta Shopper, for example, (and a good one at that!) is our form of printed communication that connects the citizens of our community with the products and services available here. I suppose these “announcements to the public” have existed throughout history, from smoke signals, to engraved stones displayed in the town square, right up to our modern, amazing internet. But the thing which influ-enced me most as a child was television.
In the early 1950’s, TV was just getting going good and folks were glued to the screen, just as we are to our monitors today. In Newnan, we re-
ceived three stations on about a 16” screen installed in a box about half the size of a refrigerator – black and white, of course. Around 1952, when I was but a wee knucklehead, one of my favorite shows was “The Woody Willow Show”, with host, Officer Don. Do you remember? Woody was sort of a cowboy type wooden marionette, playing alongside his girlfriend, Theresa Termite. It was a live show, produced in Atlanta, featuring about a dozen young boys and girls sitting on old apple crates and watching Woody perform. They played games (remember “ooey-gooey”) and watched old reruns of the Little Rascals. The show started in the late 40’s and was later called “The Popeye Club”. Every child dreamed of being on that show – being on real TV!
I suppose I should call this article “How I (almost) got my start in show business”, cause one day “I got the call”! I would be on live television, and as far as I was concerned, everyone on the planet would be watching The Woody Willow Show just as I stepped out in front of the cameras. A few other friends were going, too, and as I remember, we were a group from Miss Mae’s Kindergarten and would be accompanied by our moms. My mother and I told everyone we knew (or any stranger with a TV set) of my forthcoming appearance. As we entered the WSB-TV studios that afternoon, the mothers combed our hair and straight-ened our clothes. I was, of course, lookin’ good and sporting a bow tie, and my mother was ready to show me off. The moms were to sit on bleachers off camera while we were to sit on those apple crates – you know, the “Peanut Gallery”. Well, after all the preparation, all that talk, I froze like a statue and wouldn’t let go of my mom. I “chickened out” at the last possible moment and sat with her instead of my friends. My hopes and dreams of being a movie star, indeed my “start in show business”, would not be realized that afternoon. And as to my mother, I could only think, “Oh Lord, help me!. She went form being crest-fallen, to embarrassed, followed by sheer anger, and I knew I was about to “get the business”. About the time my tender backside was engaged between the sharp and powerful nails of her thumb and forefinger, I jumped up and hollered, “Ouch! You pinched my fanny!” “I did not!” was her loud reply. The camera men couldn’t help but laugh. Officer Don couldn’t keep a straight face, then all the kids started laughing, along with the moms. All but my mom. She was ready for World War III and the battle was being played out for everyone on the planet, including all of Newnan, to hear! But it was a quiet ride home.
So, I missed my big opportunity that day, but I did finally acquire an acceptable alternative writing the Publisher’s Page of The Coweta Shopper. Most would wonder what’s so great about that. The fact is, when I balanced my check book the other day, I realized I would be working until I am 95, so it might as well be something I really enjoy doing.

Since there’s not much gardening to do in Winter, it’s a good time to study arranging. It does provide a change from seed catalogues and tool shed chores. In the past I’ve written about plants to grow for arrang-ing, conditioning plants for designs, and flower arranging terms defined. Now I thought it might be helpful to suggest some tips on planning and improving design.
Do plan your design first - selecting the ap-propriate container and the right mechanics for the flowers and/or foliages you plan to use. Consider placement - the style and colors of the room and the height and size of furniture or other spots chosen. Does the shape and size of the place you want a design used best fit a tall vertical design, a low horizon design, a small arrangement, or perhaps a huge mass? Do you need to be able to see over the design (as at a seated meal)?
If you are arranging in front of a mirror, be sure to make the back as lovely and fin-ished as the front. Do collect your container/mechanical aids, well-conditioned plant ma-
terials, and arranging tools before you begin - just as you would assem-ble all the ingredients and equipment before beginning to cook. Select a container that will enhance (but not compete with) the flowers you plan to use. Generally, neutral colors (green, beige, gray, white, or brown) work well. Clear glass can be lovely with lilies or roses because of their smooth, elegant feeling. A white container should always have some white materials in the design for unity. All white flowers and a white container, on the other hand, can be tricky - add variegation, foliage, and tints and shades for va-riety, otherwise it could be monotonous. Gener-ally, avoid shiny containers - they can be a bulls-eye and take away from the design. The size and weight of container to the plant materials chosen is very important.
Think about the shape of your design. Will it be a symmetrical or an asymetrical one? What shape will work well with the plant materials you have - triangle, oval, round, crescent, fan-shaped or modern creative? Will this be a line, line-mass, or mass design? Flowers and foliages chosen
should be compatible with the design style as well as the room, occasion, and the container. A base can add weight to the container to achieve better balance. An accessory (where appropriate and carefully selected) can add interest to a design or help in establishing balance. Oasis (wet), sahara (dry), chicken wire (crumpled), needlepoint holders, lead strips, or waterproof floral tape can be used to secure the design style in the container.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Coweta County is a life-changing event that gives everyone in the com-munity a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, re-member loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. We are now getting prepared for the next 2013 Relay For Life Coweta County meeting! We are asking for anyone interested in starting
a team or participating in The American Cancer Society Re-lay For Life of Coweta County to come join us on February 19th at 6:30 pm at the Newnan First Methodist Church Fel-lowship Hall at 33 Greenville Street in Newnan. If you have never participated in Relay For Life of Coweta County be-fore, this is your chance to come out, learn about the event, and help fight cancer! ROAD TO RECOVERYVolunteer Drivers Needed
If you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider becoming a volunteer driver for The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. This volunteer-based program provides free trans-portation to cancer patients to and from their treatment locations. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular can-cer treatments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments.
Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta County. The training is free. Require-ments include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insur-ance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.
Join this meaningful program and make someone’s life a little easier. You might find it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more info on becoming a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volunteer coor-dinator, Emily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

Third Annual Valentine Social at Thomas Crossroads February 8th
Local Peachtree Jazz Edition Offers Big Band Music, Dancing and RomancingThe United Methodist Men of Cornerstone United
Methodist Church in Newnan are proud to announce their third annual “Heart & Soul” Valentine Social on Friday, February 8, 2013, from 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. The event will feature the Live Big Band music of The Peachtree Jazz Edition with vocalist Toni Byrd.
The Christian social was a huge success the last two years with over 300 guests each year who enjoyed a beauti-ful evening of music, refreshments and dancing.
The Valentine Social is designed as an outreach to the community and as an event that encourages fellowship, provides a heart-healthy function for those who care to dance, and enables adults to enjoy an evening of Valentine fun. Proceeds from the social will benefit the United Meth-odist Men’s mission programs.
Peachtree Jazz Edition is an 18 piece band with out-standing vocalist Toni Byrd. The band plays an extensive repertoire of Big Band music from the ‘30s & ‘40s as well as pop- jazz tunes composed and arranged well into the ‘90s. Original compositions by Mr. Bill Greenhaw, one of the band’s trombonists, round out the group’s unique presen-tations. Peachtree Jazz Edition’s repertoire also includes many original arrangements recorded by such artists as Glen Miller, Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole, Melissa Man-chester and Willie Nelson. For more information, please visit http://sites.google.com/site/peachtreejazzedition/. Click on “sounds” to hear a sampling of the group’s music.
The Valentine Social is open to the public 17 years of age and older. Whether you are a couple or single, this event is designed for you. Those attending may have their por-traits taken to commemorate the evening. This year, the event will offer dance lessons and a silent auction as well. Childcare from infant through 5th grade will be available at no charge with advanced reservations to [email protected].
In addition to the musical entertainment, hot teas will be provided as well as gourmet coffee donated by the Newnan Starbucks located at 733 Bullsboro Drive near the I -85 interchange. Luscious desserts will be provided by the Kroger Bakery located at 1751 Newnan Crossing East at Lower Fayetteville Road.
Advanced tickets are $15 ($20 at the door). The doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets to the Valentine Social can be pur-chased: From any member of the Cornerstone United Methodist Men; In the Cornerstone UMC narthex before or after the Sunday services; In the Cornerstone church office Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. or Friday from 7 a.m. – 12 noon

Housetraining 101DEAR PAW’S CORNER: How do you housetrain a dog? Does it take a long time? -- Soon-To-Be Dog Mom in Illinois
DEAR EXPECTING: Housetraining a dog -- basically, getting a dog to eliminate outside rather than whatever spot is convenient in the house -- can take anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks. The length of time depends on several factors, including a dog’s age, intelligence and your commitment to its training time.
Consistency is the key, so place that word at the top of your to-do list before bringing home your new dog. It will make life easier for you and your dog in so many areas down the road.
Housetraining itself is pretty basic. Twice a day, morning and evening (more often for puppies), take your dog outside, on a leash, to a spot well away from the house (or the neighbor’s house). If you’re in a city environ-ment, scout out trees and sidewalk areas. Let your dog explore the spot while you gently encourage it to go. There are a number of command words you can use to signal that it’s to eliminate. I use the truly original statement, “Go poop.”
Your dog will not understand you immediately, nor will it go on com-mand. But most dogs will pee during the walk and may defecate. (Please pick up the poop using a scooper bag.)
Accidents will occur during housetraining, particularly with puppies. Do not scold or rub the dog’s nose in it. Try and catch it as soon as pos-sible after it eliminates in the house, say “No,” and immediately put it on the leash and head outside to the selected “go spot.” Then bring the dog back in, clean up and try again at the next scheduled time.
Again, I’ve had dogs figure out the routine in a single day. Others have taken longer. Be patient and consistent, and stick to the schedule even after your dog has mastered the art of the go.

Our car (or cars) is near the top of the list of our most expensive, most essential, and most troublesome possessions. To many of us (usually us men) our car is also a status sym-bol and extension of our personality. Yet many of us do not know or even care to know much about its care and feeding, no less its safe and efficient operation. How it looks and how WE look driving it is often a more impor-tant consideration. Either that or we assume it will work flawlessly like an appliance, with no attention from us, because after all, we paid so much for it and we have so many more im-portant things to do.
But, consider this. Think of your car or truck as a 4000 pound weapon on wheels. Think of the energy it con-tains. 4000 pounds at 60 miles per hour, or even at 30 miles per hour. That’s a tremendous amount of pow-er. Then realize it is all under your control. You are the driver and its use or misuse is your responsibility, no one else’s. That means you are responsible for its use and misuse. It is tough and unfair (maybe even illegal) to blame anyone else. We have all seen the horrendous photos of car wrecks in which people have been killed or injured. Next time you see one, think about the person who survived or the person who didn’t. Think about the innocent victims and the effect on their lives of this trauma. I think all of us would agree that the avoidance of this kind of catastrophe, suffering and pain should be very im-portant to each and every one of us.
The proper and safe use of your vehicle is affected by many, many variables. Some of these are weath-
Car Care essentials Introduction …
er, road conditions, other drivers, the car’s mechanical condition, your physical and mental condition, knowl-edge of and compliance with driving rules and regulations, visibility, dis-tractions, and countless others. Ig-norance or disregard of any of these can lead to problems. And with that 4000 pound weapon on wheels, the consequences can be quite serious.
In upcoming columns, we will talk about some of the simple and inex-pensive things you as the owner, operator, or person responsible for the consequences of the use of this weapon can do (or have done for you) that will minimize some of the danger and dire consequences that go along with this weapon. We won’t get into vehicle dynamics, physics, and other scientific subjects. We’ll talk about some simple things you as a driver can do with very little cost, a small amount of learning, and a large amount of awareness.
I am referring to preventive mainte-nance, the kind that is mentioned in every Owner’s Manual or DVD. We’ll relate these discussions not to perfor-mance, or speed, or efficiency, or lon-gevity, but to safety. After all, you the operator are the person responsible for the well being not only of yourself but of your passengers, other drivers, innocent bystanders, and your big in-vestment. We expect to get from point A to point B without incident or harm. That only happens if the responsible person is truly responsible and uses this weapon in a knowledgeable and responsible manner. That responsible person is YOU and that 4000 pound weapon is YOUR CAR.
So, we’ll talk about keeping your weapon operating within the parame-ters for which it was designed, caring for one of your biggest investments, protecting your loved ones, eliminat-ing your liability for misuse or disuse of the weapon, using intelligence, high levels of skill, concern, aware-ness, and care to protect yourself and others from harm. Driving skills or lack thereof is one issue. Know-ing your limitations and the limita-tions of your vehicle are another. Be-ing aware of your surroundings and their possible effect on your driving experience is another. Keeping your vehicle in decent shape is a relatively easy and inexpensive task. You can do some of it yourself, or you can pay someone else to do it for you. We won’t get into anything heavy or dif-ficult or dirty, just a few simple checks that vehicle ownership entails. If you find a problem during one of these tasks, then it is your responsibility to get the problem corrected. That’s re-sponsible ownership. That’s common sense. My only desire is to convince you to assume the responsibility and do it or get it done.
So, sit down, buckle up, and pay attention. Here we go!

NOW HERE’S A TIPBy JoAnn Derson
• “Here’s a fun afternoon of play just waiting to happen: Check with your local grocery store or big-box store to see if it has uncrushed card-board boxes. Get several to create a cardboard city in your living room or child’s bedroom. They can be decorated to look like anything, or cut, trimmed and taped into most any shape. Kids even like to stock them with pillows and blan-kets for a cozy sleepover. When you’re done, break them down and recycle until the next ad-venture.” -- J.J. in Florida

• Sources who know say that if you drop a clean glass marble in your tea kettle, it will prevent it from scaling.
* * *• Like to use paper towels to dry your clean hands? Set them aside to dry instead of just throwing them out, then you can use them with glass cleaner or other solutions.
* * *• Use a shower curtain cut or folded in half un-der baby’s high chair to make floor clean-up easier.
* * *
• “Air-popped popcorn is healthier for you. If you have an air popper, you’ll also have a jar of popcorn kernels. Keep them in the refrigerator or even the freezer. You can use them straight from the fridge, and the bonus is that you’ll have fewer unpopped kernels and bigger, fluffi-er popcorn.” -- E.M. in Wisconsin
* * *• “Stuck at school with a sticky zipper? Just rub it with a pencil lead and zip back and forth a few times. It totally works.” -- W.K., a middle-school student in Georgia
