The Christmas gift buying process has now begun, at least for most, but I’m happy to just sit back and watch from a dis-

tance. I’ve been told that everything is done “online” now, and you can sit in your living room, push a button, view everything on the planet, and have almost anything delivered to your front door a day or two later. Really? So why are so many families forming lines at the doors of the big retail stores in the middle of the night? I think for many, these early sales are a way to stretch the dollars in a still limping economy. For others, however, it’s pure sport where a whole bunch of “Gold Medal”, award winning shoppers have been let loose for the season.

At least one old company has adapted to the times. Sears Roe-buck began mailing their Christmas “Wish Book” in 1933 offering gifts for adults as well as a variety of toys for the children. The name was later changed to the “Christmas Catalogue” and then renamed “Wish Book” again, starting in 1968. One could order items by mail or phone for home delivery, and arrange financing with low monthly payments. Back then, they were the largest, indeed one of the few, doing this. And thy have kept up with the times, when, in 2009, they introduced a new, interactive ver-sion allowing shoppers to turn “virtual pages” online and purchase products instantly from their computers. Our younger readers might say, “Was there ever any other way?”

When I was a boy, just a young knucklehead, Christmas season started the day that old Sears book arrived. I, along with my brother and sister, (there would be more of us later) would lie on the floor for hours, pouring over the toys in the catalogue. There was page after page of electric trains, dolls, toy ovens and cook sets. We looked at plastic soldiers, bicycles, roller skates, games and farm sets with cows, a trac-tor, and a barn. I read every descriptive word of the items that were of interest me, over and over, literally wearing out the pages. (A habit which has followed me through life when I want to buy something - it’s called “The Chase”.) And we made our desires known in writing, with a pencil of course, as the list would change from day to day. Inasmuch as my brother was too young to read or write, I agreed to record his requests, then listing the things I wanted, signed (printed) his name on his list for review by our Mom. He didn’t realize what I was doing until Momma asked him how he learned to read and write at such an early age, then told him what I had listed. I was caught! But we were all happy when, on Christmas morning, we ran down the stairs to see what awaited, forgetting all about what we had asked for, just being on an emotional high reserved for that day only.

So, we can shop from a printed catalogue or online, or we can visit stores, but the results are the same. I suppose the “Christmas Catalogue” is of yesterday – a thing for museums. But, young children still seem to have that special innocence and excitement on Christmas morning, and I hope that will not ever change. There will be plenty of time, later, for them to have the responsi-bilities of the challenges and opportunities of adulthood. But not now.

JoePostscript: As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

House, Holidays & GuestsThe House is Listed, The Holidays Are Here, & Guests Are Arriving! Hav-ing your house on the market to sell during the holiday’s is challenging enough as it is. You are constantly having to keep the house picked up, staged, the kitchens & bathrooms sparkling clean, eliminate any food or pet odors and shuffle everyone out of the house when you have a showing. It’s not easy to live in a “showing condition” home while it’s on the market.

Try adding out of town guest and holiday decorations and you’ve got the ingredients for a huge disaster or with a few simple tips and some planning ahead, it can be one of the best holidays ever.

Try to keep the holiday decorations to a minimum. Put a simple wreath on the door, remove a few 1. accessories to replace them with special holiday accessories and keep the clutter down as much as possible. It won’t be much different from “non-holiday” staging, however, it will still create the spirit of the holidays.

Prepare guests in advance that your house is going to remain on the market during this time while they 2. are visiting. You may even want to place a check list in their room or central location of the house so

that everyone knows what tasks need to be completed in case of a last minute showing call.

Be sure to provide your guests with as much storage as possible. 3. Somewhere to hide their luggage, a tray to corral their toiletries or tote to use so they can be stashed under the vanity in a hurry. Keep the throw pillows on their beds to a minimum so they won’t have to worry if the bed is made up exactly the way you want it. KISS … Keep It Simple Silly!

Provide them with a map of your area, special events they may be 4. interested in attending, movie showings & times so they/you will have something fun to do while the house is being shown. I’ve heard of some showings taking as long as 2 or more hours. If your house is being viewed that long by a potential buyer, that’s a great sign and you certainly don’t want to rush them into a decision that might keep them from buying your property because you and/or your guests came home too early.

Plan on having some of your meals out. This will help keep the food odors down, although some holi-5. day baking fragrances have been known to create a special “Welcome Home” feeling for a buyer and we all know emotions are a huge factor in making a decision on purchasing a new home.

I hope you have a Great Holiday Season and a Merry Christmas. If you need any advice about how to prepare your listed house for guest during the holidays, contact …

Moreland Meals and Memories Cookbook

“Moreland Meals and Memories,” the new cook book prepared by the Moreland Community Historical Society, is at the printers and will beready for Christmas giving. “We are looking forward to having our cook-book as a great source for finding good recipes – and as a reminder of our community’s interesting past,” said Josh Evans, MCHS president. The cookbook has almost 400 recipes, gathered from cooks in Moreland and friends of the community and society.

Evans, who is also the town’s mayor, wrote an introduction to the book. “Moreland Meals and Memories” will also feature a short history of Mo-reland by local writer Winston Skinner, who also wrote vignettes about various facets of Moreland history for the section dividers.

Books purchased in advance – with a deadline of Dec. 7 – will be $15 each. Mailing is available for an additional $2. Orders may be sent to MCHS, P.O. Box 128, Moreland, GA 30259. After Dec. 7, books will be $18 each.

People who purchase pre-orders will be able to pick up their books on Dec. 19 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Moreland Mill. Evans and Skinner will be available to autograph books from 10:30-noon that day. People who pre-order but cannot pick up books on Dec. 19 should include a phone number and/or email so arrangements can be made to pick up books. All proceeds go to help preserve our local history and other historical society projects.

Glazed Ham with ApricotsYes, ham can be the centerpiece of a healthy holiday meal -- just choose a piece that’s lean (ask for shank), low-sodium and smoked (to re-duce fat). Amp up the flavor with apricots and mustard-marmalade glaze.

1 (7-pound) fully cooked

bone-in smoked half ham

1 package (6-ounce) dried apricot halves

2 tablespoons whole cloves

1/2 cup orange marmalade or apricot jam

2 tablespoons country-style Dijon mustard with seeds

Preheat oven to 325 F. With knife, remove 1. skin and trim all but 1/8 inch fat from ham. Secure apricots with cloves to fat side of

ham in rows, leaving some space between apricots. Place ham, fat side up, on rack in large roasting pan (17 by 11 1/2-inches); add 1 cup water. Cover pan tightly with foil. Bake 2 hours.

After ham has baked 1 hour and 45 min-2. utes, prepare glaze: In 1-quart saucepan, heat marmalade and mustard to boiling on medium-high. Remove foil from ham and carefully brush with some glaze. Continue to bake ham 30 to 40 minutes longer or until meat thermometer reaches 135 F, brushing with glaze every 15 minutes. Internal tem-perature of ham will rise 5 to 10 degrees F upon standing. (Some apricots may fall off into pan as you glaze.)

Transfer ham to cutting board; cover and 3. let stand 20 minutes for easier slicing. Slice

ham and serve with apricots from pan. Serves 16.

Tip: Ham halves are available as butt or shank. The shank half looks more like a classic whole ham because it contains the leg bone. It’s also easier to carve than the butt half, and less fat-ty.

• Each serving: About 240 calories, 7g total fat (2g saturated), 62mg cholesterol, 1,525 mg so-dium, 16g total carbs, 0g dietary fiber, 29g pro-tein.

Orthopedic Outpatient Surgery at the Summit Surgery Center

I’ve been told I need orthopedic sur-gery? What is orthopedic surgery and where is it performed?

Orthopedic surgery includes any surgical procedure performed on your bones or joints. Many of these procedures can be performed in an outpatient setting, which means that the patient can go home later the same day after having surgery.

Common outpatient orthopedic surgical procedures include arthros-copy, hand surgery, foot surgery, and even many spine procedures. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, where the sur-geon makes a small incision and uses a scope to look in a joint and make a repair. These surgical techniques are easily accomplished in the proper outpatient setting, maximizing effec-tive care and minimizing cost to the patient. In fact, outpatient surgery centers typically deliver high qual-ity care for as much as a 40% savings over hospital based surgery.

Another major advantage to hav-ing surgery in an outpatient center is that orthopedic surgery centers specialize in one area. The doctors, nurses, and technologists working in a single specialty can maximize their skills and minimize errors.

Can I choose to have my outpatient procedure done in an orthopedic center?

Sure, provided that your physi-cian has privileges at such a center. The physicians of Georgia Bone and Joint believe in the quality care and continuous improvement embod-ied in single specialty orthopedic surgery centers. Years ago, we de-veloped the Summit Surgery Cen-ter to reflect and enhance the high quality care we strive to provide at Georgia Bone and Joint. In fact, we just celebrated our eleven year anni-versary at the Summit Healthplex in Newnan!

How can I be evaluated by a physi-cian at Georgia Bone and Joint?

Georgia Bone and Joint has offices in Newnan at The Summit Health-plex and in Peachtree City in the Fayette Medical Building at Shaker-ag. Call us in Newnan at 770-502-2175 or Peachtree City at 770-626-5340 or visit us on the web at http://www.gbandj.com.

For several Coweta County authors, this Christmas is extra special; they have been pub-lished for the first time. As members of the Carnegie Writers Exchange, they contributed stories to an anthology, The Christmas Gift: A Collection of Short Stories from the Carnegie Writers, Newnan, GA.

Holly Moulder, co-facilitator of the group that meets at the Carnegie Library, is a for-mer Coweta county school teacher. She has published two award-winning novels with her third title, Crystal City Lights, to be released in spring, 2013, by Blue Marlin Publications, New York. “We invite writers at all levels of the craft. We offer each other encouragement and critiques. Being a part of the Carnegie Writers has made me a better, more confident writer.”

“Four members of the group have published at least one novel,” said co-facilitator Swanee Ballman, president of Jawbone Publishing and award-winning author of six novels. “We’re an eclectic group, which makes for lively discus-sions. The opinions of everyone are respected, whether a novice at the craft or a seasoned writer. We realize that, regardless of how much we have written, we still need growth, and the writers’ exchange offers the opportunity to hone our skill.”

The Christmas Gift is the third anthology where a short story by local author Edwina Cowgill can be found. Cowgill, owner of Mon-arch Editing Services in Newnan, is working on her first non-fiction manuscript.

First-time published authors who are fea-tured in The Christmas Gift are Betty Bell Du-naway, Charles Bowen, Danae McBurney, and Sid Brown. Dunaway, who owns a real estate appraisal business, has recently begun her first

novel about life in Alabama, her home state. Bowen, retired from the banking industry, is working on several writing projects. McBur-ney’s short story is an excerpt from the rough draft of a novel she has been writing for several years. Brown, a former mechanical designer and law enforcement officer, is completing his first novel, Duncan’s Posse.

The Christmas Gift can be purchased at Scott’s Book Store.

The group meets bi-monthly at the Carnegie Library in Newnan. At each meeting, partici-pants either share something they have written or engage in a real-time writing assignment.

Also, members offer presentations in their ar-eas of expertise to spark writing ideas among the group. (For meeting times and dates, call the Carnegie at 770-683-1347 or go to www.newnancarnegie.com)

Charles High’s interest in coins started when he was just a teenager. In 2011, after retiring from 30 years service with Delta, Charles, along with his wife, Eileen, opened Township Coins and Collectibles in the Sharpsburg area. “We are re-sponding to the community’s need for a respect-able and reputable place to sell and purchase coins and currency, as well as giving the best prices for gold”, says Charles. And if you are new to collecting, you need not be intimidated. Charles and Eileen will help you learn and will actually show you the reference books on which they base their pricing. “You can leave our store knowing you received a fair deal”.

The history of coins is also of interest to the Highs. United States currency travels more and sees more of the country than most U.S. citi-zens. If coins could speak, what would they tell us? Over a period of a century or more, a coin could have been used to buy a loaf of bread, pay the doctor, or help purchase a horse – perhaps being held and used by thousands of people from one end of the country to the other.

So, if you have a question about buying or sell-ing coins or currency, or selling your gold, give Charles or Eileen a ring at 770-254-2727, or visit Township Coins and Collectibles at 3500 Hwy 34 East, Suite 3. You’ll be shopping with confi-dence at a locally owned and operated Coweta County Business.

It’s here again! Time to make the season merry! One of its greatest pleasures is in the preparation. Home is where our hearts and memo-ries return at the Holiday Season. Now is the time to decorate with lights, color, sparkle, and sound. Green represents eternal life; red says joy and love and warmth; blue denotes spiritual calm; white symboliz-es purity and winter’s snow. Gold and silver add sparkle and radiance. Light has long been associated with celebrations and festivals. Bells and special music add to the festive mood.

We don’t have to go over the budget to cre-ate a festive scene. Christmas tree trimmings can provide free greenery. Search your yard for inconspicuous limbs and foliages that could be cut. Bare branches found could be sprayed white or flocked with ‘snow’. Nandina berries are great for color. Leaves (such as magnolia) can be sprayed silver, gold, bronze, copper or even sprinkled with glitter after spray adhesive. Cranberries or kumquats can fill a clear glass container with or without water. Nuts or cones are best used dry in containers. The nuts and cones are lovely gilded in silver or gold. Ar-tificial fruits found at yard sales or thrift stores can be sprayed with ‘snow’. Real fruits (such as grapes) can be brushed with beaten egg whites and sprinkled with sugar. Make your own sugarplums. Cut your own ribbons from fabric with pinking shears. Plaid seems to be popu-lar this year.

Plant materials need to be hardened (conditioned) before using them. Soak greenery and leaves in a laundry tub or bathtub a few hours to overnight. Nandina berries hold up well! Greenery that holds up well for longer periods of time are: boxwood, camellia, holly, peris, eleagnus, ivy, yew, pine, juniper, cedar, magnolia, aspidistra, osmanthus, acuba, palm, pittosporum, mahonia, rosemary. Hydrangeas should have stem ends dipped in boiling water for 30 seconds and then placed in deep water to their necks. Poinsettias must have their cut stem ends seared in a flame (candle, match, lighter) each time the ends are cut. They can also be cleaned of all dirt and placed in baggies.

Plastic fast food containers, food jars, coat hangers, dry cleaning bags, and chicken wire are easy to find and free or inexpensive. Florist

wires, wooden picks, waterproof floral tape, hot glue guns and staplers are useful in arranging. Fabric dye is excellent for tinting dried materi-als or corn husks.

Plan your Holiday Theme from the front door, to the entry, to the dining table carried throughout the house. It might be White Christmas, Santa, angels, bells, sleighs, etc. Use restraint in the num-ber of arrangements and decorations for each room. Strive for simplicity and unity. Even some foods could repeat the colors and themes chosen. No money for expensive spic-es - simmer apple juice on the stove. A bowl of fresh apples or oranges with bits of green-ery tucked around is quick, easy, and can be eaten later. Keep candles away from plant materials and other flammable items. Never leave them unattended.

Imagination combined with yard and garden gifts will create lasting memories.

Happy

Holidays!

French Children, Bears and Binge Drinking Mean

it’s Christmas at Newnan Theatre Company

By Joan Doggrell

Newnan Theatre Company is opening the 2012 Christmas season with two charming Christ-mas plays for children and an adult parody of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

The double feature children’s show includes “Madeline’s Christmas,” adapted from the de-lightful children’s story by Ludwig Bemelmans, and “A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail,” based

on the stories by A.A. Milne with the script, mu-sic and lyrics by James W. Rodgers.

For adults who need an antidote to holiday sentimentality, Jeff Allen is directing “Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge,” by Christo-pher Durang.

The two-act children’s show opened on the Main Stage Friday evening December 7 and runs through the next two weekends, with both morning and afternoon shows each Sat-urday. “Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge” plays in the Black Box Theater at 8 pm on Thursdays, 10:30 pm Fridays, and 8 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Before each Saturday children’s show (Decem-ber 8 and 15), starting at 9:15 am, the Big Man with the white beard in the red suit will join

Madeline, Winnie-the-Pooh and some of their best friends for a special Christmas tea with songs, games, holiday goodies, and pictures with Santa, Madeline, Pooh, and other charac-ters. Tea with Santa is $15, or for $25 you can enjoy the tea AND see the 11:00 am show on the same day.

To purchase tickets, and for show dates and times, visit Newnan Theatre Company’s web site at http://newnantheatre.org or visit the box office before or after any performance. The the-ater is located in historic downtown Newnan at 24 First Avenue.

If you have questions regarding the content of any show, email Artistic Director Paul Conroy at [email protected].
