Every day we hear the word media, and what they are saying about this or that. A medium, as you know, is any form of communica-

tion that reaches the general public. The media, therefore, is simply the sum of the individual mediums. They include TV, internet, print, radio and so forth. The Coweta Shopper, for example, (and a good one at that!) is our form of printed communication that connects the citizens of our community with the products and services available here. I suppose these “announcements to the public” have existed throughout history, from smoke signals, to engraved stones displayed in the town square, right up to our modern, amazing internet. But the thing which influ-enced me most as a child was television.

In the early 1950’s, TV was just getting going good and folks were glued to the screen, just as we are to our monitors today. In Newnan, we re-

ceived three stations on about a 16” screen installed in a box about half the size of a refrigerator – black and white, of course. Around 1952, when I was but a wee knucklehead, one of my favorite shows was “The Woody Willow Show”, with host, Officer Don. Do you remember? Woody was sort of a cowboy type wooden marionette, playing alongside his girlfriend, Theresa Termite. It was a live show, produced in Atlanta, featuring about a dozen young boys and girls sitting on old apple crates and watching Woody perform. They played games (remember “ooey-gooey”) and watched old reruns of the Little Rascals. The show started in the late 40’s and was later called “The Popeye Club”. Every child dreamed of being on that show – being on real TV!

I suppose I should call this article “How I (almost) got my start in show business”, cause one day “I got the call”! I would be on live television, and as far as I was concerned, everyone on the planet would be watching The Woody Willow Show just as I stepped out in front of the cameras. A few other friends were going, too, and as I remember, we were a group from Miss Mae’s Kindergarten and would be accompanied by our moms. My mother and I told everyone we knew (or any stranger with a TV set) of my forthcoming appearance. As we entered the WSB-TV studios that afternoon, the mothers combed our hair and straight-ened our clothes. I was, of course, lookin’ good and sporting a bow tie, and my mother was ready to show me off. The moms were to sit on bleachers off camera while we were to sit on those apple crates – you know, the “Peanut Gallery”. Well, after all the preparation, all that talk, I froze like a statue and wouldn’t let go of my mom. I “chickened out” at the last possible moment and sat with her instead of my friends. My hopes and dreams of being a movie star, indeed my “start in show business”, would not be realized that afternoon. And as to my mother, I could only think, “Oh Lord, help me!. She went form being crest-fallen, to embarrassed, followed by sheer anger, and I knew I was about to “get the business”. About the time my tender backside was engaged between the sharp and powerful nails of her thumb and forefinger, I jumped up and hollered, “Ouch! You pinched my fanny!” “I did not!” was her loud reply. The camera men couldn’t help but laugh. Officer Don couldn’t keep a straight face, then all the kids started laughing, along with the moms. All but my mom. She was ready for World War III and the battle was being played out for everyone on the planet, including all of Newnan, to hear! But it was a quiet ride home.

So, I missed my big opportunity that day, but I did finally acquire an acceptable alternative writing the Publisher’s Page of The Coweta Shopper. Most would wonder what’s so great about that. The fact is, when I balanced my check book the other day, I realized I would be working until I am 95, so it might as well be something I really enjoy doing.

Joe

Our car (or cars) is near the top of the list of our most expensive, most essential, and most troublesome possessions. To many of us (usually us men) our car is also a status sym-bol and extension of our personality. Yet many of us do not know or even care to know much about its care and feeding, no less its safe and efficient operation. How it looks and how WE look driving it is often a more impor-tant consideration. Either that or we assume it will work flawlessly like an appliance, with no attention from us, because after all, we paid so much for it and we have so many more im-portant things to do.

But, consider this. Think of your car or truck as a 4000 pound weapon on wheels. Think of the energy it con-tains. 4000 pounds at 60 miles per hour, or even at 30 miles per hour. That’s a tremendous amount of pow-er. Then realize it is all under your control. You are the driver and its use or misuse is your responsibility, no one else’s. That means you are responsible for its use and misuse. It is tough and unfair (maybe even illegal) to blame anyone else. We have all seen the horrendous photos of car wrecks in which people have been killed or injured. Next time you see one, think about the person who survived or the person who didn’t. Think about the innocent victims and the effect on their lives of this trauma. I think all of us would agree that the avoidance of this kind of catastrophe, suffering and pain should be very im-portant to each and every one of us.

The proper and safe use of your vehicle is affected by many, many variables. Some of these are weath-

Car Care essentials Introduction …

er, road conditions, other drivers, the car’s mechanical condition, your physical and mental condition, knowl-edge of and compliance with driving rules and regulations, visibility, dis-tractions, and countless others. Ig-norance or disregard of any of these can lead to problems. And with that 4000 pound weapon on wheels, the consequences can be quite serious.

In upcoming columns, we will talk about some of the simple and inex-pensive things you as the owner, operator, or person responsible for the consequences of the use of this weapon can do (or have done for you) that will minimize some of the danger and dire consequences that go along with this weapon. We won’t get into vehicle dynamics, physics, and other scientific subjects. We’ll talk about some simple things you as a driver can do with very little cost, a small amount of learning, and a large amount of awareness.

I am referring to preventive mainte-nance, the kind that is mentioned in every Owner’s Manual or DVD. We’ll relate these discussions not to perfor-mance, or speed, or efficiency, or lon-gevity, but to safety. After all, you the operator are the person responsible for the well being not only of yourself but of your passengers, other drivers, innocent bystanders, and your big in-vestment. We expect to get from point A to point B without incident or harm. That only happens if the responsible person is truly responsible and uses this weapon in a knowledgeable and responsible manner. That responsible person is YOU and that 4000 pound weapon is YOUR CAR.

So, we’ll talk about keeping your weapon operating within the parame-ters for which it was designed, caring for one of your biggest investments, protecting your loved ones, eliminat-ing your liability for misuse or disuse of the weapon, using intelligence, high levels of skill, concern, aware-ness, and care to protect yourself and others from harm. Driving skills or lack thereof is one issue. Know-ing your limitations and the limita-tions of your vehicle are another. Be-ing aware of your surroundings and their possible effect on your driving experience is another. Keeping your vehicle in decent shape is a relatively easy and inexpensive task. You can do some of it yourself, or you can pay someone else to do it for you. We won’t get into anything heavy or dif-ficult or dirty, just a few simple checks that vehicle ownership entails. If you find a problem during one of these tasks, then it is your responsibility to get the problem corrected. That’s re-sponsible ownership. That’s common sense. My only desire is to convince you to assume the responsibility and do it or get it done.

So, sit down, buckle up, and pay attention. Here we go!

Since there’s not much gardening to do in Winter, it’s a good time to study arranging. It does provide a change from seed catalogues and tool shed chores. In the past I’ve written about plants to grow for arrang-ing, conditioning plants for designs, and flower arranging terms defined. Now I thought it might be helpful to suggest some tips on planning and improving design.

Do plan your design first - selecting the ap-propriate container and the right mechanics for the flowers and/or foliages you plan to use. Consider placement - the style and colors of the room and the height and size of furniture or other spots chosen. Does the shape and size of the place you want a design used best fit a tall vertical design, a low horizon design, a small arrangement, or perhaps a huge mass? Do you need to be able to see over the design (as at a seated meal)?

If you are arranging in front of a mirror, be sure to make the back as lovely and fin-ished as the front. Do collect your container/mechanical aids, well-conditioned plant ma-

terials, and arranging tools before you begin - just as you would assem-ble all the ingredients and equipment before beginning to cook. Select a container that will enhance (but not compete with) the flowers you plan to use. Generally, neutral colors (green, beige, gray, white, or brown) work well. Clear glass can be lovely with lilies or roses because of their smooth, elegant feeling. A white container should always have some white materials in the design for unity. All white flowers and a white container, on the other hand, can be tricky - add variegation, foliage, and tints and shades for va-riety, otherwise it could be monotonous. Gen-

erally, avoid shiny containers - they can be a bulls-eye and take away from the design. The size and weight of container to the plant ma-terials chosen is very important.

Think about the shape of your design. Will it be a symmetrical or an asymetrical one? What shape will work well with the plant ma-terials you have - triangle, oval, round, cres-cent, fan-shaped or modern creative? Will this be a line, line-mass, or mass design? Flowers and foliages chosen should be compatible with the design style as well as the room, occasion, and the container. A base can add weight to the con-tainer to achieve better balance. An accessory (where appropriate and carefully selected) can add interest to a design or help in establishing balance. Oasis (wet), sahara (dry), chicken wire (crumpled), needlepoint holders, lead strips, or waterproof floral tape can be used to secure the design style in the container.

8 Ways to Fight Memory Loss

Memory loss doesn’t have to be inevitable as we age. While 40 percent of seniors will experi-ence some type of memory decline, fortunately it’s something we can fight.

The Mayo Clinic has a list of eight things we can do to sharpen our brain.

Take care of any chronic conditions you 1. have, and follow your doctor’s advice.

Stay mentally active. Read a portion of the 2. newspaper you usually don’t see. Invest in a puzzle book. Volunteer in the community. (Offering to shelve books at the library can help with both mental and physical fitness.) Learn to play a new musical instrument. Ask the senior center to invest in one of the memory improvement/brain fitness com-puter programs, and use it often. (Studies have shown they work!) Dial the phone with your opposite hand. Learn new games or ac-tivities.

Stay physically active. Walking a total of 2 3. 1/2 hours a week will help keep the blood flowing to the brain.

Get organized. Declutter your home. Make 4. lists of things you need to do, and always keep the list in the same place. Keep your keys and other essentials in one location too.

Socialize. Look for opportunities to attend 5. events with friends. You’ll help to fight de-pression and stress at the same time.

Eat a healthy diet. Vegetables, whole grains, 6. fruits and low-fat proteins -- as well as plen-ty of water -- can help your brain function at its peak.

Concentrate on what you’re doing. You’ll 7. remember information better if it’s the only thing you’re thinking about.

Get plenty of sleep, or at least enough naps. 8. Even the brain needs to rest!

What To Look For On The Label(NAPS)—Making sure you and your family are

getting the nutrients you need doesn’t have to be confusing. What may be the best way to figure out if a food is good for you can actually be pretty easy—check out the Nutrition Facts Panel. Found on the side or back of a food package, it gives the details about the amount of calories, fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals found in the food.

How to Read A Food Label

When looking at the label, start with the number of servings per container. If it says there are two servings in the container but you plan on eating the whole thing, you need to multiply all the values listed on the label by two to find out what you’re really going to get.

Next, check out the calories. Is it the amount you want to eat? Your body needs calories for energy, but eating more than you need can lead to weight gain.

Look for lots of fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C and calcium. These nutrients will help you stay in good health and help reduce the risk of certain health problems, yet most Americans don’t get enough of

them.

In fact, the gap between how much fiber Americans should eat and how much they do eat is so big that experts now recommend people eat both fiber-rich and fiber-fortified foods. Foods that provide a good source of fiber should contain 10 percent or more of the Daily Value for fiber.

To find foods that have fiber, look for such ingredients as:

• Arabinoxylan

• Beta-glucan

• Carboxymethylcellulose

• Cellulose

• Chicory Root Fiber

• Fructo-oligosaccharides

• Galacto-oligosaccharides

• -Hydroxypropyl-Methylcellulose

• Inulin

• Methylcellulose

• Resistant maltodextrin

• Oligofructose

• Pectin

• Polydextrose

• Polyfructans

• Resistant starch.

It is important to eat a wide range of dietary fibers from different sources to get all the benefits that fiber can provide. In addition, you should try to limit saturated fat, trans fat and sodium.

Learn More

You can find more information about nutrition labels at www.fda.gov and further facts about fiber at

www.fiberfacts.org.

Check the labels of the foods you buy to be sure you’re getting enough fiber to meet your daily requirements.

These Tasty Truffles Make A Memorable Gift

(NAPSI)—These delicious no-bake bites make a lovely hostess gift all year long. Using just four ingredients that can be stored in a pantry, they can also be made quickly for entertaining in a pinch. The truffles are handmade with Biscoff Cook-ies and Biscoff Spread, a creamy spread made from the cookies, lending an irre-sistible caramelized flavor to them.

Biscoff Truffles½ cup semisweet or bittersweet • chocolate chips½ cup Biscoff Spread• 20 Biscoff Cookies• ½ cup powdered sugar•

Place chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at high about one minute. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Stir in spread until well combined; let stand.

Finely crush cookies in a food processor or in a heavy plastic bag with a rolling pin. Set aside two tablespoons of the crushed cookies; stir re-maining amount into chocolate mixture, mixing well. Chill in refrigerator 10 minutes, stirring once after five minutes. (Do not chill longer, as mix-ture will become stiff.)

Spoon heaping teaspoons of the mixture into mounds onto a waxed paper−lined tray. (If mixture is too wet, stir in 1 tablespoon cookie crumbs at a time.) Let stand at room temperature 20 minutes to “air dry.” Place powdered sugar in a small bowl. Pick up each teaspoon of the mixture and form into a ball. Place in bowl of sugar; use two forks to toss until well coated. Place in individual candy cups or on a serving plate. Store at room temperature. Makes about 2 dozen truffles.

Visit www.biscoff.com for more delicious recipes and to find a store that carries the cookies and spread in your area.

Better Health Clinical Research recently celebrated its 4th anniversary. Led by owner Dr. R. Charles Brownlow and Clinical Research Administrator Mary Kay Burden, CCRC, BHCR is now growing and expanding its clinical trial offer-ings.

Why consider participating in a clinical trial? If you have the condition under study, participation in a clinical trial is a great way to play a more active role in your healthcare, gain access to new treatments before they are widely available, and help others by contributing to medical research. Par-ticipants’ health and progress are closely monitored while they are in a study. Clinical trial costs are paid entirely by the Sponsor of the trial. Insurance providers are NOT billed for clinical trial costs, and all study-related care, including doc-tor exams, labs, and medication are provided to the partici-pant free of charge. Volunteers also receive stipends to com-pensate for their time and travel to our office.

Better Health Clinical Research is pleased to be able to offer investigational new treatments to the citizens of Coweta and surrounding counties while contributing to the advance-ment of medical science for the benefit of future generations. Trials are currently enrolling patients suffering from gout or chronic low back pain, and trials for management of uncon-trolled cancer pain and opioid-induced constipation will be starting soon. For more information or to find out if you are eligible to participate in one of our clinical trials, please call 770-252-7562 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

ROAD TO RECOVERYVolunteer Drivers Needed

If you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider becoming a volun-teer driver for The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. This volunteer-based program provides free transportation to cancer patients to and from their treatment lo-cations. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular cancer treat-ments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments.Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be will-ing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta County. The training is free. Requirements include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a ve-hicle that is in good working condition.

Join this meaningful program and make some-one’s life a little easier. You might find it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more info on becoming a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volunteer coordinator, Emily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

Grief, Guilt and – Comedy? NTC Stages Pulitzer Prize Winner “Rabbit Hole”

by Joan DoggrellIn keeping with their proud artistic tradition, Newnan Theatre Company once

again tackles a difficult subject head on. This time, it’s a family grieving over the loss of a child. David Lindsay-Abaire’s “Rabbit Hole” opens February 14 and runs through February 24. The play contains some mature language.

“Rabbit Hole” portrays a family that has lost a four-year-old child named Dan-ny, who was hit by a pick-up truck driven by a teenage boy. The death occurred eight months previously, and the family is struggling to work through the griev-ing process.

The characters include Danny’s mother Becca and her husband Howie, Bec-ca’s mother Nat, and her younger sister Izzy, who tosses in a complication by announcing that she is pregnant.

In the final act, Jason, the young man who accidentally killed Danny, comes to the home. In honor of Danny he has written a story about alternate realities – reached through “rabbit holes” in the universe – where Danny may be living out his life.

“Lindsay-Abaire has done an excellent job of portraying real-life reactions,” said Director Bert Lyons. “You would expect this to be a real downer of a play be-cause of the subject matter. But if you compare it to real life, and real family re-lations – you know that no matter what the situation, somebody’s going to crack a joke or make a remark, that’s – well – funny. And you’ll laugh. And somehow it lifts the spirit, although there are still tears.”

“Husband and wife are both grieving but completely differently, which causes communication problems within the marriage,” said Lyons. “The problems are not all resolved within this show, and will undoubtedly generate audience con-versation. A person may identify with one particular character at the beginning, but realize at the end of the play that they’ve never considered the situation from another person’s point of view. And that’s the thing I like – the play is open-ended. It doesn’t say everything turns out all right.”

Becca is played by Donna Provencher, Howie by Kevin McInturff, Izzy by Lof-ton Riser, Nat by Betty Mitchell, and Jason by Jason Abraham, a student at Northgate High School. They are a varied group coming from Newnan, Peachtree City and, in the case of Provencher and Riser, as far away as Columbus.

“I’m really proud of this cast,” said Lyons. “Even in our early rehearsals, they’ve already hit moments where I’ve felt – this is great. This is the tempo – this is a real family I’m watching. I even joked that this was better than Downton Abbey!”

“Rabbit Hole” is intelligent, it’s funny, and it’s moving,” added Lyons. “People who come out to see it will be glad they did.”

To purchase tickets, and for show dates and times, visit Newnan Theatre Com-pany’s web site at http://www.newnantheatre.org or visit the box office before or after any performance. The theater is located in historic downtown Newnan at 24 First Avenue.

If you have questions regarding the content of any show, email Artistic Direc-tor Paul Conroy at [email protected].

“Armchair Travelers” at The Carnegie Once a month, The Carnegie offers a travel program, “Armchair Trav-

elers”, as part of their adult/senior and student enrichment programs. Through the Armchair Traveler program, patrons are able to travel around the world from the comfort of their library chair. Last year alone, guest speakers presented programs that covered the globe with exotic destinations such as The Holy Lands, Madagascar, Japan, Greece, Ha-waii and Aruba.

To kick off a new year of travel, The Carnegie hosted guest speaker and student from Heritage Christian High School, Jesse Riggs.

Jesse had the special privilege of travelling with The Confucious Insti-tute, sponsored by Emory University, to China, visiting two major cities:

Beijing and Jilin, China. This is not the first time a program has been presented on China at The Carnegie, however, this program provided a unique, student, perspective for Carnegie patrons.

Jesse began to take course studies in Chinese his sophomore year of-fered at Heritage Christian. Through learning the language from instruc-tor, Elizabeth Kanode, of Chinese descent, he envisions possibilities in the future that may incorporate use of the language in business and ca-reer pursuits. He excelled in his class and was recommended to go with The Confucius Institute to China and was one of eleven students cho-sen in the State of Georgia. While in China, he continued his studies. He stayed at a local university in Jilin along with several other students selected from across the United States. While there for their two week stay, U.S. students were paired with local Chinese students. Through this opportunity, he was able to form friendships and learn more about the Chinese culture from students his own age.

The student travelers were also engaged in the visual arts, literary writ-ing, and the intricacies of Chinese dance. As part of their extracurricular activities, students visited many historic sites and parks with stops at the venues of the 2008 Olympics, The Great Wall, the Jilin Museum and the Forbidden City.

Civil War Discovery comes to Newnan Carnegie Feb. 28th

The University of Georgia’s Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library will showcase rare original letters, maps, documents, and more at the Newnan Carnegie on Thursday, February 28th, for a Civil War “discovery”.

Those in attendance are invited to bring their own family Civil War artifacts for a “show and tell” earlier at 4:30pm. According to Lauren Jones, President of the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation, “unlike the earlier Colonial and Native American discover-ies, family memorabilia from the more recent Civil War era can be found in many homes. This adds a new dimension to the evening and who knows what fascinating discovery may be launched from our own attendees!”

The distinguished Historian and Director Emeri-tus of the Hargrett, Mary Ellen Brooks, will lead the discussion aided by Chantel Dunham, Director of Development, UGA Libraries, UGA Press and The Georgia Review. Brooks plans to give a brief, poi-gnant presentation and comparison from the diaries of two soldiers, one Union, one Confederate. She will also map Sherman’s march through Georgia pull-ing relevant materials from the discovery tables to corroborate different events. Among the many trea-sures to review, special highlights of the discovery will be maps, printed on muslin for washability, of General Sherman’s invasion of Georgia; two letters and one Special Order signed by Robert E. Lee; and an 1864-65 diary detailing Sherman’s March through Georgia from the Union perspective.

The series will begin at 4:30pm with attendee “show and tell”, orientation at 5:15pm, and guests will be seated at discovery tables at 5:30pm. Seating is limited and reservations must be made in advance by signing up at the Carnegie or calling 770-683-1347. The Newnan Carnegie Library is located at 1 LaGrange Street in historic downtown Newnan. For further information, visit www.newnanclf.com.
