The celebration of Christmas has now come and gone for yet another year. Children are playing with toys
and electronic games, and the older ones are enjoying their new clothes and cashing in the gift cards which are now so desirable. Others are waiting for the yearly after-Christmas sales which are so popular with both buyers and sellers. But there is one more item left on our agendas – the obligatory “New year’s Resolutions”. It seems that most of us resolve to do this or that in the coming year so that life will be much
better. However, there is sometimes not quite enough “Resolve” in our plans to carry us through to success. Are we really setting a goal, or just wishing?
Author Brian Tracy, says it this way: “Our ability to set goals, make plans, and take action on them, determines the course of our lives”. A goal (or reso-lution) without a plan for its accomplishment, within a specific time limit, is nothing more than a wish. You’ve probably heard the saying, “If we keep doing things the same way, we will continue to get the same results”. I, for one, want to get different results with some of my wishes this next year, and perhaps you do too, so let’s try this together.
A goal must be clear and it must be in writing
A goal must have a specific, organized plan for its accomplishment
A goal must have a time set for it’s completion
There is one other ingredient which must be mixed into the formula. Unless action is taken at the proper time, the above is no more than a slogan to be framed and hung on the wall with little or no results.
Let’s try using this approach in 2011. We are not guaranteed to fully reach all our goals this way, however, we will certainly have a much better chance. We can drift toward what we want to accomplish, or we can paddle in a pre-determined direction. I’m going shopping for a paddle next week, what about you?
As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

Practice fire safety - watch what you heat.
~Author Unknown
Citizens should be aware of the dangers of using heat lamps too close to combustible materials. You need to read, understand and follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions when using heat lamps or any other type of heating appliance. It is safer to bring pets inside during cold weather than to rely on a heat lamp or other portable heating devices to keep them warm outside.
Also everyone needs to make sure they have work-ing smoke detectors in their home and to have a home fire escape plan with a meeting place and to practice their home escape plan with all family members. Also if you have gas appli-ances, a wood burn-ing stove or fireplace a carbon monoxide
detector is recommended.

In her introduc-tion to the book, Dove said, “Trethewey eschews the Polaroid instant, choosing to render the unsuspecting yearnings and tremulous hopes that accompany our most private thoughts—reclaiming for us that interior life where the true self flourishes and to which we re-turn, in solitary reverie, for strength.”

Legal Briefs:
Bill Stemberger
Anyone who has ever watched a police drama such as “Law & Order” has heard these words: “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you.” These words are known as your Miranda warning and originated from the case of Miranda vs. Arizona. What most people don’t know is the story of Miranda and why these words are a part of our American culture.
In 1963 Ernesto Miranda was arrested in Phoenix as a suspect for a kidnap-ping. The police questioned him. Miranda admitted to the crime orally and in writing. He did not know he had no obligation to speak to police without a lawyer, or at all. At trial, his attorney objected to the use of the statements. Miranda was convicted and his statements were part of the evidence. In 1966 his case reached the United States Supreme Court. The Supreme Court stated that his 5th and 6th Amendment Rights were violated and overturned his con-viction.
This warning’s origin lies in the 5th Amendment, which says that the Gov-ernment may not compel any person to incriminate themselves. The relevant portion follows: “no person shall … be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law …” The 6th Amendment addresses many subjects including speedy trials, jury trials, location of trial, and cross-examination of witnesses. The 6th Amendment also includes a right to an attorney: “In all criminal pros-ecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right … to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.”
However, contrary to common belief, the Miranda warning doesn’t confer rights: it simply reminds arrestees of the rights already granted to them by the Constitution. Also, television police dramas have led people to believe that be-fore the police may interrogate or arrest a subject, the Miranda warning must be given. That just isn’t the case. Neither arrest alone nor interrogation alone (if there has been no arrest) requires the warning to be given. Miranda applies only to in-custody questioning. A statement made to police by a subject not in custody is not subject to Miranda. Also, the failure to give a Miranda warning does not result in the case being dismissed. It only results in the inability of the police to use a confession in evidence against the accused.
And what did happen to Ernesto Miranda? After the Supreme Court over-turned his conviction, he did not go free. In a new trial he was found guilty without his statements used as evidence.

Today’s Real Estate Market ~Price War and Beauty Contest!
By Nan Johnston Southern Staging & Redesign
The latest predictions of the upcoming housing mar-
ket are bleak, to say the least! That being said, buyers
are out there. How are you going to attract them to your
house over the thousands of others on the market?
A well-priced, well-presented home will still attract
buyers. Even in this troubled market, some houses in
our area have sold quickly and at close to the asking
price. If you are not the best looking house at the best
price, you are going to have to wait to sell.
Every listing is in a price war and a beauty contest.

What does your garden look like in winter? Does it have color, pat-
tern, texture, and interest? This is the perfect time of year to survey
the landscape and make plans for the coming Spring and Summer. It’s
also the perfect time to see the “bones” of your garden. The hardscap-
ing (fences, walls, arbors, etc.),
and trees, shrubs and water
features are clearly visible now.
Think of adding plantings for
winter interest.
The evergreen trees are so im-
portant now. Magnolia, Spruce,
Pine, Deodar Cedar, Leyland
Cypress and other evergreens
also have interesting pods and
cones as well as beautiful green
foliage. River Birch, Sycamore, and Crepe Myrtle have lovely exfoliat-
ing bark. Holly and Dogwood have great berries; so do viburnums and
nandina. Camellias offer a wide variety of blooms. Edgeworthia is a
fragrant winter must-have.
The dried blooms of Oakleaf
and Pee Gee Hydrangeas
look great, as well as the
dried grasses and sedum.
Shrubs that are evergreen
will add additional color
and texture. Aucuba, Yew,
Juniper, Lecothoe, Box-
wood, Anise, Gardenia and Osmanthus are excellent choices.
Fragrant blooming Winter Jasmine is such a delight on a bleak winter
day. A variety of Hellebores bloom in the winter. Annuals such as pan-
sies, violas, cabbage, and kale add color and texture. Rosemary adds
texture, fragrance and tiny blooms and evergreen color. Some nandi-
nas have wonderful bronze-red foliage. Harry Lauder’s walking stick is
a wonderful curving, twisting small tree. Variagated plants add color
and pattern (Yucca, Osman-
thus, Ivy, Acuba and Elae-
agnus).
Topiaries, statues, bird baths,
water features, fountains,
benches, birdhouses – all are
possibilities for adding inter-
est to the winter garden.
Make a plan. Add or eliminate
with a purpose. Visit plant nurseries for ideas and information.

Butcher, Coweta County Extension Coordinator and Agent, will be the guest speaker for the January 2011 Backyard Association. Stepha-nie graduated from the
University of Georgia with a Bachelors Degree in Animal and Dairy Science and a Masters Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. Since join-ing Coweta County Extension in 2005, she has provided the community with a variety of educational programs.
Most of us enjoy watching wildlife in their native habitats. However, when wildlife starts encroaching upon our habitat it generally becomes a problem. Have you experienced squirrels in your attic, armadillos in your landscape, snakes in your basement or other nuisance wildlife trying to move into your space? If you want to learn more about how to control and discourage these animals, plan to join us on Tuesday, January 11th as Stephanie explains why they invade our space and how they can be controlled.
The Backyard Association is an educational program sponsored by the Coweta County Master Gardeners. The presentations are free to the pub-lic and are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. This month’s presentation will be held at the Asa M. 20 years of Green Tradition Continues With Christmas Tree
RecyclingGet your home back in order after
Christmas the easy and green way by re-cycling your live tree.
Keep Georgia Beautiful, The Home De-pot, The Davey Tree Company, 11-Alive, Earth911.com and Ferry-Morse Seed Co. have “chipped” in to sponsor the 2011 Bring One for the Chipper event.
The 20th year of the Bring One for the Chipper event invites Georgia residents to bring their trees to local drop-off centers. You can bring your tree to the recre-ation facility on Temple Avenue (the Old Fairgrounds) on the official “Bring One for the Chipper” day - January 8, 2011 from 9 am - 4 pm OR in Coweta County you can bring your tree to any of the county compactor sites from December 26, 3010 through January 11, 2011.
Check the hours of the 12 Coweta County compactors sites on the county website at http://www.coweta.ga.us/Index.aspx?page=368 - or just use the link from the home page.
According to the National Christmas Tree Association (www.realchristmastrees.org) 98% of real Christmas trees are grown on farms throughout all 50 states and Canada. Real trees are a renewable, recyclable resource while artificial trees con-tain non-biodegradable plastics usually manufactured in China. On average, for each tree harvested, three seedlings are planted in its place. Chipper trees will be recycled into mulch for playgrounds, public beautification projects, wildlife habitat and homeowner landscaping projects. Mulched landscapes help absorb runoff and prevent erosion during times of heavy rainfall.
Event sponsors are proud to offer a token of appreciation for Georgia citizens that participate in the January 8th “Chipper” event. Coweta County 4-Hers will help distribute free vegetable seed packets for “treecycling” citizens. It’s a great oppor-tunity to plant a container garden at home or with your children, or save them for community or school gardening projects.
