Well, the county fair is in town this week, and depend-ing on how you look at it, you can’t wait to get there, or

you may just want to leave town for the week. I hope you go and have a great time! There are rides which are appropriate for small children as well as those “scary” things that turn you upside down and sideways fifty feet off the ground. Ex-hibits include cows, sheep, chickens, ducks and other “rare” species not normally seen by city dwellers. There are trac-tors, automobiles, remote control airplanes, fire trucks and other items of interest on display throughout the grounds. And don’t forget those Teddy Bears and prizes which are so “easy” to win! If you’re young, you will probably go and en-

joy the heck out of it. If you’re old, perhaps you’ll go, too, even if just to walk around and rekindle some old memories.

The Kiwanis club has sponsored the local fair for as long as I can remember – I believe it started in 1948. “In 1971”, says Allyn Bell, “We made $5,000 which we gave to local Coweta County charities.” In 1988, when I was Kiwanis president, we were able to give away about $32,000, then an unheard of amount for a civic club to give. Between forty and fifty thousand people may have visited the fair this year, spending at least twenty dollars each. “That’s a million dollars!” Although a lot of this money leaves town with the carnival, Kiwanis will make a sizable sum, most of which is put right back into the good works of our community. It all started with the Newnan Kiwanis Club, however, there are several Kiwanis Clubs now in our Coweta County which share in the work and the giving. It takes a lot of volunteer help to serve that many folks!

But the young people, who are the ones really enjoying the fair, are not really thinking of the logistics of opera-tion, or the money it gives to the community. They’re there just to have a great time with their friends and family. As I write this article, I can still remember as a child the smell of the cotton candy, the sounds of the rides, the lights and music, and the “screams of joy” coming from exited people on exhilarating rides. It was a big deal in those times and I looked forward to it ev-ery year. Later, I was able to enjoy it with my own chil-dren, who now take their children. I suppose the fun could go on for generations.

Although there are always some downsides to any event with that many people, our fair is a safe, well run event which provides a great deal of joy, as well as funding many of the charitable organizations here – at least $1,000,000.00 just in the past ten years. “Wow!” So, if you haven’t tried it, do so this year. If you have, you know you’ll be continuing a tradition of having fun while helping fund worthy projects in our community

It MattersEverything on our planet is interconnected and delicately balanced. Our

world is constantly being changed, for better or worse, by the decisions we make individually and collectively. Those choices affect the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat; as well as all of the plants, animals, and insects. What we do really does matter now and in the future.

Water pollution, soil con-tamination, air pollution, and climate changes are altering our environment. Many important habitats have been lost or changed. Pesticides, fertilizers, animal waste runoff, in-dustrial discharges, polluted storm water runoff and chemi-cals (such as synthetic estrogen, etc.) have harmed our en-vironment. Animals and insects have experienced altered reproductive systems, birth defects, compromised immune systems, genetic changes and many deaths. Humans are also adversely affected by these problems. Insect control, crop pollination, food sources, hunting and fishing, and drinking water are jeopardized. Our own immune systems, genetics, reproductive systems and our health are at risk.

Two examples of our interconnectedness are bees and frogs. Lately, both have been dying at alarming rates. Bees pollinate more than 50% of our crops in Georgia. Fruit-bearing trees, berry-producing plants, and most vegetables need bees for pollination. In recent years, the United States has lost more than 50% of its honeybee colonies to disease, pollution, pesticides, and loss of habitat. That’s not all. Frog populations, world-wide, have been rapidly declining. Frogs eat vast amounts of insects. They are important to scientific research and the development of new medical treatments for humans. An amphibian fungus (which needs both water and a host) is one of the major causes of these losses. Fish, snakes, birds, and insects; as well as water eco-systems are suffering from the loss of the tadpoles, frogs and amphibians. In Georgia, Gopher frogs have lost 97% of their habitat which also adversely affects the Gopher Tortoise (which shares its burrows). The Atlanta Botanical Garden is helping these and some 30 total species of amphibians by providing breeding and habitat. The Nature Conservancy has provided 2,000 acres of protected habitat. More help is needed.

What can we do? We can conserve, repurpose, recycle, and think “Green”. We can recognize the importance of our National and State parks as protected habitats. It is vital that families and individuals can continue to be able to afford large tracts of land for farms and ranches. These large tracts help provide wildlife refuges, protected wildlife corridors, and protected wetlands for habitat. Conserva-tion easements on private lands are one way to do this. These large undevel-oped areas also help to clean the air and recharge groundwater.

We can teach future generations to avoid the mistakes we have made. We can vote for elected officials who are sensitive to and responsive to these is-sues.

One environmental advocate’s perspective on these issues is Erin Brock-ovich’s newest project “Last Call at the Oasis”.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital 5th Annual Autumn Chase

The Wellness Center at Piedmont Newnan Hospital will host the fifth annual Autumn Chase on Saturday, October 27 at Newnan Utilities’ Carl Miller Park in Newnan, Ga.

The Autumn Chase Trail Race, which supports the Wellness Center’s senior citizen and community pro-grams, consists of a 15k (9 miles) and 5k (3.2 miles) race beginning at 8 a.m. and a one-mile fun run start-ing at 9:30 a.m.

Those interested in supporting the event but not participating in the races will enjoy activities for the entire family, including face painting, food, Kids Castle park, great prizes and more.

Registration details: $25 before October 20; $30 for late registrations received after October 22. Kids 12 and under can participate for $8. Phantom Runner registration fee is $20. Participants may register online at piedmont.org/newnanwellnesscenter or at the Well-ness Center of Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Awards will be given to overall winners (male and female) and first, second and third place finishers in all age groups.

Wild Animals Pose Threat to Pets

DEAR PAW’S COR-NER: A number of cats in our area disappeared this spring and summer, and I noticed the rabbits that used to plague our garden don’t come as frequently. A neighbor told me he saw a coyote crossing the street just before dawn recently, and I suspect it is the cause of many of these disappearances. Please warn your readers they need to protect their pets as wild animals are encroaching on well-pop-ulated neighborhoods. -- Pat C., Weston, Mass.

DEAR PAT: That’s a very good point! As wild crea-tures lose more and more of their natural habitats, they are being seen much more frequently in the suburbs and even in urban areas. This goes beyond nuisance animals like rac-coons and skunks: Black bears frequently wander into back yards in central Florida, and residents in urban Allston, Mass., are sometimes confronted by wild turkeys foraging along city streets. And coyotes and cougars have been reported in subur-ban neighborhoods in many parts of the United States.

Wild animals present a lot of risk to pets (as well as humans). Besides the threat of contracting rabies or other diseases, some predators find smaller pets to be easy, tasty prey.

Keep cats and small dogs indoors at night. If wild animals have been reported in your area, don’t let your pet out unaccompanied or off a leash, even during the day when no danger is apparent. Keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date.

If you have pets, like rabbits, that are kept outside, reinforce and strengthen pro-tective fencing around their cages.

Cancer Wellness at Piedmont is now available in Newnan. Cancer Wellness offers free, comprehensive services and programs to anyone affected by cancer at any phase in his or her cancer journey, regardless of whether or not they are a Piedmont patient. Below you’ll find the class schedule for Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Newnan Hospital as well as some informa-tion about the new patient navigator Stephanie Martin, RN, whose primary responsibility will be to guide can-cer patients through their continuum of care.

Caring for an aging parent or relative is one of the most stressful and challenging roles an individual will assume says gerontologist and elder care advi-sor Ester Koch. One out of four US workers is cur-rently responsible for caring for an aging parent and are forced to choose between doing their family duty or doing their job. In addition persons reaching the age 65 have an average life expectancy of another 19 years for females and 17 years for males. With this said many of us (25%) must make the decision of when is homecare needed?

Getting a “care assessment” is the best way to determine when an elder needs home care services. The following are some examples of a care assess-ment:

Activities of Daily Living (ADL)These are the basic tasks involved in personal

care and household work. How would you rate your loved one’s ability to:

n Do housework, laundry, shopping and cooking

n Maintain personal care, such as bathing, dressing and using the toilet

n Manage medical appointments and medications

n Handle personal finances and legal issues

Physical Health Considerations

Planning for home care also involves an assess-ment of health issues affecting both physical and mental health.

n Mobility: the ability to safely move around one’s own home and neighborhood is often compro-mised with advanced age

n Vision: vision impairment is common amongthe elderly and often leads to reduced social interaction and quality of life, depression and injuries from falls. In many cases elders do not report their vision problems, vision screening is recommended

n Hearing: hearing deficits are also common among older adults and can affect quality of life.

Mental Health ConsiderationsAssessing the mental health of the elderly can be

challenging. The line between memory problems that naturally occur with aging and memory prob-lems that occur in early stages of dementia and or Alzheimer’s can be hard to distinguish.

If an elder:

n Seems more confused than usual

n Has trouble completing daily routines

n Has difficulty keeping track of daily medications, house keys or other personal items

Signs of depression are also difficult to sort out:

n Low energy

n Loss of appetite

n Lack of interest in others

These maybe signs of cognitive impairment

Nutrition Considerations

Healthy eating is a challenge for all of us, and el-ders may have additional issues that make healthy eating even harder; poor health, difficulty shopping or cooking, food insecurity (hoarding), loneliness or depression. Nutrition can be a major issue for elders:

n Is the elder getting the right kinds and amount of food to meet daily health requirements

n Is the elder capable of shopping for the right foods and preparing them

n Is the elder eating the food he or she prepares of that is prepared for him or her

Temple Avenue Recreation Complex Gym Closed For Repairs

The gym at the Temple Avenue Recreation Complex will be closed for roof repairs from September 4 -28 and will reopen on October 1. The roof repairs will also shut down the Temple Avenue weight room.

Preventing Football InjuriesBy Michael Cushing, MD

Football is one of the most popular sports and leads all other sports in the number of injuries sustained. An estimated 920,000 people are treated annually in hospitals, doctor’s offices and clinics for football related injuries. Sprains and strains account for 30% of injuries, broken bones followed with 22%. While only 1% of in-juries were concussions, this type of injury can be serious. Repeat injuries, particularly to the head, are the most serious threat to life.

Common Injuries to Football Players

m Traumatic: Knee injuries are most com-mon, especially those to the anterior and pos-terior cruciate ligaments (ACL/PCL) and to the meniscus. Shoulder injuries are also quite com-mon. This can involve injuries to the labrum as seen in shoulder dislocations, or involve injuries to the AC joint (AC dislocations). Ankle sprains are common as well.

m Concussions: A concussion is a change in mental state due to a trau-matic impact. The signs of a concussion include headache (most common), dizziness, nausea, loss of balance, numbness and tingling and blurry vision. The athlete should return to play only when clearance is granted by a physi-cian.

m Heat Injuries: These usually occur in August due to the high temps and humidity. Excessive sweating depletes the body of salt and water. Early symptoms include painful cramping of major muscle groups, profuse sweat-ing and weakness. Heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke when the body’s temperature regulation fails. The affected individual becomes lethar-gic, confused, the skin stops sweating. This is life threatening and emer-gency medical attention is necessary.

Tips for players to reduce football related injuries

Perform proper warm up and cool down routines1.

Hydrate adequately, stay active during summer break to prepare to 2. return to sports in the fall

Choose equipment carefully, always be sure it is properly fitted and 3. wear all equipment, even when practicing

Make sure playing surface is free of debris, rocks, holes etc.4.

Limit blocking and tackling drills during practice, always tackle 5. with head up and do not lead with your helmet.

Always check with a physician after an injury to make sure it is safe 6. to return to play.
