The Cove School is proud to offer a comprehensive summer school program. Classes will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. School will be closed on Friday, July 4.

Basic academic courses are offered in the morning. (Refer to registration form). Electives and the majority of specialized in-struction are offered in the afternoon.

Summer school at The Cove School is a unique experience for students with learning disabilities. Students at Cove feel safe and supported. Students get what they need to learn, and are accepted for who they are.

Summer school at Cove meets a variety of student needs. Some students need to maintain skills previously learned in a variety of subjects. Others need remediation in a particular subject. High school students may need additional credits. Still others may at-tend because of a requirement by their school district. Whatever the reason, The Cove School meets the needs of the individual student by tailoring a schedule for each child. All classes have a maximum of ten students.

Students may attend for one, two, or all three morning classes. Attending classes in the afternoon only is also an option. Full day attendance combines the academics of the morning with integrat-ed activities in the afternoon. High school students must take a final exam and complete all assignments in order to receive credit for a class.

High School students will receive .25 credit for the elective they select if they attend 27 of the 30 days of instruction.

Cove also offers a multisensory ap-proach to reading during the afternoon. Students are taught how their mouths look, feel and move when producing letter sounds and combinations of letters. This strategy helps them self-correct when errors are made during reading. The skill is also effective in correcting spelling errors.

Students will also be taught to cre-ate meaningful mental images while reading. These mental images become mental movies, filled with color and action. This crucial strategy develops

naturally for some. For others, visualiz-ing needs to be systematically taught to aid in reading comprehension, critical thinking, and language development.

Private remediation in all academic courses is available as well as individual speech/language therapy and occupational therapy.

Class size will be kept small to maximize learning. Sign up early to reserve a place for your child.

Acceptance is pending approval of Dr. Johnstone.
