Through the Eyes
of Faith
“Sticks and stones
may break my bones
but, words will never hurt
me.”
When I was but a child I learned the above
phrase as a witty retort to those who called
me names. Calling someone names was a
fairly popular pastime in my elementary
school. Because my hair was always very
short, and my ears stuck out a bit, the
insult of choice used against me generally
had to do with my prominent ears. Others
were insulted because they were short or
fat or had a speech impediment. My
recollection is that most of the insults had
to do with the physical appearance or
characteristics of classmates. When
confronted with such personal barbs I was
instructed to reply, “sticks and stones may
break my bones, but words will never
hurt me.”
It wasn’t true.
Words do hurt. The hurt from words can
linger much longer than it takes a broken
bone to heal. What we say matters. The
way we choose to speak matters.
The author of the Letter of James wrote,
“5……The tongue is a small member,
yet it boasts of great exploits. How
great a forest is set ablaze by a small
fire! 6And the tongue is a fire. The
tongue is placed among our mem-
bers as a world of iniquity; it stains
the whole body, sets on fire the cy-
cle of nature, and is itself set on fire
by hell.” – James 3:5,6
What we say and how we choose to say it
matters. Words matter. The writer of the
letter to the Ephesians says this, “Let no
evil talk come out of your mouths,
but only what is useful for building

Deck the Halls! Let’s Decorate for Advent

Hanging of the Greens Sunday, December 3
The annual observance of the Hanging
of the Greens will be during morning worship
on the First Sunday of Advent. During this
special service, we will hang Chrismons
on the tree, hang wreaths, decorate with
greenery and begin celebrating the of the
season of Advent.
up, as there is need, so that your words
may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29.
So, it is that we are called to use our words for
building up, and not tearing down. We are
called to use words that heal, and give life.
“Christ, the blessed One, gives to all,
wonderful words of life; Beautiful words,
wonderful words, wonderful words
of life.”
Words are not benign. They have intent. They
have meaning. They can build up or they can
tear down. The words we use and the way we
use them tell a story about us; about our
character. The way we use our words are clear
signals to those around us about the essence
of who we are.
Are we building up, or are we setting the forest
ablaze? Are we speaking truth, compassion,
kindness, empathy or are we accusing, dividing,
belittling, and attempting to subdue?
Words are powerful. They have meaning. To
hurt or to heal? What words will we choose?
Peace Be With You,
Rev. Jerry

Shawna Mitchell,
Children’s Ministry
Coordinator I am going on a vacation. Yup. I’ve said
it. By the time you read this, I will have
boarded a plane bound for Cancun,
Mexico. The first time Scott and I have
been on an adult’s only vacation in over
10 years. My children are mourning
being left behind. My husband is beyond
excited and nervous with details all
wrapped into one. My nerves are on
edge with what has been done and isn’t
done. And in the end, it doesn’t make
any difference. There is a peaceful Eden
waiting on me.
As I sit here on the night before I am to
embark on a journey of relaxation, calmness
and peace, I can’t help but feel worry. I want
no one to miss me when I am gone. “What if
the planner doesn’t get signed or he arrives
late to practice?” I want no one to be
inconvenienced or confused. “What if she
forgets about rehearsal and slows the group
down because I wasn’t there to remind her
to get there on time?” I want no one to be
put out that we are not here in the roles and
responsibilities that the two of us carry.
“What if they don’t follow the tightly held
schedule we created to keep the world
spinning round?” As if the world will end
without the two of us pushing it? Really now.
Isn’t that how we as humans often view
ourselves? We work ourselves silly with
worry and confusion because we are
convinced no one else can do the job we
were put on Earth to do. As adults, we go
so fast and get so busy that we miss the
opportunities to just breathe. As parents, we
push and we rush and go through season
after season, and the only thing we end up
seeing closely is that our kiddos have grown
up in what feels like overnight. It seems all
so silly when you look closer.
Tonight, my kiddos wanted to snuggle
longer. Tonight, they wanted to look at me
while I talked. Tonight, they wanted to know
all the details of our trip to the ocean, where
will we eat, what will we wear, what will we
see? They wanted to hear about the details.
We wanted to share the light of excitement
with them. We want them to look forward to
moments like this with their families when
they grow older.
Our journey on Earth is a preparation for the
glorious Eden that follows. We need to
pause to reflect. We ought to want to be told
of what heaven might be like. We need to
remember those who went ahead of us to
prepare the way for us on the path to our
heaven beyond. With our families, we want
them to have those images that faith, that
always forever future in their mind’s eye, so
that when the days get harried and hard,
they have that beautiful calmness to look
forward to. We want to pray for peace in our
days so that we may create heaven here
on Earth while we imagine the potential for
brilliance beyond.
Be that peace. Be that light. Be that stillness.
Be that calm. I pray these for you as I pray
them for me. Pray these for our youth and
families, and as they pray for another. Pray
these for our overworked, overburdened,
over taxed brothers and sisters. Pray these
for our leaders, and our neighbors. As you
embark on another day toward a journey of
relaxation, calmness, and peace turn your
face to the sun and be. Just breathe.
One hundred years from now,
It won't matter what car I drove,
What kind of house I lived in,
How much I had in my bank account,
Nor what my clothes looked like,
But, the world may be a little better
Because I was important in the life of
a child.
Full Funding for the Ministry of First Christian
Fully funding the ministries of First Christian
Church is a mission priority for 2017 and
beyond.
The fall season begins our congregational
planning for 2018: Nominations for
leadership have been received, the Budget
for 2018 has been approved by the
Administrative Board, and Board officers for
the next year have been elected.
2018 Board Officers Chairperson -- Jo Ellen Reed
Vice Chairperson -- Blanton Coates Treasurer -- Anne Baldwin
Board Secretary -- Ketsy Fields
Fully funding the ministries of FCC is a
priority for now and in the years to come.
It is the privilege of every member of the
congregation to move our ministry toward
full funding.
Full funding includes the operational
budget of the church; the day to day work
of being church in Winchester. From the
organ to the lights in the bathrooms;
spring, winter, summer and fall - electricity
allows us to be church any day of the
week around the year. In addition, in the
next few weeks exterior painting on the
church building will be completed. Day to
day funding also includes those who come
to our door seeking aid, our involvement
with local organizations, and the funding
of our mission partners in Clark County
and beyond. Fully funding the mission of
the church means we can achieve the
outreach goals we have set for ourselves
and we can worship together each week.
Full funding includes the Permanent Fund
which is invested with the Christian
Church Foundation. Our congregation has
approximately $67,000 invested with CCF.
Currently the interest received is reinvest-
ed, but the goal is to have the Fund reach
$4,000,000 that would provide interest for
building maintenance and expansion;
ministries we have yet to dream of, and
a hopeful future for the congregation.
Full funding for the Permanent Fund
could provide a stability that lasts for
generations to come.
As 2017 moves toward an end and 2018
opens before us, please consider
prayerfully your part in fully funding the
ministry of First Christian Church, through
weekly giving and by making a gift to the
Permanent Fund. Thank you for all that
you do each week to preserve and expand
the efforts of the Gospel through FCC.

Church Garden Ministry
Our church garden ministry for PLANT A ROW FOR THE HUNGRY has been put to bed for the season.
The church garden potato patch was har-vested on July 10. There were 104 pounds harvested and we had planted 4 pounds!
Even though there were some pitfalls with our second veggie harvest, we raised over 63 (40 & 23) pounds of green beans from 4 ounces of seed!
All veggies from the church's garden were donated to the Robert & Gillie Frye Memorial Food Pantry of the Clark Co. Community Services Center.

Statement of Identity We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented
world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s
Table as God has welcomed us. If we are who we profess to be, then we
must do as the Lord directs. Matthew 22:9 says “Go therefore into the
main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.” There is
room at the Lord’s Table for all God’s children. Let us come together to celebrate
the bread of heaven.
