NATURAL RESOURCES OF SANTA CRUZ COUNTY

Santa Cruz County is located at the north end of the Monterey Bay,

along the central coast of California. The County extends from the

redwood-forested mountains to rolling farmlands and wetland

sloughs, with miles of beaches along the Pacific Coast.

Santa Cruz is the gateway to the Monterey Bay National Marine

Sanctuary. The County has 29 miles of beaches and includes six

state parks and six state beaches. The State of California owns and

maintains 42,334 acres of parks in the coastal and mountainous

areas of Santa Cruz County. The County maintains an additional

1,400 acres of parks, and numerous parks are also found within the

cities.

The area is well-known for watersports such as sailing, surfing,

fishing, diving, kayaking, and viewing marine mammals. Other

popular outdoor sports include hiking, cycling, camping, rock

climbing, skateboarding, birding and butterfly watching.

COVER PHOTO

Petals open in a floral sun-salutation, the California Poppy, adopted

as the official California state flower in 1903, is a common and

splendid sight on the rolling, springtime hills, meadows and dunes

of Santa Cruz County.

The poppy adorns itself in a lively variety of foliage and petal

colorations depending on the composition and quality of the earth it

takes root in and Santa Cruz County has abundant opportunities for

hikes and drives to see California Poppies in all their golden glory.

The rich coastal meadow soil of Santa Cruz County produces lush

clumps of poppies with dark orange petals and green leaves which

can be viewed on a drive or walk through then undulating hills of

Davenport or on a hike on Wilder Ranch State Park’s Bluff Trail.

The rare ecosystem of the Santa Cruz Sandhills at Quail Hollow

Ranch County Park is dotted with jewel-like yellow California

Poppies with sparing foliage ranging from sage green to pink. To

see the sandhill poppies a reservation is required for one of only a

few annual hikes into the habitat.

While you should not pick California Poppies, and can even be fined

for doing so, on property that doesn’t belong to you, the blossoms

and leaves of California Poppy, when steeped in hot water, may

produce a pleasantly relaxing tea.
