DESIGNFAMILY-CENTRED INTERIOR DESIGN HAS THE POWER TO TURN

A HOUSE INTO A HOME AND PROFESSIONALSCAN MAKE A VISION COME TO LIFE MORE EFFECTIVELY THAN A TIME-PRESSED HOMEOWNER. LISA PREECE TALKS TO AWARD-WINNING DESIGNERS LANDMASS LONDON

Interior designers at Landmass London settle only for perfection. Established in 1998, the experienced team are renowned for creating some of London’s most desirable homes. Their unrivalled imagination has earned them numerous accolades, including “Best Interior Design in London” in the Daily Mail UK Residential Property Awards. They specialise in commissions from home owners wanting to produce the most prized confi guration of their property, complemented by timeless interiors and stunning features.

Landmass London was recently hired by an art-collecting family living in a secluded home in Little Venice, London. The clients wanted to accentuate the original period details of the property and make the most of the vast ceiling heights, using the spacious rooms to provide a sense of grandeur and scale. Three of the key rooms that were given a full makeover were the lower ground family room, the living room and the kitchen. After talking to their clients, the two designers, Eleri Lloyd and Ruth Soria, realised that the ground fl oor would be perfect as an entertaining space. From the start of the project, they were eager to knock through the dividing wall between the hallway and dining area to fl ood the space with light and provide a large, open-plan entertaining space. As the property is Grade II Listed, planning permission to make the change was a necessity. This also meant the designers protected and restored original features such as the cornice, skirting, doors and frames, which are original to the building. “The restrictions caused some problems as the ceiling was traditional lath plaster, which is also a protected feature in certain areas of the property,” Eleri points out. “This meant we had to consider alternatives to spot lighting in the ceiling in these parts of the house.”

A new marble fi re place was installed and oak chevron fl ooring was introduced with a bespoke stain and oiled fi nish. Subtle paint colours were chosen to enhance the sense of space. “The client’s art work was also a key factor for the design and a hanging system was introduced around the room, which enabled our client to hook lights above paintings as they wish,” Ruth discloses. “The neutral surroundings let these art pieces speak for themselves.”

“The brief for the lower ground fl oor was all about creating an area for the family to relax, watch TV, and allow the children to play in the garden while being supervised from the kitchen area,” Eleri explains. The space is fl exible, with the kitchen separated by sliding pocket doors which can disappear into the wall to have an open-plan kitchen living area when desired.

NEWS

Fine & Country opened a ninth Portuguese office in December 2015 with Fine & Country Albufeira joining the network of estate agents in over 300 locations worldwide.

The office has been established by Fátima Donnelly, who has lived in the area for over 12 years. Albufeira is the Algarve’s most popular tourism destination, known for its great beaches and nightlife. The market in the Algarve is particularly positive at the moment with 5% growth anticipated in 2016 due largely to the NHR tax regime attracting retirees from Northern Europe. Properties in the area range from apartments for around €200,000 to luxury villas for around €5 million.

Portuguese expansion

Fine & Country has expanded its global reach by opening the Costa Blanca South office in Spain in January. The office, which is located in the prestigious area of Punta Prima between the towns of Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa, will cover a large area which includes the two million residents of Alicante.

Fine & Country’s new office has been established by Elena Ivanova, Managing Director of Bennecke, one of the leading real estate agencies on the Costa Blanca. “There is a wide variety of properties in the area including apartments, townhouses, bungalows and villas with a range of prices to suit,” Elena said. “We are delighted to join a strong network with a great brand reputation that offers the best in international real estate.”

Date for the diaryThe Fine & Country Gold Cup is returning to Dallas Burston Polo Club in Warwickshire on Sunday 10th July from 11am to 5pm. Last year’s event saw thousands of attendees turn out to watch the Cup, which provided plenty of thrills as well as a lovely day out.

There will be something for everyone, from a champagne bar for adults to children’s area with funfair attractions, face painting, pony rides and competitions. Plus, families can purchase a delicious picnic hamper to enjoy on the day from the polo club.

The event is free to attend, with a donation of £10 requested per car. All proceeds will be donated to the Fine & Country Foundation, which is dedicated to fighting the causes of homelessness. Please see www.fineandcountry.com/uk/event to book your tickets.

On the boxFine & Country has made its first television advertising campaign. A 30-second commercial will air on the Channel 4 group of stations, known as ‘the home of property’, throughout March, April and May 2016. It will focus on Fine & Country’s lifestyle approach to selling homes and the importance of choosing an agent who understands how to turn a home into a bestseller.

“This is an exciting time for Fine & Country,” said Jon Cooke, CEO of Fine & Country. “TV is the natural next step to allow the brand to reach more people than ever before. The advert will demonstrate that while we’re well known for beautiful country houses, we also list a wide range of modern urban apartments and town houses, catering for all types of sellers of prime residential properties.”

Fine & Country Portugal added to their award success with the highly coveted ‘Best International Real Estate Agency Marketing’ award. This came after winning two regional awards, with the office going on to triumph in the worldwide category. Held in December 2015, the contest saw more than 2,000 entries from over 110 countries.

Joint managing partners of Fine & Country Portugal, Nuno Durão and Charles Roberts, said: “Winning these accolades in the face of incredibly strong competition from estate agencies across the globe has reinforced the work the company has put in over the last year to deliver the best of marketing expertise to our customers. It is a great credit to our marketing team in Portugal and the support of the Fine & Country brand based in London.”

A winning streak

WITH AVERAGE HOUSE PRICES INCREASING BY 6.4% IN 2015, NOW COULD BE THE PERFECT TIME TO INVEST IN PROPERTY. BUT HOW IS THE MARKET FARING IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE UK? OUR AGENTS SHARE THEIR OPINIONS ON THE HOUSING MARKET IN THEIR AREA TO HELP GUIDE POTENTIAL BUYERS TOWARDS A BEAUTIFUL HOME THAT COULD ALSO BE A HEALTHY INVESTMENT

1 East MidlandsAndrew Marshall, Fine & Country Market Harborough, says: “We have noted year on year increases in sales to buyers from London and the South East, and we predict that this trend will continue in 2016 and beyond. Plus, with the announcement that the electrifi cationof the Midland Mainline will go ahead, Londonwill be closer than ever.”

“Market Harborough already has the highest average price of Leicestershire’s market towns but it is still well below that of London and the South East. We are fortunate to have so many astonishing areas of natural beauty and unspoilt villages, plus top schools, shops and restaurants that help attract buyers from further south.”

2 East Simon Bradbury, Fine & Country St Neots, recommends investing in Cambridgeshire.“In my opinion, St Ives is a perfect investment opportunity for 2016, due to the charm and peacefulness of village life, combined with the convenience of easy access to the cities of Cambridge and London. I expect the villages of Hemingford, Houghton, and Hilton to be particularly popular in thecoming year.”

3 North “The property market in the Lake District and North Lancashire remains challenging; although activity levels are on the increase, prices on the whole have remained static. That being said, we have enjoyed a positive start to 2016, and we are optimistic about the year ahead,” says Sarah Edmundson from Fine & Country Lakes.

MARKET ROUNDUPM A R C H 2 0 1 6

4 South WestBristol experienced a surge in demand in 2015, and local Fine & Country agent Rupert Oliver is expecting the city’s popularity to continue. “This is most notable because of the electrifi cation of the Great Western Line, but also Bristol’s strong student population and rising growth in the legal, health and engineering sectors. These factors, coupled with the low volume of new builds, means that it’s a good city to buy property in.”

Craig Hughes from the Cheltenham branch says: “The market in Cheltenham is one of buoyancy and vibrancy. This is because there is still a lack of new instructions coming onto the market so once something does come on, interest is high and viewings happen quickly. Our applicant levels are rising and weekend viewing slots are being booked and fi lled up well in advance. I think that house prices will hold fi rm in the price brackets of £500,000 to £1 million, with the larger property increases being seen below £500,000.”

5 London As Central London is becoming increasingly out of reach to many buyers, Lucy Edlin ofFine & Country Cockfosters recommends buying in the north of the capital city. “North London is one of the most sought after places to live. You have the best of both worlds; Central London is a 30-minute tube ride away and yet the picturesque countryside surrounds you. House prices are rising quickly here as well as in Central London, so it is a perfect time to invest.”

6 WalesJulie Elliot from Fine & Country Swansea says: “In the Mumbles and Gower areas, property prices hold a premium due to the beach location. The area attracts a whole range of buyers from professionals, second home-owners, retirees and young families. Another reason why Swansea and Mumbles are so popular is due to extensive investment. A new science and innovation campus has recently opened at Swansea University, which will create 5,000 new jobs. With plans in place for an ingenious tidal lagoon as well, the development in the area is encouraging pockets of development and expansion throughout the city, which will in turn see an increase in demand and value for properties in the area.”

buyers from professionals, second home-owners,

7 West MidlandsRebecca Doble, Fine & Country West Midlands, says: “The New Homes team has reported excellent sales rates and has seen phenomenal success in Solihull and the surrounding areas. Birmingham and the Solihull area are experiencing huge regeneration thanks to Birmingham Airport being just10 minutes from Solihull town centre, which has daily fl ights to China starting this summer. Plus, we have highly rated schools, and superb transport links including the new Grand Central Station and motorway network.”

8 Yorkshire and the Humber“Interestingly, we have already seen an increase in buyers arriving from the south this year as highly skilled workers choose to leave London for buoyant city regions such as Leeds and the surrounding areas. The value for money, compared to the South for example, is exceptional,” says Mark Manning from Fine & Country in Yorkshire.

Snowfl akes drift lazily down from the sky, falling upon the upturned faces of guests who are amongst the fi rst people to enjoy Appleby Manor’s brand new, state-of-the-art Spa. The use of an outdoor Jacuzzi in a snow storm might sound positively Scandinavian to some, but as one attendee notes as warm water swirls around himin dazed eddies, it is in fact “The only way to enjoy a snow storm.”

The Eden Valley, whether in summer, winter, autumn or spring, is breath-taking. A million acres of pristine wilderness, dotted with villages, hamlets and cottages, it is surrounded, nurtured and sheltered by the mountains and fells of the Lake District, north Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales. Appleby Manor, the once splendid home of a wealthy solicitor, has sat within this magnifi cence since it was built in 1871.

Constructed of the fi ne pink sandstone found in the nearbyHeights Quarry, it sits atop a rise, offering unparalleled views of Appleby Castle and other prominent features that nestle between the peaks of Cumbria’s Lake District. Inside, fragrant logs crackleand spit in hearths and visitors are greeted by the scents of books at rest, good food cooking and fresh linen. The feeling of ease, common to all great country manor hotels, is almost tangible; internal fi ttings of the fi nest Pitch-Pine are accompanied by what seem to be period furnishings, although ones that have been chosen as much for comfort as for style. The central staircasecurls up through the body of the building and the familiar creaking of stepped-upon aged wood adds to the sense of otherworldliness,of bygone times and a slower pace of living.

Appleby Manor though, is a place of contrasts. Dinner in the English oak-lined dining room is a blend of classical dishes served with a modern twist. Helium-light souffl és contrast with truffl e-infused vegetables and the menu sports terrine of local game, venison, Lakeland beef and Norwegian Halibut. Vegetarians are well catered for, desserts are works of art and the cheese board– a tour de force of local specialities – is magnifi cent. Bistro dining is also available for those who prefer things a little less formal; the prices here are more than reasonable, yet no sacrifi ce in the quality of the fare is to be found.

It is, however, the addition of the Spa that provides the starkest contrast to the late 19th-century surroundings. The facilities are brand spanking new and the whole project is the brain child of award-winning architect Duncan Mackenzie, the designer of Champneys Springs, The RAC and numerous other spas around the world. Its fi ne lines, muted hues and contrasting materials create an ambience that is almost self-consciously modern. Temperature, lighting and colour have all been carefully thought out and the result is a spa experience that is head and shoulders above the competition.

The experience begins in the salt inhalation room, where a warm and gentle heat prepares pores for the cleansing to come. A short stop at the pedidarium, where warm jets soothe tired heels, is followed by the moist heat of the steam room, the intense heat of the sauna and a cooldown under the Rainsky and Monsoon shower. This ritual prepares tired muscles for the sheer joy that is the hydrotherapy pool, before invigorating jets add an additional layer of refreshment to both body and mind in the outdoor spa bath. A unique set of treatments are also available, with products carefully selected for quality.

Location-wise, secluded though it may be, the hotel is central enough to represent an excellent jumping off point from which to explore the vale. The sandstone of Lowther Castle, just a short drive away, reveals a magnifi cent work in progress. The once proud remains of one of England’s fi nest gothic homes is being lovingly re-imagined, not in its original role but as a carefully manicured garden. There are mossy woods, secret summerhouses, stone seats and hidden ponds to discover and a short trip to the café for a quick bite can be accompanied by a visit to the Lowther family’s art collection, which showcases some fascinating pieces from history.

Walks, a staple pursuit of the region, also abound. The Ashgill Force, located near the village of Garrigill – once an industrial landscape of lead mining – is the highest in the region and well worth the short walk down into the wooded gorge. The more adventurous can take part in a longer hike or cycle down to the Broomrigg Forest in search of its enigmatic prehistoric circles; several sets are there to be discovered, many surprisingly low against the ground and the exact purpose of the stones remains a mystery.

Travelling south, cruises across what is arguably the UK’s most beautiful lake, Ullswater, can be enjoyed year-round, though warm clothing is a must during the colder months.

The mix of verdant countryside, traditional towns and distinctive sandstone villages, many of which date back to Viking times, provides an endless variety of stopping-off points for those keen to explore the region by car, bicycle or boat. It’s easy to travel to Pooley Bridge or Glenridding for a lunch stop in one of the cafés, restaurants, hotels or inns. Alternatively, Appleby Manor can provide a made-to-order picnic and sitting in the shade, “beside the lake, beneath the trees, fl uttering and dancing in the breeze,” one can enjoy the “host of golden daffodils” that inspired Wordsworth to write his most famous poem. Other adventures, too numerous to mention in full, await discoveryso that you too can wander, if not as lonely as a cloud, then at least with its untroubled candour.

From Hadrian’s wall to the historic town of Alston, with its railway museum, art galleries and cafes, from the idyllic poetry path to the Smardale Gill National Nature Reserve, a stay at Appleby Manor is likely to be just one step on the road; thefi rst of many.

The BMW PGA Championship is a golf tournament like no other in the world. Founded in 1955 by the Professional Golfers Association, the BMW PGA Championship started life at the Pannal and Starbeck Golf Clubs. In addition, the event visited a number of other venues and witnessed some of golf's great winners, including the “voice of golf” Peter Alliss.

Having hosted the event for the first time in 1972, the Wentworth Club and iconic West Course in Surrey became the long-standing home of the BMW PGA Championship in 1984. When casting an eye over previous winners, it’s little surprise that the tournament is held in such high esteem throughout the golfing world. The list of winners at Wentworth reads like a who’s who of professional golf, including legends of the sport such as Bernhard Langer, Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, Sir Nick Faldo, José Maria Olazábal and Colin Montgomerie.

More recently, popular winners have included Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy. The defending champion coming in to 2016, is South Korea’s Byeong-Hun An, who won the 2015 BMW PGA Championship by six strokes over Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee and Spain’s Jiménez. By winning in 2015, Byeong-Hun An became the first Asian player to win the BMW PGA Championship, highlighting what a fantastic global event the tournament has become.

BMW became part of the event in 2005 and this has spurred the tournament on, in terms of growth and popularity. “The event has grown enormously in the past decade and is now one of the highlights of the sporting calendar. We have around 100,000

spectators through the gates over the week, creating a unique atmosphere and a real buzz about the place,” says Jamie Birkmyre, Director of Championship Management at The European Tour. “As well as some world-class golf on a stunning, iconic course, we have the superb Championship Village where spectators can enjoy an unrivalled experience, trying out golf challenges, checking out BMW’s amazing range of cars and enjoying some high-quality entertainment.”

None of this would be possible without an impressive golf course and the West Course at Wentworth is truly something special. Situated pleasantly amongst a woodland of oak, birch and pine, the West Course winds its way through the wooded landscape, offering changes of elevation throughout.

Between 2009 and 2010, 18 new greens were added to the West Course, all of which met USGA specifications and are kept to the highest standards. The remodelling and design of bunkers has also led to a more challenging course, one which demands a golfer use every club in his bag. These changes were overseen by a famous face, long-term Wentworth resident and golf course architect, Ernie Els.

A par 73 course that stretches 7,281 yards, it was first designed almost 90 years ago by Harry Colt and hosted the 1953 Ryder Cup. The World Matchplay was hosted by the West Course between 1964 and 2007 and the Canada Cup, now the World Cup of Golf, has also been played on the course. In terms of history and the volume of high-flying events staged, there are few courses that can match the West Course at Wentworth.

Wentworth is not only home to the BMW PGA Championship. It is also close to a major world city and the home-base of an important organisation. “Wentworth is where The European Tour headquarters are located, which makes life easier for the long build process,” comments Jamie. “Logistically, it has so many advantages. It is close to London, has excellent transport links and has enough space to set up a fantastic spectator village. Most importantly, however, it boasts a wonderful, testing championship golf course that is a pleasure to play and to spectate.”

In terms of prestige, few events can match the BMW PGA Championship, which is a major event on The European Tour. Not only does the event attract some of the best golfers in the world, it also draws in a number of big-name celebrities. The pro-am tournament, traditionally played on the Wednesday before the professional event, has featured a variety of famous participants. Previous faces to take up the Wentworth challenge include Sir Steve Redgrave, Tim Henman, Niall Horan from One Direction and Anton Du Beke of Strictly Come Dancing fame. Such is the popularity of the pro-am, it has become a spectacle in its own right.

One of the beneficial factors for the BMW PGA Championship is the fact the West Course sets up brilliantly for spectators. There is an amphitheatre-like quality about many of the holes, providing excellent viewpoints for all the action on the greens. There are grandstands available on some of the tees and greens, plus numerous eating and drinking options around the course, in addition to the Theatre of Food in the Championship Village. For many, entertainment off the course is just as important as the golf itself, with plenty on offer over the course of the week. “In the past few years we’ve had live performances from the Allstars Band and, last year, the Jones Gang, fronted by The Who drummer Kenney Jones. This year we’ve got Mike and the Mechanics playing a rare gig, and Tom Chaplin, the lead singer of multi-million album-selling band Keane,” comments Jamie. “There is also a new 100-foot putting challenge in the Championship Village – the Totally Mega Putt Challenge! – and Cotter’s Questions, where BBC commentator Andrew Cotter quizzes celebrities and players on the Show Stage.”

There really is something for everyone at the BMW PGA Championship and the fun doesn’t stop when the last ball has been putted. Indeed, 2016 will see the introduction of a Twilight Ticket option, allowing people to watch the closing stages of the day’s play and stay around for live music in the village.

It’s clear that the BMW PGA Championship is going from strength to strength. With a record breaking 113,640 spectators through the gates over the week in 2015, the event is continuing on a popular growth trajectory. Tickets are sure to be in high demand for the 2016 event, which takes place on the West Course between the 24th and 29th May. They’re on sale now, so book now before they all get snapped up.

SOMETIMES A HOME WHISPERS YOUR NAME. MICHAELA WHITE ANSWERS THE CALL, VIEWING A SUPERB FAMILY PROPERTY IN RAMSEY

Ramsey is an historic English market-town in the district of Huntingdonshire and the county of Cambridgeshire, lying around nine miles north of Huntingdon. The town was built up around the gate of Ramsey Abbey, which was governed by an Abbot who, in the early years, also controlled most of what went on in the town. The town manor is built on the site of the former Benedictine monastery and uses materials from the ancient Abbey.

It is suspected that a weekly market was held in Ramsey by 1200, with the bulk of the trade dominated by garden produce. The grant was confirmed by Henry III in 1267, who also granted a fair on the vigil and feast of the Translation of St Benedict and for two days following. Fisheries and livestock also played an important role in the fen economy.

Now, Ramsey is one of the five principal towns in Huntingdonshire. Within this lovely town, sits a unique contemporary family home, situated on a secluded plot approaching three quarters of an acre with its own private gated driveway. The property comes with garaging for seven cars, a studio and an office.

Access to this family home is via remote-controlled twin timber gates with a long gravel drive leading to the extensive parking and turning area. The rear garden faces south west and is laid mainly to lawn, with established flower beds, mature Wellingtonia trees and bamboo hedging, offering a high degree of privacy. The stunning entertainment area includes a sunken hot tub set in Brazilian walnut decking next to a pillared dining area with a tiled canopy roof, which houses a built-in barbecue, oven and space for a fridge for those times when al fresco dining is the order of the day. It’s not all for adults either – the property features a play area with Astroturf, enclosed by panel fencing.

Entering the home through the reception hall, the first impression is of light, courtesy of the full-height windows to the rear aspect. Double doors open to the kitchen, while an open-tread staircase with a glass banister leads to the first-floor landing. The walnut floor has underfloor heating, which warms the exposed brickwork in this room, while the inset ceiling lights provide a golden glow.

There are four double bedrooms with three luxury appointed bathrooms, two of which are en suite, and two main reception areas, where bifold doors open to the stunning lanai entertainment area. The sitting room is bright and airy, with two windows to the front aspect and a triple window to the rear aspect. The feature brick-built fireplace with wood burning stove keeps this space cosy. The family room is equally as welcoming, with three windows to the front aspect and exposed brickwork.

The kitchen will keep any home chef happy. Fitted with an extensive range of Schüller base and wall mounted units including a tall storage unit, it also has a built-in conventional oven, a combination microwave with plate warmer, a ceramic five-ring hob with extractor canopy and an integrated dishwasher. Walnut and Corian worktops match the walnut breakfast bar and the central island has a pendant light over.

In addition to the main house, there is a detached outbuilding with a self-contained ground floor studio, perfect for visitors. Above the studio is a generous amount of storage space. A further outbuilding is currently used as a gym.

This lovely family property is warm and welcoming, yet bright and airy. Its proportions are generous, without being overwhelming and every detail has been well thought through.

“I don’t think this is Michelin-starred, but it should be,” I overhear a guest commenting about the two AA Rosette Mulberry Restaurant as I sit with an aperitif in the Beagle Bar, part of The Manor House Hotel in Moreton-in-Marsh. This is one in a collection of eight character-packed, historic hotels that forms Cotswolds Inns and Hotels, who focus on magnificent country house hotels within the picturesque landscape of the Cotswolds countryside.

The Manor House Hotel is just that: a 16th-century manor house. Upstairs it’s all delightfully quirky rabbit-warren passages that give away its heritage, leading to lovely, light-filled rooms. Downstairs, the catchword is warm. Although there’s no open fire in the bar – there's one crackling in the library and another in the reception area – the cosy ambience makes it feel like there is.

In the dining room, slender candles burn on every table, casting a golden glow. Variations of classic tunes are being crooned in the background and impressionist-style images of cows watch over the tables. I’m glad I haven’t ordered the beef. I’ve opted for the four-course menu and spent a long time examining the tempting offerings to determine my first two courses.

Georgia is attending my table and delivers warm, crusty bread rolls, made on site, to tide me over. In a flash, she’s back with the amuse bouche; a sorrel panna cotta with red pepper relish. It’s almost too pretty to eat, but the flavours match the visual appeal, the relish adding a hint of sweetness to the velvety panna cotta that alerts my taste-buds that there’s a feast to come.

I’ve selected the goat's cheese starter, which is a particularly photogenic dish. A dark maroon dehydrated pear stands sentinel over a generous disc of goat's cheese, accompanied by sliced apple and grapes and a coating of walnut granola on a dark plate. Not only are the flavours superbly complementary, but the juxtaposition of textures is tantalising – the pear is smooth; the cheese creamy; the granola is chewy and the apple has an unusual grain. The dish is grounded with a drizzle of port sauce.

The main course of Sea Bream, the trio of fillets perched on orbs of Parmesan gnocchi, drizzled with crab bisque and bisque foam, with a spring onion stem providing a burst of colour, is simple yet delectable. Of special note is the crispy skin, which provides an appealing crunch paired with the soft fish flesh. This is the kind of food you eat slowly, savouring every mouthful.

After a suitable break to allow for digestion, Georgia delivers the dessert menu and I am faced with another difficult decision, settling on the blackberry and rhubarb parfait. She returns within moments. “We have pre-dessert also,” she says, confirming that this is a restaurant that shares my views on food. She places a rectangle of caramel mousse on the table, which is decorated with a dollop of chunky green apple sauce and a poppy-seed tuile. My taste buds have been told: it’s now time for sweets.

The parfait is stunning. Served on a long, rectangular, white plate, a smear of deep rose colour skids along the centre, framing the creamy parfait, which is served with a smattering of reddish-purple blackberries, bright pink rhubarb, cream-cloured apple sponge cubes and golden honeycomb. It’s an edible work of art, pleasing to both the palate and the eye.

I am too full to partake in the petit fours, but I can’t resist them outright. Instead, I return to my room with an oblong plate cradling cubes of cranberry and milk chocolate fudge, mango jelly, and white chocolate and lemon fudge.

On reflection, I disagree with the patron in the bar. The Mulberry Restaurant doesn’t deserve a Michelin star. It is worthy of two: excellent cooking, worth a detour.
