Spring finally appeared in our last few weeks of school and we were fortunate enough to have beautiful sunshine for our Easter Egg Hunt on the last Friday of term. As I write, fifteen of our Year 5 and 6 girls are joining with twelve year 7 and 8 girls on the school’s first joint Junior and Senior skiing trip. It is such a good reminder of the benefits of being part of a through school like St Margaret’s and I look forward to hearing about their time after they return. Our girls have given some wonderful sports performances this half term in Netball and Swimming and in outside activities too. The sporting calendar this term culminated in a spectacular Gym and Dance display with a record number of Junior girls taking part. Little St Margaret’s has been filled with the sound of singing this half term as the older girls have been preparing for their productions. Years 3 and 4 gave a magnificent performance of ‘Porridge’ to family members on the penultimate day of term and I’m sure I will still be humming the tunes when we return after Easter….just in time for the Year 5 and 6 production in May! Don’t forget that our soci al media pages are updated regularly to show just some of the many activities that our girls participate in throughout the school day and in our co-curricular activities. We are looking forward to a busy Summer term but in the meantime, may I wish you all a very happy Easter break. Mrs Norris THE JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWSLETTER APRIL 2019 The Coronet

Y4 – 6 Swimming Gala v Royal Masonic School

On Wednesday the 27th February St Margaret’s Swimming team had a gala against Royal Masonic School (RMS) and won. Year 4 did particularly well winning by 12 points (SMB 44 points, RMS 32 points).

It was lovely to have our family cheering the team on. The cheering made it a lovely atmosphere to swim in and everyone worked really hard in their year groups. There was lots of fast swimming from both schools spurred on by the friendly rivalry.

We began the gala feeling nervous but as we swam our races we were winning many of them, which made us feel more positive and confident we could win! It was a matter of time until we found out the results.

The results were in ~ we all waited with anticipation… We knew we had done well but couldn’t believe it when Dr Powell read the final results. It was so lovely to see the smiles on my team mates faces and, of course, our families too!

What a feeling to win against an awesome school like RMS!

The swimmers were:

Year 4 ~ Isabella Estel, Bonnie, Jemima Pickles

Year 5 ~ Rebecca Bevan, Anjali Ganguly, Pascale Chang, Shira Miller, Nathana Niranjan

Year 6 ~ Sadie Slagel, Florence Pickles, Lily Morris, Isabella Ingarfield, Zienna Sojitra

Year 4 ~ SMB 44 points, RMS 32 points

Year 5 ~ SMB 30 points, RMS 35 points

Year 6 ~ SMB 37 points, RMS 39 points

OVERALL SMB WON = 111 POINTS

RMS lost = 106 points

We would like to thank Dr Powell and Mrs Pimlott for organising the gala and for our chocolate bars at the end.

Well done girls.

We are so proud of you!

St Hilda vs St Margaret O Monday 18th March we had a swimming gala against St Hilda. We all did exceptionally well but we unfortunately lost. The Y3 lost their category by a few points. The Y4 won theirs and we were very proud of them. The Y5 sadly lost theirs but then Y6 brought some cheer by winning their one. The final score was very close with St. Margaret’s scoring 143 points and St. Hilda’s 155. We worked very hard but it’s the taking part that counts (but the winning important too!) By Arya (6S)

St Margaret’s vs Reddiford (Home) On the 4th March we had a netball match against Reddiford.

There were 3 teams all made of excellent players. The first team who played against them, unfortunately drew with a final score of 2-2.

The second team who played was the only team that won their match. We were very determined and the high spirit we had powered us through as we won our match. The score was 4-0 to St Margarets.

The final match was very well played but we didn’t win. They all persevered very well but unfortunately the final score 5-2. By Isabella and Arya (6S)

St Margaret’s vs St. Hilda’s (Home) On Monday 11th March we had a netball match against St Hilda and unfortunately we lost.

The first match we played extremely well and scored 6-4. Everyone played exceptionally hard. The second and last match we lost as well but we all persevered and that is what matters, not if we win or not! By Isabella and Arya (6S)

St Margaret’s vs St. Bournehall Primary School (Home) On Monday 25th March 2019 we had a match against Bournehall Primary school. We all played exceptionally well and it payed off and we won by one point. There were 3 teams and the team that went first unfortunately lost by 1 point. The second match was very close but we won again by one point and the final match we played very well and we drew with the other school.

The final score was very close with 3-2 to us! It was our last game of the season so we were very happy we got to win that match. By Arya (6S)

Book Week

Year 2

World Book Day We had great fun dressing up as our favourite book characters. Our book for the day was Sophie’s Snail by Dick King Smith. We did some research on the laptops, finding out about the Highlands of Scotland where Sophie’s Aunt Al comes from. As Sophie is going to be a Lady Farmer when she grows up, we went on a thinking chickens trail and we then discussed whether Sophie should say Sorry to Dawn for trampling on her toy pony after she had stamped on one of Sophie’s woodlice.

On March 7th the Junior School all came together to celebrate World Book Day. For this event, we had to come as a character from a book and bring that book. There was many different characters such as Dorothy, Alice in wonderland, the Ugly Sister from Cinderella and Bond, James Bond. The teachers planned fun activities for the girls to participate in. The teachers all came as various characters and we saw a very large variety from all the pupils. By Tia (6S)

TfL Workshop

On Wednesday the 27th of February, two men who work for TfL (Transport for London)

came to St Margaret’s, to tell us about the different types of transport and how it is

controlled through computer programming and using data analysis.

TfL control different types of

transportation such as:

Buses/Coach

Underground trains

Overground trains

Trams

Taxis

Cycling

Cars

TFL also control all the traffic lights. It was very interesting to find out how people try their

best to help people and what goes on between the traffic lights. We even did a role play

on how people in cars, buses etc. would have struggled without anything to guide them. It

was a very interesting workshop and I hope we see them again.

On Wednesday 13th March 2019 , Little St Margaret's had a week dedicated to STEAM

(Science ,Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths).

In the morning, we had a S.T.E.A.M. assembly where the Year 10s came and did different science experiments. They even set Imaan's(yr 6) hand on fire!!

During the afternoon, we had lots of activities related to S.T.E.A.M. First we were split into our houses (Southwark, Windsor, St. Johns and Waterhouse). Then we had four activities. ‘Water Cycle in a Bag’ was when we put water with blue food colouring in a plastic transparent bag with the water cycle drawn on it. ‘Maths Hunt’ was when we solved maths problems hidden all around the building. ‘Lollipop Structures’ was when we had to use lollipop sticks and pegs to build the tallest structures. ‘Far Far Away’ was when we attached a balloon to thread using a straw and when we blew up the balloon and let it go it moved across the thread.

On Tuesday, we had Environmental Day. During the afternoon we did activities related to the book 'Super Worm'.

We would like to thank Mr Hislam for organizing STEAM day, Mr Anderson for bringing his year 10 students to LSM for the assembly and Miss Porter for organizing Environmental Day.

By Mihika, Anshikaa and Imaan (Y6)

Year 1 girls have been

learning about capacity and

volume. They made their

own fruit cocktails, which

were delicious.

Year 2 Water cycle in a bag, a Maths quiz, making peg and lolly stick towers and zooming balloons were the activities on the STEM carousel which we enjoyed on the afternoon of Wednesday 13th March – it was great fun! Thank you Mr Hislam for organising it all.

Science

This term, the Year 2s have been looking at habitats. We went in search of micro-habitats to find out if all minibeasts like living in the same places. We found out that they didn’t! Some like dry places, whilst others like dark damp places.

In Science, Year 3 have been studying the famous

paleontologist Mary Anning and learning all about fossils in

our very own fossil museum.

Environmental Day

On Tuesday 12th March 2019 little St Margaret’s had its very own Environmental Day! This year it was based on the book Super Worm which was very enjoyable. There were a lot of different activities and my favourite one was where we had to dig in shop-bought soil for caramels, corks, forks and buttons. I found a caramel and a cork. I think we all enjoyed it very much and we all give a lot of thanks to all the teachers for planning this amazing day. By Arya (6S)

Year 2 ~ Environmental Day Wet, wild and windy summed up our morning walk, looking for worms and minibeasts. Jumping in squelchy muddy puddles was great. We read all about Super Worm and the things he did, then tried lots of activities linked to these in the afternoon. Thanks Miss Porter – it was brilliant!

Ski Trip

Our girls are having great fun on the slopes of Passo del Tonale, Italy

Mother’s Day Assembly

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 girls took part in a Mother’s Day Assembly. Parents joined us for a celebration of thanks and each received a special message.

Mrs McCulloch’s visit

Charity donations this half term

This half term St Margaret’s raised money for Comic Relief

which is a fabulous charity which supports Red Nose Day! In

the Junior School we were allowed to wear Comic Relief

accessories.

By Sameya and Zoey (Y6)

A big THANK YOU to everyone who

supported the Book Fair. We raised a total of £666.55 and we are very excited to be able to choose books for our school with the reward.

Mrs McCulloch, an ex-pupil of St Margaret's, joined us for a week before half term. She is training

as a teacher in the UAE. On her last day, she spoke about life in the UAE and also about what life was like when she was a pupil here too.
