Bonnie (Shih Tzu), Spike (Yorkie) and Fuzzy Rogers (Black Labrador Retriever), can't wait to get to work at SFBH. The three are among the 14 Plant City area dogs that bring a little joy to patients, visitors and staff as part of the hospital’s

popular pet therapy program.

“If you’re a patient at the hospital, chances are you’ll get a visit from at least one of our dogs. We’re here many days of the week, as well as evenings and weekends,” says Cassandra Banning, who coordinates the program under the direction of Eugena Gale, SFBH manager of volunteers.

In addition to Bonnie, Spike and Fuzzy Rogers, there are two Toy Poodles, another Black Labrador Retriever, a Golden Retriever, Golden Doodle, Boxer, Australian Shepherd, Cavalier King Charles, two Greyhounds and a Corgi who are part of the program.

“Patients light up when a dog comes into the room,” says Eugena. “It just makes them feel better.”

The pet therapy dogs have badges with their photos on it, just like all of the SFBH volunteers. There are also postcards with the dogs’ photos on them available. The owners can give the postcards out during a visit or they can be

purchased in the hospital gift shop.

“We always ask first before we enter a room, but almost everyone welcomes a visit,” says Cassandra. “The hospital staff love it too. I always joke that I’m invisible, as my dog Bonnie gets all the attention. But that’s ok. She’s the star and brings a smile to everyone in the room.” Due to her small size, Bonnie rides around in a stroller to visit patients. “I can wheel her right up to the bed and not have to pick her up. If a patient is in isolation, we can stand at the door and wave hello,” says Cassandra.

Barbie Frost has been part of the SFBH pet therapy program for almost 10 years, first with her

Boxer, Mack, and now with Zack, a one-year-old Boxer who just completed his testing and observation process.

“I was looking for a ministry separate from what I do at church, and the pet therapy program seemed like an answer to a prayer,” says Barbie. “Dogs love us unconditionally no matter what. When we go to the hospital, we always have a great visit. Everyone always has a story to tell you about their dog. It just really brightens someone’s day. I definitely get more out of it than we give.”

According to the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, a visit from a pet therapy team can increase overall emotional well-being, decrease blood pressure and reduce stress levels.

“A visit from one of our dogs gives people hope — it always brings their thoughts back to something positive,” says Cassandra. “Participating in the program has become a passion for me. It’s opened up a whole different world for me — a different way of seeing because of my dog.”

The dogs and owners typically stop first in the hospital lobby, then make rounds to patient rooms. They also visit waiting rooms for the Emergency Department, Same-Day Surgery and the Intensive Care Unit. They may also stop in the gift shop and check in at the SFBH Outpatient Rehabilitation Center.

Dipaolo, a Black Labrador Retriever, was especially fond of visiting the children in the Outpatient Rehabilitation Center. Therapists often used interaction with the dog as a reward to encourage pediatric patients, says Dipaolo’s owner Beth Glenn.

“There was a child who just loved Dipaolo and Dipaolo loved him,” says Beth. “We rearranged our schedule so we could be there at his outpatient therapy appointments. The two of them had a very special connection.”

But it’s not just children who benefit, Beth says. “Older patients will tell me about a dog that they had in their youth and how much it meant to them. And pretty soon, they’re feeling better. Petting a dog calms everyone.”

Dipaolo is now retired, his arthritis was bothering him; but Fuzzy Rogers, whom Beth also owns, has taken his place as a pet volunteer. Beth jokes that Dipaolo said to Fuzzy Rogers, “It’s your turn, now be calm and remember to keep a secret. I always told the kids who were petting Dipaolo – my dog can keep a secret, go ahead, you can tell him anything.”

To become part of the SFBH pet therapy program, individuals must fill out a volunteer application and have a personal interview, first with the volunteer department, and then with Cassandra. In addition to coordinating the hospital program, Cassandra is a tester/observer

with Alliance of Therapy Dogs, a national nonprofit organization that provides testing, registration and insurance for members. All SFBH pet therapy dogs must be certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.

To receive certification, dogs and owners must meet certain guidelines, including undergoing

observation and evaluation under different scenarios. “It’s important that the dog and owner work as a tight team. They must be bonded and respond well to each,” says Cassandra. “It’s all about safety for everyone.”

For more information about joining the program, stop in at the hospital lobby and request an application.

Tesla (Golden Doodle) with owner Carmie Powell visits SFBH patients on the weekends.

Diamonds & Denim, the SFBH Foundation’s annual gala was another huge success. Not only did the large crowd of 650 attendees have a great time seeing their

friends and neighbors, and enjoying the fantastic food from 911 Catering, but they had an opportunity to be part of the most successful event fundraiser in the Foundation’s 22-year history. $118,000 was raised to benefit South Florida Baptist Hospital services and programs.

Many thanks go to our Presenting Sponsor, Lockwood, Steely & Gill, MD's, PA. They are our hospital anesthesiologists and they work hard every day

to support our Surgery Center, and Labor and Delivery Unit. Our Blue Diamond Sponsor was Pete Beaty. Mr. Beaty has been a loyal donor since 2002. Growing up in Turkey Creek, he appreciates the need for excellent health care in our community. In addition, our Diamond Sponsors include BayCare Health System, TEAMHealth Emergency Medicine, Thompson Hartford Foundation, and Terry and Peggy Crum.

Thank you to all of our sponsors, without whom we would not have been so successful.

Mark your calendars for September 27, as this year’s 22nd

annual event!

Lights of Love once again was a great success. $30,000 was raised to

support community services and programs. The weather cooperated to help make the lighting ceremony one to remember. The evening started off with a special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus at the train depot for pictures with their biggest fans. Then First Baptist Church’s Teen Choir, Amplify, performed, as well as the children’s choir. That all led to the big countdown to light the 35-foot Christmas tree located in the heart of Plant City’s McCall Park. With one flip of the switch by Santa, the entire downtown area was adorned in Christmas lights.

Thank you to all who supported by purchasing a light in honor or in memory of a loved one. A big thank you to our major sponsors, Publix Super Markets

Charities, and Terry and Peggy Crum. Also, thank you to our in-kind sponsors, the City of Plant City General Services department and the First Baptist Church of Plant City. With their assistance, all of our guests experienced a great lighting show. And finally, thank you to our Master of Ceremonies, Vice Mayor Bill Dodson. Bill and his wife Sylvia enjoy Lights of Love every year and we are grateful that Bill was willing to put his speaking talents to the test. One of Plant City’s “longest trains in the world” came through downtown just as the ceremony was getting started.

Lights of Love 2018 will be held Thursday, December 6.

South Florida Baptist Hospital’s Information Desk is located in the main lobby. The desk serves as the primary hub for our Auxiliary Volunteers. Most guests make a stop by the desk to inquire about a patient room number or

directions to a department. In 2017, a planned gift was received from Paul and Theresa Welling who decided to include South Florida Baptist Hospital in their estate planning. They wanted to do what they could to ensure the hospital would always be there to support the community’s needs. Because of their generosity, the Information Desk was named in their memory. Theresa was a member of the Auxiliary, therefore it was a perfect area for the naming.

ew Physician in Town

e're on Social Media

When Srinivas Rajendran, DO, joined the South Florida Baptist Hospital medical

staff last year, it was like coming home. Dr. Rajendran, was not only born in the hospital, but he grew up in Plant City and was valedictorian of his class at Plant City High School. He’s also the son of long-time Plant City cardiologist Pattabhiraman Rajendran, MD. Now, father and son are in practice together on West Reynolds Street. “It’s a great feeling to be in practice in my home town,” says Dr. Rajendran, better known as Dr. Vas. “I’m a small-town guy and like knowing people here both professionally and socially. It’s good to be back, bringing all my schooling and training with me to help people.”

A specialist in interventional cardiologist, Dr. Vas is now one of three interventional cardiologists in the greater Plant City community. Joining his father’s cardiology practice expands the scope of care that patients can receive in one setting, making it seamless, from initial diagnostic testing to treatment and long-term follow up, says Dr. Vas.

“We are happy to have Dr. Vas join us at South Florida Baptist Hospital,” says Tharen Leesch, manager of interventional services, cardiopulmonary rehab, stress

and EKG services at the hospital. “Dr. Vas trained at a very busy facility and has brought a diverse set of skills to our Cardiac Catheterization Lab and STEMI program. He is a great addition to our program and we are happy to have him."

A graduate of Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Dr. Vas has the distinction

of being a quadruple board-certified physician, with an additional board certification pending. He is certified in general cardiology, nuclear cardiology, echocardiology and internal medicine. He is also board eligible in interventional cardiology.

“The different board certifications demonstrate that I’ve taken the extra steps to gain expertise and be current with the latest guidelines for interpreting diagnostic test results and treating patients,” says Dr. Vas. He hopes to expand the South Florida Baptist Hospital STEMI program for patients experiencing a type of severe heart attack. In addition, he has expertise in peripheral artery disease.

Dr. Vas says he knew from a young age that he wanted to become a physician. His father was

definitely a role model. “Over the years, many people told me that my father took care of them and saved their lives,” says Dr. Vas. “Cardiology has always interested me.” Interventional cardiology was a perfect fit, he says. “I enjoy working with my hands and my mind. It takes a keen eye to figure out what’s going on with

the heart, and then I have the training to fix it. I see patients both

in the hospital and in the office, and enjoy the long-term follow-up care I can

provide.”

Dr. Vas and his wife Angelica, also a physician, have a 2-year-old daughter, Ariana, and are expecting a son in April.

Have you ever wondered where the money goes when you donate to the South Florida Baptist Hospital

Foundation? Your contribution makes it possible for the hospital to purchase everything from new stretchers for the Emergency Department to high-tech medical equipment for the cardiac program. Here’s a closer look at how philanthropic gifts to the SFBH Foundation directly benefitted patient care last year.

High-Tech I.V. Pumps Intravenous pumps deliver medication, blood and fluids such as nutrients. They’re standard equipment in hospitals. New Alaris pumps acquired by South Florida Baptist Hospital are automated “smart” pumps with preprogrammed settings based on each patient’s weight and needs. The pumps also have built-in safety procedures, including an alarm, that alerts the nursing staff and helps reduce the potential for medication errors. According to June Ramsey, RN, director of Patient Care Services, a $130,000 donation from the Foundation made it possible for the hospital to purchase the new Alaris pumps.

Surgery Center Equipment In the Pete Beaty Surgery Center, Susan Musser, RN, director of Surgical Services, reports that the hospital was able to purchase many new items that improve our surgeons’ ability to treat patients. For

example, better image quality on new, cutting-edge endoscopy scopes improves the gastroenterologists’ ability to diagnose and treat GI conditions. For orthopedic surgery, new surgical tools aid joint replacement surgery. In addition, better patient monitoring equipment allows anesthesiologists to better monitor patients for improved safety.

LIFENET Software Last year, the hospital expanded its services to include treatment for ST-elevation myocardial infarction or STEMI, a type of heart attack that requires immediate intervention. A $50,000 donation from the Foundation made it possible to acquire new software technology that speeds up communication between emergency services providers in the field and the hospital. The new software, called LIFENET, allows EMS to send a patient’s EKG directly from the ambulance to the Emergency Department and Cardiac Catheterization Lab, making sure that everything is ready to go once the patient arrives.

Heart Ultrasound A $231,000 donation to the Imaging Department allowed the hospital to acquire a state-of-the-art cardiac ultrasound. This noninvasive imaging equipment uses sound

waves to image the heart’s chambers, valves, walls and blood vessels. The exam offers a good baseline to help determine how well the heart is functioning. “The new equipment makes a significant difference for both patients and physicians by improving the accuracy of test results,” say Vikki O’Neal, manager of Imaging Services, and Tonie Kelly, coordinator of Echocardiology.

High-Tech ER Stretchers An $88,000 donation to the Emergency Department made it possible to purchase eight new patient stretchers with special high-tech features that improve safety, comfort and care. “The stretchers have a built-in scale, which allows patients to be weighed without having to move them,” says Brooke Shepard, MD, director of the Emergency Department. “That’s important, since many patients in the ER are not mobile and accurate weight is essential for correctly dosing medication.”The stretchers also have new mattresses that are much nicer and more comfortable for patients, which improves patient satisfaction. In addition, they have added features for safety, including an alarm that sounds if the patient is at risk for falling. The ER staff benefits too, “The older models required the staff to raise and lower the bed manually. Newer stretchers are electronic, making it much easier to position the patient and prevent any injury to the staff,” says Dr. Shepard.Community participation in special events, planned giving and annual gifts to the SFBH Foundation provides the ongoing philanthropic needed support to the hospital. “We greatly appreciate everything the Foundation does to make it possible for us to stay up-to-date on new equipment and technology,” says Dr. Shepard. “These items make a significant difference for our patients, staff and physicians.”
