Undergoing weight loss surgery at South Florida Baptist Hospital was a life-changing experience for Plant City resident Hobert Monk. Hobart had surgery in 2015, a year after his wife Carol underwent the procedure.

“It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to us,” says Hobert. “I’m so thankful to Dr. Hall. I was doomed for a heart attack and would probably be dead without the surgery.”

Two years ago, Hobert couldn’t bend over and tie his shoes, and he wore a size 4X shirt. Only five-foot, seven-inches tall, he weighed 336 pounds. Today, Hobert says he feels like a new man. He’s dropped three shirt sizes and 12 pant sizes, and enjoys walking four miles a day and working in the yard.

Most importantly, his diabetes is under control without medication, and he’s been able to eliminate, or cut down on, other medications. “I went to my primary care doctor for a checkup and he said whatever you’re doing, keep it up,” says Hobert. “I’ll tell you, this operation has totally improved my life.”

National Certification

Since 2012, more than 257 patients have undergone weight loss surgery in the SFBH Bariatric Surgery Program. After five years of success, this summer the program applied for

national certification through the American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation Program.

“Applying for accreditation allows us to validate the hard work our team has been doing for many years now,” says C.R. Hall, MD, director of SFBH Robotic and Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Hall, Dr. Stephen Butler and Dr. Anthony Rossi, are the surgeons for the Bariatric Surgery Program, which offers comprehensive service that includes nutrition, fitness and counseling before and after the program. Patients can also participate in postoperative group support programs.

“We are serving an important community need with the Bariatric Surgery Program,” says Beth Tancredo, director of operations at South Florida Baptist Hospital. “We’ve been very successful in helping people regain their health and change their lifestyle. Having three surgeons in the program means we have a physician on call 365 days a year.”

Dr. Hall takes pride that the program’s results are equal to or better than the national average for bariatric programs around the country. “Because we are a smaller hospital, many people, including physicians, don’t realize that we have a world-class bariatric surgery program right here at SFBH,” says Dr. Hall.

Personal InspirationTzana Collas is a patient care technician at South Florida Baptist Hospital. Karla King works at the hospital in the communications office. Both are success stories for the Bariatric Surgery Program.

“I have been overweight since childhood and just couldn’t lose the weight on my own,” says Tzana. “It was time to start a new journey and be healthier.”

Tzana took her time before making a decision. She did research online, watched videos and attended the hospital’s orientation session. Since she works in the SFBH Post-

Anesthesia Care Unit, she also took care of Dr. Hall’s patients immediately after their surgery. Everything she saw and read made her confident she was making the right choice.

Since her surgery three years ago, she’s lost 100 pounds and will soon pursue her bachelor’s degree to become an RN. “I feel so energized and happy with my results,” says Tzana. “It boosted my confidence tremendously and totally changed my life.”

Heart disease and diabetes runs in Karla King’s family. She was in pain every time she tried to exercise due to inflammation. “I thought about it for a whole year before I had the procedure,” says Karla. “Best decision I could have made. I’m no longer in pain and I look better. It’s been a slow, but steady process. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s a cop out or a short fix. It’s a tool to help you lose weight and get healthy.”

The Rewards Are Great

A native of Plant City, Dr. Hall completed medical school and a fellowship in minimally invasive/bariatric surgery before coming back to the community to begin

practice. He was recruited to help expand the SFBH Bariatric Surgery Program.

“Bariatric surgery transforms all aspects of a person’s life,” says Dr. Hall. “I’ve had patients with serious, debilitating morbid obesity and after the surgery they are unrecognizable physically, mentally and medically. Their diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and other medical complications are no longer an issue.

“Changing patients’ lives is what makes my job so rewarding. As a physician, it’s inspiring to see such success over and over again."

April 28 marked the date for the 2017 Children’s Classic Golf Tournament at Diamond Hill

Golf Club in Dover. A field of 136 golfers played in the early summer heat to support South Florida Baptist Hospital, the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce and the Plant City Kiwanis Club. This charity golf tournament benefits children and youth initiatives and programs within the Plant City community.

South Florida Baptist Hospital welcomes June Ramsey as the new Director of Patient Care Services.

June brings more than 20 years of clinical experience and nursing management to the job and is pleased to be part of the SFBH team.

June was most recently with Florida Hospital Tampa, the former University Community Hospital,

where she was assistant vice president of critical care services. June first joined Florida Hospital Tampa in 1997 as a cardiac interventional nurse and team leader. She was later promoted to cardiovascular interventional unit nurse manager and then administrative director of the Pepin Heart Institute.

“June has excellent nursing and leadership skills and her vast experience will be very beneficial to our hospital and to the community,” says Karen Kerr, South Florida Baptist Hospital president.

June started her nursing career after graduating from Erwin Technical Center with an LPN degree. She

worked as a medical and surgical nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Lakeland Regional Medical Center while earning an

associate degree and then baccalaureate degree in nursing from St. Petersburg College. She received her master’s degree in nursing from the University of Phoenix in 2013.

June looks forward to taking the SFBH patient care experience to an even higher level of customer service. “The SFBH team is already providing the community with an exceptional experience, but I look forward to making it extraordinary for our patients and families,” says June.

Although she has lived in Florida for 30 years, June grew up in Indiana. She and her husband

Kevin enjoy being outside, hiking, traveling and spending time with family. She is especially proud of her two daughters, now 17 and 14, whom she and Kevin adopted from China when they were just 10 months old.

South Florida Baptist Hospital has a hallway connecting two floors that contains vignettes of historical hospital pictures. In

2016, in conjunction with the opening of the new ICU, John and Jane Pope of Jacksonville, Florida, dedicated this hallway in memory of his late father and mother Dr. Madison Reeves and Nancy W. Pope. Dr. Pope was one of the original physicians to work at SFBH and was the first chief of staff. The pictures used for the dedication and in the hallway were obtained through Plant City Photo Archives.

The Infusion and Chemotherapy Center at South Florida Baptist Hospital is now open five days a week to provide full-time coverage for oncology patients in the greater

Plant City area.

“By expanding our program, we’re not only providing patients with a higher standard of care but making it easier for them to be treated more quickly with less travel time,” says Mosharraf Hossain, MD, medical director of the center.

“Patients on active chemotherapy may sometimes be here for an entire day and driving 10 minutes versus 30 minutes can make a big difference when they’re feeling weak and tired,” says Dr. Hossain. “It’s much more convenient for them and their families.”

A board-certified oncologist, Dr. Hossain was an associate professor and medical director of the Hematology and Medical Oncology program with the University of

Missouri at Columbia, before coming to the Plant City area last year to join South Florida Baptist Hospital.

Since Dr. Hossain’s arrival, the Infusion and Chemotherapy Center has increased its capacity by more than 90 percent, going from 115 patients in January 2016, to 220 in January 2017.

In addition to providing daily coverage at the SFBH Infusion and Chemotherapy Center, Dr. Hossain sees oncology patients in the hospital.

“Having Dr. Hossain join our program has made a big difference,” says Lou Ann Brown, RN, nurse coordinator of the program. “Before, we were able to see patients only twice a week. Now we can get patients started on appropriate treatment as soon as possible rather than having them wait.”

There have been other changes to the chemotherapy program as well. In 2013, the center consisted of one small room with three reclining chairs. Now there are five individual rooms, each with its own television, and a total of seven recliners. “Most patients can now have a private room and their families can stay with them,” says Brown. “It’s made a big difference in patient care.”

To accommodate the program’s expansion, there are also additional staff members: registered nurses Lou Ann Brown and Jennifer Edmiston, and Kayla Wilkerson, a patient care technician.

When you walk the halls of South Florida Baptist Hospital, you'll often see patient rooms, waiting rooms and even departments with names of local

businesses or Plant City families that you may know. This is just another way to donate to the SFBH Foundation and in turn be recognized for your generous gift. PCHS Class of 1957 — To Honor a Graduating Plant City High School Class

Faye Gunn, hospital auxiliary volunteer and class representative, and Daphne Ballard, class representative, approached Jana Butler, Foundation executive director,

about an opportunity to donate funds from the PCHS Class of 1957. The classmates had funds that had accumulated over the years from different reunion events and from a group of classmates who attend a monthly breakfast. This group entertained a presentation from Butler and voted to name a hospital patient room on the renovated medical/surgery floor 2 South, Room 238. “The money is going to a good place!” said Gunn and Ballard. “We wanted it to benefit a local Plant City charity where we were raised and where we raised our families. SFBH is a great hospital and we wanted to be part of that.”

FBH Foundation Grants Improve Patients’ Experience

Music therapy to help reduce pain after surgery. A blanket warmer to keep patients from

getting cold during imaging procedures. A vein finder that makes drawing blood or inserting an I.V. easier, faster and more comfortable.

SFBH team members presented these ideas to win funding from the inaugural SFBH Foundation Patient Experience Grant program.

“Our first Patient Experience Grant program was extremely successful,” says Jana Butler, SFBH Foundation executive director. “We were pleased to received such positive, insightful ideas to make a patient’s day a little bit brighter and better.”

Last year, the SFBH Foundation set aside $10,000 in funding from the 2016 SFBH Team Member

Fundraising Campaign to launch a new program called the Patient Experience Grant program.

SFBH team members were invited to submit an idea that would make an improvement in patients’ day-to-day

experience at the hospital. Twelve team members applied for the grant and three projects were selected for funding.

Tonya Fish, CNII, SFBH Patient Care Anesthesia Unit, is a classical pianist and suggested using music as a complement to pain medication following surgery. Research shows that listening to soft, relaxing music can reduce heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels. The grant money made it possible to purchase pre-programmed headsets patients can wear before, during and after surgery.

Lee Silas, nuclear medicine coordinator, received a grant to purchase a vein finder, a small,

handheld device that illuminates veins just under the surface of the skin. Vein finders allow technicians to quickly and easily find patients’ veins in order to draw blood or insert an I.V.

Radiology team members Todd Warner, Jennifer Cain, Frances Pollard and Jamie Lane received

funding for a specialized heating cabinet where blankets can be kept warm for patient use. Because imaging procedures

can be lengthy and rooms are kept cool because of the equipment, covering patients with a warm blanket will keep them more comfortable and relaxed.

Applications for next year’s SFBH Foundation-sponsored Patient Experience Grant program will

be accepted in October. “We look forward to the continued success of the program and to the great ideas that we know will come forward from SFBH team members,” says Butler.
