EVENT RESERVATIONS

The Cornell Club requires res-ervations for all events with fees. For events that require reservations, Members may cancel until two days before the day of the event without incurring a cancellation fee. Members who cancel after the two-day deadline are sub-ject to a cancellation fee, and Members who do not show for an event will be charged. This cancellation policy does not apply to gratis events, such as lectures. All ticketed events (e.g., US Open, theatre, and museum tours) are final sale at the time the reserva-tion is made. Cancellations or no-shows for interclub events held at other clubs are subject to full charge after the two-day deadline. Any exceptions to this cancellation policy will be noted in the description of the event in the newsletter.

In 2005, he retired from professional chess to lead the pro-democracy opposition against Vladimir Putin and ran for the presidency of Russia in 2008. In 2012, he was named chairman of the Human Rights Foundation and has been a contributing editor to The Wall Street Journal since 1991. Kasparov now lives in exile.

His latest book, Winter is Coming, details how years of seeing his prophecies about Putin’s intentions fulfilled have left Kasparov with the realization of a darker truth: Putin’s Russia defines itself in opposition to the free countries of the world.

NIGHTMARE ON 44TH STREET: HALLOWEEN BALLThis Halloween put on your best disguise or black tie apparel and head to 44th and Vanderbilt for the Inter-Club Halloween Ball hosted by the Yale Club! Dance the night away as you mingle with friends and enjoy hors d’oeuvres and an open bar of beer, wine, and soda. Adventurous guests may also sip creepy cocktails from the cash bar. Prizes will be awarded in several categories for the evening’s most impressive costumes.

9:00pm – 1:00am. $60 per person inclusive of tax and gratuity for reservations received by Wednesday, October 28th. Members can also walk-in with a Club ID for $65 cash per person at the door, space permitting.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20th

A DANGEROUSLY WEAK CHINA WITH GORDON CHANG ’76What’s far more dangerous than a strong China? A weak and failing one.

For more than three decades, the primary basis of legitimacy of the ruling Communist Party has been economic growth. Now that the once-surging economy is tumbling toward crisis, the country’s rulers are increasingly relying on militant nationalism to stay in power.

As a result, they are lashing out in an arc, from India in the south to South Korea in the north. At the same time, Beijing is challenging the U.S. on the high seas and in international airspace, restricting freedom of navigation in the South China and East China Seas. China is on a collision course with the world.

Gordon Chang is the author of The Coming Collapse of China and Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes on the World; he is also a contributor at Forbes.com and blogs at World Affairs Journal. Chang has appeared on CNN, Fox News, CNBC, MSNBC, PBS, the BBC, Bloomberg Television, The Daily Show, and is a co-host and guest on The John Batchelor Show. Chang has given briefings at the National Intelligence Council, the Central Intelligence Agency, the State Department, and the Pentagon. He has also appeared before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission. Last, but not least, Chang has served two terms as a Cornell trustee.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23rd

PETER GOGOLAK ’64 LUNCHEONJoin Club Members for a luncheon and conversation with Peter Gogolak ’64, a former professional placekicker for the Buffalo Bills and the New York Giants. He is widely considered the chief figure behind the game’s adoption of soccer style placekicking. In 1966, after initially playing two professional seasons for the AFL’s Bills, he jumped to the NFL’s Giants, sparking the “war between the leagues” and the creation of the AFL–NFL merger. Gogolak is still the all-time leading scorer for the NY Giants and in 2010 he was inducted into The NY Giants Ring of Honor.

Gogolak played college football at Cornell, where his 41-yard field goal during Cornell’s 1961 season was the very first soccer-style kick in college football, and became a significant moment in the development of college football history. Prior to Gogolak, placekickers approached the ball straight on, with the toe making first contact with the ball. Gogolak, reflecting his roots in European soccer, instead approached the ball at an angle and kicked it with his instep. In 2010, he was elected as an honoree for the Ivy Football Association. Don’t miss this chance to meet a sports legend who forever changed the game of football!

CENTRAL PARK TOUR AND BRUNCHJoin Club Members and New York City Cornellians for a morning walk in the park, followed by a delicious buffet brunch at The Club! Take a tour of the southern portion of Central Park led by Central

Park Conservancy’s Vice President for Planning, Design, and Construction Christopher Nolan ’89, FASLA, and Associate Vice President for Planning Lane Addonizio ’95. From the newly reconstructed Grand Army Plaza to Bethesda Terrace and Bow Bridge, join us in looking at the landscape architecture and planning work that has helped transform one of the world’s most important public spaces.

Since joining the Conservancy in 1989, Christopher Nolan has overseen projects valued at greater than $200 million, recognized as the most significant and extensive renewal of the Park since its creation. Nolan earned his bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Cornell. He is a registered landscape architect in New York State and a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Lane Addonizio oversees research and analysis parkwide, project planning, and helps develop and manage the program of work for the Park’s ongoing restoration and reconstruction. Addonizio earned her master’s degree in urban planning from Cornell and her bachelor of arts in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University.

$30 per person, includes tour and buffet brunch at The Club. 9:30am tour begins at Grand Army Plaza at 59th Street and 5th Avenue. Afterwards, we will head to The Club for brunch! Advance reservations required by Wednesday, October 21st, at which time they are considered final sale.

RAY KELLY IN CONVERSATION WITH BRIGITTE QUINN ’84Join Club Members as former Police Commissioner Ray Kelly offers an in-depth look at his life fighting crime and terrorism in post-9/11 New York City. For this special evening, Kelly will be interviewed by Brigitte Quinn ’84 a television and radio news anchor.

We all remember where we were when the twin towers fell, the images of September 11, 2001, are burned into the collective memory of our nation. As the world grappled with the aftershocks of the attacks, no one understood better than Ray Kelly—who became New York City Police Commissioner just four months later—that New York’s security was a matter of national security. In his gripping memoir, Vigilance: My Life Serving America and Protecting Its Empire City, Kelly shares a candid account about driving violent crime down to record lows, the sixteen terrorist plots foiled on his watch, and his groundbreaking efforts to reshape law enforcement post-9/11. In a time when both terrorism and race relations between police and the communities they serve are at the forefront of the national conversation, Kelly, now the longest serving Commissioner in the history of the NYPD, stands as a veteran who has confronted both issues on the front lines.

After serving as a Marine in Vietnam, Kelly soared through

Calvin Noyes Keeney assistant professor of Plant Breeding in the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics at Cornell, for a delicious dinner focused on sustainability. A native of Newfield, NY, Dr. Mazourek was inspired to better connect farmers with research when he came to Cornell in 2009. “There were all of these cultivars developed at Cornell that had solutions to problems I had in my home garden for decades,” he said. Dr. Mazourek works on the genetic improvement of peppers, cucurbits, and snap peas for disease resistance, organic production, and regional adaptation. Dr. Mazourek has spent the past six years working with Dan Barber of Blue Hill restaurant in New York City and Blue Hill at Stone Barns to develop new organic crop varieties that emphasize flavor.

Hirshman is a retired distinguished professor of philosophy and women’s studies at Brandeis University; she holds a law degree from the University of Chicago and a PhD in philosophy.

the NYPD ranks in decades marked by riots, drugs, and a staggering murder rate. In his first stint as commissioner, under Mayor Dinkins, Kelly oversaw the police response to the 1993 World Trade Center Bombing. Mayor Bloomberg appointed Kelly as police commissioner once again in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, making him the first person to hold the post for two non-consecutive terms. Kelly transformed the NYPD into a resource-rich counterterrorism-and-intelligence force. Kelly holds a BBA from Manhattan College, a JD from St. John’s University School of Law, an LLM from New York University Graduate School of Law, and an MPA from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Brigitte Quinn has worked in broadcasting for more than thirty years, and was a television anchor at the Fox News Channel, MSNBC and NBC. She holds an MFA in writing from Sarah Lawrence College and a BS from Cornell. She lives in Connecticut, and is currently anchoring mornings at 1010 WINS radio in New York City. She recently released her first novel, Anchored.

Today, it is a thriving area and site of Cornell’s future tech campus, boasting a gorgeous view of the New York skyline.
