THE CREED

Sometimes called the Nicene Creed

It is a document that provides a summary of CORE CATHOLIC BELIEFS.

The Creed can be summed up in four simple statements.

1. We believe God the Father created us out of Love.

2. He sent God the Son to show us how to live.

3. He sent God the Holy Spirit to help us.4. The Church is a community of believers

who gather to bring about God’s reign.

The word Pope comes from the Latin word ‘papa’ meaning father

The Pope is the top authority and spiritual leader of the Catholic Church.

WHAT IS THE POPE’S JOB

The Pope’s job is to;- Interpret the words of the Bible- Look after and administer guidelines for

the Catholic Church, Catholic Schools and other Catholic organisations

- Appoint bishops to regional area’s- Promote love, faith, good works, peace

and social justice

HOW IS THE POPE APPOINTED?

When a Pope dies, the new Pope is elected by 120 cardinals.

Cardinals are bishops who are directly appointed by the pope.

In order to be a Pope, you have to be a bishop first.

Who is the virgin Mary?

WHO IS MARY?

Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ thus she is the mother of God. This makes Mary the mother of the whole world.

WHY IS MARY SO IMPORTANT?

The Bible describes Mary as the ‘most blessed among women’ and ‘highly favoured’ by God.

She was chosen to bear Jesus by God, through an immaculate conception.

WHY IS MARY SO IMPORTANT?

Catholics believe;- Mary, like Jesus, was born without sin- Mary is an intercessor. An intercessor is

one who prays for others.- Mary is a saint. She is an individual

who’s life has made her an example for believers of how to journey with God

WHY IS MARY SO IMPORTANT

Catholics celebrate the Feast of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15

Assumption means that God takes the individual body and soul into heaven, without him or her suffering death.

A saint is a member of a religion who after death is formally recognised as having led a life of exceptional holiness.

Saints are like Heroes of the Church. We look up to them as an example of how to live our lives.

What are some of the things that happen at Church?

THE EUCHARIST

Also known as holy communion, sacrament of the alter and the last supper.

Bread and wine is symbolic of the body and blood of Christ.

THE EUCHARIST

When the time for Holy Communion comes at Mass the priest holds up Christ, saying: "This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper". The priest receives Communion and then places the body of Christ in the hand (or on the tongue) of each person who wishes to receive Our Lord. The person who receives the body of Christ in the hand places the sacred host in his mouth immediately.

THE EUCHARIST

It is symbolic of Christs sacrifice for us and our sins.

It is an expression of faith and of obedience to Christ, God and the Holy Spirit.

SUNDAY MASS ATTENDANCE

In 2001, about 15.3 % of all Australian Catholics attended Mass on a typical Sunday.

Mass is a way for Catholics to celebrate and learn about their faith

Catholics believe Sunday is a holy day and a day of rest.
