Tax Aide Program for Seniors

Once again, the COA is pleased to

welcome back the AARP Foundation

Tax Aide Program to Frothingham Hall.

Our volunteer tax preparers, who have

been trained by the AARP in

cooperation with the IRS, will be available for

appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on

February 4. This free service is very popular and WILL

fill up very quickly, so please call the COA asap to

schedule your appointment. Make sure to bring with you

all forms that show your 2019 income, such as W-2’s and

1099’s. If you are itemizing your deductions, please bring

in all real estate tax forms, mortgage interest, and

charitable and medical deductions. The preparers will

also need your photo ID and Social Security card.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate requests for

specific preparers. Be aware that if your return is

particularly complicated, our volunteers may not be able

to assist you. Please check our website for a list of tax

items that our tax preparers are not certified to assist

with. Please note that joint returns require both people

to sign. We are asking people to arrive at least 20 minutes

early for their appointments to fill out an intake form.

Council on Aging Book Club

The next COA Book Club will meet on

Tuesday, February 25

at Frothingham Hall.

Come join us for a discussion on this

month’s selected book:

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the

adored daughter of a crippled fisherman,

falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore

near her home in Korea. He promises her

the world, but when she discovers she is

pregnant--and that her lover is married--she

refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts

an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly

minister passing through on his way to

Japan. But her decision to abandon her

home, and to reject her son's powerful

father, sets off a dramatic saga that will

echo down through the generations. Richly

told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is

a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and

loyalty. From bustling street markets to the

halls of Japan's finest universities to the

pachinko parlors of the criminal under-

world, Lee's complex and passionate

characters--strong, stubborn women,

devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken

by moral crisis--survive and thrive against

the indifferent arc of history.

The Friends of Frothingham Presents

Tuesday Movie of the Month

Tuesday, February 11

Noon-2pm

The Kitchen

Between 8th Avenue and the Hudson

River, the Irish mafia runs 20 blocks of a

tough New York City neighborhood known

as Hell's Kitchen. But for mob wives Kathy,

Ruby and Claire, things are about to take

a dramatic and radical turn. When the FBI

sends their husbands to prison, the three

women take business into their own hands

by running the rackets and taking out the

competition.

Feel free to bring snacks for the movie!

Important February Dates!

We’d like to share a few fun

date facts with you regarding

the month of February. First,

Saturday, February 1 is official “Ice Cream

for Breakfast” day. All there is left to say

about that one is ‘you’re welcome!’ and

‘bon appetite!’ Second, Monday, February

17 is ‘Random Acts of Kindness” day. You

have the power to brighten someone’s

day...sometimes all it takes is a smile!

Kindness is contagious...why not spread

some around?

Page 6 The Coordinator

February is Heart Health Month!

Heart disease is the leading cause of

death in the US for both men and women.

The good news is that it is preventable.

Make sure you are aware of any family

health history and risk factors. Visit your

doctor regularly to manage your health.

Follow the steps below to lower your risk

of this often silent killer:

Exercise and stay active.

Watch your weight.

Stick to a heart healthy diet and avoid

sodium.

Strive to control your blood pressure

and cholesterol.

Quit smoking and consume alcohol in

moderation.

Minimize stress whenever possible.

Mass Senior Medicare Patrol Program

Learn to protect yourself from

Medicare fraud! Come meet

a representative from the

Massachusetts Senior

Medicare Patrol Program here at the COA

on Wednesday, February 12 at 11:30am.

You will participate in a discussion on how

to prevent, detect, and report healthcare

errors, fraud, and abuse. We all have

an active role in protecting Medicare for

ourselves and future generations. This

informational workshop will provide you

with the tools to become a more informed

health care consumer and will include

information about the new Medicare

cards. Light refreshments will be served.

Please call the COA by Friday, February 7

to sign up.

opportunities to grow and prosper through

corporate socially responsible practices.

The Acknowledge-Grow-Embrace (AGE)

framework is a model that can be used

by companies to take advantage of the

diversity of an aging workforce. Join a

panel of professors as they discuss aging

and ageism at the Martin Institute at

Stonehill College on Thursday, February 13

at 1pm. Please call the Martin Institute

need for either a warming center or an

emergency shelter, the opening will be

highly advertised on the Town of Easton

completed and the detour

has been deactivated. The

temporary signals at Bay Road and

construction season to accommodate

final paving operations. The contractor will

continue working throughout the winter

months on the pump station installation

and depending on weather conditions

may perform some limited excavation

within the roadway on side streets.

The remaining roadway work (Bay Road,

Depot Street, Foundry Street east of Five

Corners) will resume in the spring.
