JHere is a summary of one of the talks I heard at the CONSTRUCT 2016 Show in Austin, Texas...

James Benham, Construction Science professor at Texas A&M, gave an address at the CONSTRUCT show in Austin called "Future Forecast: How Drones, Sensors, and Integrated Apps are rewriting all the rules.” This was the “Game Changer” address. Every year, CONSTRUCT highlights one presentation as key to understanding where the industry is heading, called the “Game Changer.” Benham asks why integrate technology when great things have been done in the building industry without computers. He points to several reasons including increasing profits, handling complexity, increasing safety, and the elevation of the craft. Typically, estimators spend about 50% of their time counting things. With BIM, that time can be cut to 10%. One easy step is to move into the cloud for things like RFI’s and storing photos. But technology is also being used for things like analyzing safety issues and helping to prevent them (Smartvid.io) Technology can be:Management Tech (70% of the industry does not experiment with technology at all. Others are using drones, scanners, and wearables.) Buildstream measures everything during construction to see if things were done correctly. Milwaukee One Tools controls your tools. Smart bricks? Building Tech (goes in the building) The term “Internet of things” has become popular. It means connecting physical devices in your home to be accessed remotely. There are many apps readily available now that make this possible. Control4 runs whole house. Automatic is a dongle that captures how you drive. Others include Philips Hue, WEMO, IFTTT (if this, then that). Some exciting areas of emerging technology that pertain to the building industry are: Wearables interact with your biology. 10% of construction companies use wearables. Did you know workers typically only spend 37% of their time actually using a tool to build? Visual tools include augmented and virtual reality (VR). The owner can walk their space in VR. Hybrid reality

brings things into VR with you- which can be good for training. Augmented BIMVP navigates a model and can show you if everything is correctly placed. O&M manuals- scan equipment with your pad and have instructions immediately available. Microsoft Hololens is a Windows interface and can project digital models which you can manipulate - you could share what you see on site with engineer who could change the model immediately. Caterpillar uses AR to show customers new equipment. Benham predicts that in 2-3 years from now, we will not use conventional monitors anymore.) Sensing (Amazon Echo's Alexa) Tactical (Bear tech glove and Hyundai's Iron Man, GM power gloves, Google project jacquard) Computer vision uses high precision laser scanners (Leap Motion, Project Tango). Do takeoff a, As-Builts. Structure sensor adds on to iPad. Photogrammetry can scan whole cities with a drone and aerial photographs and input the information into BIM. 3D printing - use light from your phone to print objects (OLO on Kickstarter). The Chinese are printing in concrete. A brick laying robot replaces 5 masons. If you want to try 3D printing, Benham recommends the Flash Forge Dreamer Home 3D printer for starters. How do you integrate technology into your practice? Never say yes or no, say "Let's Investigate"... Put innovators, not naysayers, in charge. Become a tinkerer- try out some of new stuff. Best Buy takes returns. Learn always. To learn more about the speaker, check out his Podcasts on Thursday. #contechtrio or go to Jamesbenham.com/to learn-more.

A Csi Corner

Get Your Hands Dirty!By Sheldon Wolfe, RA, FCSI, CCS, CCCAGreater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area

Among the things specifiers grumble most about are the typical architect's lack of knowledge about how things work and how they go together, and the belief that "If I can draw it someone can build it!"

Some architecture schools do include courses about the practical aspects of architecture, but those courses are often optional, so most architects graduate with a lot of knowledge about visual design, planning, and presentation, but little understanding of materials or construction.

It's fine to have a presentation about masonry, but so much more could be learned from participants getting their hands dirty. It's easy to draw a 4 x 4 x 8 brick, but what does it feel like? It takes no more effort to draw a 3-5/8 x 2-1/4 x 11-5/8 brick or a 3-5/8 x 3-5/8 x 15-5/8 brick, or, for that matter, a

12 x 8 x 16 concrete masonry unit, but what difference does it make to the mason? It doesn't take any longer to draw a large masonry unit, but does the size affect installation time?

Until you pick up a brick, mix the mortar, and try to build a wall, you simply cannot appreciate what your details mean in the real world. This shortcoming presents a tremendous opportunity for continuing education programs.

In June of 2000, twenty-five architects from my office went to the masonry apprentice school in St. Paul for an afternoon of fun, down-and-dirty continuing education. The program was set up by Olene Bigelow, our local International Masonry Institute (IMI) rep, and contact for the Brick Industry Association (BIA).

The apprentices set up a series of stations, each showing a specific part of the job. Demonstrations included reading

drawings and specifications, estimating, mixing mortar, laying brick and CMU of various sizes, installing door frames, and more. After the book learnin' discussions, the architects got their hands dirty at each station and learned how their decisions affected construction and schedule.

In 2004, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Chapter visited the school and followed the same program. It's easy to complain about what architects don't know, but they are not alone. Specifiers may know more of the technical properties of materials, but many have had no more practical experience in construction than architects.

I used masonry as an example, but similar programs could be done for everything that goes into a building. All of us can do better if we know more about how other team members do their jobs.
