It looks like Jim Hageman is having a good time at our meeting, reminiscing with old friends and meeting new ones like Larry Howell. Don’t wait so long before joining us again, Jim!

Above, President Sherry presents José Basilio with a token of appreciation for his presentation on the Spanish exploration of Florida. At right, Bob Clendenin returns his worn, 15 year old Charlotte Sun umbrella to Dave Pow-ell, in hopes of having it repaired or replaced in time for the rainy season; lots of luck, Bob!

Sergeant Don counts empty squares on the Paul Harris Board; about 35 remain.

Happy 32nd Anniversary,

News Cameras and Ponce de Leon By Guest Editor Mike Colgan

Invocation May each of us assembled here today enjoy the many offerings of Rotary.

May we abide by the rules we have established - those of trust, fellowship and ethics.

May we place Service above Self, in our daily endeavors.

May we always test ourselves and our efforts to be sure they are the truth, good for all concerned, of benefit to man-kind, and provide peace and under-standing.

Amen

Today April 10 April 17 April 24

Happy Anniversary to us...

Early morning, at my table was José, always one of the first to arrive, then John along with fellow Northerner Leo. We will have the com-pany of Leo for an-other month, but John is leaving; we wish him well and look to his return next year. News cameras from WINK are at the Cul-tural Center for the Million Dollar fund raising challenge, bringing a Jim Hageman sighting!

Besides our nor-m a l visitors J o e R e z e k brought a guest, M i k e

Paz, a financial planner with Edward Jones. Birthday notes were from Carol W. for her Grand-daughter Jenifer, Mike Moody’s actor son Kevin, Leo’s Daughter and son-in-law Kelsey and Ryan, Sherry’s Grandson and Laura, not sure who she belongs to. Bob McD gave an Anniversary dollar for Polio vaccine. He also proclaimed this was the an-niversary of Ponce De Leon landing in Florida. José said, “No way José!” Happy dollars: Carol W. for her Grand-daughter in her first play, Rick for the Buck-eyes, Tom for his stress test, Bob C. happy to return a medal left behind last week by Larry. With all his athletic achievements, Bob stated, he likely did not miss this one, but Larry re-ceived it gracefully. Then Bob brought out an

old Sun Herald umbrella for David Powell, to see if the Sun would fix it. Good luck with that, as it looked to be 15 years old and certain be out of warranty! One last dollar from Dar-ryl, proud to have his daughter sing the Na-tional Anthem at Special Olympics. The club went into auc-tion mode as John donated two Rays tick-ets for April 2nd. After back and forth be-tween Don V. and Rick, Rick won with a bid of $30. Suddenly realizing he couldn't make it, the tickets, by default, went to Don for $25. After announcements for Quiz Challenge, Farmers Market and Bingo, we were treated to a history lesson from José.

José spoke about Ponce de Leon. He (Ponce, not José) came to our shores in 1513. Florida is Spanish for Easter, Pasua Florda, because of the time of year. We learned Ponce settled the island of San Juan where he built a

house, still standing today, and became the first Governor. He returned to Florida with Her-nando de Soto, going to the West Coast, land-ing North at Tampa Bay. Ponce was injured by Indians and brought to Cuba where he died, José tells us. His remains were taken to San Juan, his final resting place. With Joe Rezek leading us in the 4-Way Test, we concluded another week in the life of Charlotte Harbor Rotary.

THE

FOUR-WAY TEST

Of things we

think, say or do

First, Is it the TRUTH?

Second, Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Third, Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Fourth, Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

From high school teacher to freelance broadcaster in the Tamil language. From advertising agency executive, to managing a paint manufactur-ing business, and then to operating a passenger ferry service between India and Sri Lanka.

Because of the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, I gave up everything and moved with my family to Chennai, on the Southeastern coast of India, for safety. Since my mother and sisters were US citizens living in Cleve-land, Ohio, we were sponsored to get permanent visas to come to the USA. I worked for the Cleveland Sun Newspaper as an advertising ex-ecutive for about a year. Moving to Florida, I was hired to manage the Ramada Inn in Port Charlotte. In one year the property was sold and I was jobless.

Then the Punta Gorda Herald hired me. This was short-lived as The Charlotte Sun bought that paper. I worked for the Sun for about three years. I managed all the medical and bank advertising accounts, and was making good money when one Friday afternoon I got the pink slip.

With the help of my good friend, David Hill (Rotarian now deceased), I went into the travel busi-ness. This was only for perks and not to make a living. One day I was offered an interpreter job by the Department of Immigration, to interpret from Tamil to English and vise versa. With my teaching experience I thought I could do it. Now for over 12 years I have been an Immigration Court Interpreter, traveling all over the country.

Last year I was contacted by another agency to interpret for Herbalife, in California, which I willingly accepted. To-day, I work for Immigration and Herbalife. I do telephonic interpretation as well.
