ANZAC DayThe emotional and sentimental significance of this date resonates throughout the local and national community. ANZAC Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on the shores of Gallipoli in 1915. It is a day where all Australians remember those who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations over the last 100 years. The spirit of the ANZAC, its human qualities, courage, mateship, leadership and sacrifice, continue to have meaning and relevance throughout Australia today and are echoed in our school community as qualities of a Cathedral student. On 25 April 2014 over 140 students from Prep to Year 12, led by our marching band, paid their respects to those many men and women who have served, and still are serving our country. The traditions of ANZAC Day are a significant part of our lives growing up in Australia and I was honoured to be a part of making up The Cathedral School contingent to pay our respects.

It was my great pleasure on Foundation Day this year to let members of the School Community know that we have already begun planning for our Centenary in three years’ time. This will be a very important time and we will be looking to celebrate the history of our school and the achievements of our school community over the first 100 years of its life. In particular, there are two projects that we are considering and I now have the pleasure of sharing these with St. Anne’s Old Girls and The Cathedral

School Past Students. The first of these is the publication of a book with 100 stories about our school and the people who have graced its playgrounds and hallways over the school’s first 100 years. We will be inviting Past and Current Students and Staff Members to share their stories and photos of their time at the school, before deciding which of the 100 we shall place in our publication.

The second project will involve the assemblage of a structure that bears the names of all students who have ever been enrolled as a student at either St Anne’s or The Cathedral School. This will involve the collection of some 13,000 names which will be engraved in rock or metal and then placed on a structure yet to be designed. This structure will also bear

the names of the members of staff that have worked at the school since 1917. We believe that

this project will represent the gratitude and respect of the students and staff who enrol at the school in its second 100 years, as well as celebrate the work and traditions set down by those that attended and worked at the school in its first 100 years.

We will also be holding a number of events throughout 2017 to celebrate our centenary, and we will release the dates of these events as soon as they are finalised. We are looking forward to welcoming huge numbers of former students to the school in 2017 and I encourage you to start making plans to visit the school during its centenary year.

Unite this NightCATHEDRAL COMMUNITY UNITES THE NIGHT TOGETHER TO FIGHT FOR FARMERS

The Cathedral School community has united together to hold a unique event to raise much needed funds for drought stricken farmers. The event titled “Unite this Night – Fight for Farmers” was held on the evening of Friday 25 July at the newly developed Jezzine Barracks in Townsville. Over 800 members of the school community participated in a 5km twilight run or walk dressed in bright neon colours and glow in the dark items that lit up the night.

With the idea stemming from a Humanities tour to Singapore earlier in the year, the group came across a neon night run and thought it would be a great fundraising concept for our Western Queensland Drought Relief Appeal.

The school has been raising money for drought relief all year and to date just over $6,000 has been raised which can be added to the $5,000 which was raised from “Unite this Night”.

Event organisers and senior teachers Jillian Turner and Cameron Triffett said they were inspired by a desire to help Western families doing it tough with the ongoing severe weather conditions.

“We wanted to do something meaningful for our farmers as we’ve both worked in boarding and know a lot of the families from out west. To be able to fundraise and have some fun with a neon night run seems like a great combination,” Ms Turner said.

Generous donations from the local community made the event possible including donations from Coles Supermarkets,

The Coffee Club, Northern Suburbs Lions Club, @tmosphere Mobile Disco and Latin Vibrations Zumba, just to name a few.

“These are difficult financial times, and we were mindful of this during the set up for the event. For a first time event, we were surprised and excited by the registration numbers. We now feel confident that next year could be bigger and better. We also had amazing support from the staff - there were so many who helped out on the night!” Ms Turner said.

‘Unite this Night – Fight for Farmers’ certainly lived up to its name. “The positive response we had from staff, parents and the students just goes to show how united we are, trying to help our farmers” Ms Turner added.

Almost 400 grandparents and special friends went back to school for the day when they attended the Grandparents’ Day celebrations held at the School on Friday 27 June.

Every year Cathedral’s Early Learning Centre and Junior School opens its classrooms to grandparents in a celebration of family inclusion and involvement. It has become an annual event that the whole school community really looks forward to.

Head of Junior School, Mr Luke Baills said “Grandparents Day is one of the many family orientated events held annually at the School. Events such as this allow the school community to celebrate the unique culture of our school with very special people.”

Grandparents had a very busy morning whilst they were at school. A concert, especially choreographed for the celebration was performed followed by a delicious morning tea of jam and cream scones served by the children. Grandparents and special friends then moved to the various classrooms with their grandchildren to enjoy the dynamics of a modern education, while also reflecting on their own time at school.

“Grandparents’ Day is an incredibly special time in the Junior School for the students and their grandparents. The day gives our children a wonderful opportunity to showcase their skills and talents and there is nothing more exciting for a child than to perform on stage in front of people they really care about and love” added Mr Baills.

Children who have grandparents that are unable to attend the day did not miss out; these children nominated a “Special Friend” in place of a grandparent.

“Often in society schools only consider a child’s family as their mother, father and siblings. Here at Cathedral we realise families can be much broader than this and we also appreciate the value many grandparents add to family beliefs and values. Our grandparents play a valuable role in most family structures and it is great to acknowledge them on a day like this” said Mr Baills.

Belinda said “Being a defence family with no family of our own close by we are very lucky to have such lovely neighbour’s in Alama and Don. They have dedicated their time to Rhylie every year to attend Grandparents’ Day.”

It also turns out that Alma is actually an old girl of the School attending the St Anne’s city campus from 1949 – 1952 and always enjoys coming to the Grandparents’ Day celebrations and seeing how the school has transformed over the years.

In March this year, The Cathedral School’s Student Parliament once again organised activities to help raise awareness for the National Day of Action Against Bullying. Everyone in the Middle School was involved in supporting this anti-bullying campaign and to show support, all students were given wrist bands with anti-bullying messages on them.

But one very talented Year 8 student, Alex Woods, went that extra mile. She not only wrote the lyrics and music for a song, but she then went on to record it and have it published on The Cathedral School’s YouTube site. The song is called “Don’t Give Up”. Alex says that she wrote the song from past experiences with bullying. The song tells a story of a teenage girl going through the sadly well known reality of bullying. Alex said, “I think it is important to raise awareness to help, and hopefully stop bullying because lots of people all over the world get bullied and sometimes not everyone sees it happening.”

Alex hopes that in future her song will inspire victims of bullying to stay strong. Since her video was published on the 24 June, it has had over 900 views. “The message I want people to learn through my song is for the people who are being bullied to know that there is someone out there who will not let you be alone. And even though times may be tough, to never give up.”

One in four children in Australia say they are bullied on a regular basis. The National Day of Action Against Bullying aims to enforce the message that bullying is not okay!

With contributions such as Alex’s amazing song, this message will certainly be reinforced!

The School’s 97th Birthday was celebrated in style on 25 July with the annual Foundation Day celebrations. Our guest speaker, Sam Askin (Class of 2004) entertained the crowd with his humorous stories from his time at the school.

The annual Lagoon Dash was fought out following the service, with Chatham House winning both the boys and girls events. The Current Students were too fast in the Bragging Rights race which was the Past Students V Current Students V Staff with a special inclusion of the students from Foshan No 1 Middle School who were visiting the school.

Following the race the students, staff and guests all enjoyed the School’s 97th Birthday cake and went back to class with a clear reminder of how fortunate we are at The Cathedral School. Foundation Day allows us to celebrate what we have achieved as a school and to give thanks to God for the abundance of resources, facilities and opportunities.

I know this news might come as a disappointment to some, but the Past Students’ Association Committee has decided to reallocate the costs and stop professionally printing the newsletter. The money previously spent will now be directed to paying a casual Administration Assistant. The Connection newsletter will still be published online and if you have requested a printed copy we will do this internally and post a copy to you. As mentioned above we have hired a casual Administration Assistant and this sees us welcome Grace Baldwin (Class of 2012) to the position. Grace has a big job ahead of her going through our database, ensuring we have the latest contact details of all our past students.

It is always exciting to welcome back our past students to the school and in the month of July we welcomed a small group of past students back for the Reunion Weekend celebrations. We had the Class of 2009, Five Year Reunion at the Bird Cage on the Friday evening, the School Tour and Afternoon Tea on the Saturday afternoon, which is always popular and an intimate Reunion Dinner in the foyer of the new Rock Centre on the Saturday evening. I always love meeting past students of St Anne’s and The Cathedral School and at reunions we often reignite old friendships and create new ones and this is what makes the school such a special community.

This month we have the annual Past Students Vs Current Students Touch Football Challenge. This year we have decided to introduce a new sport to the challenge and a game of Netball will also be held. It is always a great event which sees some of the youngest past students return to the School for the challenge.

As we approach the Centenary celebrations in 2017 we would love to receive donations of any memorabilia you might have lying around. So if you have old Dawn Magazines, school hats, badges and uniforms, or photos you would like to donate to the Association we will gladly accept them. Even if you would like to donate them for a short period of time this would also be greatly appreciated.

The School and the PSA are very excited to bring you some amazing projects and events in 2017, so stay tuned for more information.

I am very grateful to be a in a position where I get to talk about our amazing school and listen to the all the interesting stories from over the years. Recently I have been lucky enough to accompany some of the Year 5 students on their Outdoor Education adventure to Ravenswood. It is such a quaint little town and I really enjoyed sharing the history of Saint Anne’s relocating there during the war. The children really enjoyed hearing all the stories.

This PSA keeps growing from strength to strength and if you’re interested in getting involved with the committee we would love to hear from you. It is really important that we continue to keep the connection with our past students and also keep the association strong.

On Monday 28 July the Year 1 students celebrated 100 days of school. There were lots of activities that involved counting to 100 and a big party at the end. Here is what the children had to say about the day:

Samsen was a past student himself finishing at the school in 2011 and is currently playing in the Under 20s Holden Cup. It was great to have you back Samsen, we hope to see you again soon!

Cathedral’s Newest Lawyers

Earlier this year, three graduates from the Class of 2008 were admitted as solicitors by Judge David North at the Townsville Supreme Court. The three students were Patrick Newman, Jack Giudes and Justin Turner.

Patrick studied at the University of Queensland, Jack studied at Queensland University of Technology and Justin at James Cook

University. They all did their compulsory post graduate diploma in Practical Legal Training from Australian National University.

Patrick and Jack are now working at Giudes and Elliott and Justin is at Wilson Ryan and Grose.

cara and John are currently living in sydney where cara is working part time as a hr assistant while completing a bachelor of business through usQ and John has recently graduated from uQ with a bachelor of computer science and is working as a software developer for a sydney based company.


In the lead-up to the school’s centenary, we are asking past and present students and staff to ‘tell us your story’ as a way of illustrating the rich tapestry of the school’s history. Over the years, the school has gone through many changes, but it is the people, their values and their experiences, that have created the life and character of the school, and this is what we seeking to preserve.

So, do you have a story to share about your time at St Anne’s or The Cathedral School? It may be a general reminiscence about your school days, or a particular incident that stands out in your memory. We would love to hear about it! Length does not matter, nor does your writing style – just get it down and send it in!

If you would prefer to tell us your story orally, please get in touch with Mrs Lanphier and we will organise someone to talk with you and record your story for you.

It is our intention to select one hundred of these stories to publish in a commemorative book in our centenary year: One hundred years … one hundred stories. Please submit
