Letter from the Pastor

“When I was young I was sure of everything; in a few years, having been mistaken a thousand times, I was not half so sure of most things as I was before; at present, I am hardly sure of anything but what God has re-vealed to me” --John Wesley

These words of the founder of the Methodist movement ring true to me today. As a denomination, the United Methodist Church is going to have to make decisions about who we are and who we want to be at the next General Conference. The many different possible outcomes are too numerous to begin to name. Everyone seems to have a theory. Every the-ory and proposal brings a newfound feeling of fear for the unknown.

In the middle of the rushing wind that whistles all around, I finally understand what Wesley meant by “at present, I am hardly sure of any-thing but what God has revealed to me.” I know for certain that I am called by God to serve as a pastor. God has affirmed and confirmed my call many times. I know that Christ showed his love for me by giving his life for me, and that it is this love that compels me to teach and to share with others the unconditional, resurrected love that seeks to embrace us all. I know that I am invited to trust that God who started a good work here in this church will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6). I know that I have nothing to fear for I have been called by name and God is with me (Isaiah 43:1-5). I am caught in the paradox of being certain of so much and yet sure of so little. I suppose that is why faith is “the reality of what we hope for, the proof of what we don’t see” (Hebrews 11:1, CEB)

I admit that every day there seems to be more things that I sim-ply do not know and cannot understand. The Good News, the best news, comes from one final quote from John Wesley:

“The best of it is, God is with us.”

Grace and Peace

Project Renovate– Coming Summer The refurbishing of the fellowship hall is tentatively planned to start this summer, but we need your help.

There has been a very generous commitment from the “Friends of Harold McDonald” to match dollar for dol-lar up to $125,000 cash contributions to Project Renovate.

This commitment is good through June 2020. What a great opportunity toward funding the much needed refurbishing of our Fellowship hall.

Please prayerfully consider contributing to this matching fund, and keep on the lookout for updates.

It is good to praise the Lord and make music to Your Name, O Most High .

Psalm 92:1

TRUE WORSHIP

In the fourth chapter of the Gospel of John, Jesus and the disciples traveled through Samaria – some-thing that good Jews would not do. Jews considered Samaritans half-breeds. They would go way out of the way to go around Samaria to avoid Samaritans.

Jesus and the disciples stopped in the village of Sychar in Samaria. Jesus had a conversation with a woman – something that good Jews would not do. A respectable Jewish man would not speak to a woman drawing water in the middle of the day; it would have been obvious that she was an outcast since ‘good girls’ didn’t go to the well in the middle of the day.

When Jesus identified her life situation (that she had been married five times and that she was living with a man who was not her husband), she deduced that he was a prophet. She tried to engage Jesus in a religious debate about the proper place of worship. Jesus didn’t go for it. He said, “But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth (vs. 23-24).”

The place of worship is not of primary importance. The manner of worship is not of primary impor-tance. The openness of the heart and the attitude of the mind are important. Are our hearts filled with grati-tude to God? Are our minds focused on Him and His Word? The Father is seeking people who will worship Him in spirit and in truth.

Gray Stallworth Pastor of Discipleship

Are you active and effective in sharing with others your faith, your resources, and your love?

Philemon 1:6

You can find more information and register on our website at

https://www.msumc1.org/wednesdays-small-groups/. If you have questions, please call

Pastor of Discipleship Gray Stallworth.

Salt and Light of the World

We are called to be the salt of the earth. This means being a preservative, provoking thirst, and to do so we must go make contact in the world around us! Salt will only enhance the food if it’s added!!

As His disciples we also have the responsibility to let our light shine brightly in this dark world. We have to get out beyond these walls.

Oh yes, this world is dark. But even in moments we think are our darkest, there is light! John 1:5 says “The light keeps shining in the dark, and the darkness has never put it out!”

Are you engaged in a ministry or outreach program of this church?

“His love endures forever.”

Pastor Gray

Engage Small Groups

Our small groups will continue in the Church Wide Study of ‘The Walk” until April 5. We hope that groups will have a great experience during this time. After Easter, we’ll have four additional weeks of Engage Small Groups be-fore we ‘break’ for the busy May-August season. Remem-ber last summer’s “Ice Cream Crawl”? We’ll have an-other series of stops at local spots to enjoy some ice cream and fellowship.

Hospitality Ministry

The Membership and Evangelism Committee collaborated with the Communications Commit-tee to create a new “Visitor Packet”. Our mobile “Welcome Center” is also in the works, so we see the time around Easter as our launch of this new ministry team. Volunteers are still needed to fill various jobs on this team. See Pastor Gray for more details.

During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says for us to “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” With busy sched-ules and many distractions in daily life, it can be tempting to dis-obey this instruction. Let’s be in continual prayer that the Lord will help us to actively seek Him first as we order our to-do lists every day. Our place within the kingdom is by His grace, a truth to be mindful of especially during this season of Lent, and applies dur-ing every other season as we carry out our daily responsibilities.
