THE ROTARY CLUB OF RICKMANSWORTH
The Rotary Club of Rickmansworth has for many years actively
cooperated with the Three Rivers Music Society in running this musiccompetition. The competition has always attracted very talented
young people who have in many cases gone on to win othercompetitions, including the BBC Young Musician competition, as wellas making careers in the musical world.
The Rotary Club also organises other youth activities, including a
Technology Tournament where teams from local schools are set adesign and technology problem, with supplied materials. Also weorganise a public speaking competition, Youth Speaks, where teams of
school children compete in a national competition.
Rotary also supports local charities such as the local branch of TheAltzeimers Society, Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, andHearing Dogs for the Deaf, while we have contributed to a new MRI
Scanner at Harefield Hospital and specialist equipment for cancerpatients at Mount Vernon Hospital. The proceeds of our Christmas
street collections are always distributed to local charities and theneedy in our local area. This year we are fund-raising for MountVernon Cancer Centre and Michael Sobell Hospice.
Internationally, we have contributed to The Rotary worldwide
campaign to get rid of Polio, a project supported by the GatesFoundation. We have achieved over 99% elimination with onlyPakistan and Afghanistan still harbouring a few hundred people with
the disease. After natural disasters our Club have sent Shelter Boxes(containing vital basic equipment such as tents, spades and water
purifiers) to these disaster zones - such as the earthquakes in Haiti andJapan, and the tsunamis around the Indian Ocean. We also helped andsupported the victims of the floods here in the UK earlier this year.
We are, therefore, a service club with a strong social element, meeting
weekly for fellowship and for future project planning. We welcomenew members to join us in our ventures.
