The Competitiveness within Juan Dela Cruz

Whos better than whom? That is always a question in every peoples mind. It may not be

the person themselves but the people around them do. It kind of annoys me at times but I kind of

love it in different times as well. Its like people would never stop comparing, someone must

always be better or good than the other one. ant we be equals instead of always being so waryof whos the upper hand? That is a thought Ive always had because of a firsthand e!perience. In

studying "istory I have found out that this competitive nature of #ilipinos had been present way

back in time even before the $paniards came.

%atus and &aginoos would always have competitions to find whos stronger, whos a

better fighter, whos braver and such because it is a symbol of power. The one on the upper hand

would always have a greater power than the other. In these rivals arise. I dont think its money

that is really that root of evil but power is the true root of evil. 'ower is something people are

willing to die for and kill for. It is infectious that even the purest and noblest people can be

tempted. (ne of the concrete e!amples of how competitive people can be for power is 'olitics.)ust look at *milio +guinaldo and +ndres onifacio, $ergio (sme-a $r. and &anuel ue/on,

#erdinand &arcos and 0inoy +quino and to state the worst is the &angudadatu and +mpatuan

where their rivalries are passed on to the whole family1 They are some of the greatest rivals in

'hilippine "istory. The e!tent of things they can do for power is endless. 0o wonder 'olitics in

the 'hilippines is so dirty. To think that is 2ust one of the many things how competitive people

can be for power. (h dont get me started on the business tycoons and capitalists. &oney is a

symbol of power and you know how much they adore their precious money that they care for no

one but themselves. These rivalries can also be imposed by people around a person such as that

of )ose 3i/al and &arcelo ". %el 'ilar. Their rivalries are similar to that of +guinaldo and

onifacio where each has their own group of supporters. The only difference is that of 3i/al and

%el 'ilar did not resort to evil measures such as that of +guinaldo and onifacio.

The competitive nature in #ilipinos is actually a gift that is rampantly misused. It is not

bad to be competitive and strive for the better but instead of trying to be better for others why not

be better for yourself. 4se this competitiveness as measure of motivation to do good things for

you and the people around you. %ont ever let this competitiveness get in your head too much

because what is e!cessive is never good at all. e a better you not a better than someone else.
