Dear Friends,2010 Board of directors

2011 officers & New Board MeMBers fouNdatioN staff

What an incredible year 2011 has been! The following pages showcase some of the important milestones that your Foundation has achieved, plus highlight some of our work to improve the effectiveness of the local nonprofit community. We also feature a few personal illustrations of the ways The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound continually strives to improve the lives of individual residents in our community.

The year began with your Foundation receiving the assets of the Irving A. Lassen Foundation. The $5.5 million Lassen legacy has doubled our asset base, allowing us to deliver a far greater impact as a granting organization.

With greater impact comes greater responsibility. Fortunately, we have an incredibly dedicated and talented board of directors and grants committee. We are confident in their ability to manage our funds and guide our grant making efforts to improve our community.

The days ahead will present ever more exciting––yet challenging––goals to be achieved. Today we

hear from many nonprofits how they must confront the need to do more with less. We also hear from them that their greatest need is for unrestricted, general operating dollars. Such flexible funding enables them to use funds where they are needed most, and to be most responsive to needs as they arise.

At The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound, we are honored to support the work of many key nonprofits as they preserve, protect, educate, empower and otherwise care for the people and resources that make our community great.

Sincerely,

Moving Philanthropy Forward: Community Foundation Receives $25,000 for Capacity Building

In April, The Foundation received one of nine Community Foundation Initiative grants awarded by Philanthropy Northwest. Thanks to generous underwriting for the initiative from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we received $25,000 to help build the capacity of local nonprofit organizations.

Working with the Thurston County Asset Building Coalition, this special project will employ unique and sustainable strategies to foster collaboration among nonprofits in five key service hubs: housing; health; income; food; and financial education and prosperity. The goal is to create a replicable model for enhanced collaboration among agencies working in common areas.

The project brings together college representatives, financial institutions, local governments, nonprofits, faith communities, low-income health assistance, micro-enterprise organizations and many others. All of these organizations have convened around asset building as a common thread, with a shared desire to move forward at a sustainable level.

This grant––one of only nine given––confirms the value of our Foundation’s vision in developing a collaborative model to enhance nonprofit services.

New Environmental Fund Reflects Community Values

This past year The Foundation established a new Environmental Fund to focus on three key themes:

• Conservation, restoration, and recreation on lands and waters;• Promoting “green enterprises” in our communities;• Advancement of the “triple-bottom-line”––initiatives that

help people, the planet, and profits (or earth, economy and community).

This third theme largely revolves around food ––growing it, creating community gardens, providing it to food banks, promoting healthy eating choices, developing markets, supporting small farmers and businesses, and buying local.

As this new fund grows in both mission and impact, your Foundation will actively explore the question, “What activities are defined as ‘environmental?’”

As part of the forward thrust embodied in our new slogan, Moving Philanthropy Forward, we hope to creatively challenge the way our society approaches the traditional environmental values of conservation, restoration, recycling and reuse, as well as new models of sustainability, energy, local economy, and environmental education in the Internet Age.

South Sound Estuary GrantThe main purpose of the South Sound Estuary

Association (SSEA) is to create opportunities for the public to learn about the role of river estuaries within our greater wildlife habitat. This includes geology and marine life, as well as human impact on Puget Sound, the second largest estuary system in the United States.

Last spring The Foundation granted funds to support SSEA’s Beach Naturalist Outreach Program that provides educational experiences to those visiting area beaches.

Making connections between human sources that impact our planet––coupled with presenting positive alternatives––can help plant the seed for citizens of all ages to become better stewards of our environment.

Scholarships Improve Lives by DegreesJohn and Opal McGimpsey never had an opportunity to attend college. Both were

raised shortly after the Great Depression and took to heart the lessons of frugality and hard work. The couple married early, moved to Thurston County where they grew a successful grocery business and raised a large family, all of whom graduated from college.

After their retirement, John and Opal got to thinking about how to honor their family and give back to the community that had been good to them. In 2007 they established a sizable scholarship fund to benefit graduates of the high schools their children and grandchildren had attended––Olympia and North Thurston high schools.

As a result of their generosity, eight local students are attending or have graduated from college so far. The scholars, chosen on the basis of need and aptitude, are clockwise from lower left: Evelyn Carlson, a 2010 Olympia grad now a sophomore at the University of Washington pursuing a degree in Engineering; Vy-Thanh Tran, an ’08 North Thurston grad and Vietnam émigré, now a UW senior whose

goal is to become a dentist; Melissa Manong, graduated from North Thurston in ’07 and from the UW in 2011; Christina Wichman, an ’09 North Thurston grad pursuing a career in nursing at South Puget Sound Community College; Madelynn Brickey, graduated from North Thurston in 2010 and currently a sophomore at Western Washington University with plans to become a teacher; Brittany Taliaferro, graduated from Olympia in 2008 and now a junior at The Evergreen State College studying computer science. Scholars absent from the photo are James Kooi, a 2009 Olympia grad now a junior at UW studying business; and Kent Reister, who graduated from TESC in 2010 and is now pursuing a

Master’s in teaching.

John McGimpsey continues to visit The Foundation office on a regular basis and closely follows each year’s scholarship selection process by means of two of his grandsons, who sit on the selection committee.

John says he is often asked why he chose to fund such a large scholarship program. “Well,” he tells people, “there’s nothing we could have done with this money that could have given us more joy.”

Flexibility Key to Diverse New FundsHave a cause or a loved one you’d like to honor? The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound may be

your answer.

The Capital City Marathon group recently established a fund to “promote healthy running activities and events in the greater Thurston County area––open to community members who wish to participate.” This fund will inspire more activities and events leading to a healthier community.

The extended family of Patty Mulhern, a lifelong nurse, established a memorial fund in her name to support nurses attending retreats or workshops at Harmony Hill Retreat Center in Union, WA. Patty passed away in 2009, at the age of 62, after a brief illness with the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Patty was a co-creator and co-facilitator of the program for Nurse Renewal at Harmony Hill, and her family’s fund will both enshrine and keep alive the impact of her work.

In a different vein, The Parks, Arts, Recreational and Cultural (PARC) Foundation set up the Jocelyn Dohm Classical Choral Fund to benefit classical choral music in our community. Assistance through this fund allows choral groups, as well as their audiences, to share in the celebration of song and keep alive community traditions.

As these examples show, whatever your objective, The Community Foundation can help you achieve your dream.

Donor Advised Funds: A Profile Community Foundation to Manage $5.5 Million Lassen Foundation “Initially, we thought we wanted to set up a private foundation,” explains Stu Vannerson,

“but our attorney detailed the complexities and tax reporting requirements, so we began looking at other options.”

After talking with a friend, the Vannerson family opted to set up a donor-advised fund through The Community Foundation.

“If what you want is to invest in your community, in a tax-advantaged way, there’s nothing like The Community Foundation,” says Carol Vannerson. “The people are right here. It’s easy to channel dollars to a single place where it can be directed to many causes. I call it ‘one-stop shopping.’ ”

The Vannersons say The Community Foundation is tailor made for what they want to do. They have used The Foundation’s mix of options and flexibility to contribute to causes local, national and international. Most recently, the Vannersons provided crucial funds to the Capital Playhouse to keep its doors open at a difficult time.

“My wish is that more people would know about The Community Foundation and what it can do to help nonprofits during difficult economic times,” says Carol.

In a move to gain efficiencies and leverage the strengths of both organizations, the Irving A. Lassen Foundation granted its funds––worth more than $5.5 million––to The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound to conduct asset management and grant making.

The Community Foundation is committed to carrying forward the vision and legacy of Irving A. “Irv” Lassen, a longtime Olympia resident who founded the Lassen Foundation in 1974 primarily to support Thurston County nonprofits. Over the past ten years, The Lassen Foundation has made more than $2.1 million in grants to 116 nonprofit organizations, all generated from the fund’s original endowment.

With the new fund, The Community Foundation has doubled to more than $11 million in assets. “The economies of scale resulting from this growth will allow us to increasingly strengthen the three counties we serve, Thurston, Mason and Lewis,” said Norma Schuiteman, executive director. “We are grateful that the Lassen trustees selected us to achieve their grant making goals in perpetuity.”
