Culture of Trust + Comet Pride = Student Success

The Comet Connection

In the Fall of 2016 our district rolled out our five year strategic plan, developed by our team of stakeholders. We established our Mission and Vision statement, and our Core Values, that we utilize to establish annual goals and objectives. As we enter our third year of this plan, I wanted to give a brief overview of where we are to date. We believe in a high quality, nurturing, and collaborative staff that inspires student success. Preschool through fifth grade children who live within the city limits of Coloma will be able to go to a bus stop to be taken to Coloma Elementary and Coloma Intermediate schools. The bus stops are at Randall Park on Tannery Drive; at the American Legion Hall on Sassafras Street, and at the Salem Lutheran Church on Marvin St. Any questions? Please email Terry Lampros, Transportation Supervisor at [email protected]

For the most current information on school closings/delays please check the following:

TELEVISON RADIO WWMT WSJM 1400 AM WNDU WSJM 94.9 FM WSBT WYYZ 97.5 FM WBND WCXT 98.3 FM WIRX 107.1 FM WCSY 103.7 FM

School Closings and Two Hour Delays

When weather or road conditions make travel unsafe it often becomes necessary to close or delay schools. Typically a decision to close or delay schools will be made by 5:30 am, however, changing conditions may extend the decision-making process to 6:00 am. When the decision to delay or close is made, local radio and televi-sion stations are immediately notified. Sangha communications are also initiated.

If it becomes necessary to close all the schools or a particular school after the school day has begun, the media will again be immediately notified. There will be approximately 45-60 minutes from the time a decision to close is made until students are dismissed. This allows time for bus drivers to report and parents to arrange child care or make oth-er arrangements that may be necessary if parents cannot be at home.

As an alternative to closing school during inclement weather, the school may choose to delay the start of classes for two hours in anticipation of improving weather and road conditions. The decision will be reviewed between 7:00 and 8:00 am, to determine whether to continue with the two hour delay or cancel school for the day. If a two hour delay is decided upon, we strongly encourage all students to attend school, but will implement the following schedule changes: There will be no transportation for AM Math/Science Center classes 1st period will be canceled for high school shared time classes Class schedules will be adjusted Breakfast will not be served The major determining factor when making the decision to close school will always be the safety of our students.

NEW!! Sangha Announcement Notification System Coloma Schools is going to a new announcement notification system starting 2018-2019.

You will soon receive an invitation from Sangha ([email protected]) on behalf of our school. The subject line will read “Invite from” and include our school name. Don’t miss this email! When you open it on your mobile device, there will be a link to walk you through the steps to download

our new Sangha app and create a password. The invitation email will also include instructions. Powered by Edlio, Sangha will enable you to stay in the know about your child’s classroom and the school while on the go. The school and teachers will be adding calendar events and sending newsletters, signup requests and messages through the Sangha mobile app at your fingertips. No more sending a paper copy of the consent form, trying to remember when you signed up to volunteer, or searching for the teacher’s email from last month!

SEXUAL HARRASSMENT

Sexual harassment is unlawful under both Michigan and federal law and is contrary to the commitment of Coloma Community Schools to provide an effective learning environment. This policy prohibits sexual harassment of stu-dents, employees, board members, volunteers, contractors or applicants for employment by students, employees, board members, volunteers or contractors. The district will not tolerate sexually harassing behavior as defined by law and/or by district policy. False reports of sexual harassment or retaliation against persons reporting allegations of sexual harassment, or refusing to cooperate in the investigation of such complaints will also not be tolerated.

STUDENT PARKING Students who drive to school are required to park in the east lot, have a completed Application to Drive on School Property form (5514F1), and a valid park-ing pass displayed on the rear window of the vehi-cle. New this year, the number on the parking per-mit will identify the numbered spot in the parking lot. The cost for the decal is $10 per year and the decal can be used with multiple vehicles. Students will have the opportunity to register their vehicle on the first day of school. Students who fail to register their vehicle run the risk of being towed (at the own-er’s expense). Students will be given a grace period of one week in which to register their vehi-cle. Beginning with the second week of school, warn-ing tickets will be given. Students will be given 3 warning notices before their vehicle will be towed. We appreciate your compliance as this is one piece to helping us provide a secure environment for your student.

HEALTH DEPT. INFO. Benton Harbor 769 Pipestone St. 269-927-5638 Hartford 57418 CR 681 269-621-3143 Some Michigan public health departments may not be able to give im-munizations to children whose parent/guardian has health insurance to cover immunizations. You should call the local health department be-fore going for immun-izations

IMMUNIZATION WAIVERS

Immunization waivers are needed when a parent/guardian skips one or more of the vaccinations required for children entering school. There are two types of waivers: Nonmedical waiver - based on religious, philosophical or other objections to receiving required vaccines. Under the new require-ments, parents/guardians must participate in a science-based education session with a health professional at their local health department if they are seeking this waiver. To request a nonmedical waiver call the Berrien County Health Department at 269-926-7121 to schedule and appointment for an education session. Medical waiver - based on a child having a medical reason (a contraindication or precaution) for not receiving required vaccines. A physician must provide documentation of the medical reason for not vaccinating. To request a medical waiver, contact your child’s health care provider. A physician must sign the State of Michigan Medical Contraindication Form . Return the signed form to the child’s school.
