The good news overflows in this annual review issue of The Columns and I am delighted to share

Martin Methodist’s progress with you. Within these pages you will see the remarkable work of our faculty,

along with the corresponding achievements of our students. We continue to enroll increasing numbers of

capable students of good character who excel under the challenging and supportive tutelage of our faculty.

I know you will enjoy reading these inspiring stories of student success.

Thornton Wilder, the author and playwright of Our Town, once remarked, “We can only be said to

be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” Indeed I count Martin Meth-

odist College as one of those treasures. And I know so many of you feel the same way because I regularly

hear your encouraging words and see evidence of your generous support of the college’s work. Martin

Methodist College is a treasure. You need only engage one of our current students in conversation or talk

with a Martin alumna or alumnus to recognize that an education here can be a life-changing experience.

It is appropriate that this annual review issue of The Columns also recognizes the generous support

of so many people who made contributions to Martin Methodist College over our last fiscal year. With the

impetus these donations made possible, we are able to celebrate a year of astonishing progress. While

many colleges around us took backward steps because of economic constraints, Martin made major

advances. I offer deep and abiding thanks for the influence these contributors have had on our ability to

move forward in realizing Martin Methodist College’s unique potential, especially under the Martin 2020

plan.

The very best plans do not chart radical new directions but instead extend and enhance an insti-

tution’s most valuable existing strengths. So it is with the Martin 2020 plan as we take this college’s

time-honored strengths—the dynamics that have made Martin such a treasure—and push them to the

limit. The plan takes its cue from this vision statement: Martin Methodist College is committed to being

the educational epicenter of south central Tennessee and a college of opportunity for our students,

community and church. Throughout the pages of this issue you will see clear evidence of progress on

realizing this vision for Martin Methodist. And we anticipate a significant transformation as the time ap-

proaches to celebrate the college’s 150th anniversary in 2020.

Martin Methodist College is a genuine treasure. It is with a heartfelt sense of gratitude that we offer

this tribute to those who have made this kind of impact possible—our benefactors. We hope you enjoy

this snapshot of a dynamic Martin Methodist. But more than that, we hope it makes you proud to be as-

sociated with a college that is truly on the move.

ebrated in this region. He transformed MMC’s magazine, The Columns, into a publication that can, to date, rival any college magazine in the country. He was an avid sports fan; therefore, it was only natural for Grant to meld himself into the sports program at MMC, announc-ing basketball games and becoming a voice for the Red Hawks. Grant was ac-tive in First Presbyterian Church of Pulas-ki, serving as an elder and as a member of the choir. He was a long-time mem-ber of the Rotary Club of Pulaski and is on the illustrious list of past presidents and Paul Harris fellows. However, One of the things Grant was ironically most noted for was his 20 years of dedicated service to the American Cancer Society, earning him the National St. George Award—the highest award given to Re-lay for Life volunteers.

Grant and Robin’s battle with cancer started years before Grant’s diagnosis. Robin had a brush with colon cancer many years ago that almost took her life, sparking Grant’s dedication to wage war on the disease that, in the end, took his. He commented in the Spring issue of The Columns that a friend encour-aged him while Robin was fighting can-cer by saying, “When you face a climb up a mountain you don’t look up to the top of the mountain but down at your feet. And you celebrate each step as a triumph, each moment as a blessing.”

Martin Methodist English professor and Associate Editor of The Columns, Kayla Wiggins, said of Grant, “More than anyone I know, Grant Vosburgh had the gift of celebrating each step and each moment.”

Grant leaves behind his wife, Rob-in; his two children, Justin and Amy; two brothers, Kip and Toby; one neph-ew; two nieces; and many others who loved him deeply and called him friend. He also leaves behind a legacy of kind-ness, humor, friendship, and talent that will forever be remembered and missed. Grant will always be a treasured mem-ber of the Martin Methodist family.

From my first day atMartin Methodist as the new director of communications, people associated with the college, be it on a profession-al, community, or student level, made the comment to me, “Wow! You have some big shoes to fill!”

That state-ment never bothered me, quite the op-posite, in fact. I am honored to have been

invited to join MMC and take over where Grant left off; I like to think that I’m continuing the work he started. If I can build relationships, make people laugh, move people to action, and love Martin Methodist with half the vigor as Grant, I will consider myself successful. He left an unforgettable mark on this community and on Martin Methodist.

“Silently, one by one, in the infinite meadows of heaven,

Blossomed the lovely stars, the forget-me-nots of the angels.”—Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Martin Methodist College and the surrounding community suffered a tragic loss Friday, September 18. Grant Vosburgh who served as director of communications for Martin Methodist for 15 years died quietly at his home with his wife, Robin, by his side.

Grant brought his family to Pulaski in 2001 from South Carolina to assume his new role as director of communi-cations, and from that moment, Grant began making his mark not only on Martin Methodist but also on the local community. Grant loved music and was one of the founders of the annu-al Song Writer’s Dream event at Martin Methodist that afforded him a solid place in the rich musical heritage cel-
