An enduring brotherhood Only a few hours before

commencement this May, 40 members of the St. Joe’s Class of 1962 gathered in the Mary Seaton Room at Kleinhans to reunite with their friends from 50 years ago. Most had graying hair – some had less than that – but they all had big smiles and contagious laughs as they greeted their former classmates at the Golden Jubilee Dinner.

While I did not have the pleasure of teaching any of these men at St. Joe’s, I was nonetheless inspired by the sight of these Jubilarians. These gentlemen – distinguished men in their communities – were back to their days of sitting around the cafeteria table with their friends, just like they did when they were seniors. It was as if 50 years had never passed at all!

Much has changed since 1962. Today’s hit songs are a far cry from Elvis Presley’s “Return to Sender,” and the questionably “real” housewives of Beverly Hills bear no resemblance to the Beverly Hillbillies. I’m also sure we all wish that the average cost of a new house was still $12,500 instead of today’s $234,000, or that gas was still 28 cents per gallon, instead of hovering around $4.00. Changes are evident everywhere.

The Class of '62 has also changed in the last 50 years. Since leaving 845 Kenmore Avenue, these men moved around the country, travelling back to their Golden Jubilee celebration from Michigan, Arizona, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Texas, Arkansas, California, New Jersey and Florida. They went from high school boys studying with Mr. Tell and Brother Ambrose to becoming leaders in

business, law, academia and a diversity of other fields.

Many men, many paths, but a common starting point ... St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. And though these men took very different turns in their lives, and accomplished a wide variety of things, they all returned to their alma mater to celebrate the institution at which their adult lives began. St. Joe’s taught them always to challenge themselves and strive for excellence, no matter where their lives would one day lead them.

This passion for achievement did more than inspire the Class of 1962 to excel in their personal and professional lives – it also united them, as a class, to give back to St. Joe’s. Together, they created the Thomas Moore '62 Memorial Endowment Fund – which you will read about on the next page – in memory of a beloved classmate who died fighting for his country in Vietnam. This call to action quickly resulted in the largest class year endowment fund to date, resulting in contributions of over $75,000, which brings the total to $176,000 and growing.

After the Golden Jubilee dinner, the Class of '62 watched their classmate and president of Trocaire College, Dr. Paul Hurley '62, give the Commencement address. Later, each man crossed the stage to collect his 50-year reunion certificate in front of the members of the Class of

2012. In doing so, they so wonderfully represented the lived reality of that which the Class of 2012 spoke so eloquently about – BROTHERS. These classes were separated by 50 years yet bonded in the traditions of St. Joe’s and St. John Baptist de La Salle – they are men respected and respect-filled, men who lead others by example, true gentlemen of integrity.

I have always loved this time of year and especially for moments like these: When generations of St. Joe’s men welcome, challenge and inspire each other. Just like the Class of '62, our newest alumni – the Class of 2012 – will soon go off to some of the finest universities and colleges across the country. Their lives are only beginning, and we’re sure that they too will take many different paths.

But no matter which path they take, we know they all started in the very same place: right here at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute.

Live Jesus in Our Hearts .... Forever.

50 Years Later: Class of '62 Gives Back

Thomas Jon Moore '62 died in a helicopter crash during the Vietnam War on April 19, 1967. The brave pilot was only 22 years old.

“Tom was regarded by all members of the platoon as the best pilot we had,” said a fellow soldier in a recent email. “He was the consummate professional. Tom was very intense when serious things were going on, but he was also a fun guy with a gentle side.”

Tom served in the Kowtum Province of Vietnam. He was highly decorated for heroism, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross for rescuing a ground patrol, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and the Air Medal.

But Tom was more than an esteemed pilot: He was also a beloved member of the St. Joe’s Class of 1962. During his high school years, he participated in Shamrock Club, the Benilde Society, Intramurals and Honor Society. His yearbook tells us: “Tom ... friends

included Fox, Flood and Furnald ... inhabits Clarence ... spends weekends at Pat’s or Eduardo’s ... a good friend of Mr. Tell ... works at Wish-in-Well restaurant.”

In memory of their fallen friend, the

Class of 1962 established and generously contributed toward the Thomas Jon Moore '62 Memorial Endowment Fund. Classmates pledged over $75,000 to the endowment in the months leading up to their Golden Jubilee Reunion. The fund now stands at over $176,000 – a momentous tribute to a man who touched so many lives.

“Tom Moore made a personal commitment when he put his life in harm's way to defend the ideals of our

great country,” said classmate Joe Ivers '62. “In my mind, what better way can we keep his spirit alive than by endowing funds in Tom Moore’s name? We can keep the dreams of young

men alive by providing them with an opportunity to attend St. Joe's.”

Richard Herdlein '62, a classmate of Tom and Joe, commented: “It seemed fitting to enhance this gift which will remain as a lasting testament to our class’ support for St. Joe’s and our care, concern

and commitment to Tom and to each other.”

As with all endowed funds at St. Joe’s, 5% will be directed toward tuition support (financial aid and scholarship awards) each year. And, every year in the future, students who receive that support will know that it came from generous contributions made in memory of Thomas Jon Moore, who lives in the hearts left behind.

Bianchi, Olin named Valedictorian, Salutatorian

A Family Thing

Valedictorian David Bianchi began his commencement speech with a phrase he once heard as an eighth grader: Be welcomed, be challenged, be inspired.

This wasn't only a slogan to the high achiever. Instead, it provided a framework for his time at St. Joe's and beyond.

"Now it is our time to welcome, challenge, and inspire those who we meet as our lives move forward," said David, addressing his classmates in cap and gown. "We can be the sign of faith that helps to create communities, workplaces, and families where all people are brothers and sisters."

David will attend Michigan State University in the fall. He is a National Merit Finalist and was recently named a member of the All-Western New

York Academic First Team by Buffalo Business First.

Salutatorian Julian Olin spoke about the bonds formed during his transformative high school experience at St. Joe's.

"I sincerely believe that the bonds and connections we’ve formed are eternal," said Julian. "A few life stages and many years from now, I know that my Joe’s boys will still be some of my dearest friends, and I can’t wait to see where life has led everyone at our reunions."

Olin, a National Merit Commended Student, will attend George Washington University in the fall. At St. Joe's, he was captain of the MMHSAA Championship-winning Varsity Soccer team and an active member of the

Recycling Club.

Both Bianchi and Olin received numerous scholarships for their academic achievements.

2012 By the Numbers

commencement2012

The Class of 2012 has a diversity of talents, achievements and passions. They've received millions in scholarships and grants for both huge universities and small colleges.

They represent areas across Western New York, and come from a wide array of Catholic, charter and public elementary schools. Here is a look at our newest alumni by the numbers:

Dr. Paul B. Hurley, Jr. '62 addresses the Class of 2012

7

Dr. Paul B. Hurley, Jr. '62, retiring president of Trocaire College, gave wisdom and insight to graduating seniors as this year's commencement speaker.

"I encourage you tonight to remember that each of us can be agents for what LaSalle preached," he said. "Go out, be a brother in spirit. Later in life, find opportunities to serve others."

Prior to the ceremony, Hurley reconnected with his former St. Joe's classmates at the Golden Jubilee celebration.

Hurley became the first lay president of Trocaire College in 1998. His 14-year run in that position was marked with historic growth in enrollment and expanded academic programs.

On May 30, 40 members of the St. Joe’s community gathered around a freshly-planted tree in front of the school. These alumni, students, friends, faculty, staff and administration joined Avi and Julie Israel in somber prayer.

The tree was planted in memory of their son, Michael Israel '08.

“Michael loved this school,” said Avi, addressing the crowd after the prayer service. “This place was a home to him, and we will continue to support it until our last days.”

Avi and Julie have already supported the school in a very big way since their son’s passing in 2011. Prior to the tree planting, the couple contributed toward establishing a summer film class in Michael’s honor

with English teacher Nick Hoerner.

“Michael loved reading, and he loved cinema,” said Mr. Israel. “We were looking at something we could do at St. Joe’s that would show Michael's passion for movies, and this course seemed like the perfect fit. We wanted to give kids with the same hobbies a place to explore them.”

During his time at St. Joe’s, Michael was instrumental in starting the

first Film Club. Now in its sixth year, the Film Club continues to offer analysis and discussion to its ever-increasing membership.

“Michael was a main reason why Film Club started,” said

Hoerner. “But he would still tell me, ‘We should offer something for more serious discussion, for more advanced cinematic dialogue.’ I hope this course will maintain his legacy and accomplish what he would have wanted.”

The new summer course, American Film: History, Theory and Technique will begin in July. This half-credit bearing class will provide a platform on which students can enjoy, analyze and reflect on films from a variety of American directors and genres.

“Sometimes schools focus on the students who are great athletes or great scientists,” said Avi. “Michael couldn’t be an athlete because of his Crohn’s Disease, but film and literature gave him an outlet. We want to give this same outlet for other students who have similar passions.”

“If this class had one student enrolled, it would be a success,” Julie added.

Presently, 15 students are enrolled in American Film: History, Theory and Technique. Most students enrolled are also involved in the Sci-Fi Club, Long Book Club or Film Club.

“Offering this course in honor of Michael says that every student who passes through these halls matters,” said Nick Hoerner. “It makes no difference whether you’re a musician, an artist, an athlete, or someone who likes to read books and watch films. Regardless of what a student is passionate about, he matters.”

Anthony Colucci III '76 is a busy man. Between employing 35 people at his highly successful law firm, Colucci & Gallaher, P.C., to traveling across the country to litigate on behalf of his clients, to staying active in local philanthropic agencies,Tony has a demanding schedule. But ask him to talk about St. Joe's, and he'll gladly block off his entire morning.

Tony's passion for St. Joe's goes beyond his alumnus status. As member of the St. Joe's Board of Trustees since 2006 and president from 2010 to 2012, Tony spearheaded advances in St. Joe's academics, technology and enrollment despite a challenging economy and shrinking Catholic school network.

"In the past six years, St. Joe's has become more sensitive to the fact that the community in which its operated is in a dynamic state," he said in his

downtown Buffalo office. "Western New York is changing. The world is changing. St. Joe's is keeping up with those changes, and leading the community."

A major part of thriving in a transitioning economic climate was the Board of Trustees' Strategic Plan, a 2010 initiative spearheaded by Colucci. The Plan was set into place to increase enrollment, expand curriculum and better prepare students for the world beyond St. Joe's by embracing technology and innovation.

"The school community is more focused than ever on its own priorities as a result of the Strategic Plan it's now implementing," he explained. "We reorganized the way we recruit students. We set high goals for our academics, and we were able to see them through. We continue to accelerate the use of technology in the classroom, and recently instituted the beginning of a One-to-One Initiative that will eventually provide all students with iPads, so they can master these tools before college."

iPads are a far cry from the technology that was available during Tony's senior year. However, he credits the lessons he learned in high school with leading him on his professional path.

"Jack Kenny taught me how to write, and Al Simmons taught me logic. Geometric theorems are the exact structure of a logical argument I'd use in a contract or courtroom."

Tony used these lessons from St. Joe's to earn an A.B. in Government from St. Lawrence University and a J.D. from the Catholic University of America. He began his law career with Damon Morey LLP in 1983, and later practiced law at Block & Colucci, P.C., with his father, Anthony Jr. '51, AFSC, before forming Colucci & Gallaher, P.C., in 1997.

Tony eventually continued his St. Joe's family legacy by sending his sons, Bryan '08 and Christopher '08, to the school.

"St. Joe's was a second home to Bryan and Christopher," said Tony. "They, like me, found the years at St. Joe's to be transformative."

These transformative years proved beneficial for Tony, who will leave the St. Joe's Board of Trustees after leading the school to heightened enrollment, expanded academic opportunities and a unified mission. On top of anticipating his son Thomas's St. Joe's graduation ceremony in 2018, Tony sees the school's future as bright.

"St. Joe's is in a tremendously sweet spot in a challenging academic environment. Our greatest challenge is to keep the momentum of serving as defined by the mission of the school, " he said. "We have a strong Board of Trustees who are more than capable of guiding this institution, of giving more people a St. Joe's education. The community deserves it. Our mission demands it."

This summer, the St. Joe's Board of Trustees will say goodbye to seven members. Board Chair Anthony J. Colucci III '76 is one of them. We asked him about his memories, accomplishments and observations about his time on the Board, as well as what he envisions for the future of the school he led.
