It has been a tradition at St. Joe’s, for at least as long as I can remember, to begin the academic year with a school community Liturgy. This year, a truly celebratory anniversary year, was no exception. Rather, to begin this very special sesquicentennial year, we specifically chose our opening school community Liturgy of the Holy Spirit as the occasion to begin our year-long celebration.

As we were preparing for our 150th year of educating the young men of Western New York it was clear from the beginning that the most appropriate way to begin this year was as we always have – with our opening school community Liturgy – a celebration of who we were, who we are, and who we will always be as our school moves forward for the “next” 150 years. And so, on Friday, September 17, 2010, we welcomed our principal celebrant, the Most Reverend Edward U. Kmiec, Bishop of Buffalo, brother Priests, our Deacons from St. Joe’s, Brother Dennis Malloy, FSC,

Visitor of the District of Eastern North American and our Christian Brothers who live in community here at St. Joe’s, our faculty and staff who share daily the mission of St. John Baptist de La Salle with their students, local dignitaries, members of our Board of Trustees, alumni, parents, friends, and … in a most special way … our students, those for whom we are here, and whose hearts we hope to touch as we seek to nurture, educate, and guide each according to his own talents and abilities.

Just as St. John Baptist de La Salle encourages each of us to remember “that we are in the Holy Presence of God,” this opening school Liturgy reminds us – as a Lasallian community – during this year and every year – who we truly are as a community. It is here, in these halls, in our classrooms, and yes, even on our athletic fields, site of our Liturgy, that our God is with us. This is God’s place; it is in this place that our Brothers, faculty and staff act as God’s ambassadors to the young men “entrusted to our care" This focus helps to remind us of the limitless goodness and potential in each person we encounter. It keeps us focused on

the good. Simply, every encounter with a student is an encounter with God.

As I welcomed everyone, I reminded them that as we get older, many of us go to great lengths to hide, or even lie about our age. Not so this day! Not so St. Joe’s! This opening celebration was the preamp in a year-long series of events which are a reaffirmation of the community that is St. Joe’s, and of our traditions associated with our school, most especially those associated with the Brothers of the Christian Schools and St. John Baptist de La Salle.

The spirit in the school and in our community that cool September morning was, as it is every day, a source of inspiration and reminder to all assembled as to why we keep alive the tradition started fifteen decades ago, in 1861, when six intrepid young Christian Brothers, at the invitation of our first bishop, Bishop Timon, made their way from New York City to take on an educational mission to young men here in Buffalo that would grow into what we celebrate today as St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute

Mr. John S."Jack" Cullen '54 †

It was never about him, it was never about how much he was able to give, it was always about others. It was a very sad day in the Western New York community and for the St. Joe's Family on September 12, 2010 when we learned that Mr. John “Jack” Cullen ’54 had passed away.

John was a wonderful benefactor to his beloved St. Joe’s; more than that, his philanthropy was out of a true sense of

thanksgiving to St. Joe’s for all that the school gave to him. Never did Jack ask for anything in return and whatever “public” recognition was granted was always our desire to do so – not his own.

Mr. Cullen's love of the theater is evident on a daily basis at St. Joe’s. Through his generosity in establishing an endowment that provides resources for the school’s fine arts department, the school is honored to continue to provide musical productions, Artists in Residence and so much more-in his memory.

His name, his dedication, and his love of St. Joe's will forever live on. As students, parents, alumni, and friends who knew Jack enter the Cullen Center for Excellence in Science, or the John S. and Charlotte C. Cullen Center for Music and Theatre Arts, or the Cullen Lecture Hall, they will quickly remember his infectious smile and jovial camaraderie; he would simply light up a room with his presence. Those who never had the pleasure of meeting him may ask, "Who was John?" His daughter Kathleen Cullen Hanwood would tell them, "My dad had an engineer's mind and a poet's soul."

Among his survivors are his brothers David M. ’61 and Robert Barry ’66, and brother-in-law Laurence E. Lauer ’55. Jack will be missed by all those who knew him and all of those who benefited from his generosity.

17th Annual Sports Hall of Fame The 17th Annual Sports Hall of

Fame Induction Ceremony was held on Friday, November 12TH. SJCI is proud to induct the following:

PAUL F. HUTZLER ’55 Prior to 1951, when he enrolled at St. Joe’s as a freshman, Paul really knew nothing about high school sports outside the city of Buffalo.

Because his older brother had kept some scrapbooks about Bennett High School in the Harvard and Yale Cups, Paul thought it would be a good idea to do the same for his school. By the time Paul was ready to graduate, his recordkeeping had taken on the City of Buffalo, the E.C.I.C. and the Niagara Frontier League. Eventually, Paul added the Niagara Orleans League and all of the Southern Tier schools. Paul’s “hobby” eventually became a full-time endeavor. His recordkeeping became the main source of history for Western New York high school sports. The New York State Athletic Administrators Association has honored Paul for his work compiling New York State sports records. He has also been recognized by Western New York High School Sports for his dedication and recordkeeping and by the Manhattan Cup for his basketball league recordkeeping. Paul provides material for both the Monsignor Martin football and basketball playoff programs, as well as for the New York State football playoff program. Paul has been a member of the St. Joe’s Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee since its inception in 1994 and has provided research, stats and information on every member of the Sports Hall of Fame.

ROBERT M. PASKE ’57 In his four years at St. Joe’s, Bob was a three-year member of the varsity football and baseball teams, and a two-year member

of the varsity basketball team. As a junior, Bob was an honorable mention All-Catholic selection in football. In his senior season, as the Marauders

quarterback and co-captain, Bob led the St. Joe’s football team to an undefeated season, and the Catholic High School Championship. andwas named first-team All-Catholic. He was awarded with an honorable mention as a WIG WAM Wiseman of America All-American, and received the Catholic Football League’s Most Valuable Player award. As a St. Joe's baseball player, Bob caught four no-hitters, and was a second-team All-Catholic selection as a senior. Bob was the starting point guard for the Marauders basketball team in his senior year. Throughout his four years at St. Joe’s, Bob played on five regular season championship teams -- one football, one basketball and three baseball. He was also part of two Georgetown Cup championships and one Notre Dame Cup Championship.

JAMES D. O’BRIEN ’71was a two sport all-star during his time at St. Joe’s. On the football field, he led the Marauders rushing attack during his junior and senior years, and in the

spring, he brought his speed out onto the cinders as a dominant runner for the track and field team. As a junior, Jim rushed for 484 yards, scored nine touchdowns, and was named a second-team All-Catholic by The Courier-Express. As a senior, Jim tied the league scoring record with 114 points. He ran for an incredible 940 yards on 159 attempts for an average of 5.9 yards per attempt. His efforts earned him first-team All-Catholic honors from the Courier-Express and The Buffalo News. In addition, Jim was a three-time All-Catholic in track and field. He earned an All-American Honorable Mention, was awarded the Bill Kelly Award, and won the 100 and 200 yard dash races at the All-Catholic meet during his senior year. Jim was the co-holder of the league’s 100 yard dash record (10.0 seconds). He set Western New York records in the indoor and outdoor mile relay. He was a member of the league record-breaking 880 relay team, mile relay team, and the Inter-Diocesan Meet record-breaking distance medley foursome relay team.

STANLEY F. COLLESANO ’86 was the only runner in the history of the Catholic league to be the two-mile champion three years in a row. Additionally, he was

All-Catholic Champ in the mile and two-mile relay as a senior. Stan took second in the mile as a junior and third as a sophomore. He also finished third in the 4x100 as a junior. Stan finished third in the All-Catholic cross country meet as a sophomore, second as a junior and was the All-Catholic Champion as a senior. Stan was the Cobleskill and Binghamton Invitational Champion and the Waterloo Track Invitational Champion in the 2-mile as a senior. At the time of the Waterloo race, Stan held the fastest 2-mile time in the state. He competed in the open 3000 meters at the Penn Relays, finishing 12th overall (the winner of the race set the high school American record for 3000 meters on that day).

BRYAN J. KNIGHT ’97 was a three-year starter for the Marauder football team and co-captain during his junior and senior years. As a sophomore, Bryan was named first-

team All-Catholic defensive end after recording 43 solo tackles, 18 assists, six sacks and three fumble recoveries. In his junior year, Bryan grabbed 11 receptions for 82 yards as a tight end, while recording 90 solo tackles, 32 assists, 10 sacks, two interceptions, and one blocked punt, earning first-team All-Catholic defensive end honors for the second straight year. During his senior year, Bryan racked up 69 solo tackles, 19 assists, 12 sacks and one fumble recovery. He also hauled in 24 receptions for an astonishing 625 yards, seven touchdowns and four two-point conversions, again being named a first-team All-Catholic, but this time as a tight end. Bryan was named first-team All Western New York by The Buffalo News, first-team All-State by the New York State Sportswriters Association, and received the team’s Most Valuable Player Award.

Started in 1970, as a way to collect food for those less fortunate, the annual Food Basket drive at St. Joe's, has grown from a small collection of food in the back of a car to where it now fills two large trucks of non-perishable items. The success of the annual drive rests upon the school-wide embodiment of our Lasallian ideal to help the poor and reach out to the needy. More than 60 students volunteer and work countless hours to create a

Why Brother Pompian?Brother Pompian, who

was known affectionately to his students as “Brother Sub,” entered the Christian Brothers in Montreal in May, 1856. He arrived in Buffalo on September 1,

1861, as one of the six Brothers who founded St. Joe's at the request of Bishop Timon, to be the sub-director of St. Joseph’s College. He was named director of the school in 1880, before being reassigned to Manhattan College in 1889.

BROTHER POMPIAN HONORS ACADEMY " The institution has provided an education in academic, commercial, and scientific studies and a preparatory course for each. The same branches of study will be continued in the new school but in keeping with the motto of the school, 'Excelsior!' they will be advanced. Special attention will be given to the scientific studies including electrical engineering, for which the resources of Buffalo are most favorable." From the 1897 news clip from the Buffalo Morning Enquirer.

St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute launched The Brother Pompian Honors Academy (BPHA) this year. The program will firmly nurture a comfortable, stimulating environment for the intellectual student at SJCI through advanced coursework, extra-curricular enrichment, service to the community and social camaraderie. The intent of the BPHA will be to instill in the student habits of lifelong learning and questioning, the cultivation of a life spent in pursuit of big ideas, and the responsibility to use his intellectual gifts in service to others.

St. Joseph’s College experienced financial hardship in 1891 and closed its doors for two years. Attempts to become re-established in the Buffalo community following its two-year closure would not be effective until Brother Pompian returned to lead the school. Brother Pompian returned to the position of director in 1896 and can be credited with acquiring property in downtown Buffalo where the new St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute would be established at 1238 Main Street in 1900. Under the steady direction of Brother Pompian, the school would expand its enrollment and continue its reputation for academic excellence in downtown Buffalo until its eventual move to Kenmore Avenue in 1950.

program that motivates and inspire their fellow students to share what they have with others in need. This is a student-run program from getting the boxes donated, loading the trucks, and rising very early every morning to open the donation center.

The Donation Center, located in the Student Commons at St. Joe’s, will run from November 22 - December 16th from 7:00 am – 8:00 am each day, donations are welcome. On December 17th the entire student body will assist in the

loading of the large delivery trucks with the donated food after the Christmas Assembly. On December 17th more than 20 students will deliver the food items to the Warming House in Olean, NY.

On September 15, 2010 the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 56th annual National Merit Scholarship Program were announced by officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Two of those students, seniors, Jonathan A. Binns and Andrew P. McGloin were from St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,400 scholarships, worth more than $36 million, that will be offered next spring, as well as the designation of National Merit Finalist.

Commended students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2011 competition by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Singin' with the Saints & Live! Get In Line On Sale Now

The founder of the Brothers of Christian Schools, St. John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of teachers, established a welcoming Christian Community. Like Jesus Christ and the saints, we share our gifts as students and teachers, staff and administration, and coaches and directors, all for a single ultimate purpose; we are called to touch the hearts of others.

It was with this call, the students, under the direction of Jim Deiotte, put together the CD "Singin' with the Saints." Production of the CD, the mixing, sound quality under the direction of Glenn Bernadis of GB Audio, with the assistance of students Gregory Paladino '10 and Patrick Hyzy '10 and many others. The in studio, hands-on experience was a first for the students and the end result is a beautiful collection of music.

It is not just the music inside that lends itself to beauty. The casing and cover design was undertaken by Catherine Ward, who brought Brian Grunert ’88, award winning designer and Matthew Renzi ’05, graphic designer together with the student to create the cover.

After a banner year for the Jazz Lab Band, including playing in Virginia Beach at the Music in the Parks-Festival and winning Best Jazz Ensemble - at the festival overall, best ensemble for the entire festival - which included concert bands and choirs - and obtained a perfect score.

(This was the first time in the 30 year history of the festival that a group had received a perfect score) The group decided to do a live recording of their annual end of the school year Cullen Center concert. They dedicated the recording to this years 150th anniversary celebration. The recording features the numbers performed at the festival in Virginia Beach, as well and "Escola De Samba," a commissioned composition and arrangement written for the band by renowned jazz composer and arranger Jeff Jarvis, formerly of Buffalo. During my high school years I was fortunate enough to call St. Joe’s my home. I’ve

been mostly away from “home” for the past 23 years, visiting my school only occasionally for special events. I recently attended parent’s night for my freshman son. This event brought feelings of both excitement and anxiety. I wondered, "How much has changed? Will I know my way around to the various class rooms? Will my former teachers, some of who now teach my son, remember me? Did I leave an impression? They certainly did on me." I was soon to find out.

What a facility! The school campus had grown by at least two major building additions and a new sports complex. Finding my way around my own home was going to be a challenge. Memories of the freshman building across the street and Mr. Chaya’s office seemed like yesterday. Walking to lunch and gym from that building to the main building was a daily event, and trying not to get splashed by the Kenmore Avenue traffic on wintery and rainy days was always a challenge. Freshmen were separated from the upper classmen for most of the school day, but that has changed, and now my son is part of the general school population as a freshman. He has proclaimed to me that St. Joe’s

already feels like “home” to him. Prouder I could not be.

The buildings at the time seemed dated, but homey. What a difference 23 years makes. My son is now enjoying a beautiful campus that includes the commons, a new science wing, a weight room, a computer lab, the performing arts center, a renovated cafeteria, and a beautiful sports complex, to name just a few. As I experienced these changes, I wondered what happened to the weight room and music department in the basement and to the Apple IIE computers, and I swore I could still taste the cinders from the track from all the miles I ran while Mr. Roland was yelping at me and my teammates: “Let’s go you ham –n- eggers!”

Academics have always been a focus at St. Joe’s, but what’s up with all these advanced placement classes? During my time, only juniors and seniors were offered AP class opportunities. Now my son has the chance to start working towards AP credits as a freshman and sophomore. He is learning things as a freshman that I learned as a junior. St. Joe’s gave me a head start in life and now it is for my son.

St. Joe’s was a sports power house when I attended. It seemed like anything short of a supremacy cup was a failure. Even as important sports were at the time, we didn’t have certain sports like lacrosse. The wrestling and crew programs were in their infancy. We had only a few hockey teams. The school now offers more types of sports and what seems to be a team for every skill level of player.

Our brotherhood has no comparison. Come across any fellow alumnus, young or old, and say the words, “St. John the Baptist De LaSalle, pray for us,” and he will automatically respond with, “live Jesus in our hearts.” What greater bond do we share than our faith? From all that I can see, this has not changed at St. Joe’s.

My most profound memories are with my teachers, my mentors. These Christian men and women of knowledge and character helped shape me and my fellow classmates into men of integrity. These teachers, who by their words and actions, demonstrated on a daily basis that they viewed their tenure at St. Joe’s not as job, but as a mission. My son is fortunate enough to have a few of these people in his life as his mentors today. I can proudly say that Mr. Scott, Mr. Jakiel, Mr. Simmons, Mr. Roland and Brother Joseph Reed are among the inspirational figures who helped mold me as a young man. How lucky is my son.

As I walked the halls, visiting parts of the school that never existed when I went to St. Joe’s and seeing many fresh faces, I was comforted by the familiar faces of my teachers and the brotherhood that still strongly bonds us together as the St. Joe’s family. No matter how long you’ve been away, there is no place like home. The campus bricks and mortar have changed, but the school spirit and mission is the true essence and is still flourishing today. I have never been more confident that my son is in good hands. Now that I have the opportunity, I look forward to personally thanking the faculty and staff who continue to make our home the special place that it is.

Now that my son Bradley is a freshman, I am again regularly visiting the SJCI campus at 845 Kenmore Avenue. The drop off, pickups and sporting events have given me a chance to visit the campus frequently and I am struck by just how different it is from when I graduated in 1975. The campus facilities are so very different. When I was a student the building was a two story rectangular box. No “commons,” no science center, no elevator and certainly no astro turf was on the campus (had it even been invented?). My class was one of historical significance, we were the first class to occupy the once fabulous “Freshman Building” across Kenmore Avenue and there certainly is no Freshman Building anymore. Cross at the signal or you better check the detention list for your name. And, we were quite proud of the one computer at the school that was, at the time, cutting edge technology!

The new St. Joe’s has a much different look, but a very similar feel to 1975. While the buildings have changed, the school atmosphere has remained very much the same. Strong friendships and a sense of brotherhood still permeate the building. A strong sense of being part of a community and of being a part of something much bigger than yourself. St Joe’s students still enjoy a great sense of school spirit punctuated by a wonderful cross town rivalry. That sense of Marauder Pride has continued for many years and this shared sense of brotherhood is so easily communicated from students, to parents, to alumni. It is evidenced by warm greetings, a shared prayer at every meeting or merely by slowly repeating the words “football 50 to 26.”

Donald G. Jacobi '30

Don Jacobi was 6 years old when The Influenza Pandemic of 1918, which would claim over 50 million lives, broke out. When Don came

down with flu symptoms, there were no antibiotics. “Rather than send me to the hospital, my doctor, Dr. Hurley on Seneca Street, sent me home to die. Father Heard came to the house from St. John the Evangelist Church on Seneca Street and administered the Sacrament of Last Rites. My siblings were moved out of the house. My mother and father served butter soup by day and a shot of whiskey at night.” Miraculously, Don survived, to lead a life as a star baseball player, a proud alumnus of St. Joe’s and Notre Dame, a distinguished clothier, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, a treasured actor, and so much more.

Don, who was the honored guest at the 17th annual Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony on November 12th, arrived at St. Joe’s in 1926, when the school was “just” 65 years old. Mr. Jacobi has been a part of St. Joe’s storied history for more than 85 of the school’s 150 year history.

Legendary John Barden recruited Don while he was an 8th grader at St. Margaret’s School on Hertel Avenue. “I was ready to attend Bennett High School with my pals when Mr. Barden appeared on our porch one summer day. My mother introduced Mr. Barden saying, ‘He is from St. Joe’s. You will

be going there." "There" was 1238 Main Street, the school’s location since 1900. When Don arrived at St. Joe’s, he was greeted by Brother Philip (St. Joe’s principal from 1924-30 and leader in the acquisition of the property which became 845 Kenmore Ave.), who told the incoming Class of 1930, “You will be the first class to graduate from our new location, on Kenmore Avenue.” Don and his classmates were not sure what to make of that; they knew Kenmore was just a dirt path, and the city dump was not far away. But, they had a tremendous time during their four years on Main Street, as did each class, until the school on Kenmore was first occupied in 1950.

Certainly, one of the highlights of Don’s high school was playing baseball for the American Legion Post 721, sponsored by the Burke Brothers, during the summer of 1929. The team was made up, primarily, of St. Joe’s students, playing under the guidance of legendary baseball coach and athletic director Joe Brown. “The Burkes,” as they came to be known, won the National American Legion Junior World Series, achieving a 27-1 record on their way to the championship. “No one expected us to win it all. Heck, they didn’t even give us much of a chance against the guys from across town.” But Joe Brown drilled the team on the fundamentals. Don states, "He's the first one I ever heard say you have to think [the game]. He said the only way we were going to win is if we think." It’s a lesson Don carries with him to this day.

To highlight the significance of “The Burkes” victory: President Hoover threw out the first pitch for the opening game of the tournament, each game was broadcast on the radio back in Buffalo, and public address speakers in front of the News Office at Main and Seneca Streets carried the radio broadcasts of the games. Plus, Don and his teammates returned to a hero’s welcome in Buffalo, with a ticker-tape parade down Main Street that attracted over 50,000 spectators.

Don had a key double and scored a critical run in the deciding game of the three-game championship series. And he met “the Babe” (George Herman Ruth) during the championship run. “Babe told us, ‘You’re in the big time now. Start acting like gentlemen,’ stated Don. “It’s another one of life’s simple lessons.”

Don went on to graduate from the University at Notre Dame and run one of the best-known haberdasheries in Buffalo. The University of Notre Dame honored Don with their “Man of the Year” award in 1959, and their “Volunteer of the Year” award in 2009. He was inducted into the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame for amateur athletes in 2003. Five of Don’s nephews are St. Joe’s alumni: Bob ’40, Dick ’42, Ray ’46, Marty ’49, and Joe ’55.

When you see Don on campus, be sure to ask him about his acting days—in “Best Friends” and “The Natural.” And, by all means, let him know that you are glad he made it back for the Sports Hall of Fame night ... and back in 1918.

In the school's tradition of educating the "whole" student, St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute (SJCI) strives to be an educational leader within the visual and performing arts and as such, offers an extensive curriculum as well as extracurricular opportunities for our students. In order to further enhance the students' experience in the field of visual and performing arts, the school invites professional artists into the school to share their craft with the students. The approach is a hands-on teaching method that has the artists working directly with the students. The purpose of the Artists in Residence program is to provide educational opportunities in the arts, which go beyond those that regular department faculty members can offer, exposing students to a high quality level of creative work with professional artists.

Through the generosity of a grant from Target Foundation over the past several years, SJCI has been able to increase involvement of many alumni, who are also artists, to work with our students "in residence" in a variety of workshop formats across many disciplines from dance to sculpture. This year Target increased the grant to help us offer even more workshops to celebrate our 150th anniversary. In the spring we will host "The Celebration of the Arts" at St. Joe's in

part with many of these same artists. This event is comprised of present and former students, providing current students with an opportunity to perform with professionals as part of the year's festivities. Some of the current Artists In Residence include:

Drama Workshop with Vincent O'Neill: a Dublin-born, internationally acclaimed actor and former member of Ireland's celebrated Abbey Theatre, came to Western NY in 1985. He founded the Irish Classical Theater and continues as its director. His work also includes an affiliation with University of Buffalo's Theatre Department. The students of St. Joe's can get an all-around view of professional theatre and mime from Mr. O'Neill and recently had a workshop with him in October.

Sculpture Workshop with Larry Griffis III '70- is a local sculptor as well as an alumnus. Mr. Griffis studied in Italy earlier in his career and has had a lifelong interest in sculpture. He worked in the toy businesses for Fisher-Price, Hasbro and Toy Biz. Mr. Griffis works in life size bronze sculptures, some of which adorn the HSBC Arena, John Carol University, Canisius College - and have been acquired by many private collectors and institutions. He works with SJCI students in sculpture. Thanks to Target, this year's program was increased from two sessions to six throughout the month of October and into November.

Painting with A. J. Fries '90: A.J. is a local painter as well as an alumnus. He is well known for his ultra-realistic renderings

of everything from Twinkies to water droplets. The Twinkies painting can be seen as part of the permanent collection at the Burchfield-Penney Art Gallery, and the Albright-Knox recently purchased and hung his oil painting of the light on his bedroom ceiling entitled "Light" as part of their permanent collection. Later in the year, Mr. Fries will be working with our students in a second oil painting workshop.

Veterans of the U.S Armed Forces St. Joe’s is honored to have had so many of our alumni serve in the United States

armed forces. The school is planning to immortalize our alumni who have so bravely given their

lives for their country with a memorial plaque within the school. If you know the names of an alumnus who died while serving in the military, please let us know.

We are also looking for help identifying any and all former students who left school, prior to their graduation, to join the military. We will honor these men with an honorary degree during the 150th Commencement celebration in May 2011.

R. Carlos Carballada '52 has been named Hispanic Business Person of the Year for 2010 by the Rochester, NY Hispanic Business Association, an affiliate of the Rochester Business Alliance.

Joseph F. Bieron, Ph.D. '55 received the LaSalle Medal from Canisius College during it’s undergraduate commencement ceremony on May 22, 2010. The LaSalle Medal is the Alumni Association’s most distinguished award and is presented to individuals who have made substantial contributions to advance the interest of Canisius College.

Kevin J. Brinkworth '59 will be given the Russell J. Gugino Award, which recognizes University at Buffalo alumni who have made significant contributions of time and resources to the university's athletic programs, at the University at Buffalo’s Athletics Hall of Fame

induction ceremony in September, 2010.

Peter L. Manion '59 and his wife Susan, were named the 2010 Naples Daily News Outstanding Citizens. The couple rescued FunTime Early Childhood Academy in Naples, FL from closure, making it possible for hundreds of children to have a strong start to their education. Their dedication and service to the community was acknowledged at the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner in May.

1960's

Brother Joseph Radice, FSC '61 has been elected president of the residence council of De La Salle Hall in Lincroft, NJ. The Purpose of the council is to review policies and ideas of the De La Salle Community.

Richard J. Herdlein '62, associate professor of student personnel administration at Buffalo State College, has been elected vice president for Erie County of the Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Fulbright Association. Richard completed the Fulbright Senior Specialist Award at the University Catholique de Lille, France.

Frederick E. Brace '63 retired after 39 years in pharmaceutical and medical sales. He currently serves as Board Chairperson for the University District Community Development Association. He is also the Housing Court Liaison for the University District COB Housing Court.

Patrick J. McGroder III '63 has been named one of the 500 Leading

Lawyers in America by Lawdragon for the third consecutive year. Patrick is the only Phoenix, Arizona based personal injury plaintiff’s lawyer to be included on this list.

1970's

Gary M. Crosby '71 was promoted to the newly-created position of chief operating officer at First Niagara Financial Group. Gary joined the company in July 2009 as chief administrative officer.

William M. Collins '72, a principal of Travers Collins & Company, and a 1976 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, has been named to St. Bonaventure’s Board of Trustees. Bill will serve on the marketing and athletics committees of the board.

Richard J. Schieb Jr. '73 has been named the 2010 – 2011 Heritage Centers Foundation Chairman. The Heritage Centers Foundation creates opportunities for growth, independence, productivity, choice and satisfaction for children and adults with disabilities, and their families, by providing comprehensive quality services.

Dennis R. Black '74, vice president of student affairs for the University at Buffalo, was rewarded by The Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education with the 2010 Fred Turner Award for his continued dedication to students' academic experience. Dennis was the sole recipient of this award this year.

Mark V. Mistretta '75 of Wendel Duchscherer Architects and Engineers, and current member of the St. Joe’s Board of Trustees, was honored by the Olmsted Parks Conservancy on July 16, 2010, as a strong park advocate.

David J. Nasca '75, president and CEO at Evans Bank NA, and current member of the St. Joe’s Board of Trustees, was named corporate chair of the Catholic Charities Appeal 2010.

Kevin J. Helfer '76 has been chosen by Buffalo Mayor, Byron Brown, to serve as commissioner of Buffalo’s newly created Parking Department.

Baseball Hall of Fame at its 14th annual banquet on September 15, 2010 at the Lake Erie Italian Club in Blasdell.

Richard A. Schaab '84, current head coach of the varsity crew team at St. Joe’s, was a member of the West Side Rowing Club masters men D-eight (average age 50), which won gold at the 128th Royal Canadian Henley Masters Regatta in St. Catherine’s, Ontario.

Joseph L. DiLeo '85, CEO and managing partner of the Buffalo Agency Insurance and Financial Services, a general agency of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co., was featured in a Buffalo Business First article entitled “MassMutual jumps to top of life insurance in the region.”

David L. Starck '86 placed first in the 2010 Lightning North American championship Regatta. 80 boats from several countries including Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Argentina, Canada, Australia, and USA competed. The regatta was held in Toms River, NJ - sailing on Barnetgat Bay, Aug 8-13.

Daniel T. Cavarello '88 has been appointed as a Town of Tonawanda Judge after the resignation of former Town Judge, John J. Flynn.

Jeffrey C. O’Bannon '88 was named director of property management for Ciminelli Real Estate Corp. He will oversee all building and facility operations for Ciminelli-managed properties. He has 13 years of property management and commercial real estate experience, most as director of buildings for Ellicott Development Co.

Mark E. Mark is the past president of the St. Joe’s Board of Trustees and a current member of the Board.

Daniel S. O’Neil '81, retired Major United States Army, is the Assistant Director of Central Florida Information Technology Operations for Barry University. He is happily married with two sons.

Bartholomew F. McGloin,'83, a general services partner with Dopkins & Co. LLP, and current member of the St. Joe’s Board of Trustees, has been approved to receive the designation of Certified in Financial Forensics from the American Institute of CPAs. Bart earned the Certified Fraud Examiner Designation three years ago.

Sean P. Bieter '84 has been named a partner in the Buffalo law office of Goldberg Segalla. Sean has extensive experience representing employers involved in various labor and employment matters including collective bargaining, contract administration and employment discrimination law.

1990's

Capt. Jason P. Pax '93, U.S. Air Force, piloted one of the planes used in the pre-game fly-by over Ralph Wilson Jr. Stadium prior to the Buffalo Bills home opener on September 12. Captain Pax has been awarded the Air Medal and Air Force Achievement Medal for missions over Afghanistan. He also is a Distinguished Flying Cross nominee for single-sortie achievement against Taliban and al-Qaida forces. Pax is a weapon system operator assigned to the 34th Bomb Squadron at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho. St. Joe's would like to thank Jason, and the rest of our alumni who are serving, or have served their country in military duty.

Emilio L. Colaiacovo '94 was elected to a three-year term as a director in the Erie County Bar Association on June 11, 2010. He also spoke on June 21, 2010 at a seminar sponsored by the New York State Bar Association. His presentation was “Campaign Finance in a nutshell” in which he discussed basic campaign finance laws and rules in addition to the application of the Federal Election Campaign Act.

Joseph M. Cormier '94 has become executive vice president and chief financial officer of Global Defense Technology & Systems, Inc., a provider of mission-critical,

technology-based systems, solutions and services for national security agencies and programs of the United States government.

Father Mark J. Noonan '94 has received his first pastorate as pastor of two Orleans County parishes, St. Mary Parish, Holley, and St. Mark Parish, Kendall. He previously served as parochial vicar at St. Amelia Parish, Tonawanda, and following his 2007 ordination, Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Orchard Park. Father Noonan’s appointment is for six years.

Joseph M. Tripi '96 has received the Attorney General’s Award for Outstanding Contributions By a New Employee. Joseph was honored specifically for his “Outstanding Efforts to Dismantle Gang Activity” in Buffalo, NY.

Peter M. Johnson '98 is producing a documentary called "Together We Stand: The Story of the 1958 UB Bulls." He began work on the project last December and it is scheduled for release in September, 2010.

Michael J. Baco '99 has received a new position as the marketing manager for GAP International, Latin America. His territory will be Mexico and Latin America. Michael was first sent to Singapore and Chile for training. He is currently living in Chicago, IL.

David A. Poe '03 was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, 10th Mountain Infantry Division, U.S. Army at Fort Drum, NY. He served as Platoon Leader during a one year deployment in Afghanistan. Upon his return in January of 2010, David was awarded a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars (one for Valor), a Campaign Ribbon and was nominated for a U.S. Army

Achievement Award. David was promoted to Captain in March, 2010.

Christopher J. Hogan '05, a graduate of the Boston College-Carrol School of Management, is employed in Boston with Price Waterhouse Coopers and is in the process of completing his masters degree in accounting. He has passed all tests for licensing as a certified public accountant.

completed his junior year at SUNY Maritime College, Bronx, NY, earning Admiral’s List (First Honors) spring 2010. Bergen continued work/study session on a 90 day summer program cruise on the Empire State VI while visiting the ports of Malaga, Spain, Athens, Greece, Malta and Dublin, Ireland. He also crewed on Maritime’s Off Shore Sailing team, which won the Shields Trophy for the second consecutive year; a record achievement as the first school to win two consecutive years.
