COBHA Spring Semester Faculty
Elizabeth Jones, Executive Director and Program Instructor
Author of Awaken to Healing Fragrance, Elizabeth founded COBHA
in 1997 and owns Elizabeth Van Buren, Inc. with Larry Jones. She
earned a BS Degree from Skidmore College, Sara-toga Springs, NY
and received a Secondary Credential and a Masters Degree from UC
Berkeley. She is a graduate of the California School of Herbal Stud-
ies, Forestville, CA. Elizabeth was on the education committee at Alli-
ance for International Aromatherapy, working to put national stand-
ards in place. She promotes the use of plant energy in the form of
Essential Oils, Herbs & Nutrition for her own community & globally.
Susan Clingingsmith, CEOT, EOT, is a COBHA gradu-
ate and has received her Master’s from ILM, giving her a clear, tangi-
ble wealth of knowledge and experience. Using insight and a sense of
humor, she inspires and engages participants through her passionate,
playful, and elegant teaching style. Encouraging a shift in self-esteem,
creativity, inner wisdom, emotional health, and spiritual awareness,
she is a successful, multidimensional entrepreneur who owns two
companies and is the current VP of COB-HA.
Kaysi Contreras, Certified Aromatherapist, and COBHA
graduate is passionate about the power of natural medicine from the
food we eat to the volatile compounds extracted from plants in the
form of essential oils and hydrosols. Kaysi is dedicated to her work
with youth, and teaches in schools, hospitals, and for Stanford’s
SMASH summer program. She is a wellness practitioner for LUMA
in downtown Santa Cruz working with clients one on one, and creates
proprietary custom blends for business branding.
Alice Duvernell, Workshop Instructor, is a French Ethno
botanist who first started distillation and botanical extractions in Bra-
zil. She has a great passion for botanical extractions, organic cosmetol-
ogy and foods for beauty. She has been teaching in the Bay area for 9
years and has developed curriculums in the domains of botanical ex-
tractions and distillation, bee products, natural cosmetics, and any
subjects related to the amazing capacity of nature to heal.
Christine Hassler, Workshop Instructor, Christine’s
grandmother taught her "kitchen garden medicine" in south-
ern Germany, showing her how to make sweet cakes with the blossom
of Elder bush, and cough syrup from the berries. While living in Big
Sur, California, she explored Sage bush, Manzanita berries and the
Yerba Santa, preparing teas to share with friends. She has studied with
Michael Tierra, Christopher Hobbs, and Jeanne Rose.

Christine Hassler is a long-time herbalist
from the Trinity Mountains, teaching the
ancient tradition of creating preparations to
benefit your well-being. Touch, smell and
taste plant materials in this hands-on work-
shop; make tinctures, elixirs, herbal oils and salves to take home, we will en-
joy tea infusions.
Botanical extracts 101 for the herbal formulator
with Alice Duvernell

In this demo and hands on class, students will learn the
therapeutic mathematical ratios to make quality botani-
cal extractions in alcohol, glycerin and oil. These ex-
tracts are very versatile and can be used for medicine,
perfume and cosmetic formulas.

In this unique seminar about the queens of the
garden, students will discover the extraordinary
properties of royal jelly, propolis, pollen, honey
and beeswax. These raw materials are not
only an untapped source for beauty, good
health, and a strong immune system, they are also powerful ingredients to add
to cosmetic and medicinal formulation for their anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, re-
mineralizing and rejuvenating properties.

The Level I Foundation Course is a rich introduc-
tion to the essential oil experience. The information
provides you with a valuable, lifelong reference
guide to the healing properties of essential oils. In-
cludes Distillation methods/Chemistry / Physiology of
skin/Immune and Lymphatic systems/methods
of application/safety data/Emotions/History of EO
in ancient cultures, and more. Students are intro-
duced to case studies and custom blending, and
study 23 essential oil profiles.
Level II–Course 9– Communication Business Skills $340 with Sue Clingingsmith 20hrs/CEU’s
5 Wednesdays May 9–June 6 5:00-9.30 p.m.
This course focuses on the ethics of being an
Essential Oil Practitioner. Through communica-
tion and business skills, students learn how to
develop a deeper relationship between the client
and the practitioner. Also covered: How to
start a business, record keeping, legal considera-
tions, creating a business card, brochure and
business plan.

The abstract and mysterious quality of
essential oils become a living botanical
reality as students study the plants of their origin.
Students study botanical classification and structure,
photosynthesis, flower reproduction, as well as ex-
ploring various plant parts. This class includes field
trips to local botanical gardens. The public may
join the class for a one day UCSC Arboretum tour.

A life-changing experience for students and
clients. We will share our love of essential oils
and herbs with the elderly, veterans, mentally
ill, and the homeless. Presenting oils to smell, to experience in hand
massage, to evoke memories, and to provide the education to make
each visit meaningful. Keeping an observation journal is the only home-
work, no exam. We offer a compassionate service for those in our com-
munity who need more one on one connection.
Come learn, expand your mind, create new and deeper
friendships, understand your ability to heal with plants,
and enjoy sharing the fruits of your education.
