New Jersey’s newest senior living complex comes to New Providence with bright expectations at Lantern Hill, the new, distinctive Erickson Living continuing care retirement community.

Lantern Hill is situated on a scenic 20-acre campus on the corner of Mountain Avenue and South Street. The site was formally used as an office and sales complex for local industries including Allstate Insurance and Lucent Technologies.

“We are thrilled to open our doors this summer and welcome our pioneer residents to their new home,” said Executive Director Patricia Swan. “Residents will enjoy an active and secure retirement lifestyle on our beautiful campus and enjoy the culture, entertainment, and natural beauty of the New Providence area.”

The independent living community provides a vibrant lifestyle to seniors with abundant amenities and a broad spectrum of activities and services, complemented with integrated healthcare and wellness.

The large, central building, called Union Square, offers all kinds of services and conveniences—and it’s a short indoor stroll from every Lantern Hill apartment home. There are even 83 apartment homes located right in the building. In Union Square, residents can enjoy a delicious, chef-prepared meal in one of three on-site restaurants, swim laps in the all-season pool, or relax and pursue a lifelong interest in the Art Studio or Library.

Lantern Hill’s on-site medical center will be operated by

Summit Medical Group, the largest and oldest physician-owned, multidisciplinary medical practice in New Jersey. Residents can enjoy prompt appointments in a location that’s just steps from home.

Residents will move into the 161 independent living apartments of Phase 1, which sold out in 10 weeks, this summer followed by the opening of 85 continuing care residences. Within the first few years, the community will add 114 more independent

living apartment homes, for a total of 275. Some of the other amenities include a fitness center, transportation, 24-hour concierge services, secure underground parking and a theater.

Erickson Living is a national firm that develops and manages continuing care retirement communities. They are headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. For more information on Lantern Hill, including renderings of the buildings and floor plans of the beautiful apartments, visit www.lanternhillcommunity.com.

The Reeves Reed Arboretum recently re-named their education building, the Mary Reinhart Stackhouse Education Center, in

appreciation and recognition of the legacy of Mary Stackhouse.

The late Mrs. Stackhouse was a great fan and generous supporter of the Arboretum. An avid golfer and naturalist, Mrs. Stackhouse established her Foundation to specifically support environmental causes, including the preservation and growth of natural open space. Thanks to the Stackhouse Foundation, Reeves-Reed Arboretum has been able to grow the Arboretum’s staffing capacity with the addition of a second environmental educator and three paid horticultural internships.

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey has received

prestigious “Imagine Your Parks” grant award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The grant of $25,000.00 will support the residency and exhibition of artist Matthew Jensen who will bring 4 New Jersey landscapes to life in a museum setting. The Art Center is the only museum in New Jersey to be awarded an “Imagine Your Parks” grant, and only one of fifty-one “Parks” grants nationwide. “Imagine Your Parks” is

a grant initiative from the National Endowment for the Arts created in partnership with the National Park Service to support projects that use the arts to engage people with memorable places and landscapes of the National Park System. Jensen, a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow, has exhibited at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, the Brandywine River Museum and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. His work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, the New York Public Library and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Summit Police Chief Robert Weck worked with the congregation at Fountain Baptist

Church to facilitate a group dialogue on police interactions with African American youth. During the discussion, hosted by the Fountain Baptist’s Boy’s Right of Passage Ministry led by Minister Rodney Williams with the assistance of Rev. Vernon Williams, Chief Weck spoke to the young men about the importance of communication and mutual respect while interacting with law enforcement to ensure positive and constructive encounters.

In addition to the discussion, Chief Weck and Officer Matt Tarentino from the Department’s Community Policing Unit also demonstrated simulated motor vehicle stops. These simulated traffic stops helped to highlight what citizens should expect while being stopped by law enforcement, and to demonstrate the high level of professional training standards expected from the Summit Police Department’s officers.

Chief Weck commented that he is “proud of our partnership with Fountain Baptist

Church and grateful to Minister Williams for the opportunity to build relationships with the young members of their congregation”.

“In this day and age of much-publicized conflict between law enforcement and the black community, we can’t underestimate the importance of mutual respect where both parties know what is required from each other,” said Minister Rodney Williams.

“While much counsel is given to us around how we should interact with the police, Chief Weck and Officer Tarentino provided a thorough look at the level of professionalism and decorum that we should expect in our interactions with officers and how to address anything less than that”.

In an effort to find a cure for senioritis, Chatham High School developed a senior internship

program that allows seniors the opportunity to intern at a business of their choice for the last five weeks of school.

“ I knew that it was a unique opportunity and it would have been silly not to participate” , said Emily Wingate.

I am attending Lafayette College in the fall and plan on entering the business world after graduation. I wanted to find an internship that would give me a taste of a career I may want to pursue in the future and had the pleasure of finding an exciting internship at the Suburban Chamber of Commerce.

I was so excited to start not only because I got to leave school, but also I would be able to use what I already know as well as learn a lot more at the office. After

speaking to a few of my friends and asking how their internships were going, I realized

that I am working in a much different (and far more exciting) environment. Unlike the boring desk jobs of filling papers, making phone calls, and sending emails some of my friends have, I get the experience of interacting with actual people. A few of the jobs I was given included conducting surveys on the streets of Summit and speaking to different employees at many local businesses. I have to admit, asking random strangers questions for the Chamber’s magazine, The Collection, was a little awkward at first, but became a lot easier as I kept going. (Ed Note: See “Summer Fun” on page 9). Talking comfortably to complete strangers is a difficult skill, but I am happy I got a taste of how to do it professionally before I enter the real working world.

Another thing I learned was how to take “no” for an answer, which is definitely not a strength of mine. I went from store to store delivering advertising information for the June issue of The Collection to see if they had any interest. I learned to handle the many questions and many “sorry not interested” while trying to bring out my inner sales person. Not only did my people skills improve, but also I became quite familiar with Excel and its tricks. For example, through a lot of trial and error I successfully learned how to mail merge. Not as easy as it looks! I also felt pretty professional when I was given my very own email address ([email protected]).

Aside from being occupied with the tasks I was given, I loved the entire work environment. Unexpectedly, not once did I feel uncomfortable in the office. Whenever I had a question about anything or how to do something, someone was always happy to give me an answer. I know what it feels like to wake up and dread going to work and I can honestly say that The Chambers energized and welcoming environment makes me so excited to come in. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my last few weeks of senior year.

The City of Summit has placed automatic external defibrillator (AED) equipment on all municipal sports

fields as part of its emergency action plan to protect the safety of athletes, spectators, coaches and officials in the event of a medical emergency.

An AED is a lightweight, portable, battery-operated, computerized device that is used to restore a regular heartbeat after sudden cardiac arrest caused by undiagnosed heart problems. AEDs are designed to allow non-medical personnel to save lives. During a cardiac emergency, two pads connected to the AED are placed on the patient’s chest. A computer inside the AED analyzes the patient’s heart rhythm and determines if an electric shock to the heart is required to save the victim. If so, the AED uses voice instructions to guide the user through the defibrillation process.

As long as an AED is turned on, it is designed to be next to foolproof. It will not prompt the operator to

go to the next step until the previous step has been completed and provides a logical, well-defined, and

well-documented sequence of directions. Further, the AED will not allow a shock to be administered unless the person is actually in cardiac arrest.

While it is not mandated by state law, the City of Summit chose to follow recent schools legislation and require AEDs at all athletic games and practices. The Department of Community Programs used Field Restoration funds to purchase 13 AEDs that are now strategically placed in locations at Investors Bank field, Glenside field, Upper Tatlock field, Memorial Field, Village Green, Summit High School, Summit Middle School and all five elementary schools. The placement of each AED, designed with a red flag and highly visible markings. This allows for no greater than a 90-second response time to a potential victim on each field. All recreation and youth sports coaches are receiving training on how to operate the equipment. In the state of New Jersey, Good Samaritan legislation protects all lay rescuers from lawsuits.

The Summit Department of Community Programs will be performing monthly visual inspections to help keep AEDs in proper working order.
