  • The Cold WarSocial Studies 10Ms. Rebecca

  • The Cold WarStruggle between the U.S. and the Soviet Union after WWIIhttp://pyleoflist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/sc_ussr_usa.jpg

  • Why was the war cold?Because neither the U.S. nor the Soviet Union ever declared war or fired weapons at one another.http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/thumb_168/1185456777EQ7bfy.jpg

  • Why didnt they just attack each other?Because they both had nuclear weapons that could do HUGE amounts of damage.

If a nuclear war started, it could mean to destruction of the entire WORLD!http://notexactlyrocketscience.files.wordpress.com/2006/08/nuclear_fireball.jpg

  • But didnt the U.S. and the Soviet Union fight on the SAME side during WWII?

YES! They both wanted to defeat Germany during WWII BUT once Germany was defeated, the U.S. and the Soviet Union had VERY different ideas about how countries should be run.http://wwtwo.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/big-three.jpg

  • Differences between the U.S. and the Soviet Union:1. Political Leadership2. Political Parties3. Economic differences

  • 1. Political LeadershipThe U.S. had a publicly elected president (democracy)The Soviet Union had a self-appointed dictator (Joseph Stalin)

  • 2. Political Parties1. The U.S. has many different political parties or groups of people who have different ideas about they way government should be run. Each party has the right to vote for the government to work a certain way.

    http://politicalpartypooper.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/elephant-donkey-boxing.jpg

  • 2. Political Parties2. The Soviet Union has ONE political party: Communism (everyone MUST agree with EVERY communist idea) More details on communism to followhttp://scrapetv.com/News/News%20Pages/Politics/images-2/communist-party-poster.jpg

  • 3. Economic differencesThe Soviet Union was socialist: the government owned and made all the decisions for all industries and businesses in the country. Individuals have no freedom or power in business.

  • 3. Economic differencesThe U.S. is capitalist: private companies are owned by individuals who make many of their own business decisions.

  • Which economy is better? There are pros and cons of both systems.

Problem: Both the U.S. and the Soviet Union though that EVERYTHING about the others system was wrong. Closed minded.

  • More Problems for the Soviet UnionThe Soviet Union lost more soldiers than any other country during WWII.http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l8xeX8k9lgo/SInkXvVi92I/AAAAAAAAEkI/h0vPldUB67E/s400/Russia+WWII-Lamenting_the_dead.jpg

  • More Problems for the Soviet UnionThe Soviet Union didnt want to be invaded by Germany again. So they took control of ALL of the countries between the Soviet Union and Germany.

  • It Worked!By 1946 the Soviet Union controlled most of Eastern Europe.http://wapedia.mobi/thumb/e94e14613/en/fixed/470/295/CEMA_members.png?format=jpg

  • Iron CurtainGreat Britains Prime Minister: Winston Churchill compared the divide between the western Europe (democratic) and Eastern Europe (communist) was like an iron curtain.http://opal.kent.ac.uk/cartoonx-cgi/image/standard/ILW1059

  • The U.S. responds to the Soviet Union taking more landAfter the Soviet Union gained control over more land in Eastern Europe, the U.S. worried that the Soviet Union was becoming too powerful.http://conservativecancer.com/Muscles.jpg

  • So why do Americans hate communism so much?It was the opposite of American idea of freedom and the opportunity to get rich.

  • And why did people from the Soviet Union hate capitalism/democracy so much?Because in the Soviet Union there were many poor people and a few rich people. All of the poor people hated that there were a few rich people who had all the money. They thought it was unfair and that everyone should be equal. Thats the idea behind communismhttp://anticap.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/the_abyss_of_inequality_307515.jpg

  • ContainmentThe U.S. policy of trying to stop the spread of communism to other countries by the Soviet Union.

The policy said that the Soviet Union could keep the land it had already taken but had to stop taking MORE land.Sound familiar?

  • What other countriesHave been warned to stop taking more land?http://indianinthemachine.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/g23104b-9183535_std.jpg

  • The Berlin BlockadeAs you may remember, Berlin (the capital of Germany) was divided into 4 zones after WWII.

3 zones in the were controlled by western (democratic) countries. This area was called: West Berlin1 zone in the east was controlled by the Soviet Union (communism). This area was called East Berlin

  • Zones of Berlin

  • The Berlin BlockadeJoseph Stalin didnt want the western nations (the U.S.) to have ANY influence over East Berlin, so he tried to block all land transportation (cars, trains, walking etc) from West Berlin into East Berlin. This was called the Berlin Blockade.

  • Problem with the BlockadeMuch of the food and supplies to help the German people in all parts of Berlin came from the western nations (U.S.A.)

Remember, Germany needed help after they lost WII!http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_5LWf5RCLu-Y/SUwGkoKx7XI/AAAAAAAAAJM/bgFCTM1_JMU/s400/NoHelp.bmp

  • Problem with the BlockadeIf there was a blockade that meant that supplies could not get into East Berlin from western areas.

  • Choices for the U.S.The U.S. wanted to help the people in East Berlin so they decided to fly planes over East Berlin and drop supplies from the sky. This is called the Berlin Airlift.http://macdacwestretirees.org/macdacwestretirees/images/BerlinAirlift4.jpg

  • Berlin AirliftFor 321 days, planes flew over East Berlin and dropped off supplies. In May 1949, the Soviet Union lifted the blockade on East Berlin.

  • The Berlin WallThe city of Berlin remained divided.

Many people in East Berlin wanted to leave and go to West Berlin because they could buy more things and have more freedoms in West Berlin (democratic and capitalist)

  • The Berlin WallThe East Berlin government didnt want people to leave because it would make them look bad. So, they built a wall between East Berlin and West Berlin to keep people from leaving the East.http://dreamofarlequin.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/berlin-wall.jpg

  • The Berlin WallBy 1961, up to 20,000 Eastern Berliners moved into West Berlin each month!http://www.aviewoncities.com/berlin/mauer.htm

  • The Berlin WallIf anyone was caught trying to cross over the wall into West Berlin they were shot. 192 people were killed in an attempt to cross the border to the West. http://www.aviewoncities.com/berlin/mauer.htm

  • The Berlin WallIn 1989, the Cold War was ending and the border was re-opened between East and West Berlin. Berlin was united once again as a democratic government.http://www.pagefarm.net/wiki/images/d/dc/Openwall.jpg

  • The Cold War Spreads CommunismCommunism looked good to places like China and Vietnam. Why? Because there were many poor people living there.

  • 2 Alliances were formed1. Formed in 1949: North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO): Western nations that agreed to go to war against any country that attacked a country in NATOhttp://blog.kievukraine.info/uploaded_images/3775-712826.jpg

  • 2 Alliances were formedIn 1955 the Warsaw Pact was an alliance formed with the Soviet Union and other Eastern European countries.http://www.axisglobe.com/Image/2005/11/15/warsawpactanim(1).gif

  • Both sidesBoth alliances tried to scare the other side by threatening nuclear war.

    http://mikeely.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/nuclear_warheads.jpg

  • Choosing SidesEuropeans were divided. People started to choose sides in the conflict between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

Western Europe sided with the United StatesEastern Europe sided with the Soviet Union

  • Not everyone agreesBUT, not everyone living in communist countries liked their government.

  • PolandIn 1956 over 50,000 Polish workers went on strike. They wanted freedom from communist rule. The Soviet government forced them to stop striking.http://libcom.org/files/imagecache/article/images/library/poznan1.jpg

  • HungaryDuring the same year, people in Hungary started a rebellion against communism. Thousands of protestors were killed. The leader of the rebellion was later killed, as well.http://www.xtcian.com/hungar1.jpg

  • Other parts of the Cold WarIn addition to competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in terms of who had better weapons, the two countries also competed in other ways

  • Communism in CubaIn 1959, a communist named Fidel Castro took control over the country of Cuba. http://www.freewebs.com/rock4supremeoverlord/castro1.gif

  • Cuba loves the Soviet UnionBecause the Soviet Union and Cuba were now Communist, Fidel Castro allowed Nikita Khrushchev (leader of the Soviet Union after Stalin died) to put atomic missiles on Cuba.http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5116KSEPVSL.jpg

  • Why would the Soviet Union put missiles on Cuba?Because Cuba is within firing range of the U.S.! (only 90 miles away from the U.S.!)http://www.jfklibrary.org/jfkl/cmc/cmc_map_missile_range.jpg

  • Also. The U.S. had already placed atomic missiles in Turkey, which was within firing range of the Soviet Union!TURKEY

  • The President decidesThe U.S. President: John F. Kennedy (JFK) demanded that the Soviet Union remove the missiles from Cuba or else the U.S. would attack the island and destroy the missiles and declare war on the Soviet Union.http://www.historyplace.com/speeches/speechgfx/jfk-cuban.jpg

  • The Cuban Missile CrisisThis was called the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was the closest the Soviet Union and the U.S. came to declaring war on each other.http://telefolios.rcoe.appstate.edu/~at62288/ilw3584.gif

  • What happened?President Kennedy agreed to remove missiles from Turkey if the Soviet Union agreed to remove their missiles from Cuba.

It WORKED! Nuclear War was avoided.

  • BUTIt was VERY close to ending in war. There is a movie about the 13 days that President Kennedy had to decide whether to declare war on the Soviet Union. Its called: Thirteen Days

    Lets watch!http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_3/images/movie-thirteen-days.jpg

  • Communism in AsiaSome of the worst Cold War struggles were in Asia. This is where the Cold War turned hot.http://scrapetv.com/News/News%20Pages/usa/images-3/vietnam-war.jpg

  • Communism in ChinaThere was a civil war in China in 1945 between communists and nationalists (non-communists).

    http://www.warchat.org/pictures/russia_civil_war.jpg

  • Communism in ChinaMao Zedong was the leader of the communists.Chiang Kai Shek led the nationalists.http://speakingoffaith.publicradio.org/programs/chinese_religiosities/images/mao_kai-shek.jpg

  • Communism in ChinaThe communists won the civil war in 1949 and Chiang Kai Shek and other Nationalists ran away to Taiwan to escape death.http://www.merriam-webster.com/maps/images/maps/taiwan_map.gif

  • Maos ideasMao Zedong became the leader of China and said he wanted all Chinese people to be equal. Many people loved him, especially poor people or farmers because he promised to help them and get rid of rich, greedy people who thought they were better than everyone else.

  • Maos IdeasMao brought many changes to China.http://scrapetv.com/News/News%20Pages/Entertainment/images-2/mao-zedong.jpg

  • The Great Leap ForwardA program started by Mao which forced peasants (poor people living in the country) to work on huge collective farms.http://www.iisg.nl/landsberger/images/mzd06.jpg

  • Collective Farmhttp://people.cohums.ohio-state.edu/bender4/eall131/EAHReadings/module02/imageforcontent/greatleap.jpg

  • The Great Leap ForwardThe idea behind collective farms was that they would increase food production in China and help people to not starve.http://www.iisg.nl/landsberger/images/glf09.jpg

  • ProblemPeople were working under STRICT government controls where they were expected to produce huge amounts of food and not all of it was given to people who were hungry! http://prophecystudy.com/prophecy/end_times/images/starving_man.jpg

  • ResultsMany people starved to death!http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/images/stories/large/2009/10/02/greatfamine_child.jpg

  • Shhhhhhhhhhhh!BUT none of the starvation was reported on the news. Chinese people were only allowed to hear/say good things abut Mao and his programs. (Dictatorship!)http://www.japanfocus.org/data/leap.jpg

  • Fighting BackSome people DID talk about Mao and his bad programs. Mao didnt like this..

  • Cultural RevolutionIn 1966, Mao began the Cultural Revolution where millions of young students (some were only children!) joined a group called the Red Guard. They were taught in school to attack anyone who was not a PERFECT communist. http://voyage.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/04/13/tibet_cultural_revolution_3.jpg

  • Who is not a perfect communist?People who are too educated.People who wear clothes that make them stand outPeople who create artWritersDoctors

  • Individuality?According to Mao, all individuality is bad!You should only work to help the collective group. Dont think about yourself, think of everyone else!Anytime you do something to make yourself stand out (write a book, make a painting, wear different clothes etc) you are being selfish and anti-communist.

  • Red GuardsTraveled around China destroying books and art and anything that was from old China because old China was full of selfish, greedy people that werent communist.http://www.thearchetypalconnection.com/images/RedGuardsLow.JPG

  • Things get out of controlFinally, Mao realized that the destruction of the Red Guards was getting out of control. In 1968, he ordered the army to break up the Red Guards. The Cultural Revolution was over.

  • New LeaderIn 1976, Mao died and Deng Xiaoping became the leader of China.

Deng Xiaoping made many changes to China to help the country improve industry. STILL communist!http://www.newsgd.com/specials/deng100thbirthanniversary/gdandopeninguppolicy/200407260064_17726.jpg

  • Not all Chinese people liked communismSome people were still unhappy with communism. Students were especially opposed to communism because they thought that people should be able to learn new things and challenge ideas that seemed unfair without being seen as bad.

  • Student ProtestsIn 1989, students in China began to protest against communism.

The communist government didnt like this, so they sent the army to stop student protests.http://cnreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/gaokao.jpg

  • Tiananmen Square MassacreIn Tiananmen Square in Beijing there was a large student (non-violent) protest.

To stop the protests, the government sent in huge army tanks and soldiers with guns. Hundreds of protestors were killed.

  • Tiananmen SquareTiananmen means Gate of Heavenly Peace ironic?http://www.poormojo.org/pmjadaily/archives/tiananmen_cp_5902391.jpg

  • ResultsPictures and video of the massacre were all over the news across the world. The world saw some of the terrible things that can happen when people have their freedom taken away.http://voyage.typepad.com/lfc_images/Tiananmen_Tank_Man_Simpsons_2.jpg

  • China TodayToday China is still communist but the government is a bit less strict about how people live their personal lives and how they make money.

Example: You can own your own business; Chinese people value good education; not everyone has to dress the same. HOWEVER, you still cannot say anything bad about communism or the Chinese government and all of the news and media is controlled by the communist government.

  • Wars! There were wars in Korea and Vietnam between people who wanted to spread communism and people who wanted to stop the spread of communism.

  • Korean WarAfter WWII, Korea was divided. The Soviet Union helped people in North Korea to set up a communist government. The U.S. helped people in South Korea to set up a non-communist government (democratic).

  • Korean WarIn 1950, North Korea attacked South Korea to try to force South Korea to join the communist regime of North Korea.http://eastasiaforum.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/pyongyang-north-korea-nc.jpg

  • Korean WarThe U.N. responded. The U.S. led a force to fight the North Koreans and were able to push them out of South Korea.http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4e/KoreanWar_recover_Seoul.jpg

  • Help From the ChineseBUT China was communist and wanted the North Koreans to win the war. So Mao Zedong (Chinas leader) send a Chinese army to help the North Koreans.http://www.crossed-flag-pins.com/Friendship-Pins/China/Flag-Pins-China-North-Korea.jpg

  • Help From the ChineseThe Chinese were able to help North Korea to push the U.S. and South Korea back. http://www.chinapost.com.tw/news_images/20091209/p13a.jpg

  • Back and Forth Stalemate! Technically the Korean war is NOT over! BUT after fighting for 3 years, North Korea, the U.S., and China signed an armistice or an agreement to stop fighting on July 27, 1953.

  • Results of the Korean WarNorth Korea and South Korea are still divided into 2 different countries and are VERY different from one another.

There are still armies ready and waiting for attack and they are located on the border of a demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea. This means no weapons or military can be IN the zone, but there are plenty of soldiers just outside of the zone.

  • The DMZ todayhttp://www.knowledgenews.net/picturethis/dmz.jpg

  • The Vietnam Warhttp://scrapetv.com/News/News%20Pages/usa/images-3/vietnam-war-soldiers.jpg

  • The French in VietnamHistory: France controlled Vietnam in the 1800s. Vietnam was a French colony.

  • After the war.France wanted Vietnam back.

  • How do the Vietnamese feel? How do you think the Vietnamese people felt about always being controlled by other people?http://blog.beliefnet.com/stevenwaldman/imgs/Vietnamese%20man%20being%20executed.jpg

  • Ho Chi Minh and communism in Vietnam 1945- Communist leader Ho Chi Minh said that Vietnam wanted to be independent.

  • French ResponseFrance is a democracy and they dont want Vietnam to be communist or independent!

  • War breaks out!Between France and Vietnamhttp://mailer.fsu.edu/~akirk/tanks/france/Fra-M24-markholloway-FrenchLegionaires-VietNam.jpg

  • Vietnam wins!In 1954A treaty is made that divided Vietnam into 2 parts.1 part was communist (North)1 part was non-communist (South)http://www.warchat.org/pictures/vietnam_war_map.gif

  • Why do you think the North was communist?

  • Communists are unhappyThey wanted a united Vietnam that was ALL communist. All our rivers flow into the Eastern Sea. The North and South united under one roofhttp://images.google.co.th/imgres?imgurl=http://www.vspa.com/images-posters/Vietnam/nva-PoliticalCommunist%2520Viet%2520Nam.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.vspa.com/vspa-communist-vn-war-posters-p5.htm&usg=__fGmB-kbuma9IN7uzkM5Dq2xLCAU=&h=306&w=400&sz=53&hl=en&start=15&sig2=RvHRq2KeNKOiEEmGwsYQqA&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=4G9KbfgK_pmtkM:&tbnh=95&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3DCommunist%2BVietnam%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26um%3D1&ei=0OtwS4iaEoue6gOJ25mHCQ

  • Civil War Breaks out in VietnamPicture of a Vietnamese man killing another Vietnamese man who was part of the Viet Cong. (People who were communist but were from SOUTH Vietnam)

  • war!The North Vietnamese attacked the South to try to take over the South and unite the whole country under communism.

  • Other countries care China wanted North Vietnam to win because they wanted to spread communism.

U.S.A. wanted South Vietnam to win because they wanted to STOP the spread of communism.

Neither the U.S nor China sent troops to Vietnam but they let people know who they wanted to win

  • The U.S. sends troopsThe communists were winning the war early on. To help the South, the U.S. sent troops in 1965.

  • Damage of the WarOne of the most deadly attacks during the war was the Tet Offensive. The North attacked South Vietnam in 1968.http://billdoskoch.blogware.com/images/tet_offensive_2.jpg

  • Damage of the WarBy 1968, over 500,000 U.S. soldiers were in Vietnam. More that 58,000 soldiers died during the war.http://www.offensivestuff.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/dead-soldiers.jpg

  • T.V.The Vietnam War was different than all other Wars before because many battles and pictures from the war were shown on television for Americans to see at home.http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com/celebrity/images/TVguide/73vietnamwar.JPG

  • T.V.People saw all of the terrible things that were happening in Vietnam and they wanted an end to the war.http://redhatrob.files.wordpress.com/2007/09/vietnam_protest_rs.jpg

  • The U.S. leavesBecause many Americans did not support the war and because the American army underestimated the Vietnamese army, the U.S. began to take soldiers out of Vietnam.http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/38722000/jpg/_38722099_vietnam_ap_238.jpg

  • The U.S. leavesThe U.S. government started negotiations with the communist government in the north.

  • ceasefireIn 1973 the U.S. signed a ceasefire agreement (an agreement to stop fighting) with Vietnam and they left the country. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tx3_HrYHX9E/SVlOXeioYFI/AAAAAAAADOY/1kZkgMggDyc/s400/693_354_ceasefire_4.jpg

  • Spread of communismAfter the U.S. left Vietnam, communism began to spread and in 1975, the North Vietnamese defeated the South. Communists controlled all of Vietnam.

  • The End of the Cold WarThe biggest superpower for the communist side was The Soviet Union.

When the Soviet Union began to collapse in the 1980s, the Cold War came to an end.

  • What happened to the Soviet Union?1. They were spending too much money on:

    a. War

    b. Farming

  • What happened to the Soviet Union? They tried to change the economy but it just made people want to have freedom from Soviet rule.

  • AfghanistanStarting in 1979, the Soviet Union fought a war in Afghanistan because they wanted Afghanistan to be communist. This war was very expensive.http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39091000/jpg/_39091114_ussrafghan_ap203.jpg

  • FarmingMeanwhile, the Soviet Union spent huge amounts of money on new farming equipment and technology BUT they didnt produce enough crops for their people.http://udf.by/uploads/posts/2009-07/1246975637_kombajn.jpg

  • FarmingTo feed the people in the Soviet Union, the government had to spend even more money to import crops (buy crops from other countries) from places like the U.S.http://www.enviroone.com/images/crops/corn.jpg

  • The U.S. didnt like the war in AfghanistanSo, they wouldnt sell the Soviet Union as many crops as they needed. People were hungry and upset.http://econc10.bu.edu/economic_systems/Economics/Economic_History/FSU/echist1.gif

  • Changing EconomyThe new leader of Soviet Communist Party in 1985 was Mikhail Gorbachev. He wanted to help the people of the Soviet Union by changing the economy and giving people more freedom.http://scrapetv.com/News/News%20Pages/Technology/images/Mikhail-Gorbachev.jpg

  • Changing EconomyGorbachevs economic changes helped production a little bit but what it really did was encourage the idea of freedom in many people and it made them want to have their own independent countries, free from Soviet rule.

  • The Soviet Union was weakBy the time Gorbachev was in power, the Soviet Union had lost a lot of money because of the war in Afghanistan and because of big spending for farming and imports. As a result it was weak.

  • IndependenceIn 1991, the following countries pushed for independence from the Soviet Union and the Soviet Union was too weak to stop them:Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakistan

  • The Soviet Union no longer existedThe Cold War was over officially in 1992 when U.S. President George Bush met with Russian President Boris Yeltsin and they both declared peace and said that the Cold War was over. http://www.nuclearfiles.org/menu/key-issues/nuclear-weapons/history/prez_policies/bush1/bush_and_yeltsin.jpg
